Can you edit your post and put the content between "code /code" tags (square brackets around both)
It would make it a lot more readable.

  • USB on Arch Linux as guest in virtualbox

Hi. I'm trying to access the usb port in the arch linux running as guest in the virtualbox so I added in the "/etc/fstab" file this line:
    "none /proc/bus/usb usbfs auto,busgid=###,busmode=0775,devgid=108,devmode=0664 0 0"
to mount the usb automatically, where "###" is the group id that the user is in. As i wasn't in any group and 'vboxusers' group wasn't created when I installed "virtualbox-guest-utils" as I expected so I created the group and added my self into it doing:
    sudo groupadd vboxusers
    sudo usermod -aG vboxusers rsegecin
    grep vboxusers /etc/group
after that when I tried to mount all devices using "mount -a" I get an error saying that the mounting point  "/proc/bus/usb" doesn't exist, so I created another mount point in "/home/rsegecin/usb" and I got another error saying that the file system type 'usbfs' is unknown.
how do I register the file system type 'usbfs'? how can I access the usb port in guest arch linux?
    thank you very much.

Okay, this is a long shot.  Let's try this experiment.  I found a suggest that one try this as root:
    mount --bind /dev/bus/usb /proc/bus/usb
But here is what that does.  In the olden days, /proc was the way to deal with virtual file systems that let you communicate with the kernel.  It used to be there was /proc/bus/usb.  That was deprecated, and later removed in favor of /dev/bus/usb.  It kind of makes sense, because it is a device, not a kernel thingy.  But there are legacy software that look in /proc/bus.  That bind command links the old method to the new method.  But, it also says that the stuff in /dev/bus/usb is the same stuff that had been in /proc/bus/usb.  (Forgive we, I am thinking this though as I type).   Where this leaves me is this, your device is appearing at /dev/bus/usb/001/002.  You can prove that by removing the device (using the Virtualbox tools to disconnect the device from the VM).  That node should go away, then reappear when you reconnect it.  The problem is what do you do with it?  I don't think that usbfs exists anymore.
What kind of device is it?  There may be a better way to deal with it.  Obviously, if it is mass storage, there are ways to use it as such.  Likewise, if it is a character device (serial port, modem, etc) there may be a /dev/ttyUSBx type node to talk to it.  If it is a HID (Human Interface Device) like a keyboard, mouse, joystick. or a lot of widgets that use the HID model (like credit card readers), there will be a node like /dev/hidraw0.  I have used that quite a bit.
Maybe we should back up a bit.  After you (virtually) connect the device, what gets appended to the journal?  Also, what is the output of lsusb -v

  • [SOLVED] Arch Linux Guest Virtual Box OSE problem

So I am installing my Arch Linux as a Guest in my Ubuntu partition, through Virtual Box OSE (3.2.8). I followed the wiki ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ar … lBox_Guest ) but still have an issue:
sudo pacman -S kernel26-headers xorg gcc make
    sudo mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
    sudo /mnt/cdrom/VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run
But It fails on Shared folders, and cannot recognize X:
:: Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions Kernel Modules [BUSY]
:: Building the main Guest Additions module [DONE]
:: Building the shared folder support module [FAIL]
(Look at /var/log/vboxadd-install.log to find otu what went wrong)
:: Warning: Unknown version of the X Window System installed. Not installing X Window System drivers.
:: Installing graphics libraries and desktop services components [Done]
    /var/log/vboxadd-install.log states:
/tmp/vbox.0/vfsmod.c:406:9: error: unknown field 'clear_inode' specified in initalizer
/tmp/vbox.0/vfsmod.c:406:9 warning: initalization from incompatible pointer type.
Which is strange, because as far as I know, clear_inode is part of the linux headers.
Any idea why this is happening? Do I just need to update VirtualBox to a newer version?

    Updating Virtualbox fixed the issue.

  • [SOLVED] Arch as Guest on VirtualBox on a Dell XPS 15 - Wireless Not..

I have a Dell XPS 15 (2012 Model L521X) that I'm running arch on as a guest in virtualbox. Dell XPS 15 Wiki says the Atheros wireless adapter should work out of the box. It's not working for me, so I found under the wireless wiki that the module for this card is ath9k. I modprobed it but I still can't get the interface to come up. I also tried /etc/modules-load.d/ath9k.conf and rebooted. Still nothing. ip link shows no wireless interface. Ethernet works fine.
    lspci -v
    only shows the Ethernet controller.
    journalctl -b | grep Network
just shows the e1000 Intel PRO/1000 Network Driver.
The last thing I tried per the XPS 15 wiki is installing rfkill to toggle the wireless adapter on/off by using fn+f2 key, also with no luck. So I'm stomped. Anything else that I can possibly check for to get this wifi running?

