April 2010 MacBook Pro Heat issues.

My first post and first Mac, so please be patient....
MCP 15" HiRes glossy, Intel i7, 500G 7200rpm HD, (you know the rest)
I had bought my MBP in late April, the machine is great had no issues at all outperformed any comparable machine I put it up against. After having it a couple weeks I decided to push the video card a bit to see how it handled gaming. I reopened my World of Warcraft account and noticed a great deal of heat being put off by the machine(too hot to touch above function keys). For days I read forums on both Apple and World of Warcraft to see if the heat output is normal or not.
Things unclear to me are what exactly is Apple, Nvidia, and Intel claiming to be normal operating heat levels? (Exact temps please, I monitor using istat)I am running World of Warcraft between 160 F and 170 F and occasionally in the 180's with the frame rate dummied down to 30 fps and some other settings reduced. I should not have to do that. Its used on a flat surface, no obstructions. I refuse to buy an extended warranty for a built in system killer such as heat(would rather return and pay less). Did a hardware test everything passed. Fans running normal between 2000 and 3000rpms during use. Like I said in the first sentence this is my first Mac and think this is a little too hot in my opinion, but I am no expert so if i am wrong please tell me. I love the notebook but am worried about the heat, and cannot afford to shell out another $2200 in a year or two for a notebook that over time failed from heat issues.
I am coming from an HP ZD8000 with a 256mgb ATI video card that had only gotten a little bit luke warm at maximum settings and 60 fps in World of Warcraft, but that desktop replacement had 4 fans.
Should I have Genius bar do a GPU test? or is this heat acceptable?

Nate, welcome to Apple Discussions!
In short, your temperatures are perfectly normal. In fact, they're a bit on the cool side. I assume you're reporting the CPU diode ("CPU") temperature using iStat? If so, the temps are completely and perfectly normal.
170ºF is only 76ºC. The CPU is rated up to 105ºC (221ºF). If you've got the fans speeding up at that temperature then it is running perfectly normally. You've got a lot more room there before anything ever becomes damaged. And, rest assured, if the temperatures ever climbed to a point where damage is possible (I've never heard of that and I've been on these MBP forums for 2 years) then the machine will automatically shut itself off. There is no way that you could do damage to it with heat.
Like I said in the first sentence this is my first Mac and think this is a little too hot in my opinion, but I am no expert so if i am wrong please tell me.
You're wrong. It's perfectly normal. You don't need to be worried. They're designed to run warm under heavy load. People use these things for rendering and encoding video all day long. Yours will be just fine if you play Warcraft on it once in a while. Bump up the settings a bit too; I don't see why that would generate any more or less heat.

Well, that's the problem. That thing was plastic, correct? And probably 2" thick? With huge fan vents on the back? The MBP is exactly the opposite of that. Metal conducts heat much better, and helps to cool the computer too. However, you also feel the heat more. The MBP is half the thickness of that thing, and doesn't have the vents either or the huge fans. All it means is it will heat up a bit more, but it's been designed just fine with that heat in mind.

