    Hi everyone,
    just wanted to share this wallpaper I made with GIMP, following a tutorial I found on abduzeedo.com (or http://abduzeedo.com/rawz-light-effects-photoshop, to be more specific), a blog for graphics design. The tutorial was originally intended for Photoshop and with me being not at all experienced with GIMP (or Photoshop, for that matter), the result turned out to be a lot more simplistic than it was meant to be at first. But then again, I guess that suits an Arch Linux Wallpaper better anyway.
    The Arch Linux logo is taken from http://www.archlinux.org/art/.
    I opened a new thread for this as I couldn't seem to find a thread dedicated to wallpapers.

    Sure, go ahead and do whatever you want with it! I'd even add it as a theme myself, I don't know how to add stuff to the AUR though and right now I'm a little too busy to get involved in that. A GDM theme would be awesome as well (mainly because that's what I use) but I think I'll give that a shot myself later. I've always (always as in "for about a year") wanted to do a theme for GDM anyway - the wallpaper would have to be changed a little for that though (put the logo off-centre).
    If you need to apply changes to the image, tell me and I'll upload it in GIMP's editable format!

    It's been a long time since I've contributed anything to Arch. Very disappointed in myself. Something I've never done is artwork. Never considered myself an artist.
    Daniel Isenmann, on the other hand is an artist, with fantastic photography skills. On seeing his iceland photo I immediately saw potential for an Arch Linux wallpaper. I don't have the gimp skills I would like, but I'm not unhappy with how it turned out:

    Thank you Yes, Blender works very well on Linux, you can get it from the official arch repo ($ sudo pacman -S blender). This image was modeled and rendered entirely on Arch Linux using Blender + Gimp for some touch-ups (I would never make an Arch Linux wallpaper on Windows/Mac, that's sacrilege ).
    Thanks for the criticism as well. Like I mentioned above, I'm working on a couple improvements and different designs already. I'll keep your suggestion in mine while designing them.

  • Arch Linux User Creation Section

    I think there should be some sort of Arch Linux software/script/multimedia section in this board.  Like the various splash screens, wallpapers, scripts, and other related software/things that the users of Arch Linux have created.  It isn't very easy to find the various scripts that Arch Linux users have made, so it would be a good idea to move things that make the Arch Linux experience much better to a section all to itself, either that or make there be some centralized place on the website with links to stuff like Arch Stats and some of the other scripts that I know people have made, but are hard to find.
    Also, many distributions' websites have a few screenshots of their distro in action, so maybe we should take a few of the best screenshots that were posted to the forum, and put those in a section on the website.

  • Troubles with HP OfficeJet 6500 E710n-z on Arch Linux

    Recently, I have tried to use my printer after five months break. It used to run smoothly on Arch Linux with hplip. However, now, I have not managed to make it print properly with hplip again. This is my configuration, as seen from the CUPS web interface:
        Driver: HP Officejet 6500 e710n-z hpijs, 3.12.11 (color, 2-sided printing)
        Connection: hp:/net/Officejet_6500_E710n-z?ip=192.168.1.4
    After trying to print some test page, the jobs listing in the CUPS web interface showed me a error message "Filter failed". I deleted my .cups and .hplip directories in my home folder and reinstalled cups and hplip. The same symptoms appeared again after restarting and a fresh installation.

    My Arch system is up-to-date. I heard that it might have become necessary to install the hplip-plugin somewhen in the last month for some HP printer models. If I understand the table at the bottom of http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/mo … 10n-z.html correctly, then the hplip-plugin is neither required nor available for my printer model. I tested also installing it from AUR, just because it was worth a try (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/hplip-plugin/), but this made matters worse, having my printer to madly produce almost-empty paper with some crap characters at each page top. As expected, the hplip-plugin was a dead-end, and I uninstalled it to continue some experimentation with printing test pages (all on the same page, mind the trees!). Resuming the printer, CUPS prints
    ***** Unable to open the initial device, quitting.

    Indeed, some errors show up. I find it strange that ghostscript is called with a parameter -sDeviceModel="HP Color LaserJet 2600n" -dDuplex=true even though I clearly have an inkjet printer and no laser printer – and also specified the correct printer model. Also later, I can see the two lines

    which to the best of my knowledge indicates some internal mess. Raising the debug level in cups.conf did not tell me anything new.
    Notably, using the hpcups driver at least makes the printer print pages properly, but the wonderful (mind the trees) duplex-mode seems to only be available when using hpijs when selecting the PPD file in the add printer wizard. That is why I want to stay with the driver mentioned above.
    The trouble for me is that the printing pipeline is so complex and so many components are involved that I have no real good starting point to where exactly post bug reports. I would appreciate if some fellows with the same printer and the same errors could confirm my description. Or even point out how to get that organism to paint ink properly on the paper. Any ideas where to start? Or references to better resources regarding the combo of HP OfficeJet 6500 E710n-z and Arch? Is it just an regression bug and will be fixed? Is my system corrupted in some way? There is lots of open questions I don't quite feel able to answer all by myself. Any hints for troubleshooting appreciated!

