Arch Linux RSS feeds

Does anyone else experience inconsistencies with the RSS feeds?
Here are some examples:
http://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra/i686/git/
git 1.7.4.4-1 Build Date: April 7, 2011, 1:44 a.m. UTC Last Updated: 2011-04-06
In my feed reader it shows as: Date: Mon, 28 Mar 2011 05:04:24 +0300 and it never got marked as new package.
http://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra/i686/pango/ (this is the top package on the RSS feed right now)
pango 1.28.4-2 Build Date: April 7, 2011, 10:58 a.m. UTC Last Updated: 2011-04-07
In my feed reader it shows as: Date: Tue, 05 Apr 2011 01:04:32 +0300 and it never got marked as new package either.
I have also noticed that the same thing happens to the RSS feeds from the bugtracker as well.
For example https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/23512 was closed on Monday, 04 April 2011, 23:06 GMT+2
In my feed reader it shows as: Date: Wed, 30 Mar 2011 11:48:50 +0300 (in the closed items feed) .Never got marked as new again.
The news reader i use is newsbeuter but i remember similar behaviour from liferea as well. Does anyone else get the same?
One way of verifying such a behaviour would be checking the above three examples.

That's nice, But I'm finding about notification only.. no want ticker :\
Maybe you know how I can get this works in gnome-shell?

• Arch Linux Packages RSS Feed [solved]

Hello all.
Excuse me, but I have no idea in which forum I have to post this.
Since yesterday, the Arch Linux Packages RSS Feed is giving me this error:
XML Parsing Error: not well-formed
Location: http://www.archlinux.org/rdf_feed.php
Line Number 75, Column 42:
TCP wrappers (hosts.deny & hosts.allow) access control for Apache

-----------------------------------------^
How can I notify that to the webmaster?
Thanks in advance.

The RSS Feed is working properly again.
Thanks! :-)

• How do I get the RSS feeds to work in iWeb'08 when published to FTP server?

There are so many unresolved questions because I have published to an FTP server (Netfirms). HOWEVER, my next task at hand is to resolve the issue of a non-working RSS feed and download capabilities.
The published website is www.vibrationalvoyages.com.
When using Cyberduck to upload to Netfirms, I have to call the file name vibrationalvoyages.com because Netfirms organizes my files under a main folder called www (I also purchased the .org and .net extensions along with the singular spelling of the title, have forwarded those url's to the .com extension, which means I have different website names under Netfirm's main folder www, all pointing to www.vibrationalvoyages.com).
I have to drop the www. in front of vibrationalvoyages.com when publishing to a folder on my computer so, when Cyberduck uploads the files into the main www folder, they are read correctly and published as www.vibrationalvoyages.com. In Cyberduck, the ftp address to upload is vibrationalvoyage.netfirms.com
Before uploading, I use iTweak to insert the Statcounter tracking codes. Then, I use Rage to optimize the site to cut down on the weight (lots of photos). Then, finally, I get to upload which takes about an hour and a half.
SO, HOW DO I GET THE RSS FEEDS TO WORK AS WELL AS THE OPTION TO DOWNLOAD AN MP3 RECORDED MEDITATIONS? I eventually also want to include the download option of podcasts.
Please help! I am doing the best I can to stay in love with Mac but he is turning out to be a pot load of work and the love affair is wearing a little thin.
I haven't even asked about why iWeb still calls some pages 'The family picnic" or why it switches the url addresses to the individual pages. Probably because in the early stages, I copied an entry rather than just do a new one... but I'll worry about that later. I want to get this 'fixed' first and then I'll address the issue, following Roddy's advice to another writer about installing a flash player, for easy download of the MP3 meditations and for when I record the lessons as podcasts. Until I get this RSS issue resolved, however, podcast downloads are out of the question!

Thank you for checking, Tom,
I'm confused. What do YOU get when you push the feed button? And why is it working on yours and not either of my machines?
Today, my Mac (w/Safari 4) gets the same error message: Safari can’t open the page Safari can’t open the page “feed:http://vibrationalvoyages/vibrationalvoyages.com/DivineLight_Vibrations_Principles_andApplications/rss.xml”. The error is: “The feed could not be loaded because the content is not in a known feed format.”
My little ASUS (with a Linux operating system) gets a screen that says "The requested URL was not found". The URL on that page is http://vibrationalvoyages./vibrationalvoyages.com/DivineLight_Vibrations_Principles_andApplications/rss.xml
On both error messages, the URL I was checking was:
http://www.vibrationalvoyages.com/DivineLight_Vibrations_Principles_and_Applications/Divine_Light_Vibrations_Principles_ andApplications.html
The last URL was, of course, the URL generated by iWeb.
So, my question still is:
HOW CAN I GET MY FEEDS TO WORK PROPERLY? If the problem is there shouldn't be an http:// after feed: then, how do I get iWeb to set it up properly?
Any ideas?