  • Mid-2010 Macbook Pro - Sudden Issues everywhere

Ok, so I've got a Mid-2010 Macbook Pro and just before Christmas all of a sudden issues just popped up everywhere. I'll give you a rundown of what all i've seen and what all I've done since.
So I start getting a message something like
    - AppleSecurity - Unauthorized caller ...popping up intermittently. And then,
    - Firefox, once you shut the window down you couldn't get open again, and when you quit the app the computer seemed to freeze
    - ITunes wouldnt open
    - App Store wouldnt open
    - Safari would only open some webpages
    - Steam worked 10% of the time.
    - Powerpoint and Word would crash or not save etc.
    - I had to push the button to restart to get the thing working again and from time to time it would freeze or crash shutdown at the grey screen.
    - I kept getting small indications that the memory was full.
    - Cant shut down or restart without holding the button
So I deleted stuff, generally cleaned up unneeded files etc. ... Same problems. I eventually got so exasperated that I just stuck everything I needed on a flash drive and wiped the user and started a new one.
Same problems but slightly better.... So at this point I go into the Apple Store and go to the Genius bar - The guy wipes runs a check on my hard drive and everything ticks the boxes barring battery which is at 74% roughly. Then he wipes everything off to a factory restart, updates it, then hands it back.
I get it back home and I have issues even setting up the user as if it was a new macbook. I have untick all the set time zone and network stuff to get it to work.
I get it back going and ... still problems... but slightly better. But I cant update flash, steam crashes, sometimes again things dont work. Safari sometimes doesnt open some webpages and I have to restart to get things to get working again.
Also, things seem to be a little better when I'm using the universities internet as opposed to the one in my flat.
SO...! Back into the Apple Store, Genius Bar, he runs a full check on the drive because he seen some I/O errors in the console. AND.. everything passes. He runs a full daignostic and still can't figure it out. He says he seen some weird messages about Steam causing problems in the console but that was it, which I dont think could be the problem because I was getting problems before I even reinstalled it after the factory wipe/reset. The network causing problems maybe?
What do I do people? No-one at the Apple Store can pinpoint whats going on?! I really want to get this fixed because I need this for uni and I can't afford a new one
    Please Help!

    poikkeus1,
After getting a "properly" functioning LB, the temps are much lower than that, even when beating onit doing live recording. idle 25-30 degrees max, beating it with a "pile of inputs" recording 65-70
The first machine i spent over 4 hours with a senior engineer doing an ARA, it was like someone took a shotgun and blasted the data all over the place.
I switched machines (after 30 days, which would say they knew they had an issue)
Second time temps off the map, and unexplainable "bizzare" behavior. (random)
second time same deal, all over the place.
Now everything seems happy, for months now. (I hope I just did not jinx myself)
It sure seems that would be the place to look, hence you should ask for the flat rate repair.
    Best

  • Failed Logic Board with April 2010 MacBook Pro?

I went to the Genius Bar today to ask about repeated Kernel Errors with my 2010 MacBook Pro. The person who helped me said that the logic board was failing because of the graphics card and that it would cost $310 to repair.
My Mac is an A1286 model with NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 256 MB Graphics.
Reading about Macs with NVIDIA graphics I immidately found that there were issues with the generation prior to my Mac, 2007-2008 Macs with NVIDIA 8600M GT.
So what I want to know is have any other Mac users had issues with their 2010 Macs and their graphics cards? My Mac has always run hot (too hot to actually use as a laptop because it turns my legs red!) and I figured it was just the nature of the machine. I now have one USB drive that is slowly failing (doesn't like my mouse). I haven't had any weird graphics issues, just the random restarts and a freeze now and then.

My March 2010 15" Macbook Pro's logic board just failed.  Here's my report:

  • MacBook Pro Heat Issue

I just recently received my MacBook Pro this past Wednesday and I've been addicted since. This is the first Mac I've ever owned and felt it was time to move onto something better and more stable than M$. I do use Linux but it doesn't have near the support like Mac does except maybe Suse (only because of Novell).
My problem is my MacBook Pro gets very hot. I've read the entire book that came with my machine and I noticed that it said that the operating temps are between 50-95F (10-35C). Am I reading/understanding this wrong? I've performed average use of my machine and have used a Class 2 Laser thermometer (made by Stanley) to take the temp and i've reached up to 115 degrees F just above my function keys.
If i remember correctly from left to right it goes Northbridge, GPU, and then CPU. The 115 mark was at my CPU on the far right side. I also never hear the fan on this machine come on. This is the quietest lappie I've ever heard after extended use. You hear the fans spin up all the time in the Dells, Gateways, Compaqs, etc.
One of my coworkers turned me to the overheating issue with these machines and it made me quite nervous. I understand that they had somebody who had cerebral palsy apply the thermal grease. What i gather and understand is that is now become an insulator instead of an adhesive. Is there a Real way to remedy this situation?
I've read stories of people having this issue and stating they took the machine apart themselves, cleaned up the goop, reapplied AS5 and their temps dropped (from reports) 15-25F and even only 2 degrees F. I know that silicon can take a beating in the heat but i'm kind of worried about the other components in my machine.
Is this firmware update really going to make a difference or is this some form of coverup? I'm being cynical now but i'm worried that such a great product is going to be a very large paperweight. I ran tests on my old Gateway 600 series laptop (top of the line when i got it) and it hangs and about 98-99F at its high points. The fan also kicks on and is loud as **** but seems to cool it enough to be reasonable. Although, this machine does make me quite warm when sitting on my lap.
Does anyone have ANY ideas as to what can be done? Or what have you done to try and remedy the issue? Am I doomed like the rest of you that have this lappie? I haven't seen anything from apple about this issue other than some firmware update.
Thanks for the help and ideas in advance!

