Arabic script

Hi. I am making commerical documents which need to use both English and Arabic in the same documents. Does InDesign have any settings that allow for it? I have read about InDesign ME but that is not the version I have, and have also read about something called World Ready Composer which I simply cannot find. Without changing the whole system to the Middle Eastern version is there anything I can do?

Nope - CS6 does not expose the RTL text manipulation tools. The script that Manish points out does expose the World-Ready Composer, but none of the stuff that is totally critical for RTL work (paragraph direction, character direction, digits, etc.) is available to users of the non-ME Creative Suite. The WRC exposed by that script will let you do Indic scripts which flow LTR.
As usual, the options boil down to: Buying the ME edition, buying World Tools, or using scripts. Frankly, using the scripts won't do much for you beyond just getting the text to compose with RTL flow. Actual typesetting in Arabic -  specifying numerals, hanging indents, control of diacriticals, kashidas, et cetera - would be pretty much impossible with scripting alone, unless you are expert in both Arabic typesetting and in InDesign scripting. The only real solutions for multilingual typesetting are still the ME edition and World Tools. And, if you want to do significant work that is not in Arabic, or Hebrew or Farsi or Urdu or Pashto or etc., then World Tools is the best option by far.
BTW, that "Indic Preferences" script is hilarious. I only spent a few minutes digging but it looks like all it does is: add Indic languages to the language dropdown, set default units to millimeters, expose the WRC (hooray!) and set the default language to English: UK. This is all contained within
app.setApplicationPreferences(LanguageAndRegion.indic);
but I was only able to find that LanguageAndRegion exists, not what else .indic might carry along with it.

  • Having trouble saving text from Arabic-script PDFs

    I have several PDFs created using different versions of the PDF format with text that uses the Arabic script (i.e. Arabic, Farsi, etc.) All I need is to save the text properly into something like a Unicode text file, an RTF or a DOC file, or something similar. I use Adobe Acrobat Std ver 7 and often get error messages or the text that is saved is corrupted. What components/fonts/software/etc do I need to install on my machine to do this properly? While the operation that I need - "Save as ..." - is pretty basic, the variety of PDF documents I have is pretty wide in terms of when and how they were created, what languages they contain etc. Thanks!

    Bil,
    Thanks for the info. I actually did observe exactly that in a couple of cases, i.e. "copy & paste" worked when "save as" did not. Do you know what is fundamentally different between these two operations? Also, if I am willing to lose all formatting and just get pure text (I am thinking of "pure text" as a UTF8 or UTF16 byte stream), does this make my life any easier? Finally, how can I find out which font I have problems with when I "save as" and get garbage? E.g. if I open the PDF file in a text editor, where is the detailed font info?

  • When I print a document with Arabic script in In Design the characters appear in an inverted form, in the opposite direction, while the printer doesn't do this with other software such as Word

    When I print a document with Arabic script in In Design the characters appear in an inverted form, in the opposite direction, while the printer doesn't do this with other software such as Word

    (The small field at the top of questions is to type just a title; the large field is to type your full question in, along with anything else that may help us help you.)
    When you say "print", do you mean the text is correct in your InDesign file? If you export the document to a PDF, is it still correct? Final test: if you print the PDF to your printer (making sure you use the same driver and setting), is it wrong? Then it's your printer driver, trying to be smart when it should not. Locate a Settings dialog where you can switch off options such as this one. Were I a betting person, I'd tell you to look for something called "Auto-correct mirrored documents".

  • Copy and pasting Arabic script

    Hi there..
    I have a pdf file which contains Arabic script. When I copy and paste the Arabic script I get boxes with alien faces in them.
    the file can be found here

    Any help will be much much appreciated
    Thanks

    pdf cannot be relied upon for copy/paste (and various other things) when using Arabic and various other scripts because of the different encoding systems used depending on how it was produced. The only thing you can do is try different readers (e.g. Adobe Reader instead of Preview) and different recipient apps -- or try to get the text in some other more reliable format (.doc, .rtf, .txt, .html, etc).

