APs randomly will not join the controller

Hi all,
In short, APs will join the controller immediately using the recovery image, but once it downloads 7.6.100 and reboots, it either cannot join the controller or will take up to 40 minutes.
The AP is in local mode. The AP 1040 eventually joined the controller, 40 minutes after we deleted all the files off the flash which is unacceptable.

  • LAP not joining the controller

    Gents
I have 1 AP out of ten not joining the controller. I connected the access point to the network and I checked its boot. the access point reaches LWAPP Discovery" and then give me console input. I hard reset the access point and I hard coded an IP address for the AP the AP joins the controller, but when I reset it to assign it to another controller it did not join again.
why the discovery process is not showing the DHCP option 43 configured and DNS for CISCO-LWAPP-CONTROLLER configured on the DNS. All the access point is operating normally except this one. it has many certificate inside, why a hard reset did not work to solve the problem?
    Please advise
    Thanks,

Does the LAP have a valid IP address?
Can the LAP ping the WLC managment IP address?
Console into the LAP and in enable mode, type the command "lwapp ap controller ".

My iPad will not join the iCal at my work after I've been invited. It says it needs more information. What up?

A reset should help. Tap and hold the Home button and the On/Off buttons for approximately 10-15 seconds, until the Apple logo reappears. When the logo appears, release both buttons.

  • LWAPP 1231 does not join the controller

I have LWAPP AIR-AP1231G-A-K9 that was moved from one site to the other one. It has now a different IP address taken from DHCP and its former controller does not exist any more.
I am trying to join it to the same kind of controller which is AIR-WLC4402-12-K9 with  7.0.98.0.
However the AP cannot join the controller, first I got these on the controller
0 Wed Jul 3 14:12:56 2013 AAA Authentication Failure for UserName:0014694b3ab2 User Type: WLAN USER
1 Wed Jul 3 14:12:56 2013 Failed to authorize AP with Base Radio MAC 00:14:69:4b:3a:b2. Authorization entry does not exist in Controller's AP Authorization List.
I added the MAC address of the AP into MAC filtering, and now getting these
AAA Authentication Failure for UserName:0014694b3ab2 User Type: WLAN USER
I am reading several discussions, but they seem to be related to mesh OS mismatch.
My AP is for sure not with mesh OS as it was connected to the controller before the move.
    System image file is "flash:/c1200-k9w8-mx.124-23c.JA/c1200-k9w8-mx.124-23c.JA"
    #sh capwap client config
    swVer                   7.0.98.0
Does anyone know what to do to get the AP joined to the controller ?
I had another AP where I tried to reset the LWAPP config - clear lwapp private-config, but this did not help and this AP is now constantly rebooting without allowing me to login. It looks like the only way how to wake it up would be to convert to autonomous and then back to LWAPP which is something I cannot do as I am too far from it.
    Thanks,
    Vlad

    Hello George,
Many thanks. I have not converted the AP from autonomous to lwapp, it has been lwapp since the very beginning. We just moved this AP from one site where it was successfully joined the controller as lwapp to other site where I am trying to join the same kind of controller with the same OS, same general settings but different IPs.
I do not understand what could happen to the AP as for sure it was just shipped and not touched IT wise.
Anyway, I will try the excersise described in the link above.
    Thanks,
    Vlad

  • AIR-CAP3501I access point not joining the Cisco 2100 Wireless Lan controller.

    Hello All,
I am installing a new LAP (AIR-CAP3501I ) through the wireless lan controller (AIR-WLC2112-K9) with software version 7.0. I have an external ADSL modem which will act as the DHCP server for the wireless clients and the LAP.
Please find my network setup as below:
The ISP ADSL modem , WLC and LAP are connected to a unmanaged POE switch. The LAP gets its power through the POE switch. When i connect the LAP and the WLC to the switch along with the ADSL modem, the LAPs are getting the ip address from the ADSL modem, however they are not joining the WLC for further process.
    ADSL Modem ip address: 192.168.1.254
Management ip address on the LAP: 192.168.1.1 ( Assigned to port 1, untagged Vlan).
Ap Manager ip address: 192.168.1.1 ( Assigned to the same port i.e port1, Untagged Vlan).
The LAP is getting an IP address from the ADSL modem in the range of the DHCP scope.
I will paste the logs very soon.
Please let me know if i am doing anything wrong oe what will be the issue.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mohammed Ameen

The Acess point joins the Controller for 2-3 seconds and then unjoins again. I am not sure what i am doing wrong here. The access points are getting the IPs from the ADSL modem through the switch, then it talks to the WLC, however it does not join the controller for further process.
    Note:
The Managemnet interface and the AP manager interface are assigned to the same port 1 with unassigned Vlan as mention above.

