Arch hangs/freezezs like Windows XP

i have installed Arch i686 on my AMD64 without any trouble. then i did "pacman -Syu" and read all the output/messages after installation and rebooted. no problems. sometimes Arch hangs/freezez like Windows . then it stops responding to any action i take, the only option is to manual reboot from Cabinet button :-(
e.g. i give it a command "ls" and hit Enter then it just hangs in there at command line. this i not specifically related to "ls", sometimes it hangs while i am trying to login. i login my name and Enter and it hangs/freezes like if waiting for some more input. one more thing i have noticed is, then i can go to another tty using "C-A-F2/F3/Fx" and when i try to login there, it hangs there too. it means whenever it hangs then all ttys get into the problem. i have already installed Arch from this this CD 2 times earlier without any problem.
i tried to install CRUX but i get a message, something like this, during installation. i posted it because i thought, it would help in solving the problem:

what is the trouble? i have 80GB Serial-ATA Seagate.

or you put a new sata cable on the same port?

I use vim as text editor, but maybe exists plugin for create keybindings in vim like windows notepad?
Ctrl + A, S, Z, X, C, V, F for text operation
Shift + Up, Down, Left, Right for text selection

This command starts vim in insert mode (tested and works on my arch installation):
$ vim -c startinsert
You can add the files to open and other options to the command.
Ctrl-s has too many mappings used in terminals for me to suggest using it as a 'save file' shortcut. The mappings below use Ctrl-o to save a file.
:map <C-o> :w<CR>
:imap <C-o> <Esc>:w<CR>i
By default in vim, Shift-z + Shift-z will save changes to the file and exit. Hold down the Shift key and press 'z' twice. I don't think that's too hard to remember.
I can sympathize with you for your difficulties as you switch from one operating system to another. I don't like your solution but we all make our own customizations to vim.

Getting Consolas font to look like Windows

Hey all,
I just got Arch installed with KDE, and I must say I'm liking it a lot because Arch seems like the only distro with up to date versions of chrome and gcc. But I digress.
I'm having problems getting fonts to look good. I've tried following the directions on the Fonts page on the wiki with regards to subpixel rendering (which might end up not being the problem, I don't know), but it hasn't helped. In particular, my favourite font, Consolas, looks pretty bad on Arch.

The Arch version isn't nearly as smooth, and it looks especially bad in the console (Konsole) and in my web browser (Chrome). Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Thanks.

Z68-GD65 Hangs on Starting Windows because of USB Controller. Any fixes?

Issue: During Windows 7 (32 bit & 64 bit) installation and startup, the computer hangs at "Starting Windows". It will display a pixel or two of the first red part of the logo animation and then stop.
System Setup/Hardware:
Mobo - Z68-GD65
RAM - Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB)
HDD - Corsair Force 3 60GB SSD
CPU - Intel i5-2400 (Sandybridge)
PSU - Antec Earth Watts 650W
GPU - Asus Geforce GTX 560 Ti
Cause: I found that when I disabled the USB Controller completely from the BIOS, everything worked smoothly (install & startup). If I left the USB Controller enabled and just disabled the Legacy Controller, I would be left with a blinking DOS cursor after POST.
This is an issue because both keyboard and mouse are USB. I had to borrow an old PS/2 mouse to even install windows.
Troubleshooting tried:
- Tried disabling EVERY (and yes, I mean every, I've rebooted this thing 50+ times [stopped keeping track]) setting that can possible be disabled individually
- Tried unplugged every component except: board, hdd and dvdrom
- Tried swapping RAM
- Tried swapping HDDs (to Sata non SSD)
- Tried swapping PSUs
- Tried changing Windows 7 install discs (one 32 bit, one 64 bit)
- Tried removing all motherboard connections (FP audio, FP usb, etc, everything but 24+8pin power)
- Tried clearing CMOS and resetting BIOS
- Tried enabling USB Controller via ClickOnce BIOS and restarting
- Tried fully updating Windows 7 and all drivers (video, mobo, etc)
- Tried updating BIOS with Live 5
- Tried leaving only USB 3.0 Controller enabled and plugging mouse/keyboard into those ports (blue on back)
- Tried Windows repair
- Tried Windows boot logging (got to file CLASSPNP.sys)
- Tried booting to Safe Mode
- Tried banging head on wall (this was successful in giving me a headache, but not booting the computer)
I mainly list the troubleshooting above to convey the amount of frustration I've had with this board.
The USB Controller simply seems bad or the driver (or the way the board interacts/loads the Windows driver) is bad. I must have USB on my computer.
If I need to RMA, please let me know, however, I would hope there is a solution out there to fix the USB Controller issue. The RMA deadline is the 20th, I hope I can get an answer one way or the other before this as if there is no answer, I will be forced to RMA and go with another product from a different manufacturer (I really wanted to get over my "Asus only" attitude and try you MSI! I've been impressed up until this point, please don't let me down).
Please help?

