April08 15" MBP Battery Dying

Guys
This is what profiler tells me. I got curious as I was getting very non linear battery consumption - one minute it would tell me I had significant time left, next sleepy bye byes. Thats with no significant usages changes.
Whats does the "Check battery" warning mean? I can;t find an explanation anywhere?
Looking at these stats is less than 80% in under 300 cycles - is this warrantable? I ask as I'm 5 days out of 12m warranty!
Also I regularly cycle as I always thought this was the best policy - even when I don't have to (i.e. mains power available) Is this actually bad practice?
Where's the best place in Aus to buy new one's? I'll be in Singapore next month - will that be cheaper?
Thanks

The 'check battery' status usually means the battery is not functioning properly. I'd contact AppleCare or visit an Apple Store as soon as possible - the battery is considered a consumable, but a defective battery will be replaced under warranty. You are approaching that 300 cycle mark as well as the end of the warranty, so contact Apple!
Also I regularly cycle as I always thought this was the best policy - even when I don't have to (i.e. mains power available) Is this actually bad practice?
Define 'cycle' for you...if you regularly run it all the way down, that's not a good idea. Frequent, light use is best - i.e. run on battery for an hour or two every other day, putting 1-2 cycles per week on your battery. With nearly 300 cycles in less than a year, I'd consider that heavy use of the battery.
If you do end up needing to buy a new battery, I'd get one from Apple (in Singapore, you run the risk of getting an inferior knock-off).

  • How fast does your MBP battery die?

    Hi everyone,
I've just received my third Macbook Pro battery. I used it ONCE and now it's down to 98% capacity. What is wrong with those batteries? Are yours degrading as fast?
Detail: I received the brand new battery. Charged it to 100%, left it charged for a few hours, and then drained it until the MBP went to sleep, left it until the LED went out (standard calibration procedure). After subsequent charging the capacity is only 5420 out of 5500 mAh.
Battery one was nearing 70% capacity after 3-4 months and was bulging (swollen battery issue). Battery two had less than 50% capacity left after less than 6 months and would cut power with no prior notice.
    MBP 1,8   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Clearly your first two batteries were bad. Don't freak out just yet, though. That magic number - 5500 mAh - is the nominal capacity of a new battery for a 15" MBP. Did you actually check the full charge capacity before you calibrated it? Because nominal means "stated or expressed but not necessarily corresponding exactly to the real value" (see definition #3 in the dictionary widget). So, it's possible that you actually started with a 5400 mAh battery which imporved with calibration, or a 5600 mAh battery that dropped more than 2%, etc. Point is, there have been some bad batteries (thank you, Sony!) and you were unlucky to get two in a row, but don't assume a 2% drop means you got a 3rd lemon.
I've got just over 60 cycles, and my battery 'health' fluctuates between 90% and 97% - and yes, I mean fluctuates- as in falls and rises - from charge to charge. Sometimes it will drop 3% in one charge cycle, then rise 5% the next, etc...
So, relax and just keep an occasional eye on it.

  • Battery died while installing Mavericks. Installation corrupted. Wont boot or resume install.

    Greetings,
A friend just called in a panic. He updated to Mavericks without plugging his MBP in. The battery died while updating and the computer won't boot into OS. It boots back into the installer but won't continue. Disk utility cant repair it. Any idea of how to help him? (he has no backup)
I may have him ship it to me, if it mounts on desktop I'll clone it, reinstal Mavericks, migrate his data.
What generally gets corrupted when a Mavericks installation is abruptly cut short?
Is there anything else to have him try before he ships it?

If his Mac is capable of it, I'd try Internet Recovery.

  • 17" MBP battery swelling

I've been searching the boards and have only seen swelling issues on the 15" MBPs but I have a 17" and my battery started swelling today! Has anyone heard of 17"ers having this problem? My Apple Customer Care support just ran out too! are they gonna even help me over the phone? My laptop should still be covered under the 1yr warranty. Any suggestions?

    Hello All,
My battery swelled up on me on the worse time! Not only did it swell up, but the battery stopped working. Last month, I noticed my battery was dying. I asked a "Genius" about this and he said it was normal. Some how with all his tech talk, he still didn't convince me. The battery was still expanding. But hey, he's a genius right? So I listened to him, and went on my merry way to my vacation in the Philippines.
I went to a small island in Cebu. Ever since high school, my dream was to program, swim, sit on the beach, and look at beautiful women. However, thanks to the battery dying, all I could settle for was the beach and beautiful women!
Anyway, there were hints that my battery was starting to die..
    Signs of Trouble:
1.) When the battery meter says you still have 30%-50% juice left, but the laptop dies on you anyway.
When this first happened, I was upset! I felt OS X was lying to me. But there wasn't much I could do. Anyway,
the Apple manual recommends the user should drain the battery at least once a month. As I was draining the battery, my laptop died on me at 50%.
I found out by looking at the battery, it looks like the battery is divided into two pieces. On one side, the lithium battery was normal and flat. On the other side, it was bulging. Luckily, it was one side that was bulging and not the other.
2.) If your trackpad becomes too sensitive And/Or the mouse button is getting hard to click on.
I thought it was my bad typing habits creeping back up. I thought my thumb or finger would hit the track pad, but when I investigated further I noticed it was something else. The one button mouse is an even bigger indicator that your battery is expanding because the battery pushes against the buttons.
3.) I had to put the laptop on my lap. Yikes! Something Apple doesn't recommend doing because of the heat the CPU generates. By doing this, the laptop was working normally again.
4.) Eventually, the laptop battery will not work and the AC Adapter light will just be green.
It's green because the energy is being fed directly to the computer and not to the battery. Right now, I'm using my laptop purely on the AC Adapter. Today, I'm going to the Apple Store to lay the smack down on those "Geniuses." I want my battery and my dream of programming on an island **** it!

