Arch GUI tools & prog. language

For my information, what language is easy to learn and makes nice GUI application?
farphel wrote:If your end goal is to provide gui tools for Arch, then you need to first examine what languages/toolkits are included in 'base' so that your gui tools could be included in the mini-iso.....
If your guis are post-install, and you don't care if they were to make it into base/current, then the sky's the limit.
It would be interesting to know....
1. what system tools other distros are using.
2. what tools could be useful for Arch and also if possible to modify if needed.
About programming language for Arch apps, in general, can it be said...
1. Shell Script for Arch CD installer
2. Curses and Tcl/Tk for base
3. Any language for post-install
About Python, is it possible to run a "stand alone" application without installing the python package? .... to develop apps to include the reguired python files and libs.

rasat wrote:1. AL's wxPython is depended on wxGTK, for what purpose? In my compiled wxPython, I didn't install wxGTK.
AFAIK, wxPython only requires GTK+ 1 and it's dependancies. wxGTK shouldn't be needed.

2. Would it be possible to make one "mini" Python package for running Py apps only? Why I am asking, its not "fair" to ask users to install the 7.2MB Python package just for the sake of running an Py application e.g. 100KB.
Maybe, but I doubt it. AFAIK, most of what you'd "cut" would be modules which other programs need. There are some demo programs, but I can't imagine that they take up more then 500K.
Plus, if your doing a GUI, your going to pull large dependancies anyway.

Both GTK+ 2 and QT are rather "beefy" as-is. And we're not even going to talk about KDElibs. Compared to 15M for QT proper, 7M for Python isn't exactly massive.
Also, if someone's going for a GUI, they'll most likely have GTK+2 or KDE already installed, and thus it'd make Python's size small in comparison. Compare 7M for Python to XFree at ~54M, most of which IIRC is taken up in drivers and locale files which most users will never use, and it's not even close to being the largest dependancy.
Plus, with Python you gain the benefits of more stable code that can be developed in a very fast manner. It's fairly hard, IMHO, to quantify that and judge it against the relatively small size of the Python package proper.
Besides, if more people would start using Python (like they should ) installing it "for one app" would be mitigated.

  • 10g docs and GUI in other languages besides English

We are deploying Oracle in several sites in the world, and would like have each country with their own language (and have local DBAs support that instance in their language).
I have almost all the information we need to deploy (character sets, etc.), but can't find clear information on these two topics:
What specific languages are available for the online documentation-- I have only found docs in English (e.g. tihs documents http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14225/ch1overview.htm#sthref40)
What specific languages are available for the GUI tools-- the docs indicate that there are "some" languages with translated messages and user interface for the utilities (http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14225/ch1overview.htm#sthref40), but the list in table A-2 (here http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14225/applocaledata.htm#i634673) only mentions the ones where the "messages" have been translated.
    Thank you!

What specific languages are available for the online documentationAs far as I know, general documentation is only available in English but I have never found an official rationale for this decision. However if you attend some Oracle trainings in your country, you may have training material in your local language.

  • Oracle Performance monitoring GUI tools

    hi,
We have Oracle 10g / 11g database on which SAP instances are running. Whenever, any bottleneck issue, I used to logon as ora<sid> and look for processes / space/ file system space etc.
Wondering, if any Oracle GUI tool available to monitor. I am not very familiar with oracle tools.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Also you can use the Oracle tool - Oracle Enterprise Manager Database Control. The Oracle Universal Installer installs Oracle Enterprise Manager Database Control when you install the Oracle software. Enterprise Manager Database Control provides a Web-based interface that you can use to manage your Oracle instance and database.

  • GUI Tool for Image Analysis (delimited ascii file)

i've created a Java GUI Tool for Image Analysis. It does length calculation and locate the coordinate of centroid of an image...the problem now is how do i save the results in a delimited ascii file??

Create a FileOutputStream, use that to construct a PrintWriter, then use the PrintWriter as you use System.out. Print out the data, then append the delimiter manually after each set of data.
To get the file, the simplest ways would be to hard code an output file name or at least have a text field so the user can enter it. If you want it to look more professional, use a JFileChooser.
    I hope this helps!

  • Swing Coding Advice -- HandCode vs. GUI Tools

What are the Pros and Cons of "hand-coding" vs Using a Tool ?
All of my training and self-study has NOT included a GUI Tool. While I'm comfortable with Java, I've never used a GUI Tool (like Visual Age, JBuilder, Visual Cafe). I'm confortable with Layout Managers and the Event Handling model.
I find tools un-intuitive and a daunting learning curve.
I fear learning a tool will distract me from increasing my real world expertise with JFC/Swing, yet I don't want to miss out on significant productivity gains.

    gains.Hi Ron,
here my opinion: using a GUI-tool might be easier in some straight-forward-situations, like just draging and droping some components to the positions where you want to place them and you see directly how it looks like - wysiwyg! While handwise you have to create them, add them, define the positions, and compile and run the program to see how it looks like.
BUT also with a GUI-tool you must still be aware of LayoutManagers, EventHandling etc. to use all the advantages Java offers. And there I made the experience that our Gui tool (I used Visual Cafe some time ago) was quiet uncomfortable. I would have needed more learning and training for using the tool than for Java itself... that's not the purpose of a tool!
So: if you are comfortable with handwriting, just continue with that!!!

  • Snow Leopard Server - Apache GUI Tools?

    From AlanGP,
I have just started with SL Server and have some limited experience with HTML based websites. I can reach the SL Mini Mac webserver from the internet but it is very Apple Mac and I would like to change the look and feel of the home page. I understand that there are GUI tools for Apache on the server. Where do I find them?
    Thanks
    Message was edited by: AlanGP

The server GUI tools won't help you design your web site.
The GUI tools for Apache hinge around Server Admin and are geared towards setting up your server more in terms of virtual hosts (multiple sites running on the same server), server configuration (server modules), logging, etc.
It won't help you design your site content. For that you need some other tool. There's no GUI web design tool bundled with Mac OS X, only text editors.

  • MySQL GUI tool in Solaris

Hello, I am new working with solaris, and I would like to know if there is any GUI tool for MySQL working for Solaris OS.
Please feel free to reach me at [email protected]
    Thanks

mediis is correct, in that the MySQL distribution doesn't have a GUI. As gcc does come with Solaris, and these tools are fairly easily compiled (I have put MySQL Adnimistrator and PHPmyAdmin on some of my S10 systems). However, Solaris has the open-source tool Webmin, and you can somewhat manage MySQL with Webmin. If you are looking for a simple management tool, this might work for you. Otherwise, I suggest compiling MySQL Administrator.

  • Any GUI tool for JSF?

Does anyone (IBM, SUN, Borland, open_source, etc) have GUI tool or GUI editor for building JSF?
*Can I receive this forum at my email?

I just got back from the JavaONE convention in SF and Sun had a demo of an IDE project that is in progess. It was called "Project Rave". It looked like a really great tool. It had drag and drop components for a database query, web services functionality, and all of your JSP form objects. I was really impressed and think it will be a great tool. They also said that it would eventually support Java Rich Client development as well. They said it would not be available until Fall or the end of the year.
