Arch is too simple

Arch is so simple it defies bugginess!! I haven't had to do anything but run pacman -Syu to maintain this thing for the past year!! What is the world coming too???
I even ran the pacman roulette and nothing (visible) broke!!
So....anyone got any scripts that need writing?

I am.
The pidgin wmii thing sounds interesting. I think I might have wmii installed somewhere....

If you miss buggyness you can always install VirtualBox and run Windows in a VM. Oh, I went there! Nah Windows is fine or whatever.

You are the only person that has noticed my avatar! You did spell Darlok wrong though...

Arch has made me too lazy to deal with stupidity.
You make it sound like it's a bad thing?

  • At 60 and totally confused w/version . Not  clue with how to use it and how to change it. My question - If a new version of i-tunes can be offered why not the older version as being a choice? Too simple or just impossible to do? I hate to drop i-tunes.

At 60 years of age and totally challenged by todays technology I find it impossible to understand i-tunes Version 11. Don' ask me to try to try go back to a earlier version ( as much as I would like to). I have read some of the advice given, as well as intended as it is, I don't understand the process. I don't want to drop i-tune but I will. I am sure my library is not as large as many others who use it but it is just as important to me. This really saddens me.
I do have two question if some one can help me. First, someone mentioned that if I go to previous restore point this might correct it. Yes or no? Secondly, if Apple can offer us a new version to download why can't they offer an older version to download. Too simple or impossible to do.

You can still drag and drop a song into a Playlist, in the same manner as before. Simply use the left-click of your mouse to select-and-hold the song (left-click-and-hold, don't release the click) and drag it to and then drop it (release the click) into the Playlist you want. (You cannot drop it into a Smart Playlist, you can only drop it into a Regular Playlist.)
... and here's a screenshot dragging the song "Lazy Orbit" into the Regular Playlist "Sat 4th June 2011". A small + symbol also appears in the drag, but it doesn't show up on screenshots. If the move is forbidden, a red slash through a red circle appears instead of the + symbol.
As for the Albums thing; in the Column Browser, right-click anywhere in the Column Browser header (see my screenshots in my previous post) and a menu appears. Deselect Albums on that menu to remove Albums from the upper Columns:
... and for the columns underneath (with the songs list etc.), right-click on that header bar and once again, deselect Albums from the menu that appears. The Albums column will then be removed from the lower columns list.

Well, my advice to you is: do not think about what you think iTunes cannot do, instead, think about what you want to achieve - and then work out how to achieve it.

  • IWeb too simple? Get Freeway!

For those who think iWeb may be too simple, please have a look at Freeway 4, either Pro or Express. Think of it like iWeb Pro, or more like Indeign/Pages/Photoshop in one program!
    I've made 3 tutorial videos:
Image editing with Freeway - 30 mb
overal use of Freeway - 28 mb
image output options - 4 mb
Please note, the server is not too fast unfortunately!

I'm starting to think it is a bit too simple myself.
I have a web page that i built with Yahoo
Sitebuilder on my PC, but i just switched to Mac.
I'm getting ready to build my website over again.
Can i use iWeb and upload it my Yahoo account? Can
this be done with iWeb or is it meant only for .Mac?
You can do a search for that topic , it's been covered.
I believe you can host on another server rather than .mac, but you have to publish to a folder on your hard drive first.

  • Insyde H2O BIOS is too simple

I have just purchased an Pavillion DV6 7014nr. Nice machine but the BIOS is a REAL disappointment. Firstly, I am not running Windows, so being able to tweak the BIOS is useful and sometimes required. I was dismayed to find, that the BIOS on this box does not expose any of the important features. In particular, I would like to see
    - SATA mode options
    - Option to select the default graphics card. For those of us how do not want to use Windows it's almost impossible to use the GeForce ard. It would be real nice if the BIOS were to allow the selection
I hope somebody from HP sees this and takes note (unfortunately in these days of "customer no-service", the "Contact-Us" button is nowhere to be found....)

i bought a dv5 a while back, maybe in 2008 or so, and that BIOS exposed quite a few more optios if I recall correctly. That's really too bad.
Any idea whom at HP one could send this complaint to directly?

  • Arch swaps too early/eagerly

Here is the output of free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
    Mem: 2025 1972 52 0 7 1212
    -/+ buffers/cache: 753 1272
    Swap: 1953 109 1843
Why is Arch swapping when there is still 1272 MB of free RAM left? As you can see it has already used 109 MB (& still growing) of swap. Why is it so? Just curious.