  • 1142LAP not joing the controller after conversion

I have some remote 1142s that I converted to LAP last night.  They are not joing a WLC, but I they are online and I can ping them.  Telnet or SSH is disabled by default (WHY???). What can I do to figure out why these access points are not joining the controller?

How are the APs getting IP address information and controller IP information?
The APs have static IP addresses and should be getting controller IP info through DNS. There is an entry cisco-capwap-controller pointing to one of our WLCs and I can ping it from the switch where the AP is connected. I also have DHCP Option 43 setup should the LAP decide to relase its static IP and get a DHCP IP address.
Your switch ports were probably configured as trunk ports. Have you changed them to access ports?
The switchports were configured trunks. I've since changed one to an access port.
Can the VLAN interface at the remote site ping the management interface of the controller?
Not sure how to do this from the specific VLAN interface at the remote site.  I can ping the management interface from the switch that host the VLAN interfaces.
What's the controller type and code?
    5508  ver 7.3.101.0
Can you console into an AP, reboot it and capture the output and post it on here? I assume this will be a problem since they are remote.
AP is in a remote location. YES THIS IS THE PROBLEM...
I need to get several of these APs converted at several locations.  It's a roll of the dice with ever AP I try to convert.  Theres got to be an easier way that doesn't involve several road trips.

  • AP1242 Not joining 4404 controller

    Hi all
Can anyone please help, my 1242 access points will not join my controller, I have done a debug and can see the Access point sending a discovery request, then the controller says discovery request sent, but then nothing happens, any ideas what this could be? I can ping the AP fine.
    cheers
    Carl

There are a number of things that could cause the join request to not show up.  If there are no other controllers that the AP could be sending its join request to check to make sure there isn't a duplicate IP with your AP manager interface.  Next if you are running LAG make sure the port-channel load-balancing on the switch that the controller is connected to is set to src-dst-ip.

  • 1131 and 1141 APs not finding the controller

We have deployed about 40 of these and about half have found the controller. The others have not. I have used option 43 in the past but lately they were able to find the contrller without that. I also took out the lwapp-controller name out of dns as we have 4 buildings of these etc. Should I put the controller name in dns and what is that default name.
    thanks
    Gary

If the AP's are not on the same subnet as the controller, and you are not using Over the Air Provisioning, then you need to use DHCP Option 43, put your DNS entry back in, or set the controller address manually via the console port on the AP.
The host name for the DNS entry is CISCO-LWAPP-CONTROLLER. If you're adding that entry, then you might want to also add CISCO-CAPWAP-CONTROLLER pointing to the same address. While I believe that all current AP's will try to resolve CISCO-LWAPP-CONTROLLER (even if they are CAPWAP APs), this may not be the case in the future.
We use the DNS feature and then set the AP's appropriate primary/secondary controller after it joins.
Here's a good article about the AP join process:

  • How do i ensure the new access point is joined the controller or not

How do i ensure the new access point is joined the controller or not

To Verifying that Access Points Join the Controller or not there are two ways as below.
Please go through the step by step to find the APs joined state
When replacing a controller, you need to make sure that access points join the new controller.
Using the GUI to Verify that Access Points Join the Controller
Follow these steps to ensure that access points join the new controller.
Step 1 Follow these steps to configure the new controller as a master controller.
    a. Click Controller > Advanced > Master Controller Mode to open the Master Controller Configuration page.
    b. Check the Master Controller Mode check box.
    c. Click Apply to commit your changes.
    d. Click Save Configuration to save your changes.
Step 2 (Optional) Flush the ARP and MAC address tables within the network infrastructure. Ask your network administrator for more information about this step.
Step 3 Restart the access points.
Step 4 Once all the access points have joined the new controller, configure the controller not to be a master controller by unchecking the Master Controller Mode check box on the Master Controller Configuration page.
Using the CLI to Verify that Access Points Join the Controller
Follow these steps to ensure that access points join the new controller.
Step 1 To configure the new controller as a master controller, enter this command:
    config network master-base enable
Step 2 (Optional) Flush the ARP and MAC address tables within the network infrastructure. Ask your network administrator for more information about this step.
Step 3 Restart the access points.