Master P, you did misunderstand Apple's specifications for the range of operating temperatures. Those specifications apply to the ambient environment in which you operate the computer. In other words, Apple recommends against using your computer if your room temperature is at 95 F or above, or below 50 F -- temperatures that would be uncomfortable both for you and the computer. Of course some people such as photojournalists do productively use their MBPs in extreme environments such as the Sahara Desert or the upper slopes of Mount Everest, but I'm sure they understand they are reducing the life expectancy of some of the components, such as the hard drive in the computer.
A temperature of 115 F or higher on the metal strip behind the function keys is perfectly OK. You don't need to touch that strip to use the computer. My criterion is whether the parts that I need to touch remain comfortable -- the keyboard, trackpad and wrist rest areas. They do on my computer, although the left wrist area can reach body temperature after extended use.
In my opinion the recommendations to remove and reapply thermal grease fall into the Urban Myth category and do not make technical sense. And performing that "fix" will likely void the warranty and an AppleCare policy, should you subsequently have a logic board or CPU failure. The "fix" will be immediately visible to Apple service folk should the computer have to be sent in for repair.
No, you are not doomed. My CPU temperatures after hours of operation generally run in the 40 to mid-50 C range, depending on what I'm doing. At the moment CoreDuo Temp is reporting 48 C. Continuous 100% load of both processors for extended periods results in CPU temperatures in the 60s-70s C, which is well below the maximum continuous operating temperatures specified by Intel.
The SMART disk temperature of my 7,200 rpm hard drive has always been reported by Hardware Monitor to stay well below the operating temperature maximum of 55 C recommended by Seagate.
So I expect to get years of useful service from the MBP.
Both because I like the tilt for typing and because it provides an additional heat sink to cool the computer in heavy use, I use an aluminum tilt stand whether the MPB is on my desk or in my lap. I use a KoolSink because it's very portable, but there are many laptop stands that work well.

  • 17" MacBook Pro Heat Issues

Hi everybody, I recently got a 17" MBP but have been having some issues with heat. I have been looking into the issue online on various message boards, have read extensively on the thermal paste idea (though have not opted to attempt this yet), etc. My serial number is W8621, so it is not a very early model afaik. I have been using the computer daily for good amounts of time, at first on my lap, but after that became unbearable, on a hard surface. I do have the SMC update. I hope I am not forgetting any important information.
Anyways, I have been struggling with the heat which I have recorded using Speedit and CoreDuoTemp to be between 65 and 75 degrees C idle and exactly 90 degrees load (using yes > /dev/null, I know some people argue over if this really stresses the system to the max, but for my purposes I think it shows my problem well enough). I have even recorded a peak temperature of 94 degrees C, or a scorching 201 degrees F. All of this translates to an untouchable case at various points including the bottom, the left side, and the keyboard (both the bottom near the space bar and the top near the F keys). I know these machines will and do run hot, but I think that mine is running especially hot and I am looking to ideas on what to do. Though I probably would have no issue redoing the thermal paste I would rather go through more official ways of fixing the problem. I did get Applecare with the computer so I have plenty of time to take it in, but I was wondering what if anything they could do, because last I have heard they don't really acknowledge the problem.
Anybody with similar issues want to share their experience and what they told Apple was the problem? I don't want to go into my Apple store only for them to tell me the paste is not an issue, or the heat is within spec, or that there is nothing they can do.
As if this wasn't enough, it seems that I have developed the 'whine' problem over the past day or two. I first heard about this problem a day or so after I got the MBP, but never noticed it or heard it even when trying to, so I thought I got by with a working one. However, over the past day I have noticed a high-pitched sound that varies in pitch slightly but is on almost all the time, with slight pauses ever 20 seconds or so. This occurs with the power cord plugged in, as it has been since I have got the machine. I have not had the computer unplugged for an extended period of time (over an hour) since I got it. I have not attempted any fixes, and honestly don't want to, but again if this is a decent reason for them to check it out I would appreciate any advice. It is gradually going from noticeable to annoying, and I am starting to get upset with my otherwise beautiful and perfectly working computer.
Thanks in advance for any help! If you need me to post anything else just let me know, I really want to take care of this before I take it to school in the fall.
    17" MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Maximum PC Magazine had an article about the MacBook Pro's heating problems in the May 06 issue. They basically said that after opening the case up, they noticed that Apple was applying a huge chunk of thermal paste between the CPU and the cooling element.
Applying too much thermal paste to the CPU is actually bad. It will act as an insulating barrier causing heat to build up rather than dissipate through the cooling element.
So after they scraped off the thermal paste gunk, they reapplied some Artic Silver (the best thermal paste on the market) to the CPU and noticed about a 10 degree Celcius decrease in temperature.
Apple's only official response to overheating has been that sometimes people forget to take off the packaging tape covering the vents.

