Arch gets *really* bleeding-edge: releases KDE 4.2 before KDE does!

I know distro devs get KDE a full week or so earlier to begin testing with their distro, etc., and the essentially unchanged RC was here before, but KDE 4.2 stable is in Arch's main repos now - _before_ it's available on the KDE web site! I mean, I knew Arch was bleeding-edge, but come on!
http://www.archlinux.org/news/431/
(And, yes, the 4.2 ChangeLog link is broken, I suspect there will be such a page within 24hrs)
www.kde.org still says KDE 4.2 is to be released tomorrow, and I can't download the 4.2.0 source from the location specified in the KDE 4.2 PKGBUILDs. None of the KDE mirrors have it.
Not that I'm complaining...

Very nice issue, and thanks for it!
Forgive me if this has been proposed before, but has merging the magazine and the newsletter been considered? I know the newsletter is more focused on Arch community happenings and the magazine seems more focused on general features, but I think it'd be awesome if we could get both in one.

  • The bleeding-edge & configs

Most of my linux experience has happened running Arch, and I've come to really enjoy the rolling release model, aur dev pkgbuilds and overall bleeding-edge aspect of the distro.
As a hacker at heart, I like to keep up with the latest versions of my favorite software, excrutiatingly configuring every bit to taste.
However, I've had a backlash lately, when my work got me administrating a couple of vps boxes running other linux distros.
What happened was that most of my dotfiles simply didn't work with the versions packaged on these distros, to a point that trying to find the culprit options ended up being too time consuming, so I just gave up and used the dreaded defaults for most things, from bash to tmux, which was rather frustrating.
Has anyone faced the same issues, and managed to find a way to stay on the bleeding while using arch, yet maintain the portability of their configs, or is it just too much work ?

to be honest, I'm a natural born slacker and don't bother about bleeding edge at work. I keep my own computer running on Arch with my very own, personal setup, but all the other machines I look after get the pre-installed-default-outofthebox-setup with only necessary tweaks to suit the working environment.
I did try running arch on a number of machines at our shop, but in the end it's too much work. Also, when I'm not there, nobody knows what to do to keep the machines up-to-date. Now everything Linux is running Debian and Linux-Mint and everybody is happy.
I however, will not give up my arch setup

  • Off the bleeding edge

After 10+ years I can't be arsed with this bleeding edge business any more. I'm getting to that point in life where one breakage is one too many. I blame the children.
Problem is I've never used any of the major distros other than Ubuntu (I was at college and needed the money) on a laptop so I'm interested in the opinion of the community when the time comes for a bit more "stability".
I'm considering Debian or Fedora. I guess they're solid choices?

dtw wrote:I'm getting to that point in life where one breakage is one too many.
What kind of breakage are you trying to avoid?
You will ALWAYS experience some form of breakage no matter which operating system you use, the reason being perfectly summed up in this 30 second video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bm7JH1FT_yM
dtw wrote:I'm considering Debian or Fedora. I guess they're solid choices?
For what reasons would you consider using Fedora? The Wikipedia describes Fedora as "focusing on innovation, integrating new technologies" and having "a relatively short life cycle". ..."Having no breakage" is not on the list of features for Fedora.
Debian has a great history of very little breakage. ...But that also means you will be using old software. The current stable version of Debian ("wheezy") was released in May 2013. If you were to install it today you would get an incredible and stable operating system with available software packages in the tens of thousands. You would also be using Linux 3.2 (Does it support all the hardware you need?), LibreOffice 3.5 (Does it open the documents you need like the current version 4.3 does?), and Firefox 10 (I've been corrected. ). Of course these are just specific examples, but my point is that "stability" means "feature frozen", so if the operating system you choose does not have software with the features you need when you install it, then you're not getting those features until you install the next version. You COULD chose to install newer software from unofficial repositories, but you will have no guarantee that they won't break something, which is what you're trying to avoid.
The NEXT stable release of Debian is (probably) happening within the next few months. If you were to install and configure Debian today, you would be RE-installing and RE-configuring it in a few months. Is that something you are willing to do every two to three years?
Debian (and Red Hat Enterprise Linux and others, I'm sure) are VERY GOOD operating system, and are used extensively around the world, especially in situations where "no breakage" is a requirement. But they come with a trade off. Make sure you are willing to accept those trade offs before jumping in!
In recent years, there seems to be a trend in some Linux distributions of keeping the "operating system" packages stable and only upgrading the fast-paced "user software" packages. So the latest Firefox might crash but the operating system won't, that sort of thing. So that's another thing to consider.
Also, keep in mind that I've been using Arch Linux for the past five years, so I may be out of touch with the latest developments in Linux distributions.

