ARC-to-PSE8 Question

I've been away from PSE8 for too long. After I edit an  image in Adobe Raw Coverter (hosted by Bridge) & save it in a format of my choice, how do I send that image to PSE from Bridge?
THank you!

Duh .... I figured it out. Control-click (on a Mac) & select Open With PSE. Hope I can remember this when I'm sober.

  • Bridge to PSE8 Question

I think that I am missing something really obvious here. I edited an  old JPEG in ACR (Bridge version) & saved it. I then opened the image  in PSE8. However, none of the edits that I did in ACR were transferred  to PSE8. In other words, the image that opens in PSE8 appears to be the  unedited JPEG.
Maybe this is relevant: I retrieved the original old JPEG from the  iPhoto library using Bridge. However, when I use Bridge to retrieve an  image from my home directory folder, I don't have the above problem. Is  this a problem with retrieving images from iPhoto?
I would appreciate your help. Thank you.

A rather short perhaps simple answer is this; were you to edit with PSE, then use the "Save as" command, you would be prompted to "Save in a Version Set". If you choose "yes", then PSE basically imports the image and displays it on top of the original.
When you work outside of PSE itself, it doesn't know of the image's existence, it's not imported into the organizer, hence the results you've observed. The exception to this would be if the folder you save your photo in is a "watch folder", PSE would then make you aware of the photo and prompt you to import it. However, it wouldn't be saved as a version set, but rather it would (I think) be shown as its own import "batch".
Whenever you work outside the organizer (with another imaging program, Windows, or even PSCS), PSE is oblivious to any new photos. You would actually have to either import such a photo, or open it directly with the PSE Editor to force PSE to deal with it directly.
The minimal exception here is if you install PSCS over top of an already existing PSE installation. When installed thus, PSCS automatically ingratiates itself into PSE via the editing options pallette. Now, you still have to open from the PSE Organizer, then save to the PSE Organizer to to achieve the results you're looking for. The only difference is you now have the option of the PSCS or PSE Editors, depending on your mood or necessity.
These are the results of my own installation of PSE-7 and PSCS-4. As always my disclaimer, "your results may vary".

  • Reinstalling PSE8 over PSE8 Questions

my PSE8 will not open (crash report upon organizer first screen). Can I merely reinstall over PSE8? I'm most concerned with my several thousand files and esp. the associated tags. So far as I can recollect, I've used the program recently, and have not installed any new programs.
I tried to have the program reset the preferences, but it doesn't get that far. It ignores the pse.old file but doesn't create a new.prf file.

    Try deleting/renaming the following folders:-
    1) Elements Organizer
    2) Online Services
These folder are present at C:\Users\<current user>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe on Win7/Vista machines.
Also check for the write permission as you are saying that new file is not created on launching the organizer. Otherwise run PSE as administrator and then see if the application runs fine.

  • PSE8 question: PSE opens my files but Bridge does not

I downloaded an update to PSE8 that allows PSE to read the files from my Sony Alpha A550. PSE is happy with the A550 but Bridge can only import the files, cannot read them. It shows a generic thumbnail for them and will not open Camera Raw. What can be done?

Good idea. Bridge will import the Sony A550 photos but not convert them to dng. But PSE8 saves the day by converting them and then Bridge will accept the conversions and display the thumbnails and open in Camera Raw. Cool.
I still have to figure out what happens to images from my Sigma SD14. Yes, I know, too many cameras. Bridge will accept the photos directly but the images have problems like terminal overexposure and banding, that were not apparent in the histograms.

  • Upgrade from PSE8 question

Im thinking of upgrading to CS5.My question is how do I move my filters like topaz and NIK color efex from PSE to CS5, or do I have to reinstall both.

Time was you could just move .8bf files around, but many modern plug-ins are no longer self-contained in a single file, and may require special registry entries and access that the installer sets up.
Your best bet is to install them again into Photoshop CS5.

  • PSE8 question: Recompose Tool says "Program Error"

And does not recompose. I tried this with an exercise photo from the DVD of Digital Classroom and with a photo of my own. What could be happening?

Select the recompose tool then click the dropdown icon (top left under the blue PSE symbol) and choose reset tool.