  • Arch freezing TOO much

    Hi,
I'm here praying for Arch do not freeze while I'm writing.
For a while, even with 2.6.24-x, I've had a lot of freezes with Arch. Now that I updated to 2.6.25-x, these freezes is making my machine almost unusable. I don't even know how to start to find the problem, thought I think it's one of those things: nVidia proprietary drivers, ACPI, APIC, firefox3 hogging 100% of my CPU using proprietary Flash or scrolling the screen (this makes me nervous, really), mplayer (and other CPU intensive tasks), etc.
Generally, if I don't use firefox or mplayer, I can use some apps for something like 5 min. When using these apps, normally the machine freezes in 1 or 2 min.
I already tried disable composing (XFCE), not using nv proprietary driver, disabling ACPI, etc. but all with no success.
I already saw a lot of messages in this forum and in other distros about GNU/Linux, but none of them are specific. And no, I can't go to console, restart X, anything. The only solution is to pull the plug.
My machine is new, a Compaq Presario V6000 series laptop. No memory problems.
    Any hints? Thank you.

    dav7 wrote:
Rather than poke at video drivers, I recommend you do something a little different: Don't use X.
Just live in the console for an hour, and soak test whether your system locks up.
Also, tip: when X freezes, it locks the display, mouse and keyboard since it hooks them at the hardware level (I think)... but it does not actually lock the system up! With this knowledge in mind, ssh to your laptop from another machine (assuming you have another one... if you don't, ringing a friend to ssh to your box for you comes to mind, lol) and kill X from there. If ssh doesn't respond (you aren't asked for a pass), I'm completely wrong and you do indeed have a locked up laptop.

There's an easier way: switching virtual consoles - if X locks up you should still be able to do that.

  • Copy Images: Too simple?

Ok, just spent several hours selecting a group of images from numerous directories. Now all I want to do is to copy these 150 images (Quick Collection) to an external hard drive.
Must be missing something, as drag/drop doesn't seem to be an option, and "Export" prompts me for Format, Quality, Color Space, Resolution etc. etc. I don't want to convert anything, I just want to move all these selected images to a new directory on this external hard drive.
    What am I missing?

    >"But to get back to my initial (and remaining issue) the only thing I want to figure out how to do is, after spending hours coming up with a custom selection, copy these files to an external hard drive or a folder of my choosing on my internal drive. "
    >"This has got to be DAM 101 stuff? "
I think the problem at this point in LR's development is that it is not a system-folder based DAM. LR is a black box - you import files into it and export files from it. During the Betas, LR did not organize imported data using a "folder" paradigm, it used "shoots". Now, it imports and maintains a folder structure that parallels the system's folders, but don't confuse this with a file browser. It just keeps a parallel universe of folders internally. At this point, LR does not "watch" its folders for changes in the system folders.
Inside LR's black box, you can move files from one LR folder to another, and LR will also move the actual files on disk. But you are asking it to "copy" which 1) doesn't follow the LR philosophy of maintaining one unique master file in its system, and 2) if the destination of the copy is outside the LR folder hierarchy, then LR can't handle it at this time.
Considering Adobe changed from shoots to folders from Beta4 to version 1, I expect the DAM functionality to be limited at this time. I would hope that in the future Adobe will extend its current LR folders vs. system folders to more closely match system folders. If they were to do this, then we'd have a better chance of getting watched folders and performing system file management. I would suspect that this is not as easy as it appears, since LR is tied to a database. Everytime you change folders and the files they contain externally, LR would have to do a lot of work to bring the database up to date.

  • Ethernet to wireless computer-too simple a solution?

Problem: old G3 iMac with Airport card gets great signal (15/15 pips) from AEBS. Next to it, newer iMac G5 with Airport card gets horrible signal (don't ask- hours of phone support and at Apple repair fail to find the problem- a problem featured in another post). Apple repair sending back G5 without a solution, and it is unuseable due to it's poor AEBS reception. Wife and kids very unhappy. Myself unhappy.
Question: Since the G3 gets such a great signal, could I just plug the two together w/Ethernet, so that the G5 gets it's signal from the G3? If so, does the G3 need to be awake (vs asleep, as the aging beast often is like an old cat)? What settings in Preference panels for both to set? Or should I bite the bullet and get another AEBS or Express to boost the signal. Thanks in advance,
    Jonathan

    Yes

No work out why the iMac G5 is getting a poor signal, if the G3 can get a good signal, then it is not a signal issue.

  • When is too simple, reasoning not to use Java?