I was having the exact same issue with a new build (Mobo MSI Z68-GD65-G3). I had been banging my head against the wall for a while and then I came across your post. Subsequently, I disabled the USB controller in BIOS and my Win 7 install ran fine (minus the fact that I had no access to my USB keyboard and mouse). I set the BIOS back to default settings which re-enabled the USB controller, and thus was able to re-plug the mouse and keyboard in after the windows loading screen, where the 4 colored orbs come together to make the Windows flag. This seemed to do the trick.
Now the problem is, everytime the computer restarts (i.e. for any Windows updates), it freezes at the same point it would during the installation. This is again assuming the mouse and keyboard are still plugged into the rear panel USB ports. Which of course they're going to be!
Anyone with a recommendation as to how to fix this? Is this a hardware defect or can it be solved with some sort of driver or firmware update? I'm at a loss... but I certainly shouldn't have to unplug all USBs before starting the computer, that's just nuts.
I'm considering RMA as well, but would like to see if any MSI staff members or forum members might be able to share their insight.

My P62290ea will usually start OK in the morning, but sometimes it hangs on the Windows screen.

I am running Win7 home Premium 64bit SP1. When I start up in the morning usually the PC loads OK. However, often it hangs on the Windows screen and I have to reboot and sometimes it is OK and other times I have to go via the HP srart-up screen. This inconsistency is very confusing and frustrating. Can anyone help?

You have a frustrating issue to troubleshoot because of the randomness. We can try troubleshooting, but hard to say if it fixes it or not for a while.
Try putting the computer into a clean boot state, you can find instructions on this forum thread, http://goo.gl/w3KQH.
Once in a clean boot state see if you can get the problem to happen
If it does then we know it's not a program that is starting up causing the issue instead it is likely a driver.
If it doesn't then one of the programs that was booting when Windows boots was causing a conflict, the trick is figuring out which one.

That has never been a feature of Mac OS X, but I believe there was some kind of third-party software that could add that capability. i don't recall what its name is, but you must have had that installed, and it either isn't installed anymore (perhaps removed as incompatible?) or is not working properly in Mountain Lion.

Windows 7 Install Hangs at "Starting Windows" Screen

Having problems installing Windows 7 Home Premium from DVD on a newly built computer. When I run the Windows 7 Home Premium disc I get past "windows is loading files..." and then freeze on "starting windows" just after I see 4 little colored balls in the center of the screen.
Here's what I've got:
Monitor: Samsung T260HD 25.5in Rose/Black LCD w/ATSC
HDD: 2 x Seagate 1.5TB Serial ATA HD 7200/32MB/SATA-3G
Memory: Corsair Dominator 6144MB PC12800 DDR3 1600MHz (3x2)
DVD: LG 22X DVDRW SATA
Motherboard: ASUS P6TD Deluxe Intel X58 Socket LGA1366 MB
Power Supply: Corsair 950w 80 Plus Power Supply
GPU: 5850 is backordered, so am using an old Nvidia (6400 GT?) to attempt to install Windows
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
I've done lots of research and tried:
1. Using a PS2 keyboard/mouse
2. Disabling USB in bios
3. Disabling just about everything else in bios
4. Tried w/ 2MB, 4MB and 6MB ram
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It seems that you have not ever tried installing other systems like Windows XP and etc on your new built computer. It is difficult for us to determine if the computer actually works.
In addition, since the installation process has not even passed first stage to copy the installation files to the memory. The issue is likely to be caused by incompatible hardware such as the incompatible motherboarad, RAM and etc. Therefore, it is strongly recommended contacting with the hardware manufacture or the retailer to help you check the issue cause you may spend too much time on testing the issue by yourself.
Or you can also try installing Windows 7 on one hard drive and plug in one memory card (2MB, 4MB and 6MB respectively) to check if it works.
NOTE: During the installation, please unplug all the unnecessary hardware devices to avoid any conflicts.