    SCAN ISSUE SOLVED!!!!
    I have an HP Photosmart 6500a Plus printer that is connected via USB to a less than 1 year old Dell XPS 8300 tower running Win 7 64bit Home Premium Edition.  The print function worked fine but scans would halt mid-way through the scan and eventually the software would indicate that it had lost connection with the scanner. 
    After EXTENSIVE testing, I determined that the problem was with the Dell tower and NOT THE PRINTER.  I hooked the printer up to a Dell Inspiron mni-tower running Vista and had NO PROBLEM scanning.  I hooked the printer up to a Gateway laptop running Win 7 Pro and had NO PROBLEM scanning.
    On a hunch, I inserted a POWERED USB hub in between the Dell XPS 8300 tower and the HP Photosmart 6500a Plus and was rewarded with a, first time ever on the XPS 8300, complete and flawless scan.
    I surmise that the HP Photosmart 6500a Plus was not getting the required voltage from the USB on the Dell XPS 8300 tower and that was causing the scan to fail.
    WOOHOO!

  • System encryption using LUKS and GPG encrypted keys for arch linux

    Update: As of 2012-03-28, arch changed from gnupg 1.4 to 2.x which uses pinentry for the password dialog. The "etwo" hook described here doesn't work with gnupg 2. Either use the openssl hook below or use a statically compiled version of gnupg 1.4.
    Update: As of 2012-12-19, the mkinitcpio is not called during boot, unless the "install" file for the hook contains "add_runscript". This resulted in an unbootable system for me. Also, the method name was changed from install () to build ().
    Update: 2013-01-13: Updated the hook files using the corrections by Deth.
    Note: This guide is a bit dated now, in particular the arch installation might be different now. But essentially, the approach stays the same. Please also take a look at the posts further down, specifically the alternative hooks that use openssl.
    I always wanted to set up a fully encrypted arch linux server that uses gpg encrypted keyfiles on an external usb stick and luks for root filesystem encryption. I already did it once in gentoo using this guide. For arch, I had to play alot with initcpio hooks and after one day of experimentation, I finally got it working. I wrote a little guide for myself which I'm going to share here for anyone that might be interested. There might be better or easier ways, like I said this is just how I did it. I hope it might help someone else. Constructive feedback is always welcome
    Intro
    Using arch linux mkinitcpio's encrypt hook, one can easily use encrypted root partitions with LUKS. It's also possible to use key files stored on an external drive, like an usb stick. However, if someone steals your usb stick, he can just copy the key and potentially access the system. I wanted to have a little extra security by additionally encrypting the key file with gpg using a symmetric cipher and a passphrase.
    Since the encrypt hook doesn't support this scenario, I created a modifed hook called “etwo” (silly name I know, it was the first thing that came to my mind). It will simply look if the key file has the extension .gpg and, if yes, use gpg to decrypt it, then pipe the result into cryptsetup.
    Conventions
    In this short guide, I use the following disk/partition names:
    /dev/sda: is the hard disk that will contain an encrypted swap (/dev/sda1), /var (/dev/sda2) and root (/dev/sda3) partition.
    /dev/sdb is the usb stick that will contain the gpg encrypted luks keys, the kernel and grub. It will have one partition /dev/sdb1 formatted with ext2.
    /dev/mapper/root, /dev/mapper/swap and /dev/mapper/var will be the encrypted devices.