  • [Fake News] Arch Linux to change its release cycle

Today the Arch Linux community proclaimed that Arch Linux will change its release cycle and version numbering, as this was requested by billions of corporate goonies, Freemasons and Illuminati throughout the universe.
Releases will henceforth be scheduled in intervals deemed posh by the GNU/Linux community at the particular moment. The version numbering will be based on year the a new release is being published. Arch Linux "2016" will be released in early 2006. All following releases will have an offset of at least 10 years to underline how much more pure dead brilliant Arch Linux is compared to Mandrake.
To achieve a smooth transition, an transitional release will be made at once, named "Useless Marketing Edition". The Arch Linux FTP server will be configured allow one download of the iso image only. This will also be an experiment to find out how the community will be able to spread such a limited edition.
An Arch Linux user who wishes to remain nameless said in an exclusive interview with the almighty incinerator: "This is a great opportunity for Arch Linux, the new release numbering will confuse and divert computer illiterate lusers from installing our beloved Arch Linux, freeing us from answering stupid support requests. Now we can finally start to work towards our ultimate goal: To become the only GNU/Linux community being as elitist as OpenBSD's."

Ach guys, you don't get it :-(
The version numbering scheme was supposed to mock the fact Mandrake plans to release their "2006" version in 2005. That reminds of old times, when (computer) magazines were trying to beat each other releasing the most up-to-date issue to the market. The whole affair became absolutely silly, there were magazines that had the "April" issue hitting the shelves at the end of January. These "issue number wars" occur every now and then.
The funny scenario I can imagine is that other (GNU/Linux) vendors could jump onto that train and "predating" their releases further and further.
The rest is just various mockery about lusers and other things found in the Mandrake's press release. And of course the arrogantly elitist OpenBSD community always deserves getting their arses whipped ;-)

  • My mac book gets really hot

my mac book pro gets really hot when its on is that normal and how do i keep it cool do i have a bad battery or something?

I do not recommend using fan control software as it can cause potential problems that seem to be ignored by most.
If you have a first generation MBP (a Core Duo model) the fans ran at much lower idle speed than the later models. However, if you have installed the SMC and other firmware updates released for that model then your fans' idle speeds should now be much higher. They are high enough to maintain the system at proper idle temperature and will ramp up as required to cool the computer under progressively higher loads. The design engineers know much better what they are doing than most of the amateurs on the Discussions.
Keep your room temperature down to 75ºF or cooler. Buy a Targus CoolPad ($25) and keep the computer on it while working to assure adequate air flow underneath. I have two MBPs that work just fine without any fan software - one of which is a first generation model. I've owned both for over two years.
If the computer is truly overheating then there is something defective that will require you taking it in for repair.
You can use the freeware iStatMenu - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - to monitor the temperatures to be sure they are within design specs. Normal range is from around 35ºC-85ºC for typical usage from idle to high loads. Thermal shutdown occurs at 125ºC.

  • I think my battery is fried.  It gets really hot sometimes when I charge it now it won't charge at all.  It froze up after the last update and I can't use it at all.

My phone froze up after last update and I can't use it at all.  I think the battery is fried as well.  It gets really hot sometimes when I charge it and now it won't charge at all.

Reset, hold both home and power buttons until the iPhone begins to start, usually takes about 10 seconds of holding both buttons. If still nothing try Reset while on Wall Charger, this can take about 20 seconds of holding both buttons while on Charger. If still nothing and you decide to Restore you iPhone with iTunes on computer, you may need to use DFU Mode Restore. Here are steps: Open iTunes on computer. Connect iPhone to computer with USB cable. Hold both Home and Power button, after exactly 10 seconds release the Power Button, keep holding the Home button until iTunes recognizes iPhone in Recovery Mode, usually about 20 seconds time. If the iPhone screen is black, blank this is DFU Mode. Click the Restore button of iTunes. DFU Mode can be difficult to enter sometimes, just keep trying. DFU Mode is a black, blank screen with iTunes saying Recovery Mode.

  • Phone gets really hot while using the YouTube app.............

My iPhone gets really hot while using YouTube. Is/has anyone else experienced this? Should I be concerned?I did a search and only came up with threads talking about the phone getting warm while charging, my phone does not get hot/warm while charging, only when using YouTube and sometimes while using Safari. Any input will be greatly appreciated!

When connected via WiFi or EDGE or no difference.
My iPhone sometimes gets considerable warm when connected via EDGE with low reception but this is rare when connected via WiFi or with good reception.

