Apps using an email for apple id that was never used.

I have apps on my phone that were downloaded using my current apple id. Often, too often, when these apps have updates, the want a password for an apple id based on an email address that I have never used for an apple id. This old email address is years old and predates my owning any apple product. Because of this I have no idea what password it might want. Secondly, why are these apps, some purchased on a valid apple id, change what account they are associated with?

If you scroll to the bottom of the Featured tab in the App Store on your phone you should see your currently logged in id - tapping on that should give you a popup so that you can sign out.
On your computer's iTunes, if you select the Apps part of your library where all your apps (not the phone's Apps tab that you use to select which apps to sync, update, remove from the phone)
(The icons that show will depend upon what you've selected via the '...' icon)
And select/highlight one of the apps that was asking for the old id on your phone, go 'get-info' (command-I on a Mac ; control-I on a PC) and select the File tab on the popup, that should show the account id that the app is tied to. Does that show the old account or current account ?

It sounds like a phishing email. You can't "cancel" purchases. You've now given them your AppleID and password, so you should immediately change your password to something new and very secure.
Also watch out for suspicicious activity on your account.

IPad startup asks for apple id that is an email

iPad startup asks for apple id that is an email but my existing apple id is not an email address. When I try to change my existing apple id to my email, the system won't change it so I'm stuck. I can't complete the iPad startup without entering my apple id but I can't change it to an email address like the iPad expects. Any suggestions?

To be honest i'm not sure but i think the apple id is always an email address and you can't use anything else try putting @me.com after the apple id you have

Apple will not ask you to click a link in an email. They may tell you to log in to your account to reset your password. Go to https://appleid.apple.com and log in if you ever want to change any information in your profile (or your password). And do not click the link I just posted; instead enter it into a browser.
You can verify the devices assigned to your account by going to https://icloud.com/find (again, don't click it), where you can see a list of devices registered to your Apple ID.
As a general rule, you should never click a link in an email or forum post without verifying it first. You can see where it goes without clicking it in most email programs and browsers by hovering your mouse pointer over it. On an iPhone you can check where it goes by holding your finger on the link (rather than just tapping it).

Does that id show on the right-hand side of Settings > Store or does yours show ? If the wrong one shows then logout of it by tapping on it and then log in with your .
Do you recognise the id that is being shown - is it one that you've previously used (in which case any apps that you bought/downloaded with it can only be re-downloaded or updated via it) or is it a friend's id ( have you ever connected to somebody else's computer/iTunes)

My Apple ID is set up with my gmail account, and I am not getting ANY verification emails (neither iCloud, nor Apple ID -I tried resetting-). I don't know what this mess is about, but that verification email is the same reason I can't set up FaceTime on my iPad 2... All other forms of Apple ID work just fine -I buy apps all the time from the store and everything runs smoothly-
If anyone ever finds out a way of fixing this... PLEASE HELP!

Use that iD to sign and use the iPod.
You can go to Settings>iTunes and App stores and change the ID for purchases. The ID is also used in Settings>FaceTime, Setting>iCloud, Settings>Messages>Send abd receive and Settings>Game Center and can ne changed in those locations.

Are you the original owner of this phone? If so sign in with the Apple ID and password you used when you first set it up.
Or did you buy is phone used? Contact the person you bought it from and have him/her correct the problem or refund your money.
You have encountered activation Lock that prevents stolen or lost phones from being activated. As stated the only way around this problem is to have the original owner clear the phone for your use.

I am soooooooooooo confused now. Ok, if you are having problems with Yahoo Mail and Gmail but you do not use Apple's Mail you need to do the following:
1 - Post in Yahoo's Mail forums and/or contact their tech support.
2 - Post in Gmails forums and/or contact their tech support.
Neither of the above are Apple's products.
