Apps won't open in Snow Leopard on my imac

Hi - a few days ago we had a massive power cut which happened during a storm, and while I was using my mac. Since then Finder has kept crashing and now I cannot open any applications either from the dock or the apps folder, except Firefox for some reason! Any ideas? I've tried reboots, booting in safe mode, and deleting unwanted login items, which I'm worried might have caused the problem. Thanks! Simon

  • Safari and Mail won't open in Snow Leopard

Any else having this VERY frustrating problem of Safari and Mail not opening. I've installed Snow Leopard and downloaded and installed the 10.6.1 update. Then when I try to open Safari, it says, "You can't use this version of the application Safari with this version of Mac OS X. You have Safari 4.0.3." When I try to open Mail, it says the same thing. I downloaded Safari again, and it won't even install it saying, "Safari can't be installed on this disk. This update requires Mac OS X 10.5.8 or newer." But I have 10.6.1.
    Help. Anyone? Please?
    Thanks

    HI,
Try launching Safari and Mail from the Applications folder. If it works, drag the Safari and Mail icons off the Dock. Just drag straight up. They'll go poof.
With Safari or Mail open, select the icon in the Dock/Keep in Dock.
If that doesn't help, locate these files.
    com.apple.Mail.plist
    com.appple.Safari/plist
Drag those files to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac.

  • IPhoto won't open since Snow Leopard upgrade

    Hi,
Since upgrading to snow leopard iPhoto won't open, it just crashes instantly. I ahve tried reinstalling with no luck.
    Can anybody help with this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dan.

i just bought a new MBP 13'' 2.53 Ghz 4Gb Ram 250GB HD... i tried moving my iPhoto library from my powerbook g4 1.67 machine that was running 10.4.11 (via a Lacie external)
once i moved this and opened iPhoto (on my new MBp running 10.6.1 - SNOW LEOPARD) it instantly asks me to upgrade the library (saying that the old library needs upgrading for this version), so i click upgrade, and then 2 seconds later it says that the library is corrupt and damaged and i must install from a back up...
I deleted iPhoto then emptied trash after clearing up some space on the external, meaning i lost iPhoto applicaton - IDIOT I KNOW - so i download iPhoto 8.1 and the library upgrade and error / damaged library message appeared again...
I have now, (as i type this right now) re-installed snow leopard from the snow leopard disk that came in the MBP box (i have had it like 2 weeks, thats it, it shipped with leopard and i am having to install SNOW LEOPARD, for the 2nd time) to get iPhoto back)... will this give me iPhoto back, or do i have to re-install from the LEOPARD OS disks that were sent in the MBP box, the OS that it shipped with?
i am very annoyed that it seems that my iPhoto library from a 3.75year old machine cant be on my new machine unless i re-add each PBG4Tiger10.4.11 individual library folder thru the interface of iPhoto on my new machine... (if indeed it will ever open)...
    PLEASE HELP !

  • FCP 6.0.6 Won't Open with Snow Leopard!

I updated to FCP to 6.0.6 and the program now refuses to open. I've tried deleting preferences and removing Qmaster (which worked, but I reinstalled it after I upgraded to Snow Leopard thinking the OS 10.6 would solve the problem). Any other suggestions? I'm trying to avoid the reinstall, but this 6.0.6 update has been nothing but trouble!

That fortunately or unfortunately is really the best way to go. The pro apps are a LOT more demanding than the little stuff that comes bundled with the OS. There's an excellent post by Jerry Hofmann from not too long ago that details the process. Use the search window upper right and you'll find it pretty quickly.
When you're done, your machine will feel like it's brand new and really zippy. you'll love it. Don't forget to archive off to another drive all the stuff you want to keep and BE SURE you've got all your various install discs and passwords handy. It'll take a while. Patience and plenty of coffee.