  • Hp pavilion dv4-1225dx getting really hot

ive been feeling my laptop get really hot the past few weeks... when it gets hotter ive just been turning it off but im starting to get worried somethings gonna fry.
the heat seems to be coming from the hard drive. the heat can be felt on the area just to the left of the touchpad and up to the keyboard. i can feel the heat coming through the last row of keys. the bottom is also extremely hot way more than the top and in the area that says "hp protect smart" which i think is where the hard drive is.
just downloaded everest and the temperature is running at 70 C / 158 F.
i havent changed anything on my machine and am wondering where the heck this is coming from and why. ive barely had the laptop over a year and this problem started maybe a month ago.
what can i do? there doesnt seem to be dust in the fans from what i can tell from the outside, but maybe i should take it apart and clean it anyway?
    anyone got any ideas?

just as an update, i ended up taking it into best buy (geek squad) because i have a 2 year service plan with them. they did a bios update and it seems to have somewhat fixed the problem. i no longer have the noisy fans (weird) and the temperature has gone down somewhat. it is still warmer than id like but i think im out of options here. probably will buy a laptop cooler soon. its also horrible that while searching for a fix myself to the heating issue, i couldnt find any hp documentation regarding a bios update possibly fixing this problem. i could of done the update myself instead.
i gotta say though, the lack of support from hp is horrible. not only was this a problem that occured (conveniently) 2 weeks after the 1 year hp warranty ran out but now my left touchpad button is basically falling off too. i had another hp a few years back and the harddrive on that laptop died 1 week after the warranty ran out. how convenient for hp.
i am in serious doubts if i ever want another hp.

  • I'm getting really annoyed with the Mac.

Don't mean to offend geniune Mac fans here, but I'm just getting really annoyed with the Mac.
I purchased my Mac mini (late 2012) in May of 2013 - so it's about 4 months old. I don't have a lot of software on it, mainly the Adobe Creative Suite, and development tools (Xcode, and web development software).
The mini has this annoyance where, every so often it just freezes. It usually happens during when the screensaver is running, or when the monitor goes into standby and I try to wake it up. First the screensaver runs for 15 minutes. Sometimes it happens (it's random) that the screensaver "stalls" and the mac freezes. If it "survives" the screensaver, then after 15 minutes my monitor goes into standby mode. Sometimes when I wake up the monitor, I get the login window, I log in, and then I find that the Mac just froze.
A few days ago I've updated to 10.8.5. Now these freezes are happening more often. The mac freezes just whenever, regardless of screensaver or not. There was a time when I had ReadKit running, displaying an article. I went to the kitchen, when I came back the mini was frozen as ice. No other program was running (I mean program that I started).
Other times I had Chrome open at youtube. It was not playing a video. The browser was just "parking" at youtube's home page. Same thing. I go away, come back, the mini was frozen.
Yet just a few days ago, I had no user started application running. None. I leave the mini alone for a short while, come back, and I find the fan was running like crazy. The mac was not hot at all, but the fan went bonkers. It was loud and pumping air out for no reason.
At these times I can't do anything. Sometimes I can move the window, or move icons on the desktop, but I cannot force quit an app, neither I can start one. So things like going to the apps folder and starting terminal or activity monitor is not possible. I cannot select menu items from the Finder (or any other application) menus, so I can't restart or shut down the mac. The only thing I can do at these times is hold the power button for a few seconds to force the mac to shut down.
I'm coming from Windows. I built and upgraded my PC a few times in the past 7-8 years with newer and faster MOBOs, processors, memory, etc. I never had a bad component; I never had a blue screen; I never had my PC hang; I have never encountered any issues that would make my PC hang or froze or otherwise. I never had to troubleshoot software or hardware problems because they were/are just non existent. I'm not trying to start a war here about PCs and Macs. I'm completely natural.
But here I am with this "thing" that supposed to be so great and trouble free. I have already reinstalled the OS once during this 4 month old mac, but now it seems I have to do it again because ever since 10.8.5 things has gotten worse. This is really N-O-T what I expected from a Mac. I am just really annoyed, frustrated and everything else.
I was browsing these support forums and tried/looked at a couple of diagnostic steps, but none helped so far. I will attempt to reinstall the OS A-G-A-I-N over the weekend. If that doesn't help, then I will have to put this junk into the garbage can. (Well, figuratively speaking of course.)
    Mac mini late 2012
    OS X 10.8.5
    i7 2.6 GHz 8G
    Samsung S27B970 display via DisplayPort
    Apple extended wired keyboard
    Logitech LS1 laser mouse
    No other peripherials

