Arch freezes on Compaq Presario V3415LA

Hi!
I'm trying to make Arch run on a Compaq Presario V3415LA, it's specs are:
AMD Sempron Mobile 3500+
GeForce Go 6150,
2 Gb Ram
Arch installs fine, but once installed, it will get stalled from time to time on the CLI for some seconds, and sometimes (always when I enter X), it will Freeze (like the bad freeze, where you have to push the power button to shut it down)
I'm using the 64 bit branch of  Arch Linux, with the latest update.
Have anyone had the same problem? (and know how to fix it
thanks a lot!
silencer

sorry.

Maybe i forgot something in the kernel(2.6.10)?

  • Arch on Compaq Presario CQ-320LA doesn't boot

Hi, recently i got a new compaq presario CQ-320LA, pretty looking machine and doesnt get too hot
but sadly i cant boot the "CORE DUMP" release iso on it getting this freeze (no error, no panic, just freeze)
here is the snapshot of the the freeze
    http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/7475/imagen048i.jpg
Looking at the point where loding freezes i traced the same kernel on my desktop pc and i supposed it is
calibrating the proccesor (the part where it displays the BogoMips of processor) so i tried supplying the kernel
with the mips detected with the 2.6.20 kernel with this parameter lpj=n ( Sets loops_per_jiffy to given constant, t)
    but even it gets just 3 o 4 more printk kernel-messages to reach the freeze again;
on the other side i could boot and install arch DUKE iso with a 2.6.21 kernel. And from the installed system i tried to update to the
core dump kernel in the iso... so everything installs fine, the initrd generation too but when i try to boot with the 2.6.24 kernel
    the same freeze
I've tried all the tips in the wiki (line kernel params acpi=off .. ) but nothing
I also tried checkng the dmesg output of sane system and i cant see anything suspicious. Just the clasic hardware detection and a ton of
ata driver errors saying the disc is resetting itself but in the end the SATA disc gets loaded with no problems
I've tried all other distros with same results (all of them dated  to 2008 too)
So now i have a duke arch on laptop with a kernel linux 26.21 and xorg with embarassing 800x600 vesa resolution and
it worrks fine but  to use the catalyst or the radeonhd xorg driver i need
at least a 2.6.25 kernel (the one in the CORE DUMP iso). The problem is that i dont have a network conection available, just my old, undated
but trusty archlinux reposiitory last syncd on june of the last year. I use the same packages (in a custom made dvd) on the desktop pc and everythin ok
Anyways, if someone does what could be the thing that freezes the load , please help me
    The laptop specs are:
AMD Sempron™ para PC notebooks SI-42
    Gráficos ATI Radeon™ HD 3200
    SATA drive ( a SAMSUNG 160gb)
    and 1g MB

does anyone uses presario anyway ?

  • Compaq Presario model SR5710F hangs/freezes when cpu cooling fan switches to higher speed

Compaq Presario SR5710F with AMD Athlon X2 4450e dual core micro-processor - after the desktop has been on for a little while, I can hear the cpu cooling fan switch to a higher speed. As soon as the fan changes speed, the PC locks up. Power off/on is only option to recover. A precursory inspection did not reveal any noticeable build-up of dust/debris around case fan or cpu fan. Any suggestions?

    Hello DTCothren,
You state whenever your CPU fan goes to a higher speed the computer locks up, is that corret? I will try to assist you with this issue.
I would recommend you open up the hardware diagnostic tool on your computer, and run a full system test. This test does take some time so just allow it to run. If you not sure how to locate the program have a look at this document.
Please respond back at your earliest convenience.

  • Arch freezing TOO much

    Hi,
I'm here praying for Arch do not freeze while I'm writing.
For a while, even with 2.6.24-x, I've had a lot of freezes with Arch. Now that I updated to 2.6.25-x, these freezes is making my machine almost unusable. I don't even know how to start to find the problem, thought I think it's one of those things: nVidia proprietary drivers, ACPI, APIC, firefox3 hogging 100% of my CPU using proprietary Flash or scrolling the screen (this makes me nervous, really), mplayer (and other CPU intensive tasks), etc.
Generally, if I don't use firefox or mplayer, I can use some apps for something like 5 min. When using these apps, normally the machine freezes in 1 or 2 min.
I already tried disable composing (XFCE), not using nv proprietary driver, disabling ACPI, etc. but all with no success.
I already saw a lot of messages in this forum and in other distros about GNU/Linux, but none of them are specific. And no, I can't go to console, restart X, anything. The only solution is to pull the plug.
My machine is new, a Compaq Presario V6000 series laptop. No memory problems.
    Any hints? Thank you.

    dav7 wrote:
Rather than poke at video drivers, I recommend you do something a little different: Don't use X.
Just live in the console for an hour, and soak test whether your system locks up.
Also, tip: when X freezes, it locks the display, mouse and keyboard since it hooks them at the hardware level (I think)... but it does not actually lock the system up! With this knowledge in mind, ssh to your laptop from another machine (assuming you have another one... if you don't, ringing a friend to ssh to your box for you comes to mind, lol) and kill X from there. If ssh doesn't respond (you aren't asked for a pass), I'm completely wrong and you do indeed have a locked up laptop.

