Arch, Gnome, and half - missing letters

Greetings. I've installed Arch yesterday. CD is from Tuesday. It was updated each day. Gnome, GDM, X installed yesterday evening.
Today i installed xf86-video-intel and booted into gnome. Yay! i've logged in, but then i've saw the following situation:
half things are missing. If i go to gnome-tweak-tool and fix it, it works as charm - fully visibile words, etc - untill I reboot. I've tried everything, from VESA drivers on.
Anybody has idea what to do? Thanks for suport.

I had the same problem, when you press the icon for assistance and resize the font and then change first in the list and return to the same place I work all looks good, but it bored me, I always install all fonts, put patches for X11 detect and nothing worked.
I solved installing Xfce, I've always been a fan of Gnome, but I'm very happy with the performance of xfce despite being lightweight and fast they can run many applications because it is also based on gtk:) .... I leave you a screenshot of my desktop ....
But this post will continue to monitor to see if anyone can give the solution to our problem.

  • Arch, Gnome and Systemd

I'm sorry if this topic has been specifically covered elsewhere or if this is the incorrect place to ask this. I've searched and I've only found hints of it.
I'm wondering, since Gnome will now have Systemd as a dependency, if there has been any plan as to how Arch will handle it in the future. At the moment, there is a fallback mechanism to use Consolekit but I can imagine that eventually this will change. Since Systemd replaces a core component of Arch, the much-touted BSD-style init system, those wishing to install Gnome face a non-trivial task of switching to Systemd. While Arch admirably takes the stance of leaving it up to the user to handle and support him/herself in such tasks, I can nonetheless foresee maintaining good Gnome support to be an increasingly difficult task, both in maintaining a set of packages which are diverging from the Arch base in a profound way and in handling an increasing amount of non-self-helpers flooding the forum with questions.
So has any sort of discussion taken place? What can Gnome users expect in the future?
Yes, I know that Gnome doesn't fit Arch's KISS philosophy. Yes, I know that Systemd doesn't fit Arch's KISS philosophy. Yes, I know that some people here hate Gnome and love to take any opportunity to take a jab at the Gnome developers. Yes, I know that people want to complain about Lennart Poettering, Systemd, or PulseAudio. This question is strictly about future Arch policy regarding Gnome (if it is to change).

With the "it" refering to systemd, I think we have our answer. In other words, Gnome sould work fine hwere with systemd as a dependecy, and would not / should not conflict with the main arch init.

  • TS1702 I downloaded and iBook and half the letters are missing and then when I got to the end I was missing chapters. What should I do?  I don't want rebuy and download again

When I downloaded a book from iBooks, half the chapters where incomplete. What should I do?

Books can be downloaded again for free as long as you use the same Apple ID. You can read about it here to make sure, but books and apps are available everywhere as free downloads - from what I can remember.
After you confirm that you can download the book again, delete it and download it again. Go to the iBookstore and tap on the purchased tab. Look for the book and tap the cloud icon next to it to download it again.

  • Clear items half missing half clear

    Hello, all.
We have a customizing program to do the auto clearing. But now after we run it, it shown half not clear and half missing. How to reverify it?
    Kindly assist.

You probably need to start by establishing whether your problem is before or after creation.
To do that just open in Acrobat a file made before the problem started which you are SURE used to be good.
    - If it's still good, you have a problem with PDF creation
    - If it's gone bad you have a problem with PDF printing

  • Missing letters when typing on Satellite M105

I am using a Satellite M105-S3084 (Windows XP MCE) and have been unsuccessfully struggling with a keyboard problem since I first bought it. I tend to type fast, especially double letters and find that very often only one of the double letters shows up on screen. For instance "kk" would result in "k" only and similar missing letters even if not doubled. This causes a lot of wasted time correcting what I type.
I know that there are settings under Control Panel\Keyboard ("repeat delay" and "repeat rate") that permit setting speeds, but I have found them frustrating to use. I've tried both at various settings and still have a problem with missing letters. Maybe I just do not know which way to set which setting and I am just getting frustrated, or there is another setting somewhere else whic I do not know about.
Have others had this problem with mising letters while typing and found a solution?
    Thanks.

    Hello Jeff
If I am remembering well there was similar issue with Satellite L10 or L20, I can not remember. This was fixed with new BIOS version. US notebook models are not known to me but if you have time you can check Ask IRIS on US Toshiba page. There you can find many interesting documents.
    Check it under http://askiris.toshiba.com/ToshibaSupportSite/supportcentral/supportcentral.do?id=m1
Maybe you will be lucky and find something about your issue with keyboard.

  • Email received are missing letters and words

Recently I have noticed that some of the email I am receiving is missing letters and even words. It can make it hard to understand what was sent to me. It is not every email that does this. Has anyone else noticed this?