The problem is, you are not running on a Dell XPS 15.  You are running on a VirtualBox virtual machine.  That machine has a (virtual) wired Ethernet adapter that looks like an e1000.   You establish Ethernet connectivity through that 'wired' network to your host computer.   Depending on how VirtualBox is configured, that virtual network is either bridged to to Wireless Card that is owned by the host, or the host/VirtualBox provide NAT forwarding to whatever network the host is attached.   In all likelihood, it is NAT.  Leave it NAT, unless your guest needs to be a server.
    What is your host OS?
What happens, on your guest OS, if you just run dhcpcd as root?  You should get an address like 10.0.0.2.  If so, and if the host has a wireless connection, you will probably find the guest does too.

  • [SOLVED] VirtualBox: Arch Linux host unable to reach guest over NA...

    Hello everyone,
I recently installed VirtualBox on my Arch Linux install to tinker with GitLab on a Debian VM. I've set up a standard VM running Debian (wheezy) and made sure it's network settings were set to "NAT". However, I am unable to ping or ssh to this VM (which is running an ssh server among other things). Where this gets a bit weirder is that I'm perfectly able to ping and ssh to my host machine (running Arch).
I installed the version of VirtualBox available on the official repos and I'm running on the default kernel too.
I've install VirutalBox by following the infos posted on the wiki. My current user is part of the vboxusers group :
    % groups duane
disk lp wheel uucp locate rfkill games network video audio optical floppy storage scanner power users vboxusers
I've added the proper kernel modules to /etc/modules-load.d/virtualbox.conf so that they are loaded automatically on boot time :
    vboxdrv
    vboxnetadp
    vboxnetflt
    vboxpci
    % lsmod | grep vbox
    vboxpci 14581 0
    vboxnetflt 17612 0
    vboxnetadp 18355 0
    vboxdrv 264794 5 vboxnetadp,vboxnetflt,vboxpci
I must also note that the net-tools package is installed.
Now, I get the ip adress of my host :
    % ip addr
1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN group default
    link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
    inet 127.0.0.1/8 scope host lo

    valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
    inet6 fe80::5eac:4cff:fe09:d3f3/64 scope link
    valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
Then I try to ping it from my Debian guest.
    user@debian:~% ping 192.168.1.22 -c 3

And I try to ping my guest from my host :

There. I hope I didn't give too much information.
I don't really understand what's going on there, usually that workfow works immediately in all the distributions I tried before, and on windows as well. I think I followed all the steps to make this work and yet it doesn't, and I'm not sure this problem is related to VirtualBox itself.
Thanks in advance for any tip or comment on that.

What I do for all my VB guest VM's is to set 2 network interfaces, one the normal (default) NAT, and the other a host-only interface. That way your guests are completely hidden from the local lan which may be desirable if e.g., your host is a laptop which you move around various places. The guests can access anything outbound and you can still ssh to them from the host (and also, using ssh ProxyCommand via that host if you want to access them remotely).

  • [SOLVED] 3d Acceleration on Arch Linux guest

I've just installed the latest FTP Arch Linux (2009.02) as a Guest running in Virtual Box 3.0.2 in my Windows 7 host, and I cannot get Xorg working at all.
    - 3D Acceleration is enabled for the VM, and 128MB of video memory allocated
    - Guest Additions were installed successfully, added rc.vboxadd to daemons, and everything loads ok on startup.
Output of 'dmesg | grep vbox':
vboxadd: Successfully loaded version 3.0.2 (interface 0x0010004)
vboxvfs: Successfully loaded version 3.0.2 (interface 0x0010004)
[drm] Initialized vboxvideo 1.0.0 20090303 for 0000:00:02.0 on minor 0
    Here is my .xinitrc:
    /usr/bin/VBoxClient-all
I've symlinked vboxvideo_dri.so since the installer didn't do it.
    Output of 'ls -l /usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri/vboxvideo_dri.so':
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 2009-07-31 22:42 /usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri/vboxvideo_dri.so -> /usr/lib/VBoxOGL.so
And error when I run 'startx':
(EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri/vboxvideo_dri.so failed (libXcomposite.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)
(EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
waiting for X server to shut down
And then it shuts down, without even trying to load swrast_dri.so. But the weirdest part is, that symlink exists, but X is saying it doesn't! I've restarted the VM and still get the same error.
Here is my xorg.conf (created by installing GA), and I do have HAL up and running, loaded before the rc.vboxadd daemon:
    # Default xorg.conf for Xorg 1.5+ without PCI_TXT_IDS_PATH enabled.
    # This file was created by VirtualBox Additions installer as it
    # was unable to find any existing configuration file for X.
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "VirtualBox Video Card"
    Driver "vboxvideo"
    EndSection
    So... what next?