There's an easier way: switching virtual consoles - if X locks up you should still be able to do that.

  • Installation problems in Compaq Presario V2617LA Laptop

    Hello,
I am new in all of this Unix-Linux world and I need some help, here's my problem:
I have already partitioned and prepared my HDD to install Solaris, Windows and maybe Fedora (if someone recommends a better Linux it'll be appreciated), all of those three partitions perfectly identified and ready for the OS (it happens that I learn quickly, but I'm still new on this). I perfectly pass all Solaris 10 11/06 installation windows and requirements and Solaris begins installation, BUT when it all looks great, the installation (progress bar) just stops moving having 209.29 MBytes remaining and installing the 'Solstice Enterprise Agents 1.0.3 files for root file system', the wierdest thing is that the little slash-dash at the end is still turning around, the working processor light is on and nothing freezes (except when I navigate through the menu options), I have waited for a whole day and the installation does not finish and even re-downloaded Solaris and burn the image again two times and nothing.
Could it be a hardware compatibility problem? What do you think?

  • Compaq Presario CQ60-112LA: Problems with the wireless

    Hello!!! :D:D:D:D
I send my greetings to the community.
I want to write 2 things before to tell you about my problem:
    1. I'm sorry for my English, It isn't so good.
    2. I'm Newbie in Arch Linux but not in GNU/Linux (I'm not an expert ) and I've read the wiki and Forum Etiquette (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Forum_Etiquette).
I installed Arch Linux in my laptop, it's a Compaq Presario CQ60-112LA and It had installed Madriva Linux but I wanted to have more control on my computer and I decided to install
I followed the wiki's instructions and I could install Arch Linux correctly but I have a problem. I can connect to Internet by wireless, I haven't got wired access and I followed this instructions:
    (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wir … _available)
I could bring up the interface
    #ifconfig wlan0 up
#iwconfig wlan0 essid "BTHome..." key ABCDCD
    dhcpcd wlan0
dhcpcd: version X.X.X starting (I don't remember the real version, In this moment I'm sending this post from Mandrivas' Livecd)
    dhcpcd: wlan0: waiting for carrier
    dhcpcd: timed out
I tried to connect manually with static ip but I couldn't. I don't know what can I do. I can't continue without Internet, because I can't update my system and I can't install Kde4 ..
    I did this one:
    #modprobe -r ath5k
    modprobe ath_pci
But I didn't find any wireless interface, In Mandriva ath_pci works better than ath5k module, but I can't up ath_pci module..
Thank you very much for your help... And I apologized again for my english...

    HI;
The easiest thing to do is to spray canned air into the vents by the fan and heat sink. If a lot of dust comes out, that will probably take care of the issue. If no dust comes out, then you have other issues causing overheating and thermal shutdown. Take care not to overspin the fan blades when you blow the air into it.

  • Compaq Presario mouse isnt working properly

Im having certain issues with my touchpad. i jsut brought this computer about a week ago and sometimes areas of the touchpad doesnt bothering working. At some points and times the whole pad works but after a few minutes of not touching it it just stop working and only part of teh touchpad works. its very weird. the only area i can move the mouse after it freezes up is under the touchpad light where u can turn it off. only that area under it. ive tried windows update for synaptics touchpad/mosue drivers; ive tried device manage and select update, and also tried from teh site witht he highest selectable firmware.usually if i restart ,close the lid, or reset device it works fully again, but i dont wanna waste my time with a touchpad that wont wrok properly. i have to say compaq presario is a very nice laptop and i wouldnt want to take it back which the store i got it from ran out of stock. I just want to find a solution first incase i have to return it back.

  • Compaq Presario CQ61 VJ371EA - Status: 0xc000000f.

My Compaq Presario CQ61 Product No VJ371EA runs on Windows Premium 7 x64 os. I have been experiencing problems with it during startup. When I switch it on it goes to the Windows Boot Manager  and shows a black screen which says "windows failed to start because of a recent hard/software change. To repair the computer it asks me to insert the Windows installation disk and restart the computer which I do not have as I was stupid enough not to download the disk when I purchased the notebook in 2010.
Once it shows me this message and I press the enter key to continue, it takes me to the "Widnows Error Recovery" in which it gives me the option to "LAUNCH STARTUP REPAIR" which takes me back to the Windows Boot Manager and can continue indefinitely in this fashion. While in the Windows Error Recovery, it gives me the other option to "START WINDOWS NORMALLY" which sometimes after a NUMBER of ATTEMPTS will allow me to go to the log on screen for users, sometimes it just hangs up when the four Microsoft dots are just about appearing. If I manage to log on, sometimes after using the computer for 5, 10., 15 ..........60 minutes or even 6hrs it just FREEZES and I have to restart it again by pressing the power button, sometimes it will give the "START WINDOWS  NORMALLY" option or both with the "LAUNCH STARTUP REPAIR" option and I have to go through the dreaded exercise of trying to login. Meanwhile all work that I would not have save gets  lost. The other other thing is that the fan runs continuously and does not stop. I was using a friend notebook to make this post and its fan is quite most of the time while my notebook fan runs forever.
Please can you help me as I have most of my work in this notebook and I really need it to work. I am sorry my post is rather to long but I was trying to give as much detail as I can.
When it started hanging up used to do so if it was on and I was not using it for about 10minutes. Now I keep it on because if I turn it of - problem to log on.
    Thank you for you help

