Arch Linux doesn't detect RAID of SAS hard drives

Hello everyone:
I'm trying to install Arch Linux 2009.08 x86_64 on a server IBM xSeries 206m, which has hard drives connected to a SAS controller card Adaptec AIC-9405.
I put the disks in RAID 0 and starting the server, I can see on the menu of the RAID controller card that is fine, but when I'm going to make the partitions, I do not see any hard drive.
Checking with the command dmesg, I found some messages that seem to indicate the failure:
aic94xx: Adaptec aic94xx SAS/SATA driver version 1.0.3 loaded
aic94xx 0000:03:04.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 19 (level, low) -> IRQ 19
aic94xx: found Adaptec AIC-9405W SAS/SATA Host Adapter, device 0000:03:04.0
scsi2 : aic94xx

aic94xx 0000:03:04.0: PCI INT A disabled
aic94xx: probe of 0000:03:04.0 failed with error -2
Someone else with the same problem ... anyone know how to fix it ?

The error message of missing firmware file in dmesg/messages.log is gone away now?
Could you place dmesg.log or messages.log somewhere to view them? (Copy these files over network to an
other machine and load it up to some pastebin service, or attach it here).
You don't see the raid array when doing a: fdisk -l ?
Also a: cat /proc/scsi/scsi should also show the array if up and running.
SCSI modul aic94xx should also have a dir entry in /proc/scsi. Example: my Adaptec 2940 has detailled infos about the controller and device status in:
cat /proc/scsi/aic7xxx/2
If you have such a file (the number could differ on your machine) please post it also.
Maybe it's the best if you open a bugreport in http://bugs.archlinux.org/index/proj6 ....

  • Arch Linux doesn't automatically detect my webcam.

I have a Mikomi USB webcam (not sure which drivers it uses). When I'm logged in and on my desktop (which is, for the record, Gnome 3) and I connect my cam, Arch Linux doesn't detect it. I can resolve this problem, however, by logging out and logging back in, in which the camera will be detected and will work.
How can I get it to automatically connect on insertion?
EDIT: Seems as if Arch Linux does detect it on insertion ("lsusb" shows "ALi corp.", which I believe is what the 'cam is based on), but it won't show up in Cheese, Opera, etc.

  • MacBook won't detect Toshiba 1T external hard drive

I just upgraded my operating system on my MacBook Pro and now my laptop won't detect my Toshiba 1T external hard drive, even though I've been using it before.  Any ideas?

Adam513, turned out the latest operating system doesn't read Microsoft formatted external hard drives the way it used to.  I had to purchase a new external hard drive, them find an apple computer with an older version operating system so I could transfer my files to the new external which is formatted for Mac.  The new external works fine and once I have all the files transferred, I'll reformat my old external hard drive.  Took me and the guy at the Genius Bar a while, but we finally figured this out.  Hope this helps!

  • IDVD still doesn't show up on my hard drive

I just upgraded to Tiger and I noticed that iDVD wasn't on my hard drive. I installed the iLife software and iDVD still doesn't show up on my hard drive; however, the rest of the software did.
    Please help!

    Hi Sharee,
Do a custom install of the iDVD application from the iLife DVD, see instructions: iLife '05: How to custom install applications.

  • How can I install Arch Linux on a software raid?

Hi Guys, I've been at this for 3 days now and I can't get it to work. Basically I have 2 500GB SATA HDDs and I want them both on a raid1 array. I had it working on Ubuntu with no issues but the installer did all the work for me. I have attempted to follow the instructions on the wiki for Raid and LVM but I quickly get lost and I don't understand the LVM stuff. I managed to get 2 arrays up (md0 for /boot and md1 for /) but I was contently running into errors trying to install grub. In my last attempt I somehow managed to get grub installed on /dev/sda and /dev/sdb but then when I reboot the system it fails to mount /dev/md0 or /dev/md1 these raid devices don't appear in the /dev/ directory and I cannot bring them up manually. I have been all over Google and I can't find a comprehensive guide to setting up a raid 1 array and installing Arch. If anyone can direct me to useful instructions or layout the procedure for me I would really appreciate it.
    Thank You.