Silly me, I forgot the libxcomposite package. I guess I should read the errors closer.
Anyway, I'm still getting an error (signal 11) being caused by VBoxClient-all. Here is my Xorg.0.log:

  • No internet/DNS connection with Arch guest on Virtualbox

I am trying to run Archlinux as a guest OS in Virtualbox on an Ubuntu 7.10 host system, and I cannot connect to anything but my router. So far, I have only installed the base system (Arch Linux core 2007.08-2) from a CD.
I can ping the localhost (both on 127.0.0.1 and 10.0.2.15) and my gateway (10.0.2.2), but not my DNS server (10.0.2.3) or anything else (like www.google.com). So far, I went through the "Beginners Guide", the "Official Arch Linux Install Guide", the configuring network section of the ArchWiki, and tried to find some solution on the internet. Still no luck.
I have set up networking to use dhcp. The networking section in my /etc/rc.conf file looks like:
    HOSTNAME="arch"
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    eth0="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=(lo eth0)
    ROUTES=(!gateway)
The daemons that run during startup are:
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond)
I have put the hostname in the /etc/hosts file like:
    127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost arch
The nameserver that shows up in my /etc/resolv.conf file is:
    nameserver 10.0.2.3
I am a bit puzzled and I don't know what to do. I do think it is an Arch issue, since I also have Windows XP running in a Virtualbox with Ubuntu as host, and that works fine with the same Virtualbox settings and network settings within the guest OS.
I would appreciate any help here.

    Try reading the VirtualBox manuals.
I specifically remember that ping doesn't work at all, although you DO have internet connection.
Try running some sort of web browser (firefox or links), and then decide if you have internet access or not.
And, of course, make sure you do have dhcp running ("dhcpcd eth0").
    One last thing:
I have an Arch guest (on VirtualBox), running on an Arch host.
    Everything works fine..
Simply installed it from the installation CD, didn't have to do nothing special for it to work..

  • [GUIDE] How to get MapleStory working in Arch Linux

MapleStory is a free-of-charge, 2D, side-scrolling massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by the South Korean company Wizet. Several versions of the game are available for specific countries or regions, and each is published by various companies such as Wizet and Nexon. Although playing the game is free, character appearances and gameplay enhancements can be purchased from the "Cash Shop" using real money. MapleStory has a combined total of over 50 million subscriber accounts in all of its versions. MapleStory North America (Global), for players mainly in North America and outside of East Asia, Southeast Asia and Europe, has over three million players.
In the game, players travel the "Maple World", defeating monsters and developing their characters' skills and abilities as is typical in role-playing games. Players can interact with others in many ways, such as through chatting, trading, and playing minigames. Groups of players can band together in parties to hunt monsters and share the rewards. Players can also join a guild to interact more easily with each other.
I am an avid mapler myself, however, I am also an avid archer! For some time, I have wanted to get MapleStory working on Arch Linux in some way, but nothing seemed to work. As you might have guessed by now, recently, while playing around with VirtualBox, I discovered a method to get MapleStory working on it! Though in this method you won't actually have MapleStory running on Arch Linux, you'll have it running on a VirtualBox Windows virtual machine, that is still pretty good compared to other people's experiences.
I hope there are at least a few maplers on this forum, and if there aren't, I hope that someone will port this post over to other Linux, or even MapleStory, forums. Anyways, let's begin.
    1. Download and install a version of Virtual Box that is version 3.0+. The reason for this is that, only versions 3.0+ support an experimental DirectX Driver with 3D acceleration that is required for MapleStory to run.
    2. Create a Windows Virtual Machine, add a hard disk to it, and install and update Windows on it(preferably Windows XP, as it uses less resources than other contemporary Windows installations).
    3. Once you have done all you needed and wanted on that Windows installation, restart it, boot it into safe mode by holding F8 at the boot, and wait until the desktop is fully loaded.
    4. After you are at the desktop, go to "Devices" at the top of the menu of the Windows virtual machine, and select "Install Guest Additions...". Wait until Guest Additions finishes installing, and when VirtualBox asks you if you want to mount the disk containing the Guest Additions on the virtual machine, say "Yes".
    5. Run the main executable on the disk that doesn't have amd64 or x86 following its name. Follow the instructions it gives you, and when it asks you what components to install, make sure both of the boxes it shows you are checked.
    6. After the install is completed, the virtual machine will restart. After it restarts, shut it down.
    7. Congratulations! You now have DirectX installed on your VirtualBox virtual machine! Now you need to activate the "3D Acceleration", that enables it.
    8. In the VirtualBox main window, make sure you have your machine with Windows selected. Then, click on "Machine", and then "Settings...", at the top. A new window should pop up. On the left hand side, click on the display panel, and in the new settings section, tick Enable 3D Acceleration. Click "OK", to save the settings.
    9. Start your Windows virtual machine, install MapleStory just as you would on a normal windows computer, and run MapleStory.
Notes: This way of running MapleStory is slower than by running it normally, on a normal windows computer. Also, try to not interact with your Linux desktop while playing MapleStory, because this can cause HackShield to shut down MapleStory, due to the fact that it believes there is a hacking attempt.
If any of you port this guide to any other place on the web, please, credit me, neovaysburd5.

