• Cannot Extract Embedded Font in PDF Report Generated Using Crystal Reports XI

The issue is that sometimes the PDF reports generated by Crystal Report XI are not showing the fonts properly. Arial font is used in the Crystal report template(.rpt file) for field label and data elements. When the report is opened in Adobe Reader, it displays the message - "Cannot extract the embedded font 'AAAAAA+ArialBold'. some characters may not display or print correctly." Other PDF Readers like Foxit show blank spaces instead. I tried to change the font to Courier New, Times New Roman etc but still getting the same message.
The issue is consistent when the application is deployed in Windows server. When deployed in Unix server the issue happens very occasionally. The font files are available and installed in the UNIX box.
Please tell me why this error message is shown and also tell me how to get it fixed.

Hi Scot
Just replied to your email re. conf call.
In the meantime.
1st question.
Some of our developers are creating the reports under crystal 2008, while some are 2011.
Could this be a problem, when they are run by the SDK?
Should we upgrade all our developers to crystal 2011?
The version of CR a report is created in should not matter at all. I am 100% certain this is not the issue.
2nd question
When the report is run, to create the pdf... why would it actually embed the font on the pdf?
if they weren't embedded.. wouldn't it just pull up the proper font, if the user's pc had that font on their
pc?
if it does the common fonts aren't embedded, we would just have to worry about the things like
barcode 3 of 9
I can not answer this as that essentially is the way the product is designed. It may look like a limitation, but there are no work-arounds and I would not consider this to be a bug. Perhaps an enhancement, but a pretty faint hope there. And even if, enhancements take very, very low priority and take long, long time before implementation.
3rd question
Would the fonts, just need to be installed on the server? we've seen some indication, that they
also need to be in a java sub-directory
The fonts must be on the server as that is where the report engine does it's work, then the report is streamed to the user's browser. E.g.; there is no work done on the browser. Also, the process must have rights to access the fonts.
One last point. You mention deployment to Linux. Linux is not supported. Please see: SAP Crystal Reports, Developer Version for Microsoft Visual Studio - Supported Platforms
I suspect this is more an issue with CR not working with the framework for Linux.

• Link to report an issue with Podcast update

Someone posted a link so we could report an issue with the Podcast app the last time there were issues with an upgrade.
I sync with my laptop iTunes. Since this latest update to the app, when I delete a podcast in iTunes on my laptop it will not delete on my i devices during a sync with my laptop. It just grays them out and leaves them on my device. It looks like I can manually delete them, but when you click the edit function to delete them, they are no longer grayed out, so you can't tell which to delete and which to keep.
I don't do anything with the cloud, because I have limited wifi service and do most of my updating at a free wifi hotspot.
If someone has that online link on where to report issues, I would appreciate you posting it again and this time I will save it.

• Oracle Apps RDF Report generates file with ^M (Carriage return) characters

We are upgrading from 11i to r12 (also moving from HP unix to AIX on hardware side) and this rdf report generates a text file which is then eventually sent to a third party system for printing. Report works just fine in 11i as it generates a file without any ^M chars but in R12 environment, the same report generates file with ^M chars.
Also want to understand how the Oracle Apps system hands over the output files to O/S which is saved.
Pls advice
Thanks
Ram M.

What type of concurrent program are we talk about here?
This is a Report type of Concurrent program
How does the text file get generated?
Report is generating a Text file on :desname, a custom folder.
Was the binary mode used to copy the files from the old server to the new one?
I believe RDF Reports were copied over in Binary format but none of the text files generated from old server are copied over.

In ALM11 Analysis View I added a report to generate a Word Document from testcases I desigend in TestPlan.
However if the testcase contains a Call to Test to a template test, I get an error message.
"Unexpected server error occured during Report generation (Task Id - 16292) Contact your system administrator for more information"
When I remove the test with the Call to Test the report generates fine.

As you said, the error simply says that it can't find the file, which most likely means that the file wasn't created.
My guess would be this - you're creating the graph in the subVIs with the + and control icons (which is presumably PDF_Generator.Writer.AddImage.vi) and the VI which is shown in the image never has its FP displayed.
By default, LV removes the FP of all the VIs going into the EXE unless it decides it's going to need the FP. If the FP is removed then the image of the control cannot be accessed and that would presumably prevent the file from being created. The easiest way to confirm this is to create a static property node for one of the controls on the front panel. This will force LV to keep the FP when building the EXE.
If that doesn't help, then you need to see exactly where the BMP file is supposed to be generated and see if you can log an error from there.
Try to take over the world!

