Arch freezing TOO much

Hi,
I'm here praying for Arch do not freeze while I'm writing.
For a while, even with 2.6.24-x, I've had a lot of freezes with Arch. Now that I updated to 2.6.25-x, these freezes is making my machine almost unusable. I don't even know how to start to find the problem, thought I think it's one of those things: nVidia proprietary drivers, ACPI, APIC, firefox3 hogging 100% of my CPU using proprietary Flash or scrolling the screen (this makes me nervous, really), mplayer (and other CPU intensive tasks), etc.
Generally, if I don't use firefox or mplayer, I can use some apps for something like 5 min. When using these apps, normally the machine freezes in 1 or 2 min.
I already tried disable composing (XFCE), not using nv proprietary driver, disabling ACPI, etc. but all with no success.
I already saw a lot of messages in this forum and in other distros about GNU/Linux, but none of them are specific. And no, I can't go to console, restart X, anything. The only solution is to pull the plug.
My machine is new, a Compaq Presario V6000 series laptop. No memory problems.
Any hints? Thank you.

Rather than poke at video drivers, I recommend you do something a little different: Don't use X.
Just live in the console for an hour, and soak test whether your system locks up.
Also, tip: when X freezes, it locks the display, mouse and keyboard since it hooks them at the hardware level (I think)... but it does not actually lock the system up! With this knowledge in mind, ssh to your laptop from another machine (assuming you have another one... if you don't, ringing a friend to ssh to your box for you comes to mind, lol) and kill X from there. If ssh doesn't respond (you aren't asked for a pass), I'm completely wrong and you do indeed have a locked up laptop.

There's an easier way: switching virtual consoles - if X locks up you should still be able to do that.

  • AI CS3 freezes too much

Does anyone know why - AI would keep getting hung? Every action freezes this program tonight.
Somehow I figured out that if I click on some other thing (such as the AI "minimize" icon in the bar at the bottom of the screen. This gets AI's attention so that I work- but...I may commit a crime if this keeps up.
I have closed all other programs- which is a drag- since I go back and forth alot. no change.
I closed AI and restarted it.
    no change.
    I have winxp AICS3.
One thing has changed recently- I finally set up an additional monitor - and am working with them. But I turned this off for a while assuming that this was the problem.....it wasn't.
photoshop CS3 didn;t give me grief-
    Everything else is responding typically.
    any ideas?

    Ha, Ha. Thanks.
Here is something else obnoxious. This version of AI CS3 (for winxp) was purchased via download. I cannot find the preferences file! That can't be. I have already trashed a preference file on another computer - (previous hard times-which was a cure before- )so I know I could find it and that this often helps and has.
I have already "shown hidden files"- and searched and searched!
It's weird. I have been using this since march 08-and set preferences myself- where is the darn thing!
I did disconnect the two monitors- and returned to one only... to see if that is the issue- which, based upon how much more fun I was having could only be the answer- but there was no improvement.
Do you think I am looking at a reinstall?

you could just click on Safari on the top of the screen and bring the menu down and select reset safari, that will erase your cache, cookies, and history... Hope that helps...

Fire fox crashes and freezes if i use it too much (kind of a good thing). For example if i use stumble fire fox will start to slow down then freeze completely. I am using windows XP pro and a pretty decent computer. All software is up to date and i do no have a virus. I have even tried to disable my add-ons and plug-ins but it did not make a difference. Does anyone have a solution or should i just switch to chrome?

  • My phone is freezing, restarting too much, and erased all apps!?

I have a serious problem i believe. For about 10 days i can hardly using my phone. Phone has started too freeze and restart itself too much. And 3 days ago it has erased all the apps for home screen but i can see apps are still covers same amout of memory. My apps store is not showing anything also. For the question what caused this; only thing comes to my mind is the last app i installed. (wikiplaces app) What should I do? what is this? Does not see like ram overuse causşng this. (2,5 gb used memory on phone)

It might work, it might not.  Many users get only the latest backup to choose from when performing a restore.  If your backup was made after the delete, then it won't work.   If you do try a restore, I would strongly advise that you sync your photos from your device to a compter using USB (that's safer than relying on photo stream).  There are countless posts by users who restored and lost all their photos.

  • [Solved] Dolphin taking too much time to respond

Dolphin, while used by an ordinary user, takes too much time to respond, especially when firefox is running. The time it takes to initialize is also very lengthy. At times, it does not even open up and even if active, it hangs for quite sometime before being responsive again while trying to select a file or two.
At the same time, it works rather faster when called as super user through command line using $sudo dolphin
But then, the console displays lot of error messages as follows.
    sebinaj ~
    $ sudo dolphin

There's a large thread around about this Dolphin problem.

  • Too much errors/messages in Web Analysis reports stops workspace

Too often workspace stops to work for the client with the following (example) messages. It seems that too much informational and error messages from reports (like a non working report link or missing member) gives the workspace client so much trouble that login off or closing the browser is the only solution. This seems not the right workaround. Anyone experiencing the same?

it seems that all errors are related to the migrated anaqlyzer report. In the new 931 version less characters are allowed to use than the old 71 version.
In the main name of the reportgroup the migration just rplaces the wrong characters. But links and url insite reportgroups and reports are not changed during migration. Activating (clicking on it) such links is the main cause of the freeze.

