  • My USB Ethernet connection drops when another USB device is plugged in?

I have a MacBook Air (Mac OS X 10.6.7 but it happened with older OS versions, too) and have a few issues with my wired ethernet connection. (through USB Ethernet adapter).
    1. When I have the USB adapter plugged in when I wake the MacBook Air up it won't be recognised (have to plug it in after wake up)
    2. (that is more annoying). When I have the Adapter connected and I plug in another USB device (like a USB stick) into the other slot, my USB EthernetConnection drops! Only once I unplug the adapter and plug it back in it works again.
Is there maybe a firmware upgrade that should be installed or something??
    Does anybody have an idea???
    Thanks

Hi, you can upgrade the Firmware for the wrt54g router under the system screen.
you will find the "upgrade Firmware" tab under the system screen.
Once the Firmware has been upgraded you can then reset the router by holding and pressing the reset on the back panel for 30seconds. And then reconfigure the router again.

  • How do I make Lion wake up when a USB device is plugged in?

I'm having this issue on a MacBook Air, but I assume it would occur on a MacBook Pro as well.
What I want to do is to use my MacBook with an external display, and have the lid open so I can use the keyboard/trackpad, but have the MacBook display turned off. There are two obstacles to doing this under Lion:
    1. You can start the laptop in clamshell mode with an external display attached, but opening the lid will make it go out of clamshell mode and turn on the MacBook display, going into dual screen mode.
    2. Since I don't have a wireless keyboard, the trick that I was using in Snow Leopard to wake up my MacBook was to plug in a USB device. This doesn't work anymore in Lion.
Issue 1 has been resolved by this post:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16059565#16059565
But I'm still looking for a fix to issue 2. Any help would be appreciated!
PS The solution to issue 1 in the thread above recommends running this command:
    sudo nvram boot-args="iog=0x0"
I would imagine there's probably some kind of command that will fix issue 2 as well?

Are there any web interfaces for LKML? I dislike mailinglists; the last one I subscribed to randomly stopped sending messages to me after about an hour. I might try usenet; there are some good-looking groups on there I think.
Also, I'm sure there has to be a way to do this outside of udev. I mean, if udev can be made to work without using like 30% CPU (which I'd imagine would be what would happen if it polled every 1 second, which is what I'd want it to do), I'll use it, but what about thinking outside the box a little?
I mean, my first thought was to write a kernel module that responded to dmesg at the kernel level; dmesg doesn't update all that often, and I could run through all the lines I recieve and look for, for example, my PCI ID and a signature telling me if it was added or removed. I just have no idea how to do that.

  • LAN disconnects when removing USB device.

Hi. So I have a concern about my fairly new MSI board. Model: Z97 Guard-Pro. Sometimes when I plug/unplug a USB device from the backpanel 3.0 ports (lowest down set), my LAN will disconnect. My router connects to the mobo via an Ethernet cable which becomes disconnected. However the LAN does not disconnect when I INSERT a USB device, only SOMETIMES when disconnecting. Nevermind, it disconnects when insert and disconnect.
I then have to remove the Ethernet cable and plug it back in for it to recognise the Ethernet device. Sometimes it wont even recognise when doing that. I have to disable the adapter in Windows 7 and the re-enable for it to recognise. What can cause this issue?

Quote from: flobelix on 01-March-15, 19:05:06
Does the same happen when you just just touch the lan connector?
Just tried it now. Jiggled it left and right with some play in movement and it disconnected in Windows but that seems to be because the contacts aren't touching. Pushed it back in and it reconnected. However with the USB issue when I take the cable out and put it back in, sometimes the LAN adapter will still say disconnected. The LAN cable is not touched in any way and it will DC.

  • How do I fix firefox, which hangs when plug in container starts?

Firefox hangs or freezes & I can't click on anything when plug in container shows up (see it in task manager).

There are some compatibility issues between the latest Flash player and some Firefox add-ons or settings. Flash 11.3.300.257, in particular, can cause crashes. Please check out these articles:

  • Mac restarts sometimes when connecting usb device

Any ideas why my intel imac is randomly rebooting when attaching a usb device?