• PDF report generation fails with v7.01

I have software that generates a PDF report. I upgraded FireFox to v7.01 and I now get an error that the printer is not activated even though I am saving the report to a disc file and not printing it. Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.

I just received instructions from the TMG software company to uninstall and install the PDF driver they use. This fixed the problem. Apparently upgrading to v7.01 damages the driver but reinstalling it corrects the problem.
Thanks for the advice.

• Save NI report generator files with new names

I was trying to save labview library files under new names so that I could adapt the code but the 'Save As' option is greyed out. In certain cases, when I try to copy and paste the code, I get broken wires and cannot get the VI's to work.
I have been using the report generator toolkit which is quite limited. I was trying to delete a row from an spreasheet but there is no function to do this. So, one workaround that was suggested to me was to use the 'Excel Insert Cells' VI and change the code to instruct it to 'clear' cells rather than 'insert' them. This works, but I wanted to save a copy of the amended file under a different name so that it was independent of the installed library files but I can't seem to do this. I tried to copy out the code but got broken wires even though I have been able to do this in other instances.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Will

Hi Will,
I had the same problem with a project and found the following workaround:
To ensure the original function of any library VI, it's not recommended to just change the VI to do something else.
Therefore I expanded the VI to do both, the original functionality and the special function I needed.
I made an extra Input to the VI, which is a boolean Input.
With that extra optional Input I can now choose the function I want to do.
I made the "False" case to be default. This case works like the original function.
The "True" case is built to do my special function.
This workaround is quite easy and not dangerous. For all projects, which would use the function in their normal use case it's working just as if the file was unchanged.
And for projects using special functionality I can add a "True" constant to my VI Input and the function works as I want..
Hope this workaround helps to fix your problem!
Kind regards

• Issues with Arabic in Mac OS X with Flash 10 / Flex Gumbo

I've been looking at converting an existing Flex 3 project to have an Arabic language version, so I have been looking at the TLF to help do that. Originally I intended to just use the components for using TLF in 3.2, but it looks like I may need to use Gumbo for font embedding.
I'm using the TextFlow to create an editable input box and so far I've run into a number of odd behaviours; can anyone explain where I might be going wrong, or an easy workaround?
This is the code I've been playing with as a test:

private static const textInput:XML = <TextFlow xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/textLayout/2008">

اتحاد الصحفيين العرب يدينس

\u064A\u0648\u0644\u062F \u062C\u0645\u064A\u0639 \u0627

</TextFlow>;
[Embed(source="./fonts/AdobeArabic-Regular.otf", fontName="Adobe Arabic", cff="true")]
private var arabicFont:Class;
private function initApp():void
var textFlow:TextFlow = TextFilter.importToFlow(textInput, TextFilter.TEXT_LAYOUT_FORMAT);
textFlow.direction = Direction.RTL;
var cf:CharacterFormat = new CharacterFormat(textFlow.characterFormat);
cf.locale = 'ar';
cf.ligatureLevel = LigatureLevel.EXOTIC;
cf.fontFamily = "Adobe Arabic";
cf.fontLookup = FontLookup.EMBEDDED_CFF;
textFlow.characterFormat = cf;
var sprite:UIComponent = new UIComponent();
sprite.x = 20;
sprite.y = 20;
sprite.width = 200;
sprite.height = 100;
var controller:IContainerController = new DisplayObjectContainerController(sprite, 200, 100);
textFlow.flowComposer.addController(controller);
textFlow.interactionManager = new EditManager();
textFlow.flowComposer.updateAllContainers();
addChild(sprite);

I've found I've had to use the cff embedding to have the font showing correctly and also not garbling the characters. However, even with cff embedding on, I've found that Mac OS X keyboard inputs come out as garbled roman characters rather than Arabic.I'm sure there are examples of Arabic working in OS X though - is there something particular about how I'm setting up the TextFlow that could be causing this problem?
Thanks in advance for any responses.

Euan,
This is a known issue listed in the release notes. Copied from the release notes:
[Limitations on Keyboard Input of International Scripts: Some international scripts using Unicode encoding cannot be typed into Flash Player 10 on Macintosh OS or Windows. While all writing scripts supported by Flash Player 10 can be displayed correctly, keyboard input for some of these scripts may not function. Keyboard input will work correctly for several writing scripts including Roman, Chinese, Japanese, Cyrillic, and Central European languages on both Windows and Macintosh. On the Windows platform, typing works correctly only for writing scripts such as Arabic, Hebrew or Thai that have Windows codepages.]

