Apps replaced with question marks?

I just bought an iPhone 5s from ebay. It arrived with a US plug and US instructions even though i live in the UK and the sender was from the UK. I plugged it into my mac computer and it loaded up on iTunes then instantly chrome had to force quit and I had to report the problem. I then restarted the mac and when I logged in, all the apps were unaccessable and had large question marks where the app icon would have been before. I can still access my files and safari however iTunes, app store, chrome etc have all disappeared. I have read that they could have been deleted or moved and to relocate them back to the dock via applications folder however the apps are not in the applications folder or anywhere on the computer after doing a search. Please help!

I would return the phone for credit or contact eBay and claim the product was not as advertised.
As an aside, I would never buy a used electronic device (iPhone or anything else) on eBay (or anywhere else) unless I knew the seller personally.

  • Stacks replaced with question marks. Why?

I made several stacks with Apple and 3rd party applications. After the mac was awakened from sleep mode, the stacks were replaced with question marks. Anyone know why? and how this can be avoided?
    Thanks

I finally figured out what I was doing wrong. I listened to the Apple Rep. He told me to make a folder on the desktop, put in the aliased apps and put it as a stacked folder on the Dock. Wrong!!! This folder has to be made as a subfolder of the Documents folder. Then this folder holding the aliased filed is dragged to the Dock. The reason is simple. Whatever folder is made on the Desktop and put on the Dock as a stacked folder leaves a copy on the Desktop. When this is Trashed and the Trash bin is emptied, so is the stacked folder. By dragging it from the Documents folder, nothing is left on the Desktop.

  • Links replaced with question marks

I have two songs I placed on my site. I noticed tonight that the links are not there and instead there are two question marks.
So, I uploaded the site again and still there are question marks. Then I looked at the index folder on my desktop and the links are right and good there.
Everything else on the site seems fine.
I use Transmit and have never had any problem until now. I can only assume that something weird and wrong is happening in the ftp process. Right? I went back after uploading the whole site and replaced just the two folders for that page, with no change in the result.
I also emptied the cache in case I was looking at an old version of the page.
If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate them. This is not urgent, the songs are mainly there for fun and diversion. Still, I'd like them to get back up.
The url for that page is: http://www.pantherpeakbindery.com/Club19.html

Here's where I am with this:
In Safari (both my iBook and my wife's Powerbook) I get question marks where the songs should be.
On two PCs at work, using IE, I get a Quicktime logo which cannot be activated.
Using Firefox on a Mac I get the songs right away. Using Firefox on my office PC I get a Quicktime application warning, though the songs will play.
Was there some upgrade to Quicktime which might be behind all of this?
    I'd appreciate any ideas. Thanks!

  • I upgraded to Keynote 6.2.2 and deleted the old Keynote application. Now all the content is gone and replaced with question marks

Lost all content and now my lectures are reduced to slides with some text and question marks were images/content used to be. Incredibly frustrating. How can I get my content back?

Re-install iWorks 09 and you will be up and running again.

  • Craigsphone app pictures are blue boxes with question marks?

When I use the Craigsphone app for my iPhone, the images are now blue boxes with question marks.  The pictures used to show up fine, but now don't.  Is there a setting somewhere I need to change and if so, where is it?  I've been through my phone and can't figure it out.  I've also restarted and restored my phone and that hasn't worked.
    Thanks in advance!

I am also running into this problem. net every picture doesn't show though, just maybe three quarters worth.

  • Reconnecting images (that have become placeholders with question marks)?

Images in document have been replaced by placeholders with question mark. When I check project file 'Show Package Contents' i see that the missing photos are still there.
Is there a way to re-link or re-connect the photos to their places in the document? Can't find anything in the manual. This is something that happens in many other apps. that I use, like Final Cut, but there is always an easy method of 'reconnection'.

I have exactly the same settings on the desktop iMac as on the Macbook pro, but the problem only occurs on the macbook.

  • Every once in a while when I open my mail or a page I get nothing but strange lines of symbols.  Many of the symbols are black triangles with question marks in the center.  I completely reset it like new, but problem still exists

Every once in a while when I open my mail or open a page I get lines of strange symbols like black triangles with question marks in the center.  I have reset the ipad2 to new condition but the problem still exists.

A reset does not make tthe iPad "like new."
First, let's ensure that we agree on just what is a Reset...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • MacBook Pro flashes file folder with question mark and startup manager will not run

My son's MacBook Pro won't boot (gets the flashing file folder with question mark).  When I try to open startup manager (holding "option" key during boot does not do it).  Other posts suggest inserting the install disk, but I am pretty sure that for Lion, there was no disk, it was just off the website through the App Store.  Any further suggestions?

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

On your friend's computer with an internet connection, log into the Mac App Store with your ID and download Yosemite from the Purchases section of the Mac App Store. The make a bootable USB install media using
    http://liondiskmaker.com/
Then boot from that on your computer and install
You need an internet connection to install via Recovery mode

  • Special Character being replaced by Question Marks in Java Mapping

    Hi All,
I need some help on Java Mapping related to special characters.
The problem is that i'm using a Java Mapping to add some information to the XML inside the Interface Mapping. This works fine on our development environment but, in our production environment, it replaces the special character with question marks (eg.: á --> ??).
I'm suspecting of some configuration on the Java Virtual Machine that sets the encoding, but i don't have access to it. Does anyone have any clues about this problem?
    Thanks a lot,

  • Apostrophes are replaced by question marks in output string?

    Hi Guys
I think this is an encoding problem but I cannot find it in the forum archives. My apostrophes are being replaced by question marks on my jsp output?
Any idea why and how to get them back to apostrophes
    Cheers, ADC

Guys, the 3rd party product has no trouble at all
showing the apostrophes from the self-same database
that I get question marks from.
This MUST be an encoding issue, so anyone that knows
about encoding and changing it please could you
suggest something. You can take for granted that one
way or another the character in the database IS an
apostrophe as verified by viewing it via the 3rd party
    product we have.You said...
In the SQL database view they come out as squares
Were you referring to the normal applications that are available for viewing data for the database (like SQL*Plus or Enterprise Manager?)
If yes, then if it was me then I would presume it was not an apostrophe and that the third party tool was mapping the real character to an apostrophe. A 'square' indicates an unusual character in viewers.
Are you using EBCDIC? Unless EBCDIC is involved apostrophe has the same value in most if not all character sets because ANSI forms the lower range for most character sets. I know for example that Korean, Japanese and Chinese character sets use ANSI, as does unicode (with padded zeros for the wider ranges.)

  • MacBook won't start - shows flashing folder icon with question mark

When I attempted a Spotlight search, my MacBook froze. I shut it down, and when I start again I get the sound, the blue screen, and then a flashing folder icon with a question mark. I tried starting with Option pressed down; didn't work, and now I don't even get the flashing folder icon, just the blue screen. Any suggestions?

The flashing folder with question mark means the computer can't find a working OS on the computer. This may mean your hard drive has failed.
Try holding the Shift key while starting up the machine. This puts the machine into Safe Mode.
If you have your install discs, insert Install Disc 1 and start up the computer while holding down the C key. When the Installer has loaded, choose a language. From the Utilities menu, choose *Disk Utility*. Does your hard drive show up here? If so, click on its icon (the one with manufacturer name & capacity, NOT "Macintosh HD"), and then click on the *Repair Disk* button.
If booting in Safe mode doesn't help or you don't have your install discs, you need to bring the computer to an Apple store and have the folks there look. If Disk Utility doesn't list your hard drive, it has very likely failed and will need to be replaced. If your machine is out of warranty, you're better off replacing it yourself, as it's very easy to do.