I am having the same issues. Also after installing Office 2008. Has anyone found a solution yet?

Internet explorer 11 missing letters on web page and can't type in a search

I just got a call about this exact issue today!
The person is at a Marriott hotel which uses some type of company called STSN for their internet connection via both Ethernet and Wifi.
    http://www.stsn.com/home.html
I'm waiting for them to call me back after trying every trouble shooting step I could think of. My only guess now is that it's Safari's pop up blocker blocking some kind of navigation or log-in window. I'm going to tell them to turn off pop-up blocker menu choice next.
After that it's turning off Java and Javascript to see if the have any affect.
Btw, they're experiencing this propblem on a TiBook G4. Also tried a new user account and two other pre-existing accounts but all had the same issue. Both with Ethernet and WiFi the problem remained.

  • Gnome applet Icons Missing

I installed a fresh arch linux on another pc.  I installed gnome and gnome-extras. There is one problem:
The icons on the "system tray" are missing. The applets are there but the icons are not shown:
I already rebuilt the hicolor and gnome icons (and re-logged) with no result. Am I missing something?

Ok here is something weird I found out.
I am using xorg without xorg.conf. Since I have a Voodoo3 card I installed the xf86-video-tdfx driver. After a xorg restart the icons are working but the mouse flickers when I move it and there are graphic bugs when restoring windows.
So I removed the tdfx driver and reverted to the vesa driver. The mouse does not flicker anymore but the applet icons are gone.

  • Gnome-window-decorator missing after upgrade

Last night I did a pacman -Syu from a archlinux cd installation, this fixed many many problems, but broke compiz-git, which I like so much.
Now when I run startxgl script, I get no window decoration in gnome, and gnome-window-decorator, the binary, is missing.
This makes me remember when we changed from gwd to cgwd, which, I think sucks.
Is there a way to fix this? I want my window decorations back
any help would be very appreciated

thanks for your reply twistedkaos, but I dont want to use cgwd, I want to use compiz-git
I tried copying my gnome-window-decorator binary from /bin from ubuntu dapper to /bin of archlinux, guess what? it worked perfectly. I just had to put "--replace" to the last gnome-window-decorator call of startxgl (the one that calls gnome-session).
Well, not so perfect so far, gnome hangs at startup loading gnome-wm or something like that (I can see it sessions > running) but if I click on "remove" and "apply", it reloads and everything works well (still no good log out, I have to kill my X)
Now it is not working because I messed up my session gnome config which I dont know how to clean back, but, its there, its not difficult, and its probably not the cleanest way to do it
I will upload the gwd binary somewhere so you guys can use it too
    here it is : http://webrepository.unlugar.com/arch/g … -decorator

  • Missing letters on keys

This is sort of a weird question, but is there any way to replace some of the keys on my ibook? I've had it for 13 months and it runs great, but weeks after I got it the letter decals on the keys began coming off. I'm missing roughly half the letters now and it's getting distracting.
And while I'm on it, is there any safe way to remove the black filth that accumulates around the mouse? I love my ibook but I feel like I should've gotten a Powerbook just for the superior shell.

    hey,
Do you have AppleCare? If you do, they can send you a replacement keyboard and it is super easy to install it. I haven't experienced this first hand but I know what you're talking about. About the black philth on the mouse, thats just from dust settling on your desk. Just wipe it up with a damp cloth. I used to get SO paranoid that if the slightest smudge or dust settled on my screen or exterior that my iBook was going to be messed with. I know that dust won't hurt it now though. Just periodically vacuum it up. Also, did you know that under your keyboard is a metal sheet that actually is the bottom layer for the removable iBook keyboard? That prevents dust from falling straight through the keys and onto your internal components like your AirPort card which is approximately under the "R, T, F, G, C, V" keys.
I sometimes wish I had a PB instead. Yes, they look cooler and feel cooler. However, can you justify the price by saving on an iBook G4 and upgrading it? Do you really need the brighter screen or advanced video out options? If no, you're fine with the iBook. Alright, good luck and take care.

  • [SOLVED]problem with GNOME and wireless connection

    Hi!
I'm new to Arch Linux, and have run into a few problems after installation.
My computer is a HP Pavilion dv6000.
I installed using "xf86-video-nouveau" driver, as i understand this is the best choice for "Nvidia Geforce Go 7400". Is it?
I also installed the complete "gnome", "gnome-extra", "gdm", "gnome-tweak-tool" and "gnome-shell-extensions" packages, but when I boot into gdm login, it automatically starts in fallback mode (the one who has "applications" and "places" in the top panel instead of "activities". What am I doing wrong here?
Btw, when I go to System settings - system info - graphics, there are three lines; "Driver", "Experience", "Forced Fallback Mode". "Driver" line only says driver, and is blank after. "Experience" line says "Fallback".  "Forced Fallback Mode" is set to OFF.
Also, I cannot figure out how to get my wireless network set up correctly.
When i open System Settings - Network, I get an error saying System network is not compatible with this version.
Any help with this woill be greatly appreciated!

