Arch does not umount busy disks before shutdown?

Hello,
Been using Arch on my Laptop, Desktop, Firewall and HTPC for a couple years now. I really like the setup.
When shutting down the pc, Arch runs the shutdown scripts that umount the mounted volumes. If the volume is busy, it gives me a message:
"/mnt/sdc4: device is busy"
But then continues to power off, leaving my disk(s) in an inconsistent state on boot. It seems to me that Arch should wait until the disks are properly un-mounted before shutting off.
Does anyone else see this as an issue?
Thanks,
Nate

  • Systemd does not umount in spite of StopWhenUnneeded=true

Before going into details I have to say that although I am a seasoned Linux user, I am a noob to both systemd and Arch.
My goal is to setup a backup routine that starts automatically upon connection of the relevant USB storage which cleans up after itself (i.e.: umounts).
With the help of this resource, I got the first half running. But systemd does not umount.
    This is the code:
    /etc/udev/rules.d/00-luks-usb.rules

    KERNEL=="sd*", \

The unit dev-mapper-schwarzeplatte is created automatically.
I searched for where dependencies might be and tried the following, but it did not lead me to anything.
    $ sudo systemctl list-dependencies var-run-media-user-schwarzeplatte.mount
    var-run-media-user-schwarzeplatte.mount
    ● ├─-.mount
    ● ├─dev-mapper-schwarzeplatte.device
    ● └─system.slice
    $ sudo systemctl list-dependencies var-run-media-user-schwarzeplatte.mount --reverse
    var-run-media-user-schwarzeplatte.mount
    ● └─dev-mapper-schwarzeplatte.device
Does anyone have insight what I should do?
(Bonus question: How could a desktop notification [KDE] be fired once the backup has finished, detailing the result?)
    Thank you for reading!

You could see if there are any messages written to the logs, if you have a terminal open with this running:
    journalctl -f
then plug the thing in and see what happens when it is meant to umount.

I don't use KDE but may be pipe it through osd_cat? e.g.
    echo "NOTIFIED\!" | osd_cat -d10

  • Arch does not detect /dev/sdb

    HI everybody,
Like the title says, Arch does not detect a second SATA hard drive I have installed on my computer.
I've searched around Google and the forums and I've doesn't found any helpfull tip.
The Arch installation is fresh, I just made it tonight, and cfdisk (during the installation) had recogniced the drive.
I've posted this here because I'm new on Arch, coming from Ubuntu and Fedora distros and I feel like a real Newbie
Here's some outputs that may be useful:

    Thanks for the help!

I had the drive connected to a eSATA port, but I pluged it to a ordinary SATA port, and the result is the same.
    The configuration on the BIOS:
    ATA/IDE Mode -> Native
    Configure Storage as -> IDE
It doesn't show more valuable information except for the location of any drive on any SATA port.
dmesg output, it can be useful for someone:

  • HT1363 after pressing Menu and Select, when the Apple sign appears, I immediately press select and play/pause, but again the red X sign appears. so it does not go to Disk Mode. Has anyone had this issue? I would be grateful if you could tell me what to do

The red X has appeared in my Ipod Classic Screen. Apple support tells me that I need to first put it manually on disk mode. to put it on disk mode I ought to press menu and select buton togeher, when the apple sign shows up, hold select button and play together.
After pressing Menu and Select, when the Apple sign appears, I immediately press select and play/pause, but again the red X sign appears. so it does not go to Disk Mode. Has anyone had this issue? I would be grateful if you could tell me what to do.

Thank you everyone for the replies. It defiantly helped point me in the right direction. With any luck, I will have my replacement phone sometime tomorrow.
I was able to call the iPhone support line this morning. The Apple rep stayed on the line with me for about an hour until he was sure the new phone would ship out. For $199 plus $29 for expedited handling I was able to get the replacement ordered with overnight shipping. Since the replacement doesn’t involve ATT&T I have no reason to suspect any further delays. Kudos to the Apple rep that helped me straighten out this mess.
It’s a shame that AT&T cares so little for their existing customers. Not only did they try to sell me the same phone for $499, they outright refused to help me. They also lied to me on numerous occasions and strung me along for close to three weeks for something that only took an hour to complete with the Apple rep.
I filed a formal complaint against AT&T through the Better Business Burrow as well as requested a review of our cooperate contract with AT&T. Our company currently has over 3000 phones with AT&T and there contract comes up for bid the end of our fiscal year (this October). We will be giving it heavy consideration before we consider renewing their contract.
I doubt that any of that will matter to a company that cares so little about their customers, but you never know.
Thanks again for all your help. I would probably still be trying to get my replacement for the next few months if it wasn’t for your suggestions.