Windows 7 clean install hangs at starting windows

I have HP pavilion p6-2462eo with preinstalled windows 8 and I’m trying to install windows 7 from a disc.
I get stuck on the "Starting windows" screen.
I have disabled the secure boot in bios and changed all settings that i can think in bios but is the same problem.
I have also booted from an external dvd drive but is the same problem.
I wont to replace windows 8 completely and not to make dual boot.
Anyone have some ideas?

HP doesn't recommend the installation of Windows 7 nor will it support the installation of Windows 7 on a Windows 8 computer. HP will not provide drivers and Windows 7 drivers may not be available for the hardware in the computer. Additionally, Windows 7 may not support some of the hardware or software features for the computer.
You may wish to try "Start8" or other programs desgned to make Windows 8 look and feel more like Windows 7.
However, if you absolutely feel you must install Windows 7 on your computer, please post a list or photo of all the device in the Windows "Device Manager", including "HardwareID" infomation for our review.
Create the HP Recovery Discs before modifying or changing ANYTHING.
You will need to DISABLE "Secure Boot" and ENABLE "Legacy Support" in the BIOS and save those changes.

I have a OSX Lion with an iPhoto app. I would like to put two photos on a single page like Windows Paint. What's a good app for this? Is there a Windows Paint app for Mac or something similar?

You can print two photos on a single page with iPhoto, you can put two photos on a single page with Pages, Word or any word processor. Or are you trying to edit two photos together?

Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate. You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

Windows 8 libraries don't sort/group by metadata (like Windows 7 could)

One of the great things about the Windows 7 libraries was the way they let you group and sort the stuff in them. For example, in the music library you could sort by artist, and it would group them by albums (see attached).
By contrast, the Windows 8 libraries (at least on my computer - if I'm doing something wrong let me know...) are completely crippled. In particular:
files that are stored in subdirectories are only ever shown by folder - the libraries view will not sort these by any metadata (such as date, album, artist, author, ...); and
even files that are in one of the root directories indexed by the library will not be sorted and grouped as usefully as in the Windows 7 libraries. You get to choose one thing to group by, and one thing to sort by. And every view shows every song - no nice
collecting into albums or dates as in the Windows 7 view.
(see attached - in this picture the 8 files listed are in C:\Users\[me]\Music, while the remaining files are in subfolders).
Is there any way to make Windows 8 libraries work like Windows 7's?
(In the case of music, I note that the Xbox Music Metro app has no difficulty sorting the library in various ways (although, from memory, it didn't work when it was originally released) - but the photos app doesn't and I'm not sure about videos).
(As a subscript, I note that the screenshots in this thread seem to suggest that Windows 8 at least once had the same functionality as Windows
7, albeit that there is no cover art shown in that pic. So it's entirely possible that it's something I'm doing wrong (but I have no idea what...).

Based on my test, we can use the following setting to sort by artist.
If you cannot see the option, please restore the Default Libraries to check the result.
1.Open an Explorer window.
2.In the Navigation Pane, right click on Libraries, and click on Restore Default Libraries.

The answer is, Yes. If you enabled Find My Mac, then you could track it or erase it using your iCloud.com webpage and clicking on Find My Phone after signing in.

I have bootcamp installed with a copy of windows on a macbook pro. When I'm in the windows mode the keyboard will not function like windows. It is still set up for apple.
