[Arch 0.7] no sound with snd-intel8x0

It's not like there is no sound to hear, but aplay & xmms simply dont play anything. Xmms (with Alsa) gets stuck at 00:00 and aplay doesnt stop playing (well, i dont actually hear that 'play') a 5 sec wav (so i think it doesnt start playing like xmms). It seems that this is not a problem of muted sound or unplugged speakers (everything works perfectly with windows xp).
using:
linux 2.6.10-arch, devfs (udev didnt work either)
running on a notebook:
Acer Extensa 3002 WLMi (the 'better' version of Acer Travelmate 4002 WLMi)
Intel Pentium M 725 Centrino 1.6GHz
ATI Radeon 9700/64mb Mobility
100GB HDD, 512 MB DDR
built-in speakers (working with windows xp)
I already re-installed arch, tried kernel24 and 2.6.9, jumped in circles and prayed to every single god-like metaphor i've ever heard of ever...

I am really tired of people not being able to figure out how to cleverly compile a kernel...
Your sound card is in your computer, eh ? You do not remove it everyday from your computer, eh ? Then WHY do you compile that as a module ?????
If you want to avoid lots of problems, stop compiling as module what you use everyday and cannot be removed from your computer.
For ex I would compile pcmcia as module but not the soundcard driver for it needs a lot of dependencies(10 modules !!!!).
Here is the way to fix your problem : build your module inside the kernel !!!
Alsa==>PCI==> Intel
and here is the way to configure alsa :
pacman -S alsa-utils
amixer set Master unmute
amixer set PCM unmute
alsamixer
alsactl store
echo "alsactl restore" >> /etc/rc.local
Firstly dude. The standard arch kernel has it as a module because not everyone has this card.
Second dude. People put it as a module because occassionally programs crash, and sometimes if they were using the soundcard, it's locked up requiring a reboot. Removing and reloading the module fixes this.
Besides, whats the problem with it having lots of dependencies when used as a module? If you compile the driver into the kernel, the deps are compiled in. If you load the driver with modprobe, it autoloads the deps. The deps arent a problem

  • No sound with snd-hda-intel (Realtek ALC260)

    Hello,
I've been trying to make my sound work with no success, i'm basically in the same case as this topic : https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=17347 but hints are references to now dead links.
I've played with modprobe and different settings like :
    alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
    alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
    options snd-hda-intel model=generic
    with no success.
Here some more infos on my system :

    Thanks for your help.

I removed the three lines and rebooted.
I'm not sure what i should test with pavucontrol but there is at least a VUmeter corresponding to a song i'm playing.
    I did a speaker-test again still nothing.

  • [SOLVED] No sound with vmware

I'm getting no sound with vmware, not sure why
Here's what I've been trying to test things:
    $ cat /dev/urandom | aplay
Playing raw data 'stdin' : Unsigned 8 bit, Rate 8000 Hz, Mono
Here's some alsa info, if it helps:
    $ aplay -L
    null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)

  • Sound with i915 chipset [solved]

Ok, so I've got this nifty x41 and am having trouble getting the last 10% working.. including sound.  It seems like my sound is working (when I use aplay it says it plays the sound) but I can't hear anything.  I've tried unmuting all the channels and raising the levels using alsamixer.  I've also tried using the gnome volume control but still can't get any sound.  Trying to aplay a .wav file or play something with xmms gives me no sound.  I went through the wiki and added that funky quirk line into my modprobe.conf but that didn't help either.  Where to go from here?  Is this chipset just not supported in the current alsa and/or kernel?

Well, after a clean install I followed the wiki and sounds works.  Indeed it is the snd-intel8x0 module.  Chalk this one up to: "weird, but I'm glad it works"