  • How do i fix my issue: Apple Logo flashes on and off after iphone battery died during IOS update?

I've tried the methods I've seen on youtube and other iphone tech help sites but I am still having the same problem. Today while updating to IOS 7 my iphone 4 battery died and I didnt have a charger, now that I am home an I put in on the charger I notice the apple logo just flashes on and off. I've tried to restores using the DFU mode with the home and power button but that only seem to stop the logo from flashing and even then the iphone still isnt recognised by the pc to restore, Is there any other way i can go about fixing this problem!!!!

You can try the steps recommended in the User Guide.  If they don't work bring your phone into Apple for evaluation.

  • My first problem is that I have no apps on my iPod desktop. The second is that my battery died, and despite being able to charge it, it is unable to restart back up.

My first problem is that I have no apps on my iPod desktop. After using my computer to install something onto my iPod 5, it somehow disconnected. When i restarted the iPod, some apps (Safari, FaceTime, Game Center, App Store, iTunes Store, Camera, and some others disappeared. Apps like Flashlight and Jetpack Joyride which I had previousyl downloaded from the App Store were still there. I wanted to get the aforementioned apps back, so i decided to back-up my iPod to iTunes. The downloaded apps weren't able to be backed up ("authentication problems") but some apps like Tips, Video, iBooks, Reminders, Stocks, Settings, Voice Memos, were backed up. I then proceeded to factory reset the iPod, deleting everything and starting it as a new iPod. Once I finished this, I looked my desktop to see everything was gone, absolutely everything. I double-pressed the home button, showing Settings was open, but that's it. I opened settings and factory reset it again, this time choosing to restore from a backup. After doing this, I found the iPod looked the same as the last time i reset it - blank. If I scroll down the middle of the screen to bring up a search bar, I can find only the apps I backed up (Tips, Video, iBooks, Reminders, etc.) That is the first MAJOR problem. I was getting really frustrated, so I opened up iBooks and discovered I can download a could free books from the store, which was essentially the only thing I can use the iPod for. There were no videos in the Video app, and pressing the "Go to Store" button did absolutely nothing. No lag, it just ignored my touch. Once i found a few books, I decided to start reading. Eventually, i brought this iPod somewhere to read it, and didn't bring the charger with me. The battery died, and when i got home, tried charging it.
Which brings me to the second problem. A minute or so after I plugged in the charger into the dead iPod, the Apple logo came on. But the iPod never started up. The logo stayed there, getting dimmer after a minute, but no vanishing even after fully charging or pulling out the charging cord. It didn't leave even after hours, but by then the battery died again. If i press and hold the power button and the home button at the same time, the Apple logo disappears. But I can't get into recovery mode utilizing the volume buttons. If i hold the power button when the screen is blank, the Apple logo comes back. But the iPod cannot start up.
After everything was wiped, i was pretty angry. But I still had books to read, even if i couldn't do much else. Then the battery died, and it really wrecked me up. I feel so mad right now, although this actually happened about 4 days ago. The iPod being wiped happened about 3 days after the Christmas holidays began. This iPod also was not brand new, I bought it off a friend who had it for over a year, although it was in perfect condition (Obviously out of warranty.) I desperately need a solution to this HUGE problem. Due to personal reasons, I can't go to a Genius Bar or go to an Apple retailer in person, but communicating by E-mail is an option, as is instant messaging.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
The missing apps could have been done by setting the Restrictions that can hid those apps. If the backup was made with those retrictions set the the Restrictions are also restored.
Thus, if you get it to work restore to factory settings/new iPod, not from backup
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • My ipod touch is frozen on a screen with the ipod logo and the usb charger cable...i cannot get rid of it...i let the battery die...i held the sleep button and the power buttons..anyone have any ideas?

my ipod touch is frozen... the screen has a picture of the itunes logo and a usb charger. I have held the sleep button and the power button to reset and i have let the battery die and started to recharge...niether worked. any ideas???

Try charing it to 50% at least.
If all else fails, try putting it in DFU mode. Connect it to iTunes, (iTunes may not detect the device, but that's ok) hold the power and home buttons down for 10 seconds, then release the power button but keep holding the home button until it goes into DFU mode. iTunes should detect it and ask for a restore.

  • My iPhone 5 battery died and will no longer turn on. What do I do?

Just got my new iPhone 5 two days ago. My battery died and I tried to charge it for the first time but nothing happens. It won't charge via USB or the wall plug. The only thing that happens is the picture of the phone with the arrow pointing to the battery comes on indicating that the phone needs to be plugged in. What do I do?

For how long did you try to charge the phone? If you've tried charging for hours with nothing happening, I would assume there is a fault with either the Lightning cable or the phone itself (possibly a battery fault) since you get the same whether you connect to the PC or external charger. If you can, make a Genius Bar appointment to have all aspects checked...either that or return to where you purchased the phone and have them check it out and replace it under warranty.
EDIT: Something to try is to verify that the lightning port on the phone (and the cable) is free of any dust/lint/gunk/whatever. Try blowing it out or use a soft brush to disloge/remove any foreign matter that could be stuck in the port.