  • Logic Express 7 won't open in Snow Leopard

    Hi
I hadnt opened my logic express 7 in a while, and in this period I upgraded to Snow Leopard. I tried to open it and it gets stuck with a message saying Loading Audio Files for "Dark FM Drive.exs"...
and it stays there with a beach ball and then I have to Force Quit.
Will my old Logic not work here?
    J

Have you tried to just open LE7 app, not a project? If it launches OK, then there is something wrong with the sound library files (could be permissions or a file-system bug). Also, if you installed SL 10.6 it makes sense to update it to the most recent and stable version, because the initial one was full of bugs, as I remember. You can also re-install LE7 (if anything else doesn't work).

  • Logic Express won't open in Snow Leopard

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard. Now, when I try to open Logic Express 7, the program immediately quits, with the error message below. I uninstalled/reinstalled and the problem still happens. I have also checked for software updates and no luck.
I already searched these forums. While it seems there are some other problems like this out there, I did not see a helpful answer.
    Process: Logic Express [64105]
    Path: /Applications/Logic Express.app/Contents/MacOS/Logic Express
    Identifier: com.apple.logic.express
    Version: 7.0.0 (7.0.0(818))
    Build Info: LogicExpress_ApplicationData-818000~1
    Code Type: PPC (Translated)
    Parent Process: launchd [670]
    Date/Time: 2010-06-06 21:42:59.714 -0600
    OS Version: Mac OS X 10.6.3 (10D573)
    Report Version: 6

I am fairly certain logic 7 is not compatible with Snow Leopard.

  • DVD Player app won't work with Snow Leopard

I installed Snow Leopard recently. I tried to watch a DVD with DVD player. It wouldn't work. I got this message in a box: "You can't use this version of the application DVD Player with this version of Mac OS X. You have DVD Player 5.0.3."
I looked for a recent DVD player update/download and could not find one. Same with Snow Leopard updates...
Does anybody know the fix or the workaround?
    Thanks,
    Estel Dillon

    HI,
Download and install the 10.6.2 combo update available here.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959
    Then repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
In the future, when updating system software, click the Apple Menu  /Software Updates. If that doesnt't work then go here: http://support.apple.com/downloads/ and use the standalone installers.
*The DVD Player application is not available to reintall from the SL disc*. If after the suggestions above haven't helped, then back up your important data before you do anything, then reinstall Snow Leopard.
You can reinstall the following apps from your SL disc.
    Address Book
    iCal
    iChat
    iTunes
    Mail
    Oxford Dictionaries
    Safari
    and X11

  • CS2 won't open on Snow Leopard - any secrets you care to share?

I just got an imac with snow leopard pre-installed...and I installed PS CS2 and low and behold - the application stalls when opening Photoshop. while installing, imac informed me that rosetta had to be installed so I agreed. Photoshop doesn't open but Image Ready opens fine (a program I don't use).
What to do? Is there something else I can try to do other than upgrading to CS5?
I've read in some of these discussions that some people have CS2 running fine and if yours does - what is the secret?
    many thanks!

This problem occasionally happens for upgrade installs. I believe what's happening for you is that your Mail dock icon points to the wrong place. This can happen if you have another copy of Mac OS X installed on another volume, or if you ever moved Mail from its /Applications folder.
If that's indeed the problem, the fix is: remove Mail from your Dock, open a Finder window and go to the /Applications folder, launch Mail from Finder, and choose the "Keep in Dock" menu item for the Mail dock icon.

  • Address Book won't open in Snow Leopard

    Hi,
    I have Snow Leopard 10.6.1
When I try opening my address book I get the message: "You can't use this version of the application Address Book with this version of Mac OS X. You have Address Book 4.1.1."
    How can this be?
This is not quite an emergency since I still have access to my address book through Mobile Me, or my Entourage address book, but still.
    Anybody understand this issue?
    Thanks

Hey guys I had the exact same problem as you did and didn't find the fix until opening the Guest Account wiped my entire profile. (seen in the Login forum)
From what I can tell, you need to make a new user account for the Contacts application to work, as it replaces it with a new version (5.0), if you don't want to copy over all your files to a new account you could try copying over Contacts 5.0 to your other users Documents folder, then copying it from there to the Applications folder on your old user.
    Hope I've helped

  • ICal 3.0.8 won't open with Snow Leopard 10.6

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard. When I try to open iCal, I get an error message that reads "You can't use this version of the application iCal with this version of Mac OS X. You have iCal 3.0.8."
    How do I fix this?