Alright, I've posted it in the wiki. I don't know if it meets the Arch Linux wiki standards, so if there is absolutely anything wrong with it, please fix it right away. Don't even ask my permission.

  • Arch Linux freezes the whole system in VMware

    Hi,
I use Windows Vista as main OS and I'm trying to install Arch on VMware, the problem is, when I log in into the console and try to type anything else, it will crash my host system (Vista).
    This is very weird because:
    a) I'm running a virtual Gentoo on VMware and it doesn't freeze as Arch.
    b) Arch Linux doesn't freeze the system if I use VirtualBox instead of VMware
    c) I did a clean install of XP (just for testing purposes) and virtual Arch also crashed the system.
    This is confusing me because:
    a) Why does Gentoo work and Arch doesn't? Are there base configurations/software so different that one works and the other doesn't?
    b) Why can VirtualBox handle Arch and VMware can't?
    c) Even a clean install can't handle Arch on VMware? Does this mean it's something wrong in my hardware? How come if Gentoo works on VMware and VirtualBox handles Arch?
Please note that I can't use VirtualBox, I must use VMware and I would really like to use Arch instead of Gentoo. I'm trying to ditch Gentoo and use Arch but this problem is leaving me no choice than to keep using Gentoo...
    Any ideas?

Ranguvar wrote:Is it that you can't use VBox, or you must use VMware? There are still other virtual machine apps.
I know, but I want to use VMware. I don't like VirtualBox that much and VMware is better for me. The other virtual machine apps don't even come close to VMware, at least in my point of view. But it doesn't matter, I want to use VMware.
Ranguvar wrote:Anyways, is it the Arch install CD that crashes, or is it Arch after it has been installed? Have you read http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … _in_VMWare ?
After installation, it never crashed during the install as far as I remember.
Ranguvar wrote:Do you get any specific error messages from Windows? Are you using the latest version of VMware? Can you at least try VirtualBox to help isolate the problem?
No specific error messages, nothing in the log files, there's nothing anywhere... Yes, I'm using the latest version. What do you mean try VirtualBox to help isolate the problem? I've already used VirtualBox, installed Arch fine and it didn't freeze.
Ranguvar wrote:This is very odd, and may actually indicate a problem with hardware, or something... a virtual machine should NOT be able to bring down the host, under any circumstances. If it can, both the OS and the virtual machine are bugged. Not too much of a surprise, but yeah.
My thoughts exactly but how can be an hardware problem if VirtualBox works just fine? How can it be a virtual machine problem if Gentoo works fine on VMware?
fumbles wrote:Sounds like a problem with VMware (or maybe Vista?) not Arch. Try reinstalling VMware, make sure it is at the lastest version (maybe try even roll back to the previous version), make sure Vista is updated. When you say crash, do you mean BSoD? Or does it just freeze? If it is a BSoD then what is the specific error?
It just freezes, not a BSOD. It is not a problem with Vista because it also happens on XP. Like I said on my first post, I did a clean install of XP, update all drivers and did all Windows updates, installed latest VMware version and the same thing still happened.
Joe_Arch wrote:How much ram are you allocating to Arch? Counterintuitively, you might want to try lowering it. If you allocate too much your host OS freaks out.
I have 2Gb (2x1024Mb) installed on my laptop and I'm using just 256Mb for Arch.
jacko wrote:someone else was having this issue the other day on irc. the fact is a guest OS should NEVER even come close to crashing the host OS. So more then likely this is a bug in VMware and not arch. What arch packages that is causing the conflict with VMware is unapparent, but it's not likely a bug arch can fix.
That was me... I'm not saying it's a bug on Arch, but it's weird that Gentoo doesn't have a problem and Arch does. They must differ somehow, one must use some package where the other doesn't or some global system configuration is different from one to the other, there must be some difference, otherwise, they both would freeze or they both would work...