This is genius, sheer brilliance. When I wanted to raid my Ubuntu install I specifically wanted to install a new HDD and just raid it with my existing disk but I had to download and alternate install CD and re-install the OS. I searched all over the net for an alternative and could not find anything. It's baffling that I had to start a thread to find such an insanely useful utility. Unless I'm taking the wrong approach. I mean, doesn't everybody raid if they can? Is there a better way to backup your disk? Why is it so difficult to find any useful information about raiding your disks? ... but I digress. Despite the fact that nobody else seems to know about this tool I know about it now and it seems to be the key to solving my problem. But I still have one problem. I have installed Arch on /dev/sda1. I downloaded (with wget), compiled, installed, and ran raider. I followed the on-screen instructions to the letter. When I swapped the disks and rebooted. I get pass the grub screen and get this error during boot.
    Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/md1 ...
Root device '/dev/md1' doesn't exist. attempting to creat it.
ERROR: Unable to determine major/minor number of root device '/dev/md1'.
You are being dropped to a recovery shell.
Type 'exit' to try and continue booting
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
    [ramfs /]#
I cannot type anything at this prompt. No response from the keyboard. I'm so close to getting this to finally work. Dose anyone know what might be going wrong.
Thank you guys for all your help.

  • Arch linux doesn't boot after installing AMD ATI Catalyst

I have a laptop which has a integrated graphic card intel 4th generation (4600) and an AMD ATI R9 m265x (hybrid Intel/AMD graphics card) so I have just installed AMD ATI Catalyst proprietary ones by following
    AMD Catalyst ArchWiki.
I have used "Installing from the unofficial repository" method so in my pacman.conf I have added below entry for [catalyst-stable]:
    [catalyst-stable]
    Server = http://catalyst.wirephire.com/repo/catalyst/$arch
    ## Mirrors, if the primary server does not work or is too slow:
    #Server = http://70.239.162.206/catalyst-mirror/repo/catalyst/$arch
    #Server = http://mirror.rts-informatique.fr/archlinux-catalyst/repo/catalyst/$arch
    #Server = http://mirror.hactar.bz/Vi0L0/catalyst/$arch
Then I have update pacman's database and install below packages:
    catalyst-hook
    catalyst-utils-pxp
    lib32-catalyst-utils-pxp
(No need to install catalyst-total-pxp as I have installed catalyst-utils-pxp)
After installing it, I have configured the driver, configuring X using below command:
    # aticonfig --initial
In order to use PowerXpress support I have installed catalyst-utils-pxp package plus additional lib32-catalyst-utils-pxp.
To perform a switch into Intel's IGP I have also installed the mesa-libgl  package and Intel's drivers: xf86-video-intel  and intel-dri .
I have enable the automatic update by enabling the catalyst-hook.service with below commands since it automatically rebuilds the fglrx modules while the system shuts down or reboots (so I haven't to do it manually each time kernel is updated using Catalyst-generator):
    # systemctl enable catalyst-hook
    # systemctl start catalyst-hook
And finally I have blacklisted radeon module by creating "/etc/modprobe.d/blacklisted.conf" file which content is:
    blacklist radeon
and also I have ensured that fglrx line is added in "/etc/modules-load.d/Catalyst.conf" file.
To avoid problems, I have rebuilt the fglrx module by doing (I know it is not necessary as it is done by catalyst-hook):
    catalyst_build_module all
Once I reboot, arch linux does not boot. Last lines printed out are below and then it freezes:
Starting temp files linker to catalyst...
    Starting Catalyst event Daemon...
[ OK ] Started Catalyst event Daemon
Starting Catalyst's fglrx kernel' module builder...
[ OK ] Started temp files linker for catalyst.
[ OK ] Started Catalyst's fglrx kernel' modue builder.
[ OK ] Started gnome Display manager.
[ OK ] Started Network manager.
    [ OK ] Reached target Multi-User system.
[ OK ] Reached target Graphical Interface.
[ OK ] Reached target Network.
I have tried to put nomodeset as a kernel parameter but it does not work. Also, after reading ArchWiki, I have noticed that it is recommended to don't do this as I am using catalyst-utils-pxp because intel driver needs it so I have removed nomodeset parameter from kernel but It continues not working.
    Any ideas?
    Package versions:
    Kernel version 3.17.6-1-ARCH
    catalyst-hook 14.12-1
    catalyst-utils-pxp 14.12-1
    lib32-catalyst-utils-pxp 14.12-1
    xorg-server 1.16.2.901-1
    xf86-video-intel 2.99.916-3