I wish to write a small program which gives the user 6 or 7 options. When the associated radio button is selected, a different executable file will be executed.
Is this overkill to script this with Java? Should I be simply writing a batch file for this operation?

If "batch" means Windows scripting language, I'd say that's a poor choice.
Who really cares? A small app like that won't be hurt much by using a solution that's less than optimal.

  • Arch Linux as a WebServer

I want to set up a webserver with PHP and Mysql to host webpages. I have a couple of questions about Arch Linux.
1.) Is Arch Linux a good distro to implement a web server with PHP Mysql and Apache? Is it safe?
I had already chosen Freebsd but I still like Arch linux too much to ignore it.
2.) What type of firewall can I install? Is it possible to install a firewall on the same computer as the server, or is it best to dedicate another computer as a firewall.

ovihc wrote:1.) Is Arch Linux a good distro to implement a web server with PHP Mysql and Apache? Is it safe?
Sure. Any distro can generally be as safe as you make it. Since most arch users know their systems a bit better than some (how many fedora users know EVERY single package that is installed on their box?), they might have a better shot at securing it.
I would say that arch has some security permission issues, but most of these would only cause problems when there are user accounts on the box and you hand out ssh permission to them. For standalone services, these issues should not effect things.
2.) What type of firewall can I install? Is it possible to install a firewall on the same computer as the server, or is it best to dedicate another computer as a firewall.
Yes, you can have a firewall on the box itself. It is usually recommended to have both, depending on your requirements. For most instances, though, you would probably be fine to just have one on the box.
I just use iptables for my firewall. I just hand edit the rules in a bash script, then just save off the rules when I get them how I wan't them. If you are serious about firewalls, I recommend you just hunker down and get familiar with generating the iptables rules by yourself. If, however, you could really care less about firewalls, and only want simple security from your firewall, then by all means...there are firewall script generators out there for iptabes (gui pointy-clicky things).

  • How do I turn off Adobe Flash - too many sites have Flash Advertisements which slow the browser to less than a crawl.

Some pages have 3, 4, 5 or more adobe flash advertisements running at the same time, which slows the browser down tremendously. Then, if you happen to have multiple tabs open, the browser crawls to a virtual standstill, and many times, stops responding at all.
I would like to be able to choose whether or not a page can run flash content - not have it be something that runs all the time for every page, with the only option being to kill the plugincontainer process in taskmanager - which kills even the Adobe Flash items you might want to view; such as a youtube video.
Why is there not a way to turn Adobe Flash off in the browser? I have updated both Firefox and Adobe Flash but nowhere is there an option for turning it on or off depending on your needs.
Can a control be added to the Internet Options, that you can set, to have a page ask before it is allowed to run Flash Content? Having that kind of control would GREATLY enhance the enjoyment of browsing multiple pages.
Any information on how to do this, would be appreciated.

That seems to have done the trick. Thank you.
I guess it would have been too simple for it to have the same name. I was looking for Adobe Flash, whereas Firefox's add-ons manager page calls it Shockwave Flash.
Kind of hard to see an orange when the only label the box has is grape. :)
    I truly appreciate your help.

  • Make a simple "cut" edit in a singular video in CS6 (one video file as opposed to multiple clips).

I want to be able to do simple editing in CS6. I just spent three hours watching tutorial videos and reading help articles and this forum. I have never used an Adobe video editing program before. I normally use Windows Movie Maker, but it's too simple for my current needs. (Eventually I will learn effects.)
My problem is that the tutorial videos show examples where there is more than one "clip" being placed on the timeline. That seems to pre-set editing points. I only need to import one longer video file and then cut out frames that I no longer want in the video.
I have figured out how to set start and end points on the clip, as in at the actual beginning and actual end. But following every single method described (JKL, etc), I still cannot seem to edit frames out of the middle of my videos. I assume this is because I'm missing some very simple method for setting edit points. This is what I need to know.
I am an extreme novice with this program though I'm somewhat computer savvy. So please no jargon. I know nothing of this program. I did all I could to find my own answers before asking here, but if this is answered somewhere else, please direct me there. Thanks.