    Anyway, food for thought....

  • Retina MacBook Pro Heat Issues ?

    Hello,
i have noticed that my new MacBook Pro with Retina Display gets exceptionally hot, especially when playing some fairly basic games like "Tomb Raider Underworld". I have noticed the heat in the area of the Keyboard an the bottom. The aluminum between the keys gets so hot that i can barely touch it.
Has anybody got the same issue ?
    What should i do ?

see Vastly Improved Thermals from AnaandTech as part of their review of the Retina MacBook Pro.   If you check the bottom of the page you can see if you GPU stress test the laptop it can get sufficiently hot.   About the middle of this page, you can see how Apple redeigned the heat pipes along with fans to bleed off Heat.

  • MacBook Pro heat issues solved!?

    Hi Guys.
I am the proud owner of a MacBook Pro which until this week had been performing rather well if a little, who am I kidding, a lot hot.
At the start of the week the OS started to freeze on me so I downloaded a third party app called smcFanControl which basically lets you reset the minimum fan speed for your MacBook. It also most conveniently shows you the temperature of your CPU. My CPU was idling at between 75-80 degrees C.
When I did anything on the machine it would rise to 80+ and the OS would freeze needing a restart to bring it back to life. I have all the latest updates and firmwares so this wasnt an issue. I also had tried to reset the SMC (is this right?) by removing the battery and holding the power button in for the required 5 seconds. All to no avail and the lappy continued to be a roasting hot coal. Incidentally CPU occupancy had risen to 85-90% (on 1 core at least)even at idle with no usage shown in activity monitor
After doing some surfing I became aware of the 'too much thermal paste' issue afflicting MB Pros. I called a friend who works for the local Applecentre and we chatted at length about this thermal paste issue and the reult was he volunteered to take my MB into work and examine it for himself.
He stripped it down this morning and after an hour and a half called me to say he had had it to bits, found the 3 chips, CPU GPU and northbridge, to be literally caked in thermal paste. He has removed it, re-applied a nice thin layer and re-assembled the machine. Then he returned it to me at work this afternoon.
What can I say but the results are far beyond my expectations. My Mac now at idle is no hotter than 40 degrees C and during rendering and burning a DVD using iDVD this afternoon it didnt even make 60 degrees C! I am astounded and very happy. My MB Pro is now how it should have been 'out of the box' and even after only a few hours use its obviously a much more pleasurable experience.
So if anyone tells you that the excess heat in an MB Pro isnt caused by excess thermal paste show them my post because in my experience its the main cause.
    Thanks for reading.
p.s. heres a link to a pic of my MB Pro logic board before my friend removed the excess paste.
    http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f363/patos1/MacbookMobo.jpg

Forgot to mention that my MB is a week 9 model.
After the re-application of the thermal paste the CPU activity has dropped to low singles at idle on both cores as well.
I know this post isnt exacty a question for technical help but I feel that my experience may be helpful to other people having the same issues, so thats the reason for posting.
After all if I can help others by posting my findings then surely thats a good thing??