FInally I managed to boot arch linux.
    I had to downgrade xorg-server from 1.16.2.901-1 to 1.15.2-1.
It seems there is a problem with Catalyst 14.12-1 and xorg-server 1.16.2.901-1.
Also I had to replace desktop manager from gdm to lightdm as gdm raises segmentation faults using xorg-server versions 1.16.2.901-1 and 1.15.2-1.
Finally I had to add an entry in pacman.conf:
    [xorg115]
    Server = http://catalyst.wirephire.com/repo/xorg115/$arch
    ## Mirrors, if the primary server does not work or is too slow:
    #Server = http://mirror.rts-informatique.fr/archlinux-catalyst/repo/xorg115/$arch
    #Server = http://mirror.hactar.bz/Vi0L0/xorg115/$arch
    Then performs following actions:
    1)  # pacman -Syuu catalyst-hook catalyst-utils-pxp
    2) Uninstall all the packages xf86* such as xf86-video-intel, xf86-input-evdev,  xf86-input-synaptics, etc.
    3) Install the packages uninstalled in step 2 and install them again using xorg115 repo, for example, # pacman -S xorg115/xf86-video-intel xorg115/xf86-input-evdev xorg115/xf86-input-synaptics
I have put a comment here.

  • Arch Installation doesn't detect my Sata HD

i have a Sata connected 120 GB maxtor hard drive connected to a MSI Neo-2 motherboard ..
i downloaded the latest iso of arch, started the installation and in the partition section i have no hd to select the partitions from ...
    what's wrong ? please help me ..
    i'd love to install arch..
    p.s
i read all the sata related posts...

You may need to patch the kernel.  Try the arch-scsi option though.
I have a patched kernel for SII 3512.  I had to install to an ide drive, patch and recompile the kernel, then transfer to my SATA drive (/dev/hde)

  • What files do I need to download iPhone photos to a thin client (HP)? Apple Mobile Support gives 4 dll files to enable the iPhone to be detected and charged but the thin client doesn't see the camera or hard drive.

The iTunes Installation files include 4 driver dlls that I can install on a Windows thin client to enable the iPhone to be charged.
The iPhone hard drive or photos are not detected.  I guess I need scanner driver support to cope with the camera.
Can anyone tell me which files from the iTune installation set are needed.
It is not practical (or even possible?) to install the whole iTunes package.
I've seen this question asked by a lot of people but never seen an answer.
    Please, can someone help...

    Thanks for the reply.
A thin client is used to connect to a Terminal Server, or in my customer's case, a Citrix Server.  I need the thin client to see the iPhone as a camera and pass it to the Citrix Client so the photos can THEN be either stored on a network storage device, or e-mailed.
Because the thin client doesn't even SEE a camera (i.e. the iPhone) it won't be able to connect to iCloud to do anything useful.
I think the question I should be asking, is how do I give the thin client Camera Support.
I've just seen a 2008 forum comment that said the iPhone DOESN'T handle photos through iTunes, but the PC (Scanner support) or MAC (iPhoto) handles them directly.  I should be putting the question to HP.
This is still a good place for THIS question, because I've seen so many iPhone users asking it...
If I get a satisfactory answer I'll post it back here.

  • Acccessing un-bootable SAS hard drive in Z600

    Hihi all,
Yesterday my trusted Z600 workstation finally started acting up after 4yrs+ abuse.
It was not able to boot into Windows, "system disk not detected", & it try to boot optical drive.
We managed to get hold of another working Z600.
So i thought the remaining will be the easy part to transfer the old files into the new workstation.
Unfortunately the hard disk is a SAS type (dual drives for backup) & we couldnt find a connector to slave it at all.
I have a bunch of bigger cad & pst files in the C-Drive which is not backed up...
Is there anyway to extract this data out from one of the dual hard drive???
I believe the data is still inside, maybe just some corrupted windows file causing it not to boot
    Thanks!

  • IMac doesn't recognise any USB external hard drives

    2011 iMac running on OS X 10.7.5
    1. I have tried 3 different hard drives now and none of them work on iMac but all work on Macbook Pro
    2. Not appearing anywhere - evenin in Disc Utility
    3. Tried to remove all other USB's in use and still no joy
    4. Tried to turn computer off and remove power for 10 mins and still no joy.
    5. The one I want it to work for is Seagate Backup Plus but like the others just doesn't see it.
Can anyone give any further advice?