    Guide
    1. Boot the arch live cd
    I had to use a newer testing version, because the 2010.05 cd came with a broken gpg. You can download one here: http://releng.archlinux.org/isos/. I chose the “core“ version. Go ahead and boot the live cd, but don't start the setup yet.
    2. Set keymap
    Use km to set your keymap. This is important for non-qwerty keyboards to avoid suprises with passphrases...
    3. Wipe your discs
    ATTENTION: this will DELETE everything on /dev/sda and /dev/sdb forever! Do not blame me for any lost data!
    Before encrypting the hard disc, it has to be completely wiped and overwritten with random data. I used shred for this. Others use badblocks or dd with /dev/urandom. Either way, this will take a long time, depending on the size of your disc. I also wiped my usb stick just to be sure.
    shred -v /dev/sda
    shred -v /dev/sdb
    4. Partitioning
    Fire up fdisk and create the following partitions:
    /dev/sda1, type linux swap.
    /dev/sda2: type linux
    /dev/sda3: type linux
    /dev/sdb1, type linux
    Of course you can choose a different layout, this is just how I did it. Keep in mind that only the root filesystem will be decrypted by the initcpio. The rest will be decypted during normal init boot using /etc/crypttab, the keys being somewhere on the root filesystem.
    5. Format  and mount the usb stick
    Create an ext2 filesystem on /dev/sdb1:
    mkfs.ext2 /dev/sdb1
    mkdir /root/usb
    mount /dev/sdb1 /root/usb
    cd /root/usb # this will be our working directory for now.
    Do not mount anything to /mnt, because the arch installer will use that directory later to mount the encrypted root filesystem.
    6. Configure the network (if not already done automatically)
    ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.0
    route add default gw 192.168.0.1
    echo "nameserver 192.168.0.1" >> /etc/resolv.conf
    (this is just an example, your mileage may vary)
    7. Install gnupg
    pacman -Sy
    pacman -S gnupg
    Verify that gnupg works by launching gpg.
    8. Create the keys
    Just to be sure, make sure swap is off:
    cat /proc/swaps
    should return no entries.
    Create gpg encrypted keys (remember, we're still in our working dir /root/usb):
    dd if=/dev/urandom bs=512 count=4 | gpg -v --cipher-algo aes256 --digest-algo sha512 -c -a > root.gpg
    dd if=/dev/urandom bs=512 count=4 | gpg -v --cipher-algo aes256 --digest-algo sha512 -c -a > var.gpg
    Choose a strong password!!
    Don't do this in two steps, e.g don't do dd to a file and then gpg on that file. The key should never be stored in plain text on an unencrypted device, except if that device is wiped on system restart (ramfs)!
    Note that the default cipher for gpg is cast5, I just chose to use a different one.
    9. Create the encrypted devices with cryptsetup
    Create encrypted swap:
    cryptsetup -c aes-cbc-essiv:sha256 -s 256 -h whirlpool -d /dev/urandom create swap /dev/sda1
    You should see /dev/mapper/swap now. Don't format nor turn it on for now. This will be done by the arch installer.
    Important: From the Cryptsetup 1.1.2 Release notes:
    Cryptsetup can accept passphrase on stdin (standard input). Handling of new line (\n) character is defined by input specification:
        if keyfile is specified as "-" (using --key-file=- or by positional argument in luksFormat and luksAddKey, like cat file | cryptsetup --key-file=- <action> ), input is processed
          as normal binary file and no new line is interpreted.
        if there is no key file specification (with default input from stdin pipe like echo passphrase | cryptsetup <action> ) input is processed as input from terminal, reading will
          stop after new line is detected.
    If I understand this correctly, since the randomly generated key can contain a newline early on, piping the key into cryptsetup without specifying --key-file=- could result in a big part of the key to be ignored by cryptsetup. Example: if the random key was "foo\nandsomemorebaratheendofthekey", piping it directly into cryptsetup without --key-file=- would result in cryptsetup using only "foo" as key which would have big security implications. We should therefor ALWAYS pipe the key into cryptsetup using --key-file=- which ignores newlines.
    gpg -q -d root.gpg 2>/dev/null | cryptsetup -v -–key-file=- -c aes-cbc-essiv:sha256 -s 256 -h whirlpool luksFormat /dev/sda3
    gpg -q -d var.gpg 2>/dev/null | cryptsetup -v –-key-file=- -c aes-cbc-essiv:sha256 -s 256 -h whirlpool -v luksFormat /dev/sda2
    Check for any errors.
    10. Open the luks devices
    gpg -d root.gpg 2>/dev/null | cryptsetup -v –-key-file=- luksOpen /dev/sda3 root
    gpg -d var.gpg 2>/dev/null | cryptsetup -v –-key-file=- luksOpen /dev/sda2 var
    If you see /dev/mapper/root and /dev/mapper/var now, everything is ok.
    11. Start the installer /arch/setup
    Follow steps 1 to 3.
    At step 4 (Prepare hard drive(s), select “3 – Manually Configure block devices, filesystems and mountpoints. Choose /dev/sdb1 (the usb stick) as /boot, /dev/mapper/swap for swap, /dev/mapper/root for / and /dev/mapper/var for /var.
    Format all drives (choose “yes” when asked “do you want to have this filesystem (re)created”) EXCEPT for /dev/sdb1, choose “no”. Choose the correct filesystem for /dev/sdb1, ext2 in my case. Use swap for /dev/mapper/swap. For the rest, I chose ext4.
    Select DONE to start formatting.
    At step 5 (Select packages), select grub as boot loader. Select the base group. Add mkinitcpio.
    Start step 6 (Install packages).
    Go to step 7 (Configure System).
    By sure to set the correct KEYMAP, LOCALE and TIMEZONE in /etc/rc.conf.

