Arch Linux minimum requirements and recommended?

I'm setting up my shop and I need to know the minimum requirements for Arch Linux. Processor speed? Hard drive space? I know that the RAM is 64MB...

Taken from the installation guide
What You Will Need
     * a working knowledge of Linux and your system, especially your
       hardware
     * Arch Linux installation media (see the mirror list)
          + Arch Linux Install CD
     * an i686-based or x86-64 computer (PPro, Pentium 2 or higher, Athlon/Duron,
etc. Note that AMD K6, Transmeta Crusoe, CyrixIII, and VIA-C3 are
       NOT supported.)
     * 128 MB RAM
     * some time to kill
hope that helps

  • Final Cut Studio 2: Requirements and Recommendations

Hello Final Cut Studio 2 Experts,
I'm considering purchasing Final Cut Studi 2, and to make sure that I'll benefit from the full range of specific application (FCS/motion/color...) and I'd like to ask few questions (5 main points) regarding requirements and recommendations. So, please be prepared for much reading as I am not an expert on the matter. I like to know if my computer accepts any further hardware parts highly recommended and if I can purchase and install them myself. And yes, you should also know that I intend to use a Panasonic multi-format (HD/SD) camera for capturing and exporting videos.
N.B. Please note that the full list of my Hardware contents appear at the bottom of this text.
THANKS IN ADVANCE for your expert advise!

  • Install Arch Linux with UEFI and GPT

Hi, I purchased a new laptop and I created a partition with Windows 8 (default OS on laptop) and another partition where I want to install Arch Linux.
When I tried to install Arch Linux not boot from CD. After searching in Google I downloaded the latest Arch Linux ISO (2012-12-01) and tried again.
This time CD started without problems but when I used cfdisk showed an error with GPT partition. I went back to search in Google and I read about gdisk and gfdisk and I try it but when I partitioning to install Arch Linux partition show that may cause damage. I searched and searched without success and I wonder if there is a Arch Linux GPT install guide or if someone knows how to install Arch Linux with GPT and a Windows 8 partition in UEFI.
    Thanks and regards.

Hi again, finally I got "install" Arch Linux but when I reboot the follow message appears:
"No Booteable Device, Hit any key."
I don't know if I broke Windows Boot Manager, UEFI or both...
I tried to reinstall GRUB but was unsuccessful.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks and regards.

  • One question about arch linux 2009.02 and ext4

    hi,
i want to download newest arch linux version. i heard i can select file system type as ext4, that sounds cool, because i really want ext4. anyway i heard that you need grub2 to properly boot ext4 arch system. so is grub2 will be included in arch linux 09.02? because my root partition is going to be in ext4 file system. thanks for help

syms wrote:Thanks for help. i have one more question - how much ext4 seems faster than ext3? i mean do you feel that ext4 is faster than ext3 in most cases? thanks.
I've never done any benchmarks, but I can tell you that file system checks are many, many times faster.
I do have a warning though, and it can be confirmed by others in this forum: ext4 does not crash gracefully right now. If you're on an unstable system, crashing can cause the loss of at least configuration files. My workstation is rock solid, so I've never seen any issues. Another computer that I was working on was having crashes due to an older Intel card with the newer xorg, and configuration files were being killed all over the place.
Thanks. another thing is that about application start up. for example for me firefox starts in 4 seconds, when i close ff and try to run it again, it opens in about 1 second. what it would with ext4 system? maybe it would launch in 2 seconds at first start?
It's hard to guess like that, but it's bound to be the same or faster. You're not losing anything going ext4 and it is a faster filesystem in general.

  • [SOLVED]Arch Linux, and Windows 8.1 Dual Boot issue

Hi guys. I recently bought a new laptop, and decided to run Arch Linux and Windows 8.1. I installed Windows 8.1 first as recommended by the beginners guide, and then installed Arch Linux. I made sure UEFI was enabled in my BIOS, and made sure everything was on a GPT partition. The install itself went fine. My laptop loads grub, and Arch Linux shows up and boots, but there is no option to boot into Windows 8.1. The only way I can boot into Windows 8.1 is by accessing my motherboard, and choosing to launch the windows boot manager instead of the grub launcher. How can I get Windows 8.1 to show up in grub? Thanks in advance guys.

Yeah just ran this after installing os prober
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
and it works now. Sorry for the crazy posts guys. Thanks for the suggestions and help.
Yeah I'm sure I'm doing something wrong lol. I did not install OS-Prober. I think that's where the issue is. I'm missing the menu entry in grub.cfg right? Do I just run os prober or do I have to manually edit grub.cfg.
If that's not the case then here is what I did up until now. What I did was start with a blank SSD drive. I used cgdisk to make the disk use a GPT partitioning scheme. I installed windows 8.1 and checked in windows to make sure it boots into UEFI-GPT mode and it does.  I then installed arch linux using the beginners guide. I made sure to use cgdisk to create any extra partitions, and installed GRUB to the efi partition that windows had created ( I did not format this partition ). I then finished the installation and rebooted, and Grub only shows arch linux. I don't think I'm dealing with anything MBR related. I made sure I used the GPT partitioning scheme....i think lol.
All you need to do is run os-prober then run grub-mkconfig. It should pick up Windows at that point.

  • Dual boot Windows 7 (64) and Arch Linux (64) problems

    Hello:
I am new to Arch Linux and just finished installing the 64bit on my laptop. It had a prebuilt Windows 7 (64) installed which I kept but split the hdd from 160Gb to 80Gb and 80Gb. I installed Arch there and set 4 partitions, all of them as Logical - a 64 MB ext2 /boot partition; a 512 MB swap partition; a 15 GB root partition; and the rest as my /home partition. My partitions look like this:
    Disk Drive: /dev/sda
    Size: 160041885696 bytes, 160.0 GB
Heads: 255 Sectors per Track: 63 Cylinders: 19457
Name Flags Part Type FS Type [Label] Size (MB)
    sda1 Primary Unknown (27) 12889.02
    sda2 Boot Primary NTFS 106.93
    sda3 Primary NTFS [] 73915.11*
    sda5 Logical Linux ext2 65.81*
    sda6 Logical Linux 509.97*
    sda7 Logical Linux ext2 15002.92*
    sda8 Logical Linux ext2 57549.55*
The install was succesful(this was running from the core install cd) and I installed GRUB to my /boot but when I restarted it loaded Windows 7. I have used Knoppix USB disc to boot and see my Arch Linux install files and edited the /boot/gur/menu.lst file.
In Windows I installed EasyBCD 1.7.2 and tried to get NeoGrub bootloader working as a dual boot. I tried getting rid of the boot flag for Windows with cfdisk and setting it to my (Logical) sda5. That did not work. So far the only way I have booted into my Arch Linux install has been by going to the Live CD, choosing "Boot from Existing Linux Install" and editing the command files there.
    root (hd0,4)
    kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda3 ro
    initrd /kernel26.img
My goal is to get a dual boot working for Windows 7 and Arch Linux 64 and continue installing the Xorg and KDE to Arch. I just don't know what the problem is here. I don't mind reinstalling Arch if something went wrong, but I would like to keep my Windows running in order and add Arch on.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I ran the LiveCD and chose "Install to MBR hd0". I ended up with this:
    setup hd(0,1)
    Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists.....yes
    Checking if "/boot/grub/iso9660_stage1_5" exists.....yes
Running "embed /boot/grub/iso9660_stage1_5 (hd0,1)".....failed(this is not fatal)
Running "embed /boot/grub/iso9660_stage1_5 (hd16)".....failed(this is not fatal)
    Running "install /boot/grub/stage1 d (hd0,1) /boot/grub/stage2 p (hd0,1) boot/grub/menu.lst".....failed
Error 31: File is not sector aligned
My entry for Windows into the menu.lst looks like this:
    # (0) Arch Linux x64
    title Arch Linux x64
    root (hd0,4)
    kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/3841273c-d91e-41d6-9dbf-716a15d03a01 ro

  • Arch Linux and ARM

We have been talking to the Arch Linux ARM team and have decided to refine our policy around that architecture.
The Other Architectures forum has been moved into the Technical Issues and Asssistance category, and the ARM sticky has been updated with clearer direction about our policy.
If you are an ARM user, please take a couple of minutes to familiarize yourself with the updated policy. Both the Arch mod team and the ALARM team feel that this is the best way to ensure that assistance is sought from the community that is best placed to help.

Whoa, everyone's reading far too much into what I said.  I just meant that I got it installed under the chroot in android following the steps that were on the plugapps site; the actual page doesn't seem to exist anymore, but I found similar instructions here.  I meant that I thought it was cool that I had a functioning build of pacman running locally on the device.  Didn't mean to imply that it was a native install.
Although I understand the reaction as I'm watching the developments in this thread with just as much anticipation.

  • Installed arch linux on windows 8 laptop and with GNOME

    Hi all,
I am trying to learn more about linux and decided to go the Arch Linux way. I've battled through a bunch of issues before I got to this point so I might have fudged something along the way.
The current issue is that I install GNOME, and it boots up into GNOME, and I select my username and type my password, and then I see black screen with blinking cursor for 10 seconds after which I am returned to GNOME login screen. It doesn't do a system reboot before going back to the login screen.
The only way to stop this is to put in my livecd arch-linux usb drive and then delete GNOME, after which arch linux will boot back into terminal. (I wish I knew how to do this without using the usb drive)
What should I look at for hints? I don't see any output when this loop happens.
    Thanks!

Ok that works and I can log in. However I don't see any familiar drives mounted. Anyway, I have the output from journalctl. Here it is

There has to be a better way to post a debug manage on here.

  • Incorporating both Arch Linux and a package repository onto one DVD.

    Dear Arch Linux community,
I would like to tell you a little background information about myself before I start to talk about my actual subject. I know that this part of my message does not belong here, but it is my own ritual to do it like this in my first message in every community. I hope I can make friends with people here and try not to harm this community in any way. Thank you for reading this.
I am a 16-year-old male student from Finland and addicted to GNU/Linux and freeware / open source software. My previous experience with GNU/Linux is fairly large; from thin client Debian GNU/Linux administrator to kernel hacker and software developer. My delight is music, particularly writing and composing my own music tracks which vary from classic chiptunes to acid trance and dance beats. Arch Linux seems to be a great GNU/Linux operating system for me, because I am looking for a GNU/Linux distribution that does not focus on desktop, but rather on simplicity and lightweight solutions. I also do not fear "bleeding edge" software which is a positive point for Arch Linux compared to Debian GNU/Linux. As you can probably notice I have been using Debian GNU/Linux before I considered Arch Linux. However now I am here hoping for a totally new experience from Arch Linux.
Enough with my foreword, I would like to now go back to the actual subject. Usually I use DVD media for GNU/Linux images to have both the installer for the GNU/Linux distribution and the main package repository to make installations faster and to have the possibility for an offline installation. As I see, Arch Linux provides only CD images which are approximately 160MB in size, making me to think about incorporating Arch Linux's "Core" and "Extra" package repositories to fill up the remaining 4GB on the DVD. If the "Core" package repository is already included in the Arch Linux CD image, please forgive my lack of information as this is the first time I have ever entered to the world of Arch Linux.
My question is as follows: Is it possible to incorporate Arch Linux and a package repository onto one DVD while retaining the ability to install Arch Linux from that DVD? If positive, how should I go on to do it?
    Thank you in advance!

    No niin, tervetuloa arch-mailmaan.
Ok, I better stop at one sentence before someone gets mad at me .
To answer your question, yes. It is quite possible to put something like that together, heck I think someone suggested we should distribute those some time, but we decided not to (don't quote me, I'm too lazy to read the archives right now) since in most cases pacman will get the job done will job done with less bandwidth waste, and distributing huge snapshots isn't really too conducive to the whole rolling-release thing.
You might want to check out archiso [1], the install scripts [2], and one of my sample archiso configurations [3] that effectively creates an install CD. Now, keep in mind that archiso isn't the *current* way installers are created, but I think it's much more straightforward to work with than what we're using right now. That said, we currently use archboot to create the CDs, so that may be worth taking a look at as well. There is also a really old installer remastering wiki article [4], though not terribly relevant, you could still use a similar technique to pull apart one of our recent install iso's and remaster it with whatever packages you want. Anyhow, if you'd like help with this, I'd be more than happy to give you a hand (I need some more test-cases for archiso...), or if you look at it and go "gee, this is dumb", don't be afraid to send patches. Just get in touch with me through email, jabber, irc, or whatever.
    Good luck

  • Debtap - A script to convert .deb packages to Arch Linux packages

I wrote this script in my free time to help people who, for any reason, want to convert a .deb to an Arch Linux package. It works in a similar way with alien (which converts .deb packages to .rpm packages and vice versa), but, unlike alien, it is focused on accuracy of conversion, trying to translate Debian/Ubuntu packages names to the correct Arch Linux packages names and store them in the dependencies fields of the .PKGINFO metadata in the final package. In other words, it won't only create an Arch package with the data of the original .deb package, but also it will try to create a valid and as accurate as possible .PKGINFO metadata file in the converted package. It uses pkgfile and pacman utilities to achieve this accuracy. The final package can be installed like any local Arch Linux package. Debtap is now available on AUR!
    FAQ
    Q: What "debtap" stands for?
A: DEB To Arch (Linux) Package
Q: Isn't better to download an official package or write a PKGBUILD in case I need to compile a package or convert a .deb package to an Arch Linux package?
A: Sure it is, and I truely encourage you to do so. Debtap was written to create packages that either cannot be compiled (closed source packages) or cannot be built from AUR for various reasons (error during compiling or unavailable files), as a quick 'n' dirty solution and an extra option for creating Arch Linux packages for Arch Linux users.
Q: So debtap will help me only in case I need to convert specific .deb packages to Arch Linux packages?
A: No. In case you need to write a new PKGBUILD for a package that already exists in the Debian/Ubuntu distributions, by converting its .deb package to Arch package with debtap, thanks to the packages names translator function inside the script, it can help you determine which dependencies are needed for the package you write the PKGBUILD for and complete the necessary fields.
Q: What are the minimum requirements to run this script?
A: You need to have installed these dependencies: bash, binutils (provides ar utility for extracting .deb package), pkgfile, and fakeroot. You must run at least once (preferably recently) "debtap -u" to create/update pkgfile and debtap database (you do this with root privileges).
Q: Debtap needs a lot of time to convert a package. So, why this is happening?
A: Like I said, debtap is focused on accuracy. It won't just unpack a .deb package and then repackage its data to an Arch Linux package, ignoring metadata. Depending on the speed of your processor and the package itself, conversion can take from a few seconds to several minutes.
Q: During conversion I get several warning messages, why?
A: Debtap cannot be 100% accurate for several reasons,  the main reason for this is the complexity of packages names. If you want to check the freshly generated .PKGINFO and .INSTALL (this is optional file) metadata files or even fix the untranslated packages names inside .PKGINFO, debtap offers you the option to edit these files before compressing the final package.
Q: How do I use debtap?
A: The syntax is quite simple actually: debtap [option] package_filename
    For example: debtap world-of-goo-demo_1.0_i386.deb
Any recommendations or questions for debtap are welcomed!

  • Kernel do not meet the minimum requirements

    Hello,
I am installing Oracle AS Infrastructure.
My overall system checkup was fine but of kernel has following message.
checking for hardnofiles = 65536 found hardnofiles = 1024 Failed
    checking for softnofiles = 4096; softnofiles = 1024
    Problem:
The security parameters in the kernel do not meet the minimum requirements.
Recommendation: Perform OS System specific instruction to update kernel parameter, namely BIT_SIZE and NON_EXEC_USER_STACK.
After that I have checked /etc/security/limits.conf file values were correct.
    But my /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_local_port_range
    values were 1024 65000 --
they are correct in sysctl.conf file
But any way I have fixed that.
    Also /pro/sys/kernel/shmni was 1000, so I make it 4096
Actually in the start of setting up requirements,
I have tried to make changes of kernel through /proc/sys/.....
But after that I have created sysctl.conf file and put all recommended values and restart the system.
    So I continue installation.
    Is it ok?

  • Arch Linux MailServer, Point the Way, Please

    Hi guys,
Hope you still remember me, long time no write,
I have been using Arch Linux as a Desktop for years, but have never played much with using it as a server. Now I have my own company and so since I work in the Technology area who better to make the servers for my company than I?
Here is the thing, I have already an Arch Linux WebServer running, and I want to have a MailServer too running on the same machine, just because I have always wanted to, and because the SSL certification I'm trying to get requires an @mydomain.com email for it to be the approver of the SSL, thats why I need to do this. I have two options:
This wiki entry, for Postfix or this entry of a simple mail server
Guys, since I'm new to this, can you point the way that I should follow?
    -Thanks in advance,

They both look pretty similar... For a 'simple' / 'traditional' mail server, you can't go wrong with Postfix and friends. I have been running an Arch-based mail server for a couple of years now (hosted @Linode) using Postfix (PostgreSQL Virtual Users) and Dovecot. SQLGrey is pretty much the only anti-spam I have on it and we get very few spam across the 30 or so domains the server handles.