First of all, are you sure you're not opening iCal from another volume?
If you're sure you didn't, did your SL installation get interrupted? Because it should have installed iCal 4.0.
I'm not sure if you can just run the SL installer again or not. But that's not a good sign -- who knows what else might have got skipped. I hesitate to recommend any course of action in your case, but check into reinstall options.

  • Mail won't open in Snow Leopard

Ever since i installed the snow leopard upgrade i can't open apple Mail. When I try to open the application it comes up with a message: "You can't use this version of the application Mail with this version of Mac OS X. You have Mail 3.6."
I tried looking everywhere for an update for Mail, but i cant find one anywhere. Any ideas on how to get this fixed?

  • Safari 5 won't open on Snow Leopard; cannot upgrade to Safari 6 since it requires Lion.

I can use Firefox and Chrome with no problem but like the Apple format better.  This is the first time I have ever had issues with products that are partners with Apple.  Please someone fix it.  "Oh well" is not acceptable:-)

HI and welcome to Apple Discussions...
Open a Finder window. Select MacintoshHD in the Sidebar on the left. Now open the Library folder then the InputManagers folder.
Move these files to the Trash: CTLoader/ctloader.bundle/Contents/MacOS/ctloader
Now from the same LIbrary folder open the Application Support folder and move these files to the Trash:
    Conduit/Plugins/cttoolbar.bundle/Contents/MacOS/ct_plugins
and back in that Library folder again open the Scripting Additions folder. Move these files to the Trash:
    ctscripting.osax/Contents/MacOS/ctscripting
    Relaunch Safari.

  • Port 80 won't open on snow leopard server

For some reason, one of my web servers has stopped working.  When I do a port scan, it does not show port 80 as open.  I have another web server, running tiger server, and it is fine.  I have check my firewall settings, and they are fine, allowing http and https.   I have deleted httpd.conf and restored the default about 5 times today, but no luck.  I have done a software update, and am running SLS 10.6.8.  I would appreciate any suggestions.  This happened once about a year ago, and restoring the default httpd.conf fixed.  Not this time.

Thank you so much for your help.  Ran the configtest, and there was a syntax problem with one of the site config files.  For some reason it was trying to start squirrelmail, even though I had not checked the mail checkbox in Server Admin.   Then I checked the error log as you suggested, and for some strange reason the same config file for the same site was trying to point to an error log at /var/log/httpd  instead of /var/log/apache2.   Considering that I used Server Admin to setup the site config, these errors are a little frustrating.  The short answer to your now moot question is that I was restoring the httpd.conf file because I was stupid and desperate.  I suspected there was some corruption, I just was not smart enough to track the corruption down to the other config files until you pointed me in the right direction.   Thank you again for your generosity in donating your talents to this dicussion board.  I was totally stumped.

Mail refuses to open after update, when initated it flashes in the tray then disappears, has apple a fix for this problem?
    Or admits it exists.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4424?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Fellow user Grant Bennet-Alder offers this solution:
Some users have reported this problem if the Mail Application has been moved out of the top-level /Applications folder, or duplicated in another location.
When the Security Update is done, the old version of Mail is disabled.
    The solution has been to:
    1) make certain Mail is in the /Applications folder
    2) There is no other copy anywhere else.
    3) Once steps 1 and 2 have been done, Manually download and re-apply the Security Update (2012-004) by hand.
    Security Update 2012-004 (Snow Leopard)
If the Mail.app has been LOST, it can be re-installed by applying the 10.6.8 version 1.1 combo update. But this update is quite large and it is usually not necessary:
