Apps running in background

I have tried several battery monitoring apps, and they show what apps are running in the background. Is there a way to force the unwanted apps to shutdown, or is there an app that can do this?

Double-tapping the Home butons brings up the Recently Used Apps or the Recents List
See the iOS4 Manual:
And from iOS 4: About multitasking
From Apple's webpage on multitasking:
The Apps shown in the *Recently Used Apps* list, are NOT all running in the background.
Only Apps that have been specifically updated for iOS 4 compatibility to use one of the new multitasking services (Voice over IP, background audio, background location) can be running in the background. Any others are simply frozen in memory using iOS 4's Fast App Switching.
Apps that have not been updated for iOS 4 cannot run in the background AT ALL. They are simply listed in the *Recently Used Apps* list, because you have used them recently. They do not need to be removed or shut down.

My iPad is low on memory and it says to turn off apps running in background . How do I do that

    Hello Skittles1202
It sounds like more of the storage of your iPad is full. Plug it into your computer and check in iTunes or on your iPad go to Settings > General > Usage and it will sort out in order of what is taking up the most space. Once you figure that out you can either delete what is not needed or import any photos that you may have to your computer. If you want to close out any application that you may have open previously, then double tap the home button and then swipe up on any app that you want to close

  • Some events are not dispatched when app runs in background

My Android app has a TIMER event which fires once every second to connect a TCP socket (class flash.net.Socket) and send a request.
A packet sniffer confirms that a socket is in fact connecting, request is sent, reply comes back and connection is closed, all happening once per second.
Clearly, even with the app in the background, the TIMER event is occurring every second, because the timer handler is initating every socket.
But not every closing connection causes a CLOSE event to dispatch, because my close handler is called less frequently.  Sometimes once in 3 seconds, 8 seconds or even longer.
The CLOSE dispatches correctly once per second when the app is in the foreground.
Why are CLOSE events being missed when the app is in the background?  What is the difference between a TIMER event and a CLOSE event, causing one to dispatch correctly but not the other?
    Thanks.

I've narrowed my problem down by chopping pieces of code until it works, and I think I have it narrowed down to the code that uses FlexGraphing but need to check a bit more...
It's odd that it works in Flex3 builder though, and there are no errors when I run in as AIR. In fact, the app RUNS, since it is in the task manager, but it won't appear.

Double-tapping the Home button will bring up the running apps icons along with an app screenshot "card" above the icon. Tap-drag the app's -card- (NOT the icon) up and off the screen.

  • TrackPad not working unless "Diagnostic Tests" app running in background

My Torch 9810 TrackPad stopped working... I had downloaded the BlackBerry 7 OS free apps including those that provide "notifications" and "text to speech" and "speech recognition" capabilities that I don't mind having to fool around with, but I don't want to use all the time... they tend to take over buttons and configuration too much, so in my efforts to remove them or at LEAST get them to stop activating every time my BB moves in my pocket I was uninstalling things. I was told I had to reboot the device, and after doing so, the trackpad would not work.
So I go back and restore my backup... and the trackpad works... briefly: all the restored apps start asking for permissions etc. and run their configuration wizards whatever and then the trackpad stopped working again.
I've tried restoring AGAIN and have even downgraded the OS to get back to a "more stable" configuration with NO third-party software installed and no luck.
At this point, the trackpad does NOT work at all in any apps. I'm sure this is a software-related problem and not that the trackpad itself is broken and needs replacement.
I've used BBSAK to try to lobotomize it back to total "factory default" but that didn't work either.
I want to rule out a hardware failure (I'm SURE this is just software related, because it happened after a reboot and there had been no problems prior to this) So today I visit the BlackBerry.com website and search for "trackpad"
I get "trackpad not working" as the first result.
    "TrackPad Not Working" KB article
At the very bottom of the page is a link to the "Device Self Test Application" instructions at:
    "Diagnostic Self Tests" KB Article
So as soon as I start in with the Diagnostic Self Test app, it asks "Do you want a guided setup" and shows "Yes" and "No" buttons. Instinctively I try to use the TrackPad to navigate to "No" because I just want the trackpad diagnostic, and... the trackpad works.
I exit the "Diagnostic" app and go back to my home screen and it works again... briefly...
I re-enter the diagnostic app, the trackpad works, then I long-press the Menu key to go to different apps, and the trackpad continues to work.
So, it seems like keeping the 'Diagnostic Self Test' app running in the background is 'propping up' the TrackPad so it works, but when I exit the Diagnostic app, it stops working.
Also, the back of the device seems warmer than usual, as if the CPU is being driven hard.
I'm wondering if some rogue app might be crippling the TrackPad? And the Diagnostic Self Test app is somehow pushing the rogue app aside but the rogue app is "waiting as hard as it can" and driving the CPU hard?
Yeah, I'm grasping / speculating / making stuff up, but maybe someone can decipher what I'm saying and give me some clues?
If there's a "end user totally restore the firmware to a factory configuration" that will likely resolve this issue, I'm capable enough to try it rather than be without the trackpad (or the device being repaired under warranty) for days.

Note: I decided to try exiting the Diagnostic Self Test app to see if the TrackPad would stop working... or if using a specific app made it stop working... and after doing so, then rebooting etc. the TrackPad has now been working for many hours: dare I try to reinstall some of the apps I removed?

  • How to stop apps running in background

I tried reinstalling MS Office 2011 but cant stop an app running in the background. It needs to stop prior to the install and I cant stop it.

    Install Basics for Office 2011
Not only should Safari be quit but all browsers and hidden Microsoft processes like the Microsoft Database daemon and SyncServicesAgent. To disable these applications:
    Log Out/In
Log out under the Apple in the Menu bar
Log in and hold down the Shift key (this disables all startup items including the hidden ones)
    Restart after installing updater
Note for the MAU and MERP updaters you do NOT have to restart after updating. These are found in the root Library:
    /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/
    Why Restart?
The Restart after updater will force a file that stores the version info to update. This should happen automatically but sometimes it doesn't. The next updater will fail and you will have to re-install Office. The restart is a quick step that will save time in the long term.

  • Let an app run in background or close asap?

I'm worried about going over my multimedia plan...Is it better to let an app run in the background or to close them as soon as you're done?

The vast majority of apps cannot and do not run in the background.  For more info on Multitasking...

Bottom line, you don't need to 'close' those apps unless you notice a significant hit to performance or battery life that might be caused by a rogue app.

  • IOS 8 apps run in background when set not to.

Since upgrading to iOS 8, apps have been launching themselves in the background despite being set not to in the "Background Apps Refresh" settings page.
I've noticed that that page no longer mentions anything about apps using Location Service.  That setting has apparently been moved to the Location Services page with each app now having an option to either "Always" allow location services or "Never" allow location services.  The former says it allows apps to use location services in the background, but why would they do so if the "Background Refresh" for the apps is set to off?
This can't be the way it's supposed to work since the "Background App Refresh" settings now do absolutely nothing.  Other than settings the Location Services setting to "Never" which would break apps when I run them, how can I keep apps from running in the background under iOS 8?

I have an app installed that shows running processes on my phone and I can see them running even though I force killed them.
I fixed this for a few different apps by either uninstalling and reinstalling them (Yahoo Weather) or turning off GPS functionality inside the apps setting (Google).  Still I don't like this change as apps can apparently request Location Data any time they want, even when they have never been manually launched.
