Appstore unknown error
When I try and Upgrade to Mavericks, from an IMac (10.7.5), I get There was an error in the App Store. Please try again later. (4), when trying to log into appstore.
I think my appleid is the problem.
It's a very old (2004) appleid, originally obtained under email address X, then at some point changed to my current email address.
I later purchased an IPhone 5, and started using my appleid again after MANY years of non use.
Once I started using it, I could only log on to the appstore from ONE of my two devices (iMac & iPhone).
The first time I tried my apple ID on the iMac, after it working fine on the iPhone, it wouldn't let me log in. I reset the password, and the iMac worked, but then the iPhone wouldn't. I'd reset the password while on the iPhone, and it would work, but then the iMac would not work. So now every time I use the appstore from a different device, I HAVE to reset the password.
So I reset my appleid password from the iMac, thinking it would fix the 'Unknown Error' when trying to log on for the OS upgrade, but still no luck.
I got the same thing. Just called support. In the app store application, on the tool bar at the top of you screen, click 'store' and 'sign out'. Then from the same drop down menu, click 'sign in' and sign in. Then, try the install again.

Any idea why I can't purchase stuff off either iTunes or AppStore? I am getting a message saying unknown error has occurred immediately I enter my password.
Brett,
Well done getting the wireless network secured.
You have to precede the (hex) password with a '$' in Mac OS, to tell the Internet Connect dialog box that you are keying a hex password (rather than ASCII). This is because the Mac has detected that the network is WEP protected, and leaves it to you to decide how you want to key the password.
As an alternative, in Internet Connect (or from the AirPort icon menu), you can elect to join an "Other" network. If you select your network again, it'll come up with "WEP Password" as the option of Wireless Security. You can change this to "WEP 40/128-bit hex" and then not have to precede your password with the '$'.
Alternatively, you could tell us the make and model of your wireless router and we can tell you how to set, and use an ASCII password. From your 10-character hex password, we can see that you're using 40/64-bit WEP. Non-Apple routers can be a bit fussy when using ASCII passwords with 40-bit WEP (don't worry, this is also true for Windows PC's using 40-bit WEP too), but we can talk you through it.
As a final alternative, as you have such a whizzy Mac, as long as your wireless router supports it, you could use WPA security, and never have to worry about ASCII / hex / '$', etc. Older Macs (particularly original AirPort cards - not AirPort Extreme - and OS9) were limited to 40-bit WEP. -

I am getting an error message saying "an unknown error has occurred" everytime I try and down load an App. My ID and password are entered correctly. What am I doing wrong and how do I get rid of this?
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select "/var/log/install.log" from the file list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Then select the messages from the last installation or update attempt, starting from the time when you initiated it. If you're not sure when that was, start over and note the time. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting. -

Try deleting the cache associated wi the App Store.
Quit the App Store if it's open.
Now open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy/paste: ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore
Click Go then move the Cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash.
Try the App Store. -

When trying to update apps in the App store, after being prompted to log into the app store, I get the error message "An unknown error has occurred" in red. Thanks!Make sure you are signed out of iTunes before signing in to the Mac App Store.
And try deleting App Store pref file..
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.appstore.plist

Restart your Mac and try the App Store. -

Mac App Store says "Unknown error."
The Mac App store is giving me an "unknown error" when I try to install a purchased app or but another app.
I *think* this is a result of me running a chmod or chown recursively on the wrong directory. I've run the "Restore Disk Permissions" on my main partition and although that said it fixed some things, it didn't solve my App store problem.
What user, group, and permissions do I need to set and on what files and directories do I need to set them in order for this to work?
As a side-note, I'm logged into the app store with my only account. Choosing "Sign Out" from the "Store" menu does nothing. I upgraded to OS X 10.7.4 and rebooted today. I've deleted the App Store cache files and rebooted.
Thanks,
JoelHi Joel ...
How about third party software. If you have anti virus software installed, disable that.
Little Snitch can cause the issues you are experiencing also.
And try deleting the App Store cookies .plist
Go to ~/Libary/Cookies
Move the com.apple.appstore.plist file from the Cookies folder to the Trash.
Try the App Store.

I keep getting an "unknown error" in App Store
Help please! when I try to purchase an App from the store it gives me an "unknown error" and won't let me purchase anything. can anyone help?
Here is a step-by-step of what worked for me:
Create a new user account - let's name it "Test" - I did not make this an administrator account
Log into that new user account (skipping the AppleID/iCloud screen)
Select "Software Update…" from the Apple menu - you will be asked to enter an administrator name and password in or to check for system updates - just provide your normal (admin-enabled) user name and password
If you have any updates available, click "Update All" and log into the AppStore with your normal AppleID/password (this should work since you are in a new user account)
(If you don't have any updates available, I assume that you can also log in using the menu item in the Store menu of the AppStore application though I have not tried that)
As soon as the download starts, you can quite the AppStore application
Log out of your test account and back into your normal account
Open /Applications/Utilies/Terminal
Type the following command:
sudo cp /Users/test/Library/Cookies/com.apple.appstore.plist Library/Cookies/
Open the AppStore again and you should be able to log back in
What does this do? It seems that the com.apple.appstore.plist file in your normal user account has become corrupted - we use a new account and create a new one (which is interchangebale since we use the same AppleID) and move that one back to the main account with the corrupt file.

Why wont my appstore let me download any apps? I know my password is right but it keeps giving me " Unknown error." and I have to either cancel or retry and every time I retry i get the same thing.
Hello jsimmonds05,
I was looking into our resources for information that may help resolve the issue and have a few things for you to try. First I would start with the iPhone Troubleshooting Assistant found here: http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/assistant/phone/#section_1, at section 1 and work your way down as needed.
Restart iPhone
To restart iPhone, first turn iPhone off by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until a red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider and iPhone will turn off after a few moments.
Next, turn iPhone on by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Is iPhone not responding? To reset iPhone, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If your device does not turn on or displays a red battery icon, try recharging next
Just in case that doesn't get the App store to function correctly, you can use this article titled iTunes: Advanced Store Troubleshooting found here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3297?locale=en_US&viewlocale=en_US.
All the Best,
Sterling