  • [SOLVED]No Sound with ALSA - Intel Corporation 82801G HD Audio

    Hey all,
I've succesfully installed Arch Linux. My past two attempts have met with failure, all because of my own failure to read and follow directions correctly. This time everything is installed correctly. I am running Kdemod3 on my laptop with Arch and everything works great. I LOVE Pacman and the simplicity of Arch's configuration files. It's super fast and all together simple. My only remaining problem is this:
My sound with ALSA is not functioning. I followed the installation instructions at the arch wiki and after unmuting all of my channels I still would not get any sound. My sound module is snd_hda_intel and it is detected, loaded and the whole nine yards (as far as I can tell). My user is a member of the 'audio' user group also. I looked at the troubleshooting tips on the bottom of the Wiki but decided not to try them as they do not seem to pertain to my card (snd_hda_intel) but I will try them if anyone would like me to.
If anyone has any ideas, they'd be greatly appreciated!:D Anything I can provide that you need I will be more than willing to provide.
Thanks for such a great distribution,
    Dan

Problem resolved. I ran alsaconf, selected my soundcard, and everything was working from there out. Thanks MisfitI38 on the IRC!!!

  • .../sound/core/snd-page-alloc.ko.gz': No such directory -- [solved]

I lost my sound when I tried loading the manufacturers driver. So I went to the Arch wiki page and followed the steps to set up but this is what I get (Making sure the sound modules are loaded--section).
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ad … figuration
    [joe@Tux-Box ~]$ modprobe snd-hda-intel
WARNING: Could not read '/lib/modules/3.1.8-1-ARCH/kernel/sound/core/snd-page-alloc.ko.gz': No such file or directory
WARNING: Could not read '/lib/modules/3.1.8-1-ARCH/kernel/sound/core/snd.ko.gz': No such file or directory
WARNING: Could not read '/lib/modules/3.1.8-1-ARCH/kernel/sound/core/snd-timer.ko.gz': No such file or directory
WARNING: Could not read '/lib/modules/3.1.8-1-ARCH/kernel/sound/core/snd-pcm.ko.gz': No such file or directory
WARNING: Could not read '/lib/modules/3.1.8-1-ARCH/kernel/sound/core/snd-hwdep.ko.gz': No such file or directory
WARNING: Could not read '/lib/modules/3.1.8-1-ARCH/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-codec.ko.gz': No such file or directory
FATAL: Could not read '/lib/modules/3.1.8-1-ARCH/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-intel.ko.gz': No such file or directory
It looks like the install script wiped out all the previous modules.
I then followed the wiki link to the "Alsa Sound Card Matrix" and selectd hda-intel and ran the command below which based on this sight indicates the module is loaded.
    [joe@Tux-Box ~]$ modinfo soundcore
    filename: /lib/modules/3.1.8-1-ARCH/kernel/sound/soundcore.ko.gz
    alias: char-major-14-*
    license: GPL
    author: Alan Cox
    description: Core sound module
    depends:
vermagic: 3.1.8-1-ARCH SMP preempt mod_unload modversions
    parm: preclaim_oss:int
So at this point I am confused and not sure what to do to correct.
Any direction would be appreciated as the only solution I can think of is to rebuild the system which I don't have the time for currently.
    Some more info....
    [joe@Tux-Box ~]$ lspci | grep Audio
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) (rev 40) --- On Board audio which I have been using.

Thanks in advance for your direction

I seem to be having the same problem playing HDMI audio.  Do you happen to remember how you got this resolved?
For any interested parties, my alsa mixer screen looks something like this as well:

Audio works fine through the Realtek chip (HDA ATI SB card). Just not through HDMI.

I keep saying this over and over, in the hope that people who do a search will find it.  Apple cannot possibly test for or be reponsible for the bazillion combinations of adapter, cables, and TV's out there.  The only monitors that are 100% guaranteed to work with the MacBook Pro are the Cinema Displays and Thunderbolt Displays, because, they're made by Apple.  They're expensive, but they work perfectly.
My guess is that you bought a cheap MDP to HDMI cable, or have a defective one.  From my reading of these boards over the past few months, cheap cables have a high failure rate.  And the regular priced ones have only a slightly less of one.  Try a new one.  Make sure you do not damage the Thunderbolt port.

My iPad does not have sound when on the Internet, including YouTube, but does have sound with iTunes and other apps.  How can I correct this?

If you are sure that you have sound in other apps - and if you can still hear keyboard clicks and get notifications, then system sounds are not muted. Try this and see if it works.
Close all apps completely and reboot the iPad.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • [SOLVED] No sound (with flash)

    Hello.
I have no sound with flash. It does work elsewhere.
    I am using ALSA.
My flash should output audio correctly according to wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fl … d_in_Flash
    # aplay -l

EDIT: I'm retarded. I didn't add my user to audio group. And sound elsewhere was from speaker-test which needs SU.

