+1 for HDD.  Recommend you use smartmontools to understand if errors have been thrown.  Here is an example of errors on one of my machines:
# smartctl --all /dev/sda
Error 442 occurred at disk power-on lifetime: 24196 hours (1008 days + 4 hours)
When the command that caused the error occurred, the device was doing SMART Offline or Self-test.
After command completion occurred, registers were:
ER ST SC SN CL CH DH
40 51 00 c3 8d 75 e1 Error: UNC at LBA = 0x01758dc3 = 24481219
Commands leading to the command that caused the error were:

Smartctl can do short test and if completes without errors, try a long test.  Still no errors?  Good.  You can look around for bad sectors on each partition `e2fsck -cckx /dev/sdXX`
EDIT:  ...usually dmesg will show you when bad things are happening with your filesystem and bad blocks.  I recently had to recover a system that suffered this fate and the dmesg output was rich with these errors.

  • Applications randomly freeze for a few seconds?!

    Hi guys,
I have had nothing but trouble with this most recent iMac I purchased 4 months ago. It's the 24" described in my profile. AppleCare came out and recently replaced my faulty HDD, and put a 500gb Hitachi in (replacing 500gb Seagate).
Anyway, for no reason, after a fresh install and all the updates, applications will freeze for a few seconds and show the spinning beach ball- doesn't matter what application (Wow, Safari, Quicktime, Skype, Adium, etc.)- anything! I can see in activity monitor that there is a spike in the disk activity at the time, but cannot explain why. It's a brand new hard-drive! Interestingly, there is no corresponding jump in CPU or RAM access, so it's obviously some kind of data-dump issue with the HDD....the new HDD...
Looking in Activity Monitor, it appears to be the data read/sec that is spiking.
This is extremely frustrating, and I thought the new HDD would solve this, but apparently not. I don't particularly wish to reinstall OSX, and AppleCare in Australia is shut at the moment (midnight)
Does anyone know of a solution, or why it's happening?
I never had ANY of these problems with my first 24" that I bought late last year, with stock everything (hdd, gfx, etc.)....I feel like this one is faulty by nature....
    Thanks!
EDIT: http://forums.mactalk.com.au/showthread.php?t=36763 shows my original HDD issue with the previous HDD....you can see this *****

Hmm, I actually think it might be this new HDD that has been installed. Whenever it wakes from sleep, it takes a MUCH longer time than my previous machine, and even my previous hdd which was faulty.
And I can hear it first start to spin the HDD up in a little whir, then the clicky sorta bits where it is reading it, and then finally after the spinning ball, it gives me the PWD screen.
It has to be the HDD. Calling Apple in the morning...
Sound like that could be a HDD problem. One way to confirm it is to look at the Console application from your Utilities folder. Look at the System Log and Console Log and see if you see any lines with text like "disk0s2: I/O error." at the times when you see the freezes and hear the clicks. Note that the numbers in the disk0s2 part can change, depending on how your drives are set up.

    Thanks, Charles.
Looking at the Console log, it doesn't seem to have any i/o errors. Since both logs are quite lengthy, and the quoting system here is a bit akward, I've linked them:
    Console.log: http://www.miraclesalad.com/webtools/clip.php?clip=e04
    System.log: http://www.miraclesalad.com/webtools/clip.php?clip=e06
Couldn't really see anything there, but have a look if you'd like. Looking forward to calling Apple Support today and finding out what the deal is...only just got this new HDD put in!

  • Macbook freezes for a few seconds

I have a macbook pro (mac OS 10.7.5). As I use it ,the colorful spinning ball appears for no reason and the mac freezes for a few seconds. When I write something, when i use Itunes ,when i scroll down it happens everytime. I did a format on my hard drive but nothing change. Does anybody know what is going wrong?

The next time you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Freezing for a few seconds after switching tabs, freezing for a second without doing anything.

    Hello
I use Firefox v. 25.0 (If i remember correctly I had this problem at 24 too) and I my browser freezes for a few seconds, maybe every 10 seconds. It only freezes for about give or take, 3 or 4 seconds but it is starting to bug me.
    I have tried
-> Safe mode - still happens in safe mode.
-> Restarting firefox (multiple times) - The last few restarts I have removed/disabled any add ons or extentions. It always starts with out the freezing, but maybe after 1 or 2 days the freezing comes back again. This time I'm just half way done with it so I haven't bothered to disable much.
-> Checking for multiple duplicated files in the firefox folder - didn't have any.
I apologize that this is a commonly asked question, but I wanted to see if I could get any help here before having to move to chrome (which is not recommended from my sister), or internet explorer (which is in my recycle bin...)
    Thank you in advance.

Although your IE shortcut might be in the recycle bin, you'll still want to have IE installed for those special sites that only support IE...
Do you usually have a lot of tabs open? By default, Firefox updates the file which stores open windows and tabs every 15 seconds. The larger this file gets, the longer this takes. A major overhaul was made for Firefox 25 to make this more efficient, so this might not be your issue, but you can stretch the interval out to 60 seconds and see whether that makes a difference. Here's how:
    (1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (2) In the search box that appears above the list, type or paste '''session''' and pause while the list is filtered
    (3) Double-click '''browser.sessionstore.interval''' and change the value from 15000 to 60000 (this value is in milliseconds: 15000/1000 = 15 seconds, 60000/1000 = 60 seconds). I don't know whether this takes effect immediately or the next time you start Firefox.
    Does that help?
If that doesn't make much/any difference, have you set up Firefox Sync?