  • Arabic script integration into UPK simulations

    A few questions on whether Arabic text integration/import* is possible in UPK:
    1. Does UPK allow integration of text in languages that it does not provide translation support for, such as Arabic?
    2. How can Arabic text integration into the Show Me, Try Me, Test Me scripts be performed?
    a. Is this a manual process, where the text will need to be copied and pasted into individual callouts/text boxes?
    b. Is it automated in UPK? If yes, what are the steps to import a translated Show Me job aid in Arabic into the simulation?
    3. What additional character/font plug-ins would be required for this? If yes, where are these plug-ins available?
    4. Any specific formatting/publishing requirements to be kept in mind for getting the best possible player and job aid output in Arabic?
    Edited by: 857307 on May 8, 2011 1:15 AM

    Hello,
    Please contact Support to ensure you get the most accurate and up to date information. http://support.oracle.com/
    1. Yes, UPK supports languages other than the 21 languages provided with the software. Arabic has not been tested with the current release of UPK.
    2. I'm not aware of any known issues with Arabic and bubble text.
    a. Since we've not done testing with Arabic, I do not know of any issues with typing directly in the bubble.
    b. I do not know of any reason why the localization tools in UPK would not work. (Template Editor, Export for Localization, Re-Record topic)
    3. Arabic has not been tested, so I cannot comment on font or character requirements or best practices.
    4. Same as previous.
    Best regards,
    Marc

  • DARI (Arabic) script does not work in WORD 2004

    When I change to AFGHAN DARI in MS WORD I can type the characters (although as other discussions have shown KEYBOARD viewer does not work) BUT they are not joined properly in the words.
    i.e. the same form of the character is used whether it is at the start, middle or end of the word. PATHETIC - how would you like to write all English in UPPERCASE??
    MS WORD does the correct thing on Windows XP
    Does anyone have any ideas - apart from throwing this new MacBook away?
    Any Word processors for the MAC that work properly?
    Please HELP!!

    Does anyone have any ideas - apart from throwing this new MacBook away?
    Yes, throw Word away. MS Office for Mac has no support for Arabic, Hebrew, Devanagari, etc.
    All other word processors (except Appleworks) have better support for Arabic than Word does. Mellel is the best. See this note:

  • Word 2008 Arabic script - not connected or reversed direction?

    Hi - we have upgraded to Word 2008. My wife is studying Arabic. Now any typing in word does not connect the letters nor go in reverse direction. Have set the Keyboard to Arabic QWERTY. Also, when copy and pasting Arabic translations (eg from Google) they the paste looses character connections and order reverses. Pasting into MAIL comes out OK.
    Do I need to specially import a font for Word? 2004 was OK.

    Do I need to specially import a font for Word? 2004 was OK.
    You are mistaken, MS Word for Mac has never supported Arabic. Only the Windows version can do it. You need to use another app. TextEdit that comes with OS X works, Mellel is the best.

  • JTextField and Farsi or Arabic fonts.

    Hi,
    I am trying to use Arabic or Farsi fonts for JTextField but it displays unreadable character or boxes. The program is using Ms Access is working with English fonts perfectley (The Farsi fonts like B Homa or...does not work even without using Ms Access). Here is the code, please help; thanks in advance.
    Font font1 = new Font("Lucida Sans", Font.PLAIN, 12);
    fnametxt.setFont(font1);
    fnametxt.setText(text1);

    I don't know where is the problem, when you are typing or when you whant to display and retrive it from file or db.
    Anyway, as I know for multilanguage application you should use fonts that supports all language scripts that is applied in the app.
    One way to find out what scripts is supported by fonts is goto Format in Notepad and select a font, on the dialog box there is a combo that displays all sopprted language script by the font.
    For farsi language you shuld be sure that the font supports Arabic scripts like Tahoma and Arial.

  • How can put Arabic Language in my website?