Thanks BDAqua I tried your solution as I mentioned in point 4 or my initial discussion but this did not work.
I only have a USB do you think I should buy a firewire cable and try that?
My USB works for everything I've tried apart from portable hard discs.
The firewire bug link you sent is obviously for firewire issues so I assume I don't need to read this until I have tried a firewire cable?
What do you mean by this statement "If so, I suspect the AC PSU if it has one."?
I'm not technical so couldn't understand the acronyms or how this statment tied in with the previous instructions.
Thanks again for taking the time to help me

  • Raid array removed, hard drives now wont work?? help

    Hi all,
I had a KT266 pro2RU motherobard with 2 ibm 40gig hard drives that were in raid mode 0,
I took the 2 drives out of the computer and wanted to use one of them in another computer on a standard drive controller (single drive not raid) and i cant seem to access the disk to format it or install windows xp on it?, it keeps saying write access denied?,
I am thinking that i should have unmounted? the raid array before taking the drives out to put them back to normal but dont have the raid system any more, is there any way i can make these 2 40 gig drives work now?, or has it overwritten the HD bios or something?
If anyone can help i'd appreciate it
    Cheers

i would try fdisk on it or partition magic if you have that
http://www.bootdisk.com will get you an me boot disk has f disk

  • Slow file access-Elements 12:  I store all my photo files (".nef" RAW files) in a RAID 1 external hard drive, which the Elements Organizer links to the reference thumbnails.  Over some time - say, the past year, and especially recently, the time to bring

One further bit of information:  I did recently run a "disc scan", in case there were file system errors, then ran defragmentation -- on the external drive.  This did not solve the problem.

I think I'll deal with your different questions in several posts, it'll be easier for me.
    josephunit2n a écrit:
A few comments:  recently, for the first time, I did a full "backup catalog" routine (with external RAID storage connected) to a second external usb drive, which ran successfully (done, at the time, over longstanding concern that even the RAID 1 storage was not enough data security - as you have mentioned).
Good thing, and it's not really a surprise for me, I would have expected no slow down in a process which only reads your RAID drive data.
One big concern:  in all transactions (backup catalog; move to external storage) I always ignore the "reconnect missing files" dialogue.  This is due to past experience.  Long ago, when I ran it routinely, it was a disaster.  At first, I thought I might reconnect a few randomly missing files.  While this was so long ago I cannot recall all details, everything went to hell.  Even after manually locating a "missing" file,  the "reconnect" never worked.  The number of "missing" files skyrocketed, far out of any realistic number.  Even with Adobe phone support (which is critical for such an application - and must be made available again, I have no problem paying for it), the catalog was hopelessly corrupt, and I manually built a new catalog, file-by-file.  Adobe advice then:  NEVER USE "RECONNECT MISSING FILES", which I have followed religiously (while also trying to be meticulous in my transactions, not to ever create any "missing" files).
I have never read Adobe advising to never reconnect missing files. Maybe it's not the best course in all circumstances, but I don't see a possible problem there. What is recommended by Adobe is to always reconnect files before doing a backup... Now, my own experience is that if you don't reconnect before a backup you get a restoration where the catalog still points to missing files and where those missing files have not been backed up, totally logical. I would not consider this question as a BIG concern.
.  Finally, "just for fun", moments ago I connected the RAID storage drive, opened the organizer, and randomly opened a few images in "full screen" view - then opened a scattered group of 4 or 5 images -- and, they all came up promptly!!!!!  So, this "slow access" problem isn't consistent, all the time.  Also, I must comment, your advice to avoid the RAID 1 external usb drive, for future catalog storage, seems "tech superstition", which I will not harshly criticize, as I also have my own technology irrational superstitions.  I believe the computer "sees" this drive no differently than any other external, usb, drive.
There's a difference between 'technology irrational superstition' and 'reasonable doubt due to ignorance' ... Understanding the problems which may arise when using a RAID drive array supposes understanding of:
    - how the organizer catalog recognizes any drive in its database. That's ok for me, but I have no personal experience of such systems. What I can tell you is that most of the problems I have seen with RAID systems were of that kind.
    - How efficiently the organizer deals with the OS when using a catalog stored on the main drive, with adequate RAM and scratch disk space while the files themselves are on the external RAID drive. Some organizing tasks imply writing to the files themselves. The xmp sidecar files (very small) are stored together with their raw parent. The thumbnails are stored in a database in the catalog folder...
    - How the organizer works with the OS (the APIs) and the particular disk driver. (I am totally ignorant, but I have seen similar problems for other Adobe applications in the feedback forum).
... As I said, I have to leave for a moment...
    To be continued!