Disconnect and reset the SMC and PRAM, if the action continues after the resets replace the USB hub with another, the new one should be a powered USB hub. Any number of USB hubs will work, I'd recommend shopping on Amazon for examples. DO NOT use a bus powered hub.

  • Zen Xtra- Installed drivers, but when connected, "USB Device Not Recognized&qu

Hello- I'm trying to install a Creative Zen Xtra mp3 player on Windows XP. I installed all of the drivers and software, but when I connected the player, I got an error from Windows saying the "USB device is not recognized". I tried downloading all the new drivers and software from Creative, but it's no use. I was hoping maybe someone would have the inf file so I can install the driver manually. I can't find it on the installation CD or online anywhere. Thanks for any help!?~Jim

  • 1 day old MBP, MASSIVE cpu usage when any USB device is plugged in?!?

I just purchased a brand new MBP 2.2
If I plug anything into any of the usb ports my CPU starts clocking and within 10 minutes my system is running it's fans at full speed trying to keep it cool. This can be with no activity AT ALL. I can simply plug a USB thumb drive in and watch as the system gets hotter and hotter!
Has anyone heard of this and is there a solution. I had planned on booting and external USB drive to run a separate OSX install but this makes that impossible. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Kalel

Sorry, it was just taking FOREVER to index my USB drives. One drive is only 120GB and after almost 6 hours it still has 4 hours remaining! For reference it indexed my Firewire drive in about 15 minutes.

  • DIsk Utility Hangs When Formatting USB flash drive

I have a 4gb USB drive (Jetflash by Transcend) that's been usable formatted as FAT. I'd read that i/o would be a lot faster if I formatted as Mac OS Extended instead. In fact, I've done this with previous USB drives with success. When I try to reformat the drive in Disk Utility, it stalls at "Preparing to Erase." I've also tried going through Partition instead, but again, just stalls at the beginning. This is not a freeze or hang or spinning ball moment, but it will just sit there not doing anything. I can quit out of DU at any time. I've left DU alone, thinking this just may take a while, but it has stayed this way up to 3 hours. Suspiciously, there are no blinking lights on the usb drive during this process. I realize every USB flash drive must have different firmware that reacts differently to Macs and I may just be unable to Mac-format this. I've also taken the drive to other Macs all running 10.4.7 with the same results. Any ideas or workarounds will be appreciated. Thanks.

Update: I've tried on a 3rd mac, my g5/1.8 at home and plugged the USB flash drive to a powered usb hub. Now Disk Utility doesn't stall, but instead immediately states that it can't access the partition map. As the drive has public/private partition capability and also security features, I'm going to assume that's the reason for it to be only formattable as FAT. So now I'm looking for large capacity flash drives that are mac-formattable or find information that throughput is the same on a USB drive no matter how it's formatted.

  • Kernel Panic when plugging Firewire devices

I have a Kernal Panic each time I plug something in the Firewire ports. I already have tried many things to solve this issue, in vain (see here, in french : http://www.xrings.net/xrings/forum/viewtopic.php?t=216 )
If somebody has any suggestion... Thanks !