  • [SOLVED] Arch does not start into gnome desktop

I installed arch from the scratch into a new hard drive due to a disk failure in the old one. After installing it, I booted into gnome3 desktop without problems.
Today I have upgraded it by performing:
    #pacman -Syu
and also I have installed some other no important packages mplayer, banshee, etc... also I have seen that my kernel has been upgraded into 3.11.4-1-ARCH fro 3.10.10-1-ARCH.
After rebooting, my arch does not boot, even in fallback mode. It starts cleaning blocks from the partitions, and then after it is done, cursor is blinking and no other messages are printed out. It stays with cursor blinking forever. I have a GUID Partition table and a LVM2 where all paritions are made.
I can log in into console by pressing CTRL+ALT+F2. Once I have prompted I have no network interfaces, only lo (loopback). If I do:
    #ip link show
    #ip addr list
I only get lo (loopback) interface listed, others like wifi and ethernet cable does not appear.
    If I perform below:
    #journalctl -xn
I do not see any problematic message, only this one:
Failed to open private bus connection
Any ideas why arch is not booting and get into gnome session (login window)?
    UPDATED:
The problem is that once I have performed the full system update with:
    #pacman -Syu
My kernel images has been upgraded and successfully generated into 3.11.4-1-ARCH but I have seen that my kernel, after log in to console and performing:
    $uname -r
it says kernel version continues being 3.10.10-1-ARCH so at startup images genereated into 3.11.4-1-ARCH do not match so cursor remains blinking forever....
I am trying to update the kernel but now I have no internet connection, no network interfaces are shown.... so how to do this now? chrooting?

ewaller wrote:Check the output of uname -a and of pacman -Qi linux and ensure that the versions match.  If they don't, you are somehow starting using the wrong kernel and it cannot find its modules.
You are right, see my updated post, for some reason image were successfully generated into 3.11.4-1-ARCH but kernel has not been updated and it remains in 3.10.10-1-ARCH.... so they do not match and arch does not boot.... so cursor remains blinking forever....

  • Thunderbolt WD Duo, does not show in Disk Utility

Hi Have imac 27 (late 2012) with 10.8.3 update OSX. Connecting to WD Thunderbolt Duo, the disk does not show in disk Utility, sys log or in any connection to the system. WD utility does not seems it either. Restart does not help. By disk returning to seller, the disk works fine on other comp (with the same cable, with the same power adapter)
Is there any issue known with the thunderbolt ports? Tried both all found on internet, but no resolution, to my issues.
Seems to be my imac hardware or maybee the software (thunderbotl 1.2) update.
    Lukas

All thunderbolt port tried, cable exchanged, no change
I have done following procedure , no change
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Af:statusIndicator does not show busy icon when a command button is click

    Hi Guys,
af:statusIndicator does not show busy icon or motion when a command button is click
I am working on an excel data upload functionality on .jspx page. I use “af:inputFile” file uploader to upload an excel file then process the data and store it as a list of objects in memory and display it in “af:table” table
I added “af:statusIndicator” to the page to show the user that the page is progressing while the data is uploading and when it is saving the data to the database.
In this case, when the “af:inputFile” is clicked to upload the excel file - the status indicator shows a progress icon (movement) which is expected and is good. However, after the data have been display in the table when I click on a command button that saves the data to the database – I expected the status indicator to start its busy motion but that is not happening. Whereas, the command button grayed out and is disable when I clicked the button until the operation is completed.
Is there any way to start the statusIndicator when a command button is clicked?
    I tried the following options
    *<af:statusIndicator id="si1_uploadStatus" partialTriggers="pc1:cb1 pc1:table"/>*
Where pc1:cb1 is the command button and pc1:table is the table
    *<af:commandButton text="Submit Uploads" id="cb1"*
    *disabled="#{!viewScope.batchUploadController.allSavable}"*
    *partialTriggers="::infFilePath"*
    *action="#{viewScope.batchUploadController.saveUploadedData}"*
    *blocking="true"/>*
    Thanks,

    Can somebody please address this?
    Thanks,

    Dear Gurus,
We are using Automatic PO generation through ME59, we also applied one SAP note to pick the custom document type through ME59 (normally the system pick NB as standard document)
In  MN05 - if i set as default output type 1 - print ( then the document is generating with the correct document with correct number range)
But if i set in MN05 - default output as 2 - fax ( then i am getting this Update was terminated - Class PO - Number 366 - Device ARCH does not exist).
    Please advice
    Regards

    Dear Friend,
Output determination for fax is not done properly. check the device connnectivity.
    SPRo>>Maintain Message type of PO
For the particular document type - i have removed the default PO Print out settings - now its working fine. Is this the right way?

    Hi everyone,
I deployed 2 hyper v vitual machines a while ago, and i did that because I needed to test my current game Project, which is an
online game. However, i've had some problems with my Windows installation then I had to reset the pc by making it a refresh
install. I still have the hyper v virtual disks, but i cannot attach it to a new hyper-v virtual machine. it pops up this message:
    "the storage
where the virtual hard disk is located does not support virtual disk sharing". I dont know anything about virtual machines, so I
didnt know I had to make the disk sharable. How can I force to attach the hard disk to a new hyper-v? I dont want to go t
hrough the whole proccess of installing the operating system all over again and updating it....
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Hi MrDebugging,

When I Try to add a SCSI Controller, and then I click browse to add a UNC I get this:
    C:\Users\Public\Documents\Hyper-V\Virtual hard disks\ClienMachine.vhdx
but I tried placing in different location, and the same problem occurs!
By the way, Im not on a server , I am a domestic user and I am running it on my
    Windows 8.1
According to the error message , it seems that it is not a permission issue .
The VM is Gen 1 or Gen2 ?
Generally the error message occurs when you enable "shared vhdx" on standalone/client hyper-v host :
Please try to attach the VHDx file to IDE controller if it is a Gen 1 virtual machine (because only the SCSI controller has the option "virtual hard disk sharing" and Gen 1 VM only can boot from IDE )
All in all , please do not use this feature without CSV or Scale-Out File Server with SMB 3.0 on file-based storage .
If it is not the case , please detail steps what you did .