Orrrr it's because the flash plugin uses OSS.
run `aoss firefox` and be happy.
OSS does still work or at least the alsa backwards compatibility layer that emulates the old interfaces, right? did i miss anything?
for newer versions of flash (like version 9) simply install firefox in wine and let it install the plugin. that usually works great!

  • NO SOUND with iMAC 24 - Please help

I have tried everything.........searched for drivers, everything, installed boot camp drivers from the CD numerous times.........I can't get rid of the ?pci device that shows up in the device manager. I am using windows xp sp3. The ? still shows up in the device list and I have no sound............everything else is perfect and great, but can't get sound!!!!!!!! I tried to update driver from realtek and sigmatel from the location on the hard drive and CD and no help. I DLed new drivers from realtek, no help..............does anyone know??????????

For those that are interested, this DOES work, as I have just tried this using SP3...........this is from another forum:
    http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=490
Basicly, download the file at the bottom of the page, unzip, go to Device Manager, right click the yellow (?) PCI driver, mark to select your own location and direct it to where you unzipped your file. That's it. UAA driver should be found and you should be able to hear sound.
If not yet, try now to re-install your audio drivers, and it should work. (if on mac, that means re-install boot camp drivers).
When doing the above, if it asks about a missing file, then point to where you just unzipped everything, it should be there, as it was for me. And, finally, in device manager, I still had one more issue for "audio device on high definition BUS" AFTER i corrected the PCI. To fix this, in device manager, I simply selected UPDATE DRIVER and use the MAC CD (or BOOTCAMP) and reinstalled the drivers and all worked fine after...................
I now have sound with my IMAC 24in and Windows XP SP3 (yes, i don't want to use much of XP at all, but it's nice to have............
Enjoy and let me know if this works or if you have issues, I would love to actually try and help...........

  • No Mic Sound with Pulseaudio, works fine with Alsa.

Have a Acer Aspire One D225E that I've set up with Gnome 3. Everything seems to be working except I'm not getting any sound out of my microphone. I've messed around with the sound settings in the gnome settings app with no success. Using alsamixer, I've made sure the mic channel is unmuted.
I'm able to record sound with Audacity using Alsa and play it back fine. When I switch to pulseaudio however, I get nothing. This wouldn't be a problem, except skype only allows you to use pulseaudio to record if you have that installed.
I've checked the wiki troubleshooting section on Pulseaudio and found the section on Acer Aspires, but solutions in the link led to a dead end. Nothing has worked so far that I've tried.

  • Cannot record ingame sound with glc (-git)

I have a problem with recording ingame sound with some games with glc (well, glc-git). glc says, it can record sound from games, if they use alsa (or sdl and forcing sdl to use alsa). As long as I don't use pulseaudio, this shouldn't be a problem. But for some games, I can't get the sound recording to work. The 2 at the moment are:
    FTL
    Amnesia: The Dark Descent
I usually get a message like this:
    [ 1.46s alsa_hook error ] 0xa8a8170: unsupported audio format 0x0e
    [ 1.46s alsa_hook error ] 0xa8a8170: can't extract hardware configuration: Operation not supported (95)
I can record the game, but not the audio. If someone can help or test it, if it works for him, that might be nice. Or if someone knows a workaround or so. Or if someone can confirm, that there is no audio recording for those 2 games (but I actually don't wanna hear it... :-) ).
Also there are plenty of games, I got the audio recording to work with. You can see it in my youtube-channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/ChemBroTronNo1

doorknob60 wrote:Do you use 64 bit? I don't have a copy of Amnesia downloaded right now, but if Amnesia is a 32 bit binary game, and you use 64 bit, you need to make sure you have the proper 32 bit libraries. lib32-glc will probably be enough.
That's not the issue, the problem is that some games are firing 32-bit float audio (0x0e type as indicated in the error) into ALSA through whatever means, and the standard GLC only supports 16, 24 and 32bit signed int audio. My fork above adds very rudimentary support for float.