I'm in a similar boat -- editing family video recorded on Hi8 and captured into DV with a Canopus ADVC-300. I typically have a 2 hour clip in the timeline.  I'm separating these into clips with the razor tool, but sometimes I want to remove a garbled few seconds from within a clip.
Today I discovered something nifty: in Keyboard options, there are two items that don't have a key assigned:
Application->Ripple Delete->Ripple Trim Next Edit to Playhead
Application->Ripple Delete->Ripple Trim Previous Edit to Playhead
I assigned these to the Shift+] and Shift+[ keys.   Premiere didn't warn me about these keys being assigned already, so I guess it's ok.  At first, I used '}' and '{' but I'm afraid that it is too easy to accidently hit them.
When I play back in the timeline, at the start of the garbled area I want to remove, I hit Ctrl+K to add an edit point (the "out point", I suppose). Then I continue playing.   When I reach where I want the video to resume, I just press Shift+[ and Premiere ripple-deletes to the edit point.
This does leave me with an edit point, though.  I have yet to figure out how to splice the two clips together again.
I'm sure the pros won't like this, but I find it makes things easier.

  • Arch as a Media Center PC

I'm just now getting my beast of a desktop back up and running from a failed video card (overheated and fried, fan was bad).
It's a rather outdated Athlon XP 3200+, it's decked out nicely with 2 gigs ram and approximately 2.5TB of hard drive space (I'm a big file pack rat). 10/100/1000bT, wireless etc.etc.
I'm intending to can the OS which resides on a 30 GB Cheetah and turn this thing into a media center system. I've checked out things like GeexBox and Movix2 but I don't feel either one completely meets my needs as I also require functionality as a desktop environment when the occasion calls.
Any pointers/wikis/how-to's on molding arch into a system designed for such a task? Ideally it would be extremely lightweight (read as no gnome or KDE depends) and also to act as a fileserver for our little network.

    Hello,
    Please try mythdora 5.0.
    http://www.mythdora.com/?q=download
Even though it have gnome as its default Desktop U can install any light weight window manager. It have all the applications  for a media center  OS . If U want more packages, can install through "smart package manager" .
I think after installing basic packages of arch linux, the simple command  " pacman -S xorg xfce4 pvr " will install a lean and mean media center OS.

  • Problem when Installing from Existing Linux with Arch's Image

    Hey!
I'm just getting started with Arch Linux. I made a 20GB unallocated space between my Win7 and Ubuntu partitions, created a new ext4 partition and I'm currently following this guide ("another method" section) in order to install my first attempt of Arch Linux.
I'm on a 64-bit Ubuntu and want to install a 64-bit Arch Linux too, so I'm using the image archlinux-2011.08.19-core-x86_64.iso and in the process of following the instructions in the mentioned guide, I replaced i686 by x86_64.
The problem comes up when I try to do the chrooting, where I get:
chroot: failed to run command `/bin/bash': No such file or directory
Any idea what could I be doing wrong?
    Thanks!

Ok, I had just messed up when mounting the different directories. Sorry for the noise...
Anyway, found more errors when running:
    aif -p interactive
about not finding /lib/modules/3.0.0-13-generic/modules.dep... what makes me think that this guide is intended to be followed when running also an Arch as the Existing Linux.
I think I'll just go with the flash drive option...
    Cheers!

  • [VIDEO TUTORIAL] Installing Arch Linux on GPT/LVM/GRUB2

    Hello everyone,
I've recently switched over from running my machine on LVM with a MSDOS partition style, and I was tired of the limitations of it. Such as 4 primary partions or 3 primary and 1 extended. It was also hindering my flexibility since I had to make 1 primary partition that was /boot, which forced me to make an initram image if I wanted to put my / inside of the LVM. The only way I could truly fix all my problems was to move away from GRUB-Legacy (Which I love since it's so easy to configure) over to GRUB 2(Which is not as bad as I thought it was).
I made this video to help people trying to do this combination. I also included the links to further information in the videos' description. It contains a link to GRUB 2 Architecture and moving over to GRUB (on IBM's site), and also ArchWiki resources for further reading.
    I hope you enjoy it.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69X9ZYA41xU
After you finish doing this, you will end up with this style:
GPT Partition Layout w/ Protective MBR.
    /dev/sda1 - BIOS Boot Partition
/dev/sda2 - Linux LVM (arch is name of LVM)
    --> /dev/arch/boot - ext2
    --> /dev/arch/swap - swap
    --> /dev/arch/root - ext4
    --> /dev/arch/home - ext4

As a complete newbie to partitioning on Linux I'd like to say how grateful I am to for making this.
You've kept it clear, clean and simple which I appreciate.
As most of my ventures into installing Linux is usually accompanied with a graphical installer a great deal of this is fairly alien. It could be nice to have a wiki entry just laying out a few examples for partitioning and setting up arch in various simple and exotic ways.