  • Macbook pro heating issue

My new macbook pro bought in 2013 13.3'' 8gb ram 2.9 ghz seems to heat up a lot in the bottom of the notebook when am just downloading too much from the internet... Is this normal or is there some problem with the laptop

It probably is normal.  If you want to check, download from the Internet, 'istat menus':
    http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/
Open Activity Monitor and set it to ALL PROCESSES and %CPU to display values from high to low.
When the MBP gets 'hot', take screen shots of both and post for evaluation.
    Ciao.

  • Macbook Pro Heat Issues

I got my Macbook Pro a few months ago and ever since then the CPU has been getting very hot very quickly, When I loaded up Runescape for the first time it was only using 33% CPU and it was 83 degrees Celcuis. Does anyone think I should get Apple to check out my Macbook Pro?

Your temperature is high, but not inconsistent with current model MBPs. You might find this information useful:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2764570?start=0&tstart=0
    1. Download the free SMC fan control application, which allows you to vary the fan and temperature of your laptop.
    2. Keep your laptop as cool as possible. Okay, it already looks pretty cool, but I'd avoid computing on your lap (which can double the heat of your MacBook), and be aware of temperature-sensitve activities like burning disks, playing Flash movies, and putting the laptop on surfaces that absorb heat. Your laptop should work fine doing all this, but high temperatures aren't your machine's friend.
    3. Passive heat devices like Little Feet allow better airflow under your MBP.
In other words...don't worry, but be aware.

  • Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 13inch - Issues w/ all browsers

Hello all! Please read the entire post before replying.  I have attempted several fixes for my problem based on other posts, but to no avail.
Problem:  My mid-2010 MBP is having issues w/ all browers (Safari, Chrome, Mozilla).  Simply, I'll be online with email, reading news, shopping, working, etc. and the browser is working fine and then out of the blue when I attempt to go to a new page the status bar will load about 15%-20% (as if it's working properly), then stop and advance no further.  The remainder of the page will not load and I am unable to do anything online.  This happens regardless of the browser I am using.  The only immediate fix I have found is to quit the app and restart the computer.  I have had this problem in several differnet locations and on several different networks.  There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when or where this happens.  There are sometimes where the browser works fine.
    Attempted Solutions:
    1. Uninstalling and reinstalling all 3 of the above mentioned browsers.  Didn't help.
    2. Purchased and Installed MacKeeper.  Ran scans to check for viruses, maleware, etc. - any issue located was dealt with appropraitely.  And the problem persisted.
    3. Ran Apple Hardware Test from the disc that came with my MBP (Both quick and longer versions of the test).  No hardware issue was located.
    4. Ok so maybe the issue is software.  Attempted to reinstall Mac OS X from disc that came with my MBP (Snow Leopard).  Please note that my current OS is Maverick 10.9.2.  Upon restarting with "C" help down, I begin to navigate through the prompts.  About step 3 where I must select the startup disk, I chose the local HD.  I receive an error message at the bottom that I cannot use my local HD as the startup disk, but there is no other option.  I am not sure what's going on here.  There may be an error with running Maverick and attempting to go backwards to Snow Leopard, but if the issue is software OS related how can I reinstall my OS?
The only next option, that I am aware of, is to replace the physical wifi component as that might be the issue.  However, the Wifi signal always shows there is a signal and will dsicover mutliple networks (where there are multiple networks).
Does anyone else have this problem or know of a possible solution I haven't tried?
    Thanks in advance!!

  • Whats happening with the  2011 macbook pro heating issue?