-dri driver worked. But if the NVIDIA driver works better, I should probably consider using that one.
I tried to install the NVIDIA binary driver, but when i tried to run
    # chmod -X NVIDIA-Linux-x86-290.10.run
    # ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-290.10.run
I got a message telling me to close x first.
    How can I do this?
Ho ho ho buddy, I see you're trying to install the nvidia driver from the website. Have another look here:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nvidia#Installing
the drivers are available through pacman Installing the driver through pacman will automatically take care of removing things that conflict and installing things you need to ge t the NVIDIA driver to work.
NVIDIA _might_ be better, 3d support in nouveau is still somewhat experimental and nouveau doesn't have all the power management features yet. It'll be something to experiment with. Have a good read of the NVIDIA and NOUVEAU wiki articles

As for the wireless issue, I googled around a bit and found that the driver I need is ilw3945.
    I added this to /etc/rc.conf:
    DAEMONS=(...ilw3945...)
as it seems the drivers are included in udev.
However, when i try to open System Settings -> Network, it says
The system network services are not compatible with this version.
So I'm getting a little restless to find out what I can do to get the wireless network configurated properly, and how I can do it.
    Any ideas?
First I think you've fundamentally misunderstood something. Drivers for linux come in module form, not in DAEMON form. A DAEMON is an application that runs in the background (sound server, network service, etc etc).
ilw3945 would have to be added to your MODULES section in /etc/rc.conf if that is the module you need.
humor me and post the output of this command:
    $ lspci

Hi to all, i have a problem with Gnome and D-Bus

1>then i can't promote garnome on this forum??
yeah you can, but not as a solution to gnome related problem in arch. cause this doesn't resolve anything.
2>You don't have to, garnome2.14.2.1(481kb) download the patches and patch it automatically, just change install dir to /usr
(ONLY if you are using console-linux who want gnome a try). of course there is need small arch related patch.(in my experience 0)
eh, i haven't got a clue what this means, putting patches upstream means they will get include in gargnome and upstream releases. i only tried to say we put a lot of our free time in gnome for arch.
2-1>Well said, so choice is the each one's freedom.
and this category isn't arch, this is Desktop Environments,
i installed arch, BUT THAT DOESN'T MEANS I SHOULD USE gnome FROM ARCH!!!
agreed, but again then we won't support your desktop.
    ARCH != gnome
3>some bug stuff about Xorg-7.0, include mine

ah bugs.archlinux.org so it can be fixed.

  • GNOME and KDE file associations

    Hi,
I like to use KDE and GNOME, alternating between them. Sounds crazy, but I like both. Please, let's avoid the "GNOME vs. KDE" discussion, right?
My problem is: I like to use different file associations when I'm using GNOME or KDE. For example, I'd like to associate text files with gedit in GNOME and with Kate in KDE. But if I associate text files to gedit in GNOME, when I run KDE and open a text file it opens gedit. If I associate them with Kate in KDE, when I'm using GNOME it'll use Kate as its text editor.
Some time ago I could have both desktop environments without this mess. Can I have this behaviour back?

Yeah, I got tired of Evolution not knowing about opening *.docs in openoffice.  After several hours of research, the key is the /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache,  /opt/gnome/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache, and the MimeType fields in the *.desktop files.  The mimeinfo.cache in /usr was empty and the /opt one had gthumb and other apps but no OO:
    [MIME Cache]
    application/x-gnome-stones=gnome-stones.desktop
    image/jpeg=gthumb.desktop
    application/postscript=ggv.desktop
    ...snip...
That's a lot of blather to say that the fix for Evolution/OpenOffice was to add the proper MimeType entry to /usr/share/applications/ooo645writer.desktop:
    MimeType=application/vnd.ms-word;application/msword
and then run "update-desktop-database".  Problem solved.
Another problem is that within Evolution it says an attached doc is a "application/msword" and not a "Microsoft Word Document".  Unfortunately this is because freedesktop.org decided to use application/vnd.ms-word instead of application/msword like the rest of the world.  If you check the vnd.ms-word entry in /usr/share/mime/packages/freedesktop.org.xml it defines an alias msword but the new mime system doesn't appear to recognize aliases yet.  The solution I used was to rename the entry to msword.  Another possible solution might be to remove the msword alias from the vnd.ms-word entry and create a new msword entry based on the vnd.ms-word one.  Then run "update-mime-database /usr/share/mime".  Hope that made sense.
I think the defaults.list is part of the previous GNOME MIME setup cause I don't have one and I'm not experiencing any problems.  For other apps check for the associations in the mimeinfo.cache's and if missing add the MimeType's to the app's *.desktop.