  • HT5239 Where can I get Apple FIPS Role guide for user so that I can use the APIs from my application

I am trying to use Apple's FIPS certified crypto library's crypto APIs in my application to do the crypto operations. For that I was asked to refer the "Role Guide : User" in the nist document. But I couldn't find the same. Can I know where I can download the same.

The OS X and iOS programming documentation is the Cryptographic Services Guide, and related manuals.
AFAIK, what you're probably after is the Common Crypto stuff that's part of libSystem.  See man CC_crypto for some introductory details of that, and there's a sample program available.
The devforums.apple.com developer forums and the developer.apple.com web site will be better resources for programming questions than are these ASC forums (and that includes my answer here!), and the Fed-Talk mailing list might be of interest for this question.
Given the usual arc these security questions follow, I'd suggest ignoring what I've posted here and directly contacting the Apple Developer Technical Services (DTS) folks, and ask for formal help with this.  The folks I've worked with over the years that were looking for FIPS 140-2 crypto stuff and similar usually have a requirement for a paperwork trail involved, and that means direct contact with the vendor when you cannot local published formal statements.   Not unofficial stuff from random folks like me posted here in ASC.  (There's an Apple contact on that FIPS page, BTW.)

  • How to set xr2 remote to "volume lock to TV input"?

Prior to having X1 system, the old "silver with red ok button" remote could be programmed with : VOLUME LOCK
Once you program your remote control
for your TV, the volume buttons will control
the volume on your TV, regardless of which
mode the remote is in (AUX, TV, or Cable).
To set your remote to control the volume
of another device, follow the steps below. The above is straight from the "silver with red ok button" remote manual pdf. This was useful because many HT receivers and HDTV pairings over HDMI have ARC (audio return channel).  When that is enabled, as you change TV volume your tv volume indicator will show up on the tv screen so you know what it's doing -- but the TV is actually sending the commands the HT receiver that's sitting in a cabinet where you can't see it (nor can you see the readout on the HT receiver display from 30ft away).  Now that I have the X1 system and XR2 remote, I can't find an option to lock the volume to the TV when I've paired it with an audio system.  Is there a hidden way to lock the volume buttons to the TV?  This isn't a deal breaker - but is very, very nice to have.

The X1 remotes will "pair" the volume control to either the TV or AVR both not both at the same time. It is one or the the other.
Be careful with X1 boxes and ARC. X1 boxes have very questionable HDMI support and ARC has been questionable. I would avoid using ARC with X1 boxes.
Why don't you stop at a Comcast store and pick up an XR5 or XR11 remote? They are much better than the ZR2 and Comcast locations give them away for free.

  • Question Re: installing PSE8

I have Photoshop Elements 5 and will be going to PSE8. I am fairly new at using Photoshop and have a basic question. Will my present pictures and files be transfered automatically from 5 to *? Is there anything I should be careful of or do before I install PSE8 to ensure that nothing will be lost? I would appreciate any response.
    RWA

No, you don't need to worry about anything. Install PSE8 and when you would launch it, it would automatically convert your catalog in PSE5 to PSE8. You won't get any issues.
Please go ahead and install PSE8

  • Very technical question regarding HDMI ARC

Hi all, I'm planning out a HT purchase, and I plan on setting it up like this: Devices (Cable/PS4) -> TV (via HDMI)TV -> 2.1 ch Soundbar (via...) For the TV to Soundbar connection, I could just use an Optical connection, get 2.1ch lossless via Linear PCM and call it a day and be happy. But the HDMI ARC connection has me intreugied, and where my questions come in. 1.) Can I use HDMI ARC even if I NEVER have the TV's input set to the soundbar source (ie. making it a passive upstream audio only and essentially replacing the role of a Toslink Optical connection). 2.) If this even can be done, would I still get the benefit of Controlling the soundbar through my TV remote? (via Control through HDMI 3.) Lastly, would I still get the same S/PDIF, 2.1ch lossless audio LPCM this way? If it matters, the planned purchases are:TV: Sony X850CSoundbar: Sony HT-CT780  I've asked on some technical A/V forums before but no good response to this yet - maybe because my setup plan is an odd one, usually HDMI ARC is there to prevent the need for another cable (like Optical) but if I can get control from HDMI I think its worth investigating. Thanks!