• Oracle Report Server Issue with Japanese Characters

We are trying to setup a Oracle Report Server to print the Japanese characters in the PDF format.
We have separate Oracle Report servers for printing English, Chinese and Vietnamese characters in PDF formats using Oracle Reports in the production which are running properly with Unix AIX version 5.3. Now we have a requirement to print the Japanese characters. Hence we tried to setup the new server for the same and the configurations are done as same as Chinese/Vietnamese report servers. But we are not able to print the Japanese characters.
I am providing the details which we followed to configure this new server.
1. We have modified the reports.sh to map the proper NLS_LANG (JAPANESE_AMERICA.UTF8) and other Admin folder settings.
2. We have configured the new report server via OPMN admin.
3. We have copied the arialuni.ttf to Printers folder and we have converted this same .ttf file in AFM format. This AFM file has been copied to $ORACLE_HOME/guicommon/gk/JP_Admin/AFM folder.
4. We have modified the uifont.ali (JP_admin folder) file for font subsetting.
5. We have put an entry in JP_admin/PPD/datap462.ppd as *Font ArialUnicodeMS: Standard "(Version 1.01)" Standard ROM
6. We have modified the Tk2Motif.rgb (JP_admin folder) file for character set mapping (Tk2Motif*fontMapCs: iso8859-1=UTF8) as we have enabled this one for other report servers as well.
Environment Details:-
Unix AIX version : 5300-07-05-0831
Oracle Version : 10.1.0.4.2
NLS_LANG : JAPANESE_AMERICA.UTF8
Font Mapping : Font Sub Setting in uifont.ali
Font Used for Printing : arialuni.ttf (Font Name : Arial Unicode MS)
The error thrown in the rwEng trace (rwEng-0.trc) file is as below
[2011/9/7 8:11:4:488] Error 50103 (C Engine): 20:11:04 ERR REP-3000: Internal error starting Oracle Toolkit.
The error thrown when trying to execute the reports is…
REP-0177: Error while running in remote server
Engine rwEng-0 crashed, job Id: 67
Our investigations and findings…
1. We disabled the entry Tk2Motif*fontMapCs: iso8859-1=UTF8 in Tk2Motif.rgb then started the server. We found that no error is thrown in the rwEng trace file and we are able to print the report also in PDF format… (Please see the attached japarial.pdf for your verification) but we are able to see only junk characters. We verified the document settings in the PDF file for ensuring the font sub set. We are able to see the font sub setting is used.
2. If we enable the above entry then the rwEng trace throwing the above error (oracle toolkit error) and reports engine is crashed.
It will be a great help from you if you can assist us to resolve this issue…

Maybe 7zip or another tool has workarounds for broken file names, you could try that.
Or you could try to go over the files in the zip archive one-by-one and write it to files out-1, out-2, ..., out-$n without concerning yourself with the file names. You could get file endings back via the mimetype.
This script might work:
#include <stdio.h>
#include <zip.h>
static const char *template = "./out-%04d.bin";
int main(int argc, char**argv)
int err = 0;
zip_t *arc = zip_open((const char*)argv[1], ZIP_RDONLY, &err);
if(arc == NULL)
printf("Failed to open ZIP, error %d\n", err);
return -1;
zip_int64_t n = zip_get_num_entries(arc, 0);
printf("%s: # of packed files: %d\n", argv[1], n);
for(int i = 0; i < n; i++)
zip_stat_t stat;
zip_stat_index(arc, i, ZIP_FL_UNCHANGED, &stat);
char buf[stat.size];
char oname[sizeof(template)];
zip_file_t *f = zip_fopen_index(arc, (zip_int64_t)i, ZIP_FL_UNCHANGED);
zip_fread(f, (void*)&buf[0], stat.size);
snprintf(&oname[0], sizeof(template), template, i);
FILE *of = fopen(oname, "wb");
fwrite(&buf[0], stat.size, 1, of);
printf("%s: %s => %lu bytes\n", argv[1], oname, stat.size);
zip_fclose(f);
fclose(of);
zip_close(arc);
return 0;
Compile with
gcc -std=gnu99 -O3 -o unzip unzip.c -lzip
and run as
./unzip $funnyzipfile
You should get template-named, numbered output files in the current directory.