  • My new 24in imac doesn't recognize my usb external hard drive- snow leopard

i was attempting to do a new time machine back up on my new mac but it won't recognize the usb external hard drive (kaser 250gb). i used it frequently on my old g5 imac, no problems. i plugged the hard drive into my g4 ibook and it recognized it right away. i followed the apple tip of pulling the power plug out of the wall power socket and pulled all the usb cables out as well (i have the wireless keyboard). i let it rest for over 5 minutes and only plugged in my wacom stylus and usb external hard drive. still nothing. and it doesn't show either in disk utility. i also downloaded as per another thread the 3g ntfs system preference but to no avail. the only thing i can of doing is erase and reformat my external on my ibook, but i don't want to risk loosing the data without a back up.
anything else i can try? (before i buy time capsule) thanks

i just checked again by plugging the external into my ibook g4 and checked how it was formatted - mac os extended (journaled).
Then the 3GFS software is not required at all.
i have an idea, not sure if it will work and it will have to wait a couple days until i get my firewire back from a friend, but this is what i'm thinking: my intel imac has a 1tb hard drive. could i use target mode between my imac and ibook? with my ibook i'd attach the external hard drive, then using the firewire and target mode start it up. hoping that the ibook hard drive and the attached external hard drive would show on my intel mac for which i could copy over the external back ups onto my imac. once completed, i could erase and reformat the external on my ibook and then try again on my imac to see if it appears on my desktop. do you think this might work (even though it is correctly formatted already?)
I use Target mode on a regular basis for mounting the internal drive on a Mac to transfer or salvage data. I don't know if you will be able to connect to an external drive on the Target computer. There's not usually any reason for this and I don't know if the Target Mode will enable the Logic board to deal with the USB ports and transfer data. I kinda doubt it, but other more experienced users can jump in here.
I don't think the problem with your external drive is the format, since you've already checked it and it is already formatted for a Mac. Intel Mac's will mount drives formatted by a PPC Mac with no problems, unless your OS doesn't support the chipset in the USB case that connects to the drive. There are some USB drives that are known to not work well with SL but worked fine with Leopard.
You can buy a cheap USB case (about $30) and move the drive from the old case to the new case, or buy a USB to IDE adaptor cable (about $20), or you can buy a larger external drive that will work on the iMac and use the G4 to transfer the date from the old drive to a new one. Or you can take both drives to a friend with a Mac and use Disk Utility to restore the USB drive to a partition on the Firewire drive. That doesn't fix the USB drive to work with your new Mac, but unless the vendor comes out with a firmware fix, I think that's a lost cause anyway.
other than the above, i may just go buy a 1tb time capsule,
I would not be getting a Time Capsule to back up a single computer. Wireless backups are a lot slower than FireWire or USB (of course, it's the initial backup that takes so much time). If you do have several Mac's that need a TM backup volume, then the Capsule can help you out. It is supported by Apple (and there are a lot of users here in the forums). I'm using a ReadyNAS device for network backups, but it is not supported by Apple, and I have to rely on NetGear for fixes if an OS update breaks my backup system.
BTW, it's a good chance that a TC device will be able to see and mount your USB drive. The incompatible chipset problem with some drives seems to be limited to the USB drivers in SL which the TC is not running. That's why I said that a USB hub may also let you see your drive, the problem is there's no guarantee's...

  • Xserve RAID all 14 hard drive lights yellow

    Hey guys,
I just bought a used Xserve RAID to go with my Xserve G5 cluster node. All 14 of the hard drive lights are yellow. Any one have any idea what's going on? Previously, most of them were green with a few yellows. After restarting the Xserve RAID they are now all yellow.

    Hey zacharyziegler,
The Yellow status light usually means the Lock is engaged. For more information, see the following User Guide (pg 46):

  • Does a RAIDed set of hard drives help project load/save time?

My editor has a project way above the '100 mb' recommended limit. Right now around 230 MB i believe. But I've also heard of people who have **3-4 GB** project files!! How on earth do they efficiently work in it?
My editor's project file takes a long time to load, save, autosave, and her FCP crashes occasionally, always during saving/autosaving. She has FCP installed on one hard drive, her project files located on a seperate hard drive. Not sure of speeds, but both have at least ~40% free space.
If she had like a RAID array, the one where you take 2 drives to make one big one with a theoretical 'double' write/read time, and she put her project file on that, would that speed things up? If she had 2 sets of that RAID configuration (what is it?), put her applications (inc. FCP) on one array, her project files on another, would that speed things up even more?
Also, we have all our media on a SAN connected to the editors through gigabit ethernet. Could this be slowing things down in anyway?

RAIDs get you faster read/write times with your MEDIA. They will not help with your project issues. Do what Randy suggested. Multiple project files are the key.
Raided drives get you more RT effects with media, and allow you to work with uncompressed formats. Nothing to help out slow projects.
    RAM, Processor...and smaller project files.