    Hi,
    I am created a website in english language, i wanted to convert that website to arabic language. how can embeded arabic font in my website with CSS.
    because after uploading web page come some sybol instead of my text please help me

    Hello Mano(?),
    as you can see, my approach allows two different character encodings on my website.
    On the other hand I would like to focus on a wider issue:
    You can specify the font set that uses the site. In the case of Arabic, you have two options, first is Unicode (UTF-8 or UTF-16) or you use the Arabic script looking set iso-8859-7 (or -6). See: http://www.w3.org/International/O-charset-lang.html.
    It can be a problem with UTF-8 and UTF-16. UTF-8 requires 8 bits per character, then so are 256 different possible characters and so it could be it's not enough for Arabic. UTF-16 occupies two bytes for each character and so we have 65536 different possible characters.
    If you apply the Arabic script set correctly, IE will prompt the visitor to install the appropriate language pack (I'm sure, not all users install this language pack.)
    If you have bad luck, your provider messed up these your server settings. So, you have to go in consultation with your provider!
    The ability to specify the direction of each tag in the CSS, e.g.:
    p {
        font-family: "Arabic Transparent";
        direction: 'rtl';
    I really think that this way would be extremely difficult.
    The best way in my opinion is - as I said before - use a simple simple text editor.
    Hans-G.

  • Urgently in need of converting arabic PDF to word

    Does the latest adobe professional pdf reader recognise arabic script for conversion? A question has been answered related to this from 2012 but its 2015 now so wondering if there has been any progress in that regard. Thanks. If someone who's adobe-educated could please answer my question.

    Adobe Acrobat Reader DC can only convert PDF files using the ExportPDF service.
    Acrobat DC can convert PDF files by itself.
    I have just downloaded a random PDF containing Arabic text: http://www.learnarabiconline.com/Beginners_Guide_To_Arabic.pdf
    then used Acrobat DC to convert it to Word: seemed to work perfectly well.
    Anyway, you can use the fully functional 30-days trial to test if it works for you.

  • Arabic diacritics positioning in InDesign

    How can I position the Arabic diacritic (Kasra) below the character? At the moment the Diacritic automatically positions itself above the character by default, Some Arabic scripts use this particular diacritic below the character.
    Is there a way to change this using InDesign without having to manually move each instance of the character using the diacritics positioning panel?
    Regards
    Saj

    Can't say that I've ever noticed this myself. What language is the text marked as? What language is it? What font? If it's script-dependent and the font is well-designed, then you should be able to select the text, change the language, and have the kasra change position. But I thought that kasra positioning was conditional. (I can't read any langage that uses the script, beyond the basi 100 words, for what it's worth.)
    Are you keying this yourself? Someone who e.g. knew how to key only the fatha might use it in place of the kasra, for example. I have worked with many translators who were great writers but terrible typists, if you know what I mean, and who used any number of terrible workarounds to account for their lack of facility keying Arabic into their word processors.

  • Arabic localization for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

    Arabic localization was provided by "Arab Business Machine Ltd. VAD Middle-East". However latest version available is for Mac OS X 10.5.6 Leopard, as you know that's an old version of Leopard and there is no Snow Leopard localization until now.
    The file list is available here ( http://www.appleme.ae/ara/support/arabicreleases/index.htm ) however you need to register (it's free).
    Since Arab Business Machine Ltd is busy, I figure that the only solution is to do the localization yourself. So is there any tool we can use to create a "localization profile"?
    If you have tips on improving Arabic usage in Snow Leopard that is also appreciated!
    Semi offtopic: iLife Arabic localization is only available for outdated iLife 08 and iWork 08 software as well. Arabic manuals are for late 2008 macbooks, 2007 iMacs.. but I just mentioned them because they were on the same page.

    We are using some Arabic fonts in our customize report. The Arabic script is comming perfectly in request output. But while taking print by selecting printer from oracle print option, printer is printing JUNK characters instead of Arabic characters.
    Tried printing the report output from operating system print command, it is printing Arabic font. But while

    The only change we have done is older printer was SEDCO Ultima74+. But it was replaced recently with new printer EpsonLQ-590.
    Any help in this regards,

    Kashif,
    Can you print the report successfully using FNDPSTAX -- See (Note: 297522.1 - How to investigate printing issues and work towards its resolution ?) for details.
    I would also suggest you run "Pasta Printing Setup Test" and see if it returns any errors -- See (Note: 264118.1 - 11i : Pasta Pasta Printing Setup Test).