Thanks for you post, I was under the impression that one of the new macbook pro's comes with 16GB RAM out of the box.
I'll try your solution although I feel like is rather utilise the RAM I've paid for.
http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/10462096123 Suggested that it's possibly the new memory compression causing the issues. This seems to fit, because I'm a game developer I tend to have quite a lot of memory intensive applications running.
Will report back if I find a solution, if there are any more suggestions I'm all ears.

Tried the un-install and getting the same problem although it takes a bit longer before it crashes this time. Checked the problem report and it looks the same as the previous reports.

  • Acrobat 7 freezes for a few seconds at every startup

I am hoping someone can please enlighten me as to why Acrobat 7 freezes for a few seconds everytime the program is started.  If starting the program directly from executing the associated pdf file, the program loads the first page, freezes (stops responding) for approx 6 to 8 seconds, then responds to user interface again.
It is not the machine as I have the same problem on many different machines.  Help please.

Disabling hardware acceleration seemed to solve the problem. Thank you all very much, but before I close this thread as solved, I've always had that feature enabled to the best of my knowledge. Why did it suddenly cause problems?

  • File selection dialog box freezes for a few seconds

When I try to open files / select files from within certain applications (e.g. Aperture, Photomatix) the file selection dialog box freezes for a few seconds which becomes irritating because I can't scroll to the actual file that I want very easily .)
(I notice the problem generally when I am working in photo editing applications. And yes, I do have some 25MB TIFFs in the target folder...)
I suppose this is because the finder is "loading" a preview of the files.
Does this happen to everyone (if so, it would be quite a Windows-like irritation untypical of OSX).
If not, then what could be going wrong here?

I have answered my own question by a bit more research.
It seems a lot of people having this trouble for a while. It is down to Logitech software. Specifically the Logitech Control Center.
    See this forum (last entry):
    http://bit.ly/eEomwp
The simple solution: uninstall Logitech Control Center. The mouse still works without it.

  • Please help: Mouse cursor on MBP repeatedly freezing for a few seconds

    Hi all
I bought a MBP last week, and today I started experiencing problems with the mouse cursor. No matter whether I'm using the trackpad or an external mouse (I've tried using both a wired Mighty Mouse and a wireless Logitech), when I'm moving the cursor it keeps freezing for a few seconds (perhaps less than a second), and then I "regain" control of it, only for it to freeze again after a short while.
The only thing that I can think of that might have something to do with this is that I replaced the 2GB of Apple RAM with 4GB of OWC RAM a couple of days ago. Can this be the reason?
Please help me, as this problem renders the computer impossible to use:(
    Thanks in advance
    Daniel
PS: I'm running Mac OS 10.5.1 and I've got the Keyboard Freeze Update Installed.

    Hi.
I have a similar problem, however I realized it is somehow related to weather the airport is on. If I turn it off, there are no freezes. It is weird, and I'm going to go with it to Apple.

  • Long click to select an alternate tool, the flyout freezes for a few seconds

When I long click to select an alternate tool, the flyout freezes for a few seconds before I can select a tool. How can I fix this? My only work around right now is to know the tool shortcut and then to cycle through it with shift+tool shortcut.
    Thanks,

So I don't know what happened. This has been the case ever since I can remember, but today I got a wacom tablet and now the tablet and the mouse can use the sidebar as normal. All I can assume is that the drivers for the tablet fixed some preference list file error...

  • Qosmio F20: MCE picture freezes for a few seconds

my f20 my media centre tv picture freezes for a few seconds then the processors fan kicks in and the picture comes back. is this connected I have checked the ariel on other devices and the signal is ok

    Hello
In my opinion the picture freezes for a few seconds because the CPU starts a new background process. As far as I know similar issues occur if the CPU performance usage goes to 100%.

  • IPod freezes for a few seconds but the sound continues playing

    Hello!
I recently transfered a large MP4 onto my iPod, and I found that the playback on the iPod occasionally freezes for a few seconds, and then continues playing, but the sound continues throughout. The same video plays OK on iTunes without any freezing. Could somebody help me please?

  • When workign with video, logic freezes for a few seconds then playbacks

    Dear all,
When i am working with video in logic 9.1, the playback freezes for a few seconds and then plays smoothly. This is irritating as when u score for movies, u cant sync the sounds. I tried converting the mov file into various formats, but still no luck. Strangely, the demos given with logic(the ones with videos) plays smoothly without the freezing.. pls help ...
    thanks

    Ken,
Yes , you were right. i researched on video formats and found, logic will only support uncompressed video formats. Like u said, i opened quicktime and exported my movie to DV coding. It works fine.. I also found out that, to have less CPU load, convert you video to "photo jpeg" coding.. Its smoother !!!1
    Cheers

  • Voice Signal Goes Dead for a Few Seconds From Time to Time

I live in a rural part of Marin County that has poor signal:  one bar or less.  I've purchased a signal booster which has increased my bar level to 4 -- which is terrific.  What I'm noticing however is that the voice signal goes dead for a few seconds (5 - 10 seconds) during a conversation.  This happens every few minutes. Voice connectivity then returns for a few minutes only to cut off again for a few seconds and so on.  This happens if I'm inside my house.  If I go outside, it doesn't seem to happen.  I've turned the booster box this way and that but no change.  I've also changed the ariel this way and that, but no change.  What's up with this?  It's very annoying to be on a call and have the sound go dead.

Hi yraglleb - Let's keep your audio clear and consistent! What model is your Network Extender? May I also ask the current iOS version of your device? Check Settings>General>About. Have you tested other phones on the same Extender? I look forward to getting this resolved!
    Thank you,