Thank you jeffdc, but I have done it.
In fact, I've done all the things I could think about : they are listed in the link referring to an other forum (in french) in the first topic of this discussion :
    http://www.xrings.net/xrings/forum/viewtopic.php?t=216.
I translate it here in english :
    MY MAC. Power PC G4 800 MHz 256 Mo. System : OS X 10.4.2.
ISSUE. Kernel Panic each time I try to connect any kind of device (HD, iPod) to any of my Firewire ports.
CABLES AND DEVICES. I changed external Firewire cables and devices to be sure that the problem was not coming from them. The kernel panic appears systematicaly after connecting to the Firewire ports, when the computer is switched on as switched off with a reset...
FIREWIRE PORTS. I followed the instructions from the Apple Support Site : disconnect evreything (USB and all ports), switch off and disconnect the computer from the electricity alimentation cable, wait a few minutes, reconnect, switch on. Nothing changed.
HARDWARE TEST. I reboot on the Apple Hardware Test CD. Results were OK. I've done it twice : first time with iPod connected on the firewire, second time with nothing connected on the firewire port. First time the result was OK : firewire was indicated as "present". Second time it was OK too : it was indicated as "absent". So the computer is able to detect the Firewire device... (PS. I don't have any trouble with the iPod, nor with the software nor with the hardware, when the connection is with USB, so the iPod and its software are OK.)
AUTORISATIONS. I have of course repaired the autorisations with Disk Utility. Nothing changed.
NVRAM. I have done a reboot in Open Firmware (pommealt+of) to reset the Non Volatil RAM (reset-nvram, reset-all). For no result.
CORRUPTED, HIDDEN FILES. I've tried to do a big cleaning with Applejack utility (corrupted files etc.) in Open Firmware again. Again in vain.
NEW SYSTEM ON A PARTITION. My HD is divided en three partitions, so I've done a reboot on the Installation CD from my old 10.2 System on a partition containing only documents. I made a reset on that System, done a few upgradings (System, iTunes and iPod), and now that partition is 10.2.8.
NEW FIREWIRE TEST ON THE REINSTALLED SYSTEM. Under that freshly reinstalled System 10.2.8, I tried again to connect the iPod on the FireWire port : Kernel Panic again.
QUESTION. So, what does happen ? Is it a software or a hardware issue ? Or an original bug in the 10.2 system ? What can I do ?
Thank you again to all the people who have already read my post and took time to give me an answer, and to all the people who will do it.

  • Itunes quits when plug in device

As of a few days ago, when I plug in any of my devices to sync with iTunes, and click on the device, iTunes immediately aborts.  I have tried rebooting, system updates, restored my devices on another computer, using different cables, restarting the devices (ipod touch, nano) and still nothing.  Any advice? suggestions?
    Thank you in advance

I figured out a fix for my issue. Go to my post on this problem and see if it applies to your situation, then give it a shot. The culprit for me appears to be iTunes version 8.0.2. Let me know if the fix works for you.

  • Internet hangs when plugged in

I've had my MacBook for a couple of months and I'm getting very frustrated. In the beginning, I could be surfing the net with no problem, and then the machine would just stop loading pages. I called tech support and went through all the normal things. After a few weeks, it got worse, to the point where the computer would state "You must restart your computer" over and over. I sent it in for repair and they replaced the hard drive. When I got it back, I got the same restart message. Tonight I was surfing all over with no problem for the first time until I plugged the battery charger in because battery was getting low. As soon as I plugged it in, it wouldn't load a page....after I unplugged it, back to normal. Does anyone know what would cause this? I'm really going crazy here. Thanks.

i have the exact same issue. it annoys me to no end. i really hope they fix this issue with an update soon.

  • Not activating external partition when plugging usb disk

    hi,
I have an external USB drive containing two partitions: is there a way to choose which partitions to mount (and which not to mount) at the moment of plugging the external drive in the mac's usb port?
I was thinking maybe there's some keyboard shortcut that prompts for “which partition(s) do you want to mount on the desktop”, but maybe there's not such thing...
    thanks in advance, ciao!

you can easily configure your own mac not to auto mount a partition on a particular external drive. but it won't help you with other macs. they will mount everything by default. if you have some privacy issues use encryption and put the sensitive data you may want to keep on that partition inside an encrypted disk image. you can make one with disk utility.

  • XP Machine hangs when plugging in PCMCIA-FBUS

I have a PCMCIA-FBUS card that I have been using in another machine and it works.  I have installed NI-FBUS Communication manager and Configurator on a machine running Windows XP.  When I insert the PCMCIA card, the machine just hang - I cannot move the mouse.  If I shutdown the machine and insert it while it's off and then power on the machine, the machine hangs at the XP Operating system splash screen.  Should I be able to use the Fieldbus PCMCIA card with a laptop running XP?
PS - The laptop is a Dell Latitude D600.

Looks like you may have the series ONE card that causes a problem with some new laptops.
There is a whole bunch of info on previous threads about this issue.
The solution is to get another laptop with a different PCMCIA controller chip or buy the new series TWO card.
The link below should get you to that thread.