  • Recommend Virtualization Software on Arch Linux 64-bit

I have my Arch Linux 64-bit workstation and need to test out some virtual guest machines and was wondering if anyone on Arch Linux has ever had any results between Oracle's 'VirtualBox' or 'VMware' suite. I heard good things about both. VMware has a crazy / confusing amount of options and different versions which appear to be more 'enterprise' geared but this could be the fact that it's just been around longer and more known commonly known.
Thanks for any feedback / suggestions on what I should use.

    http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/VBox_vs_Others
Of course, take it with a grain of salt since it is from Virtualbox website.
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6301 … virtualbox
Some slightly old benchmarks there.  Vbox is in version 3 now, not 2.  But probably somewhere out there you could google some benchmarks if that is what you are interested in.
As far as personal experience, I used to use Qemu, then VMware, and now been on Virtualbox for a couple years.  I like having a little pet WinXP kept in its cage   It works fine with me. I switched off of VMware because I liked the Seamless Mode in Vbox and Vbox has experimental D3D support

  • Parallels and Arch Linux

I am running windows xp on my laptop. Its a work laptop so i am sorta stuck with xp. It has parallels on it. Can i run Arch Linux successfully under parallels? I kow its not on the approved guest os list, but then again, the only ones they list are the "for noobs" distros. I dont see why it wouldn't work but i just thought i would check it out before going through the install and being disappointed. I wish my company would just go linux already and stop all the evil!

Following the wise words of the good people over on this thread:
    http://bbs.archlinux.org:80/viewtopic.php?id=65114
who think that I (and all the others who suggested using virtualbox) are complete .... lets say ... dorks, I will repost with what I hope you (the op) might consider a more helpful (and they, a more acceptable) response. So here it is, my revised response.
I have absolutely no idea if it will work. I've never tried installing arch with parallels, But I have tried installing quite a few dozen other flavours of linux on parallels and never had a problem getting them to install. Despite the fact that there is no explicit mention of arch on the 'approved guest os list', I imagine it would work just fine like all the other linux distros that ARE explicitly mentioned.
If you do decide to put your cd/dvd in the drive and try and install arch under parallels, then please post back here so that the next person that asks the same question can be given an explicit yes or no answer.
@Allan (Forum Moderator from the unhappy thread) Please don't ban me for my unacceptable original response. I promise I wont ever say anything ever again.

  • Make bootable arch linux iso of installed system

I have installed Arch Linux in virtual box, with "Awesome" window manager and only required applications with it.
I want to make a bootable iso of this system, which i can carry around with me in pendrive and install in other system. Also, can i make a live usb from it?
Is it possible? If so, please specify the detailed steps. I am a newbie and have been using linux for 2-3 months only. Or, please give the link for the same.
    Thanks