Hey thanks for the feedback woodmeister! No, I was not aware of the hardware diagnostics!
So I have eagerly followed the isntructions, but I quickly found out what I have already experienced looking at other Apple "unhelpful" documentation. When I was referring in my OP that I've looked at other resources, the problem was that those "un-support" documents were out of date and the article indicated that Apple has retired them.
Now as far as the link that you sent (and the same can be found in the Help section of OS X as well, wasn't helpful either. Why?
In the document the bullets are as follows:
If you have a new Mac (mid-2013 or later), use Apple Diagnostics, which is built into your Mac.
If your Mac has OS X v10.8.3 or earlier, use Apple Hardware Test, which is built into your Mac.
If you updated your Mac to OS X v10.8.4 or later, use the system software disc or USB flash drive that came with your Mac.
Let's start with bullet #1. As far as I know (and correct me if I'm wrong) but I'm not aware of mid-2013 Mac minis. Mine is late 2012, so I guess I don't fit into bullet #1.
Bullet #2. I have OS X 10.8.5 so it means I don't fit into that bullet either.
Bullet #3. Yes, I did update to 10.8.4 or later (using 10.8.5) but neither a software disc nor a USB flash drive came with the Mac mini late 2012 model.
So what now? Another great "support" document that is confusing and/or not helpful. Nevertheless, I did give it a try. Disconnected my ethernet cable, hold down D, and rebooted. I get a "Choose Network Connection" drop down on the gray screen where I'm supposed to choose a Wi-Fi network. Why? This has not been mentioned in the docs. My Wi-Fi is disabled because I'm connecting through cable.
So I reconnected the cable. As soon as I did that, I got the message that ... let's see... my memory is failing me... the recovery mode or reinstalling the OS will begin... or something along that line. There was NO ANY INDICATION about any hardware test or diagnostics!
See, what I mean about frustration...?

  • IPhone 4 battery drains really fast and phone gets really hot

I have an iPhone 4 and since November 15 my battery has been draining really fast and gets really hot when I use the phone. When I try to charge the phone with my computer it doesn't charge, but only charges with the wall hub. I have tried deleting the email accounts, deleting all apps, restoring with the backup, restoring without the backup, and still no luck. I went to the Apple store and they briefly looked at it and said it had water damage by looking at the water damage indicator in the charging port. They told me I needed to pay $150 for a new phone. I don't recall getting my phone getting wet and it seems to work fine except for the battery drain and the computer charging problem. iTunes still recognizes the phone. I thought it was a battery problem so I ordered a new battery and replaced it myself and the battery was still draining fast. When I had the phone open the other water damage indicators were still white (no water damage), it was just the charging port indicator that was red (water damaged). Also, when I charge my phone with the wall hub it charges very slowly. I have ran out of ideas and I could really use some suggestions. Thank you.

i looked on the right there is no solution to my problem.i charge my phone to 100% after 2 hours with no usage at all of the phone with 3G off with wifi off with all applications shut down all notifications and locations off battery goes down to 50% when it was running on the older ios never had this problem in my iphone.when will this problem solved

  • I'm getting really frustrated and could use some help

    Hello there!
I'm  not sure what happened because when I plugged in my ipod today (I have an 8g ipod touch) everything was reset to the basics in itunes. My entire library was delted. Honestly I'm not really that upset by that as I was going to change out all of my music anyways.
    My problems are as follows:
I can no longer add more than 1 folder at a time.
-How can I change it to where I can add multiple folders again?
When I do add a folder it now automatically takes me out of the adding music on your ipod spot (sorry I don't know how else to describe that page) but it takes me out of there and automatically creates a playlist and starts to play the folder I just added.
-How do I stop it from creating playlists automatically? I absolutely hate playlists. I've never used them and I don't forsee myself useing them anytime           soon.
-How do I stop it from automatically playing the songs/folders I add?
-How do I stop it from taking me out of the ipod page and into the playlists page?
My ipod NEVER used to do any of this before so I'm really not sure why all of that changed and why I can't change it back.
    My audiobooks tab is gone.
-How do I bring this back so I can audiobooks again?
I've spent the last couple of hours sifting through manuals, let me tell you 138 pages is a lot to go through, forums and google and a lot of technical jargon and acronyms. All in all, I'm having a heck of a time finding exactly what I need to help me out and I admit I am starting to get really frustrated.
The other day it was so easy, add a couple of folders to the library, select them hit apply and VOILA all was golden. Today, not so much.

I'm still having troubles getting the audio books to appear.
    Heres what im selecting.
and then the books tab is still not appearing.
and then as far as adding folders here is what I am doing.
this was how i had it before. it gives me mroe control to choose what i want to add.
that is where i go to add the folder, like i did before.
    selecting the folder like normal.
then this box immediatly pops up. not allowing me the option to select and apply any music i may have added.
the music starts playing and it takes me to the playlist page.
but when i click on the ipod icon and go back into this area. the folder is there.
all the steps ive just shown you is how i have ALWAYS done this ever since i got my ipod. Ive never had any of these weird problems utnil today.