I would suggest backing up all of your data on the PC first just in case it is the hard drive.  I would then go to the following link which will tell you how to run a hard drive test.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00439024&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en
If it gives you an error then call 1-800-hp invent to setup a service or you could just purchase a new hard drive and run a recovery.  You would need recovery discs to do this though and you might still need to call hp or you could purchase them through the website at:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00810334&cc=ad&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_r1002_us...
Hopfully this helps answer your question.

Your laptop has two DIMM slots. The maximum amount of memory others have upgraded  to is 4GB. The maximum recommended by HP is 2 GB. The replacement memory will need to be PC2-5300, 667Mhz ,1.8v
Here is a link to memory at  Crucial.com.  Only use replacement modules from major memory makers who produce guaranteed compatible memory modules to avoid the risk of buying incompatible modules.

  • Do I need to replace video graphic card or power supply unit on hp compaq presario sr2180nx

    hello all
i saw a similar post over 4 years ago, however it doesn't address my issue.
my pc started stalling when i attempt to turn it on.  It wouldn't come on. Then after several tries every now and then it would come on. I was told through searching that it could be the video graphic card or the power supply. Therefore once i had the computer back on.  I never shut it off. However, i could reboot and it would come on.
Now it won't come on again. So i don't know what to replace. The video graphic card or the power supply.  If it is the graphic card, do i replace the one previously installed or add a new one. And if adding a new one, what is recommended to be compatible with my 300 watt supply unit? I'm lost as what route to take and how.Below are the details of my unit.
HP/Compaq Presario SR2180NX desktop PC with a P5LP-LE motherboard with an Integrated graphics using Intel GMA 950.
*Integrated video is not available if a graphics card is installed.
Also supports PCI Express x16 graphics cards
    300 watt supply.
thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

Is there an add-in video card in the slot? If so, remove it and try to turn on. If the problem is the video card it will turn on. If not it is the power supply.

  • Compaq Presario v6346ea: Which type of SATA controller?

I've recently bought an Intel X25-M/G2 Solid State Drive and was expecting read speeds of 200 MB/s on my Compaq Presario v6346ea notebook. Instead of that the maximum speed I get from CrystalDiskMark is 135 MB/s.
Now I'm suspecting the SATA controller of my notebook to not being able to handle the speeds of this Solid State Drive.
I've looked on HP's website to find out which type of SATA controller is used in my Compaq Presario v6346ea but can't find find any clear info on that subject.
From what I read at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA there are 3 types:
SATA Revision 1.0 (SATA 1.5Gb/s, max 150 MB/s throughput minus overhead.)
SATA Revision 2.0 (SATA 3Gb/s, max 300 MB/s minus overhead.)
SATA Revision 3.0 (SATA 6Gb/s, max 600 MB/s and up minus overhead)
Does anybody know which type of SATA controller is used in this Compaq Presario v6346ea notebook?

Thank you for the additional info. I ran SISoft Snadra and found some interesting stuff. For instance, it IDed the chipset as a mcp78s not a mcp77. It also indicates that it can use DDR3 memory. I'm not sure if that's accurate, as it conflicts with specs I've read elsewhere. If true, I wish I'd known that when I upgraded my RAM to 8GB. :-p Anyway, I've tried to determine the SATA revision, but I'm not sure if I'm going about it the right way. I went to "Storage Devices" and clicked the only available button: "Physical Disks , Storage adapters and devices". From there I can choose my internal hard drive from a menu, and it shows the maximum SATA mode as G2 / SATA300. But I'm not sure if this is in reference to the controller or the drive. I know that the drive is a SATA-II, so it would show that if it's displaying the drive's capabilities. It certainly tells me everything else I'd ever want to know about the drive. When I switch to my external USB HDD, it shows the maximum SATA as G3 / SATA600. For the DVD drive it shows G1 / SATA150. So I kind of think it's showing me the maximum capabilities of the drives, not the controllers.  Is there some other way to check the maximum SATA capabilities of the hard drive controller? Sorry. I'm not too familiar with SISoft Sandra, and it's not really obvious to me. And given what it's turned up about the chipset and the memory support, I want to be sure here. Thanks.