    Thanks for the reply ewaller.
    >Well, not quite.  But, this is a VM.  I assume you want to treat this as an appliance that you can copy to another host that has VirtualBox on it.  All you need to do is copy >the *.vbox file that defines your VM (it is an xml file).  It is about 10 to 20 kbytes in size.  You also need to copy the file that defines the guests "disk".  That is (usually) a *.vdi file. > Those can be tens or hundreds of gigabytes.
    >If you actually ran from the pen drive, you could carry that drive from host to host.  If you make a change in the machine while running on one host, thrn shut doen the >VM, and then move to another host, then those changes will follow you.
    >If you are just looking to copy the VM to many places; after which the various copies can diverge from each other,  you can just export the appliance to a *.ovf or a *.ova file on > one machine, then import that file on the next host.
In above case, i would only be able to transfer between the virtual machine and that will be restricting.
I did some research and found following thread which is similar to my problem,
    http://askubuntu.com/questions/119718/h … d-remaster
but one of the two solution provided here only works on ubuntu(i.e relinux),which was suitable to me and the other one,ie clonezilla to make iso, i haven't tried, but it doesn't do what i want.
Relink does exactly what i want but doesn't work on arch linux. It is a fork of remastersys which is dicontinued and only worked for ubuntu and its related.
    I also found this http://null-byte.wonderhowto.com/how-to … o-0131002/
but haven't tried it yet. Also it require to redo all the steps that i have currently done, so i want an alternative.
I also found a simple way, but it is essentially just backuping and restoring and require base install.
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=44805
    Atlast, i got this http://systeminstaller.sourceforge.net/
but there is no description if it will work with arch linux or not.
I want something like above mentioned and i have  no further ideas and searched everywhere, if anyone has any ideas, please suggest something.
    Thanks in advance.

-- You probably don't want to read anything below --
    The story
So...rather than wasting internet bandwith to download a new Ubuntu ISO to test out the new Unity features, I decided to try to make it work under Arch Linux. It took a whole lot longer than I expected to get it even partially working. So, here's my story:
Knowing that Unity isn't in the main repositories, I went the AUR's website and looked for a user created Unity package. That didn't go too well. The Unity package hasn't been updated for 6 months. D'oh! I decided to download the existing PKGBUILD and modify it to work with the Unity 4.xx series. After changing the version number, I tried to "makepkg" it, and was greeted with a message about installing Compiz 0.9.x. I thought it would be an easy install. It was quite the opposite. Compiz's install prefix was set to /opt/unity, but FindCompiz cmake build file expected Compiz to be in /usr, so none of the Compiz packages, except for compiz-core would compile. Then, I tried reinstalling compiz-core, but this time, changing the prefix to /usr. The compiled package ended up being only a few kilobytes big. I guess the mouse wheel was invented for a reason. I looked at the PKGBUILD again, only to find that there was a line at the very bottom that ran "rm -rf ${pkgdir}/usr". That explains a lot! I ended up adopting all the compiz*-git packages and fixing them so they would compile and install.
So, now that Compiz is working (restarted and tested just to make sure I didn't waste my time with something that didn't work), I went on to install the rest of the dependencies listed in the Unity PKGBUILD file. That went relatively well. I was so happy after seeing the progress counter go up after running "makepkg", but at about 8%, gcc spat out an error about an undeclared function (sorry, I forgot what the function was). Natually, I went to Google and searched the name of the function. 0 results! Exactly was I was looking for! I ended up downloading the Ubuntu 11.10 Alpha 3 ISO and running "find -type f /usr/lib | xargs objdump -T | grep the_function". The problem lied in the libindicator package. There was a newer version available which contained that function. I have no idea why a package that's only 0.02 versions ahead of the AUR package would contain new functions...
Next! Utouch...ugh...great memories! Not! I was so glad that I had fixed the utouch packages earlier (for touchegg to work). I was too frustrated from compiz and libindicator to try to compile more stuff.
Cmake. Whoever created the CMakeLists.txt file didn't list all the dependencies required. So after running "makepkg" 10 billion times, waiting for "somebodydidntputthisincmake.h not found" errors to appear, I finally got all the dependencies I needed installed...or so I thought. After installing and compiling all these dependencies, the cmake only continues 3% further before encountering another cryptic gcc error. This time, there no error about a file not being found. So not knowing what dependency was missing, I headed over to http://packages.ubuntu.com and downloaded the Unity DEB source to find the dependencies in then debian/control file. After install those few dependencies that I missed, I ran "makepkg" again, hoping that it would finally compile successfully. CMake went a little further--5% further to be exact--before running into another error. It complained about DndSourceDragBegin() having two return types. Sure, enough "./plugins/unityshell/src/ResultViewGrid.h" had the return type as boolean and "/usr/include/Nux-1.0/Nux/InputArea.h" had the return type as void. WTF? How the heck does this even compile under 11.10???
After changing void to bool in "/usr/include/Nux-1.0/Nux/InputArea.h", I ran "makepkg" once again anxiously waiting to the see the line "Finished making: unity 4.10.2". CMake compiled about 35% before running into error about an undeclared gtk function. Nooooooooooooo!!! I wasn't brave enough to install the git version of gtk3, so I created a chroot, installed the base packages, and installed all of those dependencies fairly quickly (it gets a lot easier after doing it so many times).
Moving on to gtk3. After cloning the ~200MB git repository, autotools spits out an error about cairo-gl missing. So, I proceeded to install the cairo-gl-git package, which failed to compile (it compiled successfully outside of the chroot...). GREAT. So, Unity fails to compile because GTK version is too old, and GTK failed to compile because cairo-gl is missing, and cairo-gl fails to compile because I'm in a chroot. GAHHH!!! While thinking about throwing the computer out of the window, I searched the AUR for other GTK3 packages. I just happened to find a package named "GTK3-UBUNTU"! That package was still at version 3.0, but it was pretty easy to get the patches and source code for 3.1 from the Ubuntu GTK source package.
So, FINALLY, Unity compiles. I was so darn happy, I didn't even care if it ran or not. I logged out and logged back into the GNOME 3 fallback mode, and entered the chroot. After running "xhost +SI:localuser:chenxiaolong" to run X11 apps in the chroot, I crossed my fingers and ran "DISPLAY=:0.0 unity --replace". It failed with python 3 complaining about missing modules. That's okay, since the Unity launch script is written in python 2. I changed the shebang line in "/usr/bin/unity" to point to python 2 and ran "DISPLAY=:0.0 unity --replace". It didn't necessarily fail, but it didn't succeed either. It didn't print out any error messages. Weird... I thought I'd try enabling Unity from the compiz settings manager then. I ran "DISPLAY=:0.0 compiz --replace" and "DISPLAY=:0.0 ccsm" and enabled the Unity plugin. Unity runs! Although nothing shows on the screen, it runs! It shows up in the process list! Woohoo!
And that's about how far I got. There were quite a few Vala errors during the compiling process (I forgot which package it was), which is probably why Unity won't appear. I'll try again later with the vala-devel or vala-git package and hopefully Unity will work then. Here are screenshots of what I've gotten working so far:

By then way, I love the simplicity of pacman and the AUR. I can't imagine how long this would have taken with other package managers.

City-busz: I'm getting a ton of Vala errors when I compile libunity (AUR version) with vala or vala-devel. libunity fails to compile with vala-git. I'll try your packages in a virtual machine and see how they work on 64 bit.
In the meantime, Unity still fails to show up: http://i.imgur.com/btPwo.png I'll try out your PKGBUILDS and see how that works. I'm glad there are people who want to port Unity to Arch Linux
EDIT: City-busz: Just to let you know, Unity will fail to compile at around 45% with GTK 3.0. Here's my source packaage for Ubuntu's GTK 3.1: http://ubuntuone.com/p/1EzX/ It contains all of the patches in the Ubuntu source package. I'm not sure if all the patches are needed, but GTK compiles fine with all of them.
EDIT2: Right now, I'm trying to compile Vala 0.10.4, then version used in Ubuntu 11.10. Hopefully that will eliminate some of the Vala errors.
EDIT3: Vala 0.10 is too old. 0.12 and 0.14 are also in the Ubuntu repository. Trying those...
EDIT4: 0.14 is actually 0.13.1. Gah... Vala takes longer to compile under VirtualBox than GTK3...
EDIT5: Okay...so VirtualBox "helpfully" became slow enough that I could read the error messages. The Vala error messages aren't actually error messages, but rather warnings about unused methods. I wonder what prevents Unity from running then...

  • Installing/using Arch linux in Parallels on Mac OS X Lion MBP Retina

I am having a problem where I can't install or use Arch Linux as the same error always crops up at some point or another.
    loading user-specifide modules [busy]
pc_ich: RCBA is disabled by hardware/BIOS, device disabled
pc_ich [some random numbers]: I/O space for GPIO uninitialized
    BUG: soft lockup -- CPU#0 stuck for 22s [kworker/u:0:5]
    Thanks for any ideas.

I am pretty sure that Linux has some known serious issues with thre retina Macbook as well as some of the new Airs.
See this thread, it may help: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=144255&p=1
Edit: Sorry i didn't read the "Parallels" in the title.  Though I am not familiar with parallels, so I am not sure what kind of system it is actually trying to emulate.  What happens if you use something else like virtualbox or some other free virtual machine software.