    Hi guys,
I have a 2011 mbp 15" 2.2ghz and i am wondering  if the heating issue is affecting me?
I tried seeing what my max temperature was...
I played taken in hd and bourne ultamatim trailer  at the same time with 2 youtube video playing while plying modern combat.. i had around 85 celcius mark
    Is this normal?
Do i need to get the Thermal Paste changed? whats the deal with this?
Also I heard that apple disabled turbo boost, is that correct or false?

one of the benefits of a laptop
Laptop is a misnomer often applied to notebook computers.
have Apple say their computers should not be used on my lap
Notebook computers violate all basics of ergonomics to facilitate portability. Many users require more comfort than is achieved when using a notebook, which is why stands, external keyboards and mice are all offered by third party vendors to enhance the user experience of their notebook computer.
No human being that has reasonably good posture habits should consider using their lap as a top for a portable computer.
It makes my neck hurt just thinking about it........
I can't believe that OSHA, Workman's Comp Insurance, etc., doesn't have rules against the improper use of notebook computers.....
is supposed to be the ability to not be at a desk.
One of the benefits of these computers is portability. Whether or not that is involves a desk is up to conditions at hand.
Misuse of this portability does not negate the positve attributes that abound.
If you don't want red marks on your lap, use the machine properly....

  • Mid 2010 macbook pro slow to sleep. No print queu issues.

Hey everyone! My Mid 2010 macbook pro slow is slow to go to sleep. I have read several community forums and I've checked for old print jobs (which seems to be a common issue) and have found none. I've also reset all printers and jobs.  Anyways, it takes 35 to 60 seconds to go sleep (until fan/harddrive turns off/I see blinking white light).  This slow sleep occurs even with a complete fresh install of Mavericks, and even after installing a new SSD. I am honestly at a loss.
I did the "pmset -g log" command and I have found two reoccurring things that I think might be the reason (though I don't really understand it fully). • Mid 2010 macbook pro that has sleeping issues

I have a mid 2010 macbook pro that has had problems sleeping and the screen goes randomly black but does not put the actual computer to sleep and you can still see and move the cursor. It seems like tons of people have had the same issue. I recently updated the software to mountain lion but it did not help. The problem is when I close the lid, it does not go to sleep and wastes tons of battery or goes black while i am working on it. HELP!

  • Mid 2010 Macbook pro - Mini DisplayPort to Hdmi issues

Hi there! I'm having some issues connecting my mid 2010 Macbook pro to my 32" Toshiba LED TV.
I'm running OS X Version 10.8.2 , as mentioned before, on the mid 2010 Macbook pro.
The issue which I have, is that when I connect my Hdmi cable to my minidisplay port through the adapter, I keep getting a blue screen popping up.
I am using a Startech MiniDisplay to HDMI Adapter Converter and ION 6FT Flat HDMI CABLE.
    anyone with suggestions on help?

I had issues with getting my MBP to work with my Vizio XVT323SV via the RGB port. What worked for me was downloading SwitchResX (http://www.madrau.com/indexSRX4.html) and setting up a custom 1920x1080 resolution using the values found in the Vizio user guide. Works like a champ now. Best shareware investment I ever made. Now I can watch my EyeTV recordings at full HD resolution.
    Hope this helps. Good luck!
Sidebar: I also bought the Griffin mini-DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and an HDMI cable, but I can't get any signal at all via that connection. The Mac doesn't see the TV and the TV doesn't see a signal. Very frustrating. My RGB connection is good enough but I bet HDMI would be even better.

  • Mid-2010 MacBook Pro Safari/Graphics issue??

Hi. Below I've posted a picture of what I've been experiencing on my mid-2010 MacBook Pro that is running Mac OS X Lion (10.7.1).
Usually, my screen stays like that for a few seconds, then those little things go away. However, when I took the screenshot, my screen stayed like that for about 20 minutes. I've had this issue in both Safari and Firefox. Even updating to 10.7.1, this still happens.
What could possibly be wrong? Is it a bug with Lion or is my graphics card at fault?
I really appreciate your help! Thank you!!

    jodifromcinnaminson,
nope — one reason why the cost of Apple products in the US is low compared to prices in other countries is that the prices in other countries often include seller’s warranties which extend beyond the manufacturer’s warranty; that’s not the case in the US.
If you’re intent on purchasing no more Apple products because of how they’d handled the 15-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pro defect, then I’d highly recommend writing a letter to Apple explaining exactly why you’ve made that decision.