  • My late-2009 21.5-inch iMac is freezing so much, it's basically unusable.

About 2 weeks ago, I started to see a slow decline in overall speed. Now, my iMac is so slow, and freezes up so much, that I basically can't use it. I have ran the Apple hardware test that came with my mac on a CD, checked to make sure I wasn't using too much RAM when the freezing happens, verified the disk image, and it all came out normal. I've also tried creating a new user, and that had no effect. However, I have noticed that periodically (maybe once every week) I see a small window pop-up and disappear almost immediately. Today, I was finally able to see what the title bar said on the little window. It said easyNAT. I googled this, and it's some kind of 3D modeling software by a company named bionatics. I've never downloaded anything like that. Could this be the problem? How do I fix it? If this isn't the problem, what do you recommend I do? I was planning on taking it to the Apple store this weekend, but it would be preferred if I could fix it myself. I haven't downloaded anything or done anything different with my mac since I started seeing the slow-down. One thing I did notice is that it started to do the freezing thing in safari, and slowly spread to the rest of my applications, and eventually the finder. Also, whenever I try to download the beta 2 for the iPad (I'm a developer), It will finish downloading, and when I try to open the disk image, it will try to verify it FOREVER and eventually say something along the lines of error:input/output and not open it. Could it be a virus? Sorry I've been rambling for so long. I'm trying to give as much info as possible, so I can get this fixed. Thanks for your help in advance.

Now, my iMac is so slow, and freezes up so much, that I basically can't use it.
If you have any peripherals connected to your computer, disconnect them. iMac still slow and freezes up?
How large is your hard drive and how much space do you have left.
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run _*Repair Disk*_ from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select *Disk Utility.*
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click *First Aid.*
    Click _*Repair Disk.*_
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751
easyNAT thing I talked about earlier showed up in the processes, but it took up 0% of the CPU. *I still have absolutely no idea what that is.*
It's also a plug-in. Spotlight search your hard drive for easyNAT. If you download Find File or Easyfind, your search will be made easier. Both utilites can be found at Macupdate.
I've never downloaded anything like that
Anybody uses your computer besides yourself?
I was planning on taking it to the Apple store this weekend, but it would be preferred if I could fix it myself.
If you have Apple Care, give them a call. Let them do what you paid all that money for them to do.
If your iMac is still under its one year warranty, take full advantage of it before it runs out. Especially, if you do not have Apple Care.
    Could it be a virus?
No. There are no viruses for os x.
Sorry I've been rambling for so long.
Rambling is good. The more details we have from you the easier it is to help with troubleshooting. So speaking for myself, thank you for rambing.

  • OBIEE Consistency Check is taking too much time

    Hi,
When I run consistency check globally, it takes too much time. Itt  is waiting after completing about %80 of it. I can't click on it, the application is freezing. How can I recover it? What can be the cause of this problem?
    Thank you for your attention,

    Hello Mohan,
The DBTABLOG table does get large, the best is to switch off logging. If that's not possible, increase the frequency of your delete job, also explore one more alternative have a look at the archival object: BC_DBLOGS, you could archive old records (in accordance with your customer's data retention policies) to reduce the size of the table.
Also, have a look at the following notes, they will advise you on how to improve the performance of your delete job:

Darn, memory usage lowered to 41MB by itself. I guess that's good. The topic can be closed.

  • Accidentally associated Adobe AIR file with Acrobat, now an otherwise easily fixed problem has been causing me far too much anger.

I accidentally associated an Adobe AIR file to open Adobe Acrobat in it's stead, now an otherwise easily fixed problem has been causing me far too much anger.
Basically I downloaded an .air file after recently reformatting my computer, and I tried to open it with Acrobat. Now, since there is no actual application and or shortcut created by AIR I can't just tell the file to use that. I've found that I'm not alone in this issue, have tried a few things I've read on both this forum and others, and have come to no resolution as of yet. This file isn't anything of any great significance, but it bugs me so much that at this point I just want to know how to fix this and win this little battle.
Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help.

Thank JJMack - that has helped me get closer to the problem.
I opened the resource monitor and you can see a screenshot of what is going on when I try to save a simple, 9 Kb graphic. (I'm saving an RGB JPG, not a PNG or animated GIF file. Doing anything complex / memory intensive than saving or simple edits in PS is almost impossible.)
As you can see from the screencap below, when I save (it doesn't make a difference if it is save vs. save to web or a network or local drive) Photoshop becomes unresponsive. (From past experiences, if I try to switch to a non-Adobe program it will also freeze and sometimes crash.) When PS becomes unresponsive, the NT Kernel & System immediately goes to the top of the list and uses 200+ threads.
From there Photoshop will typically be frozen for about a minute, then will recover and take another minute or two to finish the save. At that point PS is okay, but the rest of the computer is still frozen with CPU oscillating up to almost 100%.
As soon as the NT Kernel & System settles down, everything is back to normal again (as long as I haven't used other programs, which in one case required a hard reboot.)
It is pretty clear the problem is rooted in Adobe / Window 7 as I only have this problem with Adobe programs. (Illustrator isn't as bad, but I've had problems with it as well.)
The question is: How do I fix this, as it is killing my ability to work?
    Thanks! Julie