I know it's a lot later but I wanted to give credit where credit is due. I wound up toying with the system myself and it works fine, and what Dimestore said is true.
The ARC protocol is passive in the sense that it's constantly feeding back despite the input of the TV
And honestly, the communication between the Sony devices is great. In fact, the TV itself can read the different inputs through to the soundbar and display them as separate inputs on the TV. It's pretty cool.
Thank you both for your responses!

  • Exclusivity arcs question

    Hello,
I know the following rules are true for arcs in Designer:
    - arcs are nearly always drawn across the many ends of relationships.
    - if one relationship end that is part of the unique identifier is in an arc, then each of the other relationship ends within the arc must also be part of alternative unique identifiers for the entity.
It is rare to have an arc across the 'one' end of a relationship. If so, is it valid for one of the relationships at the 'many' end to be marked as identifying (with the bar across the line) and the other not to be? Or do they need to be the same? [These are the relationship ends not in the arc.]
    Thanks,
    Antony

I think it helps of you clarify your question with 'real life' data. I think you should define subtypes in your master entity (but can only be sure if you clarify the question with an example).

  • PSE8 & Dual Monitor Question

I just connected an external display to my MacBook Pro & have a couple of very remedial questions.
I have the displays set up in the "extended desktop" mode. But when I open an image in ACR, I cannot drag the ACR window to my external display. Can you please help me here?
Also, for those of you using dual displays, I assume a desirable way to set up the 2 screens is to keep the PSE tools on one screen & the image to be edited in the other. I'm curious about how you set up your workspace.
    Thank you very much.

Well, you're using dual monitors the way I've always heard it was to be done.
First unless the monitors are identical, it does seem like quite a logistics issue to have both screens color balanced and calibrated. So, obviously keep the image on the one that "prints best".
For the sake of disucssion, if both displays were very close to identical, I suppose you could use the "clone display" mode as a constant before and after.
My own slightly eccentric self would like to have one monitor vertical, and the other horizontal. This would present both horizontal and vertical images full frame simultaneously. As it stands now, I can get this, but I need two computers to do it.
I seem to be in a minority, as none of the current graphics drivers permit this, without one of the images being sideways that is. Is this too eccentric?

  • Upgrade from PSE8 to Photoshop or CS4: question

I'm confused about something. I have PSE8 for Mac. I would like to get Photoshop. Does this mean I have to get CS4? Is there a standalone Photoshop without all the other Creative Suite things?
Also I can't pay $700. Anyone know of any deals, or bundling with a Wacom tablet? (I'm not affiliated with any educational institution).
    Thank you -

Photoshop CS4 is available as a "stand alone" application. But like was said, you won't find any real good deals like you mentioned, that are legal (as in not pirated).
Actually, it may be possible to find a 'good deal'--not through a normal commercial vendor and I would certainly stay away from eBay/Craig's List/etc. for a purchase of Photoshop CS4.  It is just too easy to get a pirated copy.
I don't know how often it happens but I myself was in the position of having a legal copy of Photoshop CS4 that I no longer needed.  I had PSCS4 on my iMac for quite some time and also had CS4 Design Premium on my PC.  I finally bit the bullet and moved 100% to the Mac so I transferred the CS4DP package to the Mac platform via Adobe which meant I no longer had a need for the stand alone Mac version of Photoshop CS4.
If you have any computer/photography clubs in your area you might check there.  It is possible you may find someone who is no longer using their licensed copy of CS4 who would be willing to go through the Adobe License Transfer process which would enable you to have their copy officially placed in your name.

  • Question on PSE8 actions

When I try to run some of my actions in PSE8 it will instruct me to do some task and then press the "play" button.  I don't know what button this is referring to, I thought maybe it meant the apply button at the bottom of the effects palette, but that doesn't work.  Can someone help me?  Thanks!

Actions you download and install yourself normally get installed and work from the effects pallet in Full Edit.
The pre-installed actions are found in the Organizer by choosing Guided Photo Edit under the Fix tab.
Scroll down and you will see Automated Actions and the Actions Player.

  • Basic ARC Tool question

For drawing arc like shapes, what is the difference with doing this with the Arc tool VS. using the pen tool to draw the same type of shapes? Is it just an easier way to do it? OR is there some other advantage?

Depends on your version. In CS5 you can just select all the open paths you wat to connect and then hit Cmd (or Ctrl) + J
In older version select two anchor points at a time and connect them (or use scripts)