    We're done, you may reboot. Make sure you select the usb stick as the boot device in your bios and hope for the best. . If it didn't work, play with grub's settings or boot from the live cd, mount your encrypted devices and check all settings. You might also have less trouble by using uuid's instead of device names.  I chose device names to keep things as simple as possible, even though it's not the optimal way to do it.
    Make backups of your data and your usb stick and do not forget your password(s)! Or you can say goodbye to your data forever...

  • How to setup grub2 with arch linux and xen, lvm on luks

    OK, so I tried downloading this package from AUR:  https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/xen-git/ , but that has patching problems as noted in the comments.  It looks like the packagebuild sets up all the xen stuff for you, but I can't seem to get the package to install because of the error's while patching.  If anyone can point me in the right direction on what all the extra files in the PKGBUILD are for or how to debug problems with PKGBUILDs not working because of patches.
    So next I just tried to compile the latest xen from git://xenbits.xen.org/xen.git (with ./configure, make, make install) and that seemed to go fine, but I'm a bit confused:
    1.  Do I have to do any additional configuration for xen when working with arch linux?  On ubuntu I could just compile the source, update grub, and make sure to start the x services at runtime.
    2.  How do I set up grub to load xen with this setup?  Right now this is my /boot/grub/grub.cfg:

    As for XEN.... well you could always try QEMU/KVM or LXC.

    Things to note:
    Numerical UUID is the UUID of the ROOT partition.
    Alphabetical UUIS is the BOOT partition
    hd1,msdos2 AND ahci1,msdos2 are how the Grub Bootloader numbers the drives not Linux.
    I have my BOOT partition on a USB stick, and it is the Second partition.
    So, that would make it, Device 2 and Partition 2
    Device numbering starts at 0
    Partition numbering starts at 1
    Oh, and note that you don't need ":allow-discards" ... at all but certainly if you don't have an SSD. Also note that I included the line numbers so it is very clear that I didn't post the whole thing, but instead what I thought was relevant. Finally, I am loading modules that I don't even need, but what the hell... if it ain't broke, don't fix it

  • Arch Linux Gallery

    I am proud to present the re-opening of the new Arch Linux Gallery!
    The Arch Linux Gallery is a site dedicated to screenshots of (guess what?) Arch Linux. It is meant to be a repository for screenshots, configs, artistic creations, and anything else Arch Linux-related.
    When registering, zenphoto will provide you with your own personal album to which you can upload images and configs.
    The only caveat is that, for now, it only supports .txt for text objects. So when uploading configs, they should be of .txt extension. Extensions need to be added, and I'm not sure of all the extensions that will need to be added, so if you want to request an extension to be added please post here and let me know.
    Gallery searching, ie. filtering for only Openbox, is tag-driven, so make sure to tag photos with relevant information. Once some content starts being uploaded I can begin to create some dynamic albums of common content. I also plan to have a dynamic album for each month (like the screenshot threads) but I still need to figure out how to make that possible.

    Is nothing being displayed my fault or the site's fault?
    I go to gallery, and it lists some names with question mark looking graphics beside them.  Then I click the name, and it comes to a page that looks like I should be expecting to see a picture but has nothing.
    Oh, and if I click archive after clicking a name, I see:

    I'm a professional developer (mainly c/c++) with 10 years of development experience. I've never programmed in bash before so this is my first experience. My Linux knowledge isn't good either but i learned a lot thanks to Arch Linux.
    About the thread:
    I need a boot splash for a mini-pc I'm building and i want, of course, use Arch Linux. The current status is pretty depressive, initscripts-splash are outdated and there is no real support for user-mode boot splashing system (like splashy).
    A few suggestions (IMHO) for the Arch Linux developers:
    -Integrate the splash system in the official initscripts. If you write a wrapper like start_daemon and stop_daemon to be used in /etc/rc.multi and /etc/rc.shutdown, we can limit the changes to just /etc/rc.d/functions and at least the initscripts-splash will be more maintainable and the whole code more clean.
    -Patch killall5 to add the support to ignore pids. The patch is really small and the one used by Ubuntu is http://patches.ubuntu.com/s/sysvinit/ex … ids.dpatch. There is a package in AUR that uses a different patch: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=16445. I tested it and so far it worked fine, no problems to be reported.
    Why do we need a patched killall5? Splashy gets killed early during the shutdown process and the whole purpose of having a splash system is defeated. Currently Splashy cannot handle the reboot/shutdown.
    Enough talking, now back to the real stuff. I've modified the initscript-splash package (completely rewritten) and the splashy package (almost completely rewritten).
    I've also written a new package to support splashy themes. I'm using these packages for my system and i never had any problem so far.
    initscripts-splash:
    Rewritten to fit my needs for Splashy. Based on initscripts-2008.05-1 (in testing, if you are not using the testing repo you should better wait till the package hits core).
    It only supports MY Splashy package, no other splash system is supported, not even the "old" Splashy package from AUR.
    splashy:
    Based on the great work done by the maintainers and the contributors of the package in AUR. A lot has been rewritten and it's actually a lot different.
    splashy-themes:
    Simple package with just 1 theme (for now), depends on archlinux-wallpaper and uses a little hack to use the wallpapers provided. I will provide new themes as soon as i have time.
    Splashy now supports:
    Progress bar
    Text output
    Shutdown/Reboot
    Still working on resume/suspend and "verbose on error".
    Installation tutorial:

    -Rebuild your initramfs: mkinitcpio -g /boot/kernel26.img
    -Add "splash" to the kernel command line, if you are not using uvesafb (v86d hook) add vga=791 too. You should also add "quiet".

    Now, we've gone through this a couple of times, and I don't actually want to integrate splash SPECIFIC stuff in the initscripts.
    However, we have the ability to override functions used by the initscripts. All we need to do is extrapolate out the pieces that you would need so that you can override them.
    So, if you would be willing to provide a patch against git (http://projects.archlinux.org/?p=initsc … ;a=summary) which extrapolates the pieces you need, we could get that applied, and you simply need to dump your overriding functions in /etc/rc.d/functions.d/. NOTE: submit the patch to the bug tracker, it will get lost if you just post it on the forums.
    Alternatively, you can just tell us (http://bugs.archlinux.org/) which pieces you want extrapolated, but this will take much longer, as I don't think anyone dealing with this stuff is really gung-ho about splash support.

There is a package in AUR that uses a different patch: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=16445. I tested it and so far it worked fine, no problems to be reported.
    Why do we need a patched killall5? Splashy gets killed early during the shutdown process and the whole purpose of having a splash system is defeated. Currently Splashy cannot handle the reboot/shutdown.
    This seems a little silly to me. I'm sure there's 10 or 20 other ways you could implement the same functionality without needing to patch a quasi-critical binary just for splash support. The patch affects all users. Splashy does not.
    I could not find an alternative solution by myself, as i stated my Linux knowledge isn't more than average. If you could provide me some hints I'll be happy to do some further research on the issue and provide a patch. I'll be glad to drop the sysvinit-mod dependency.
    Without the right know-how i just went the "mainstream way" and did what Debian/Ubuntu did.

  • Complete theme for Arch Linux

    Hi guys. In celebration of Arch's new design, I finally decided to learn more about making wallpapers and GTK+ themes. Unfortunately, I had to basically hack an existing GTK+ theme (Smooth-Line), but it still looks good and matches the overall feel of Arch Linux, in my opinion.
    I've created a collection of files that themes the following things:
    GTK widgets
    Fluxbox
    desktop background
    urxvt
    The goal was to integrate seamlessly with the website's look and feel. I think I've succeeded:
    Unfortunately, I don't have an xcf of the background, so I doubt it can be scaled easily. I guess it's one of those things you don't think about when a project starts out being 'just for me'.
    I've uploaded a g-zipped tarball of the files you'll need to use the theme.

    * The sample .Xdefaults file allows you to change the colors for urxvt. Feel free to delete all the stuff before the "color#" lines.
    * gtkrc goes wherever you want it, but should be put in /usr/share/themes/Smooth-Arch/gtk-2.0/ if you want theme switching apps to recognize it.
    * The background can be put anywhere.
    * Arch-Linux goes in /usr/share/fluxbox/styles or ~/.fluxbox/styles.

    I've got loads of half-finished themes here (or did have; they might have gone when I switched to Arch) - once I found QtCurve, it just seemed too much hassle. It's not totally configurable from the GUI, but it certainly beats poring over gtkrcs until your eyes hurt.
    Edit: I meant to add that the wallpaper works quite well cropped to 5:4 if you take the right end. The big Arch logo loses its bottom left point, but it's not too bad.