  • TS1398 I have just purchased an iPad mini and it will not join my wifi. It detects my wifi network but will not join. I have a Mac, 2 iPhones and an iPad 4 and all work perfectly. The new iPad mini just won't behave. Any ideas?

I have purchased an iPad mini and it will not join my wifi network. Any ideas?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

  • I have 2  iPads both the sane except for case color. One connects to my home wifi fine, the other will not "join". It finds the wifi name and the little circle turning wheel just spins.

I have 2  iPads both the sane except for case color. One connects to my home wifi fine, the other will not "join". It finds the wifi name and the little circle turning wheel just spins. I have tried about ten different "fixes" none work.. Reboot, forget wifi, etc.
Unplugged wifi on and on for about an hour.
I have compared settings between the two and cannot see any difference.
Both iPads worked fine last week. One made a trip to MI  and used cellular access just fine. Now that one still uses cellular OK, but refuses to "join" the wifi.
    Too bad I can't attach a picture.
Anyone care to offer a unique workable solution I have not tried?
    Thanks

Have you tried renewing the lease in the WiFi settings? Settings>WiFi>Your network name>Tap the blue arrow>Renew Lease. If you haven't tried that - try it first before reading the information about restoring the iOS software.
Follow the instructions in here. If you are unsure about anything - do not proceed. Post back with questions first.
iTunes: Restoring iOS software - Apple - Support
Make sure that you transfer all purchases, backup the iPad and sync with iTunes first. When you restore to factory settings, iTunes should ask if you want to backup first, but it will not hurt to initiate a backup on your won before you even start the restore process.

  • AP is unable to associate. The Regulatory Domain '-E' configured on interface '802.11a' does not match the Controller Regulatory Domain '-C'

    Hi,
There are three different types of APs associated with controller and working fine.
    1.       AIR-LAP1252AG-E-K9
    2.       AIR-LAP1522AG-E-K9
    3.       AIR-CAP1552E-C-K9
WLC is AIR-CT5508-K9. Software version is 7.4.100.0. Field Recovery Image is 7.0.112.21. Firmware version is FPGA 1.7, Env 1.8, USB console 2.2. WCS is 7.0.240.0 for Windows.
WCS is sending alarms for AIR-LAP1522AG-E-K9:
Message: AP is unable to associate. The Regulatory Domain '-E' configured on interface '802.11a' does not match the Controller Regulatory Domain '-C'.
Before Controller was 7.2.4 (not sure).
Country configured on WLC is AE and shows -CE regulatory domain. Mesh APs are also associated.
I believe this Critical alarm should not come.
how much is this alarm important? What should be done to resolve this?

Typically you still need to make sure that the country codes are indeed configured on the WLC. Thing can change when you upgrade code as standards might of changed and regulations also. If your AP's are functional, then you should be okay and I wouldn't worry too much about it, but if after the upgrade, the WLC complains about country code stuff, then you just need to verify that the AP's country code is defined on the WLC. May times the AP will not join and if it does join, the radios might be disabled or in a down status.

  • Cisco 3502 AP will not join 4402

Have 5 WLC 4402's in my network.  I upgraded one of them to 7.0.98.0 to test the new 3502 APs.  When I go to join the new 3502 it will not join to the upgraded WLC.  Keep in mind all WLC's are in the same mobility group.  Does it matter that the rest of the controllers are not on 7.0 code?
    thanks
    izzy

AP3500 requires a minimum of 7.0.98.0.  So my question is:  When  you console into the AP and reboot the AP (all in that order), can you please post everything?