• Rss feed in my movie

hey guy's i am using 2 component's from flashloaded...
flashticker and rss feed... i am presently on a linux server at
godaddy... for some reason it is not working... on a hunch i just
put the url of my website with the php file and this is the error i
am getting....this is a valid xml fee....i tried 2 ( one being on a
different site of mine working fine )... from looking at the info
below - i need to get with godaddy right and have them enable the
server to allow the calling of the feed ...right ?
Warning: readfile(): URL file-access is disabled in the
server configuration in
/home/content/d/g/g/dggowen/html/mortgagedaily.php on line 6
Warning: readfile(
http://MortgageDaily.com/rss.xml):
failed to open stream: no suitable wrapper could be found in
/home/content/d/g/g/dggowen/html/mortgagedaily.php on line 6

This points out the need for a robust XSLT library or
component. Does anyone know of such an animal? Having to write code
to parse XML nodes and wrap formatting tags around the returned
data seems fairly ... hmmm ... archaic. And sorting and filtering
that data ... again, just more manual coding for what should be
routine functionality. Sometimes it just isn't possible or
appropriate to flip the data back for a serverside transformation
(particularly desktop AIR apps running offline). Having at least
some minimal set of XSLT functionality would make Flash a much more
appealing medium for me. Anyone have recommendations beyond "code
it yourself"?

• Kalu: Keeping Arch Linux Up-to-date

Hi all,
Yes, there are already a few “update notifier” out there, but I couldn’t find one that would fit my needs (granted I didn’t search too hard, I was also interested in making my own as a fun exercice…) so I decided to make a new one.
kalu (which could stand for “Keeping Arch Linux Up-to-date”) is a small application that will add an icon to your systray and sit there, regularly checking if there’s anything new for you to upgrade. As soon as it finds something, it’ll show a notification to let you know about it. (In other words, revolutionary. )
What kalu can check for:
- updated packages (A word about this: kalu does not sync your "actual" databases, to avoid potential problems, but instead uses temporary copies of the dbs.)
- updated watched packages (i.e. packages not installed, but for which you still wanna know when there's an update)
- updated AUR packages
- updated watched AUR packages (same as watched ones, but for AUR packages. Who would've guessed?)
- news (from archlinux.org)
(on its tooltip, kalu can also report how many (if any) dbs can be synced)
When system/AUR upgrades are available, notifications can include a button to start the system/AUR upgrades. You can specify the command line to be executed when the button is clicked.
And for the fun of it, it comes with an integrated "system updater," to do what `pacman -Syu` does but in a GTK GUI. Because why not? Also, I wanted one. :-)
The system updater can also execute one (or more) command lines of your choice after a successfull upgrade, and you can use a variable ($PACKAGES) to be replaced by the list of upgraded packages. (Note that the list actually is of all packages involved in the sysupgrade, i.e. also those removed or added, e.g. when a package is replaced by another one.)
If you don't like it/the idea of a graphical system updater, and not using it isn't enough, you can use configure option --disable-updater and turn kalu into a notifier only.
From v1.1.0 onwards, two command line options - --manual-checks (-m) and --auto-checks (-a) - allow to run manual/auto checks from command line. No GUI will be used at all, everything gets printed on stderr/stdout (using the same templates as for notifications).
This can be done without the need for a DISPLAY/running X server (i.e. no GTK init performed), thus works from a tty or through SSH. This can also be useful to use kalu from scripts.
Alongside those options is a configure option (--disable-gui) to make kalu a small CLI-only binary (i.e. no dependency to GTK nor libnotify), which could be useful on GUIless box (e.g. servers), where kalu can then still be used to check for upgrades, watched packages, etc
With v1.2.0 it is now possible to have kalu re-show the last notifications. So if you missed them or forgot what it was about, one click will re-show all notifications instantly without the need to ran the checks again. And, somewhat similarly to what happens after a system upgrade using kalu's updater, you can now use variable $PACKAGES on the command line to perform AUR updates. Can be useful to start some helper/script to handle the update of those packages automatically for you.
Also note that kalu's source code (and issue tracker) has been moved to a git repo (was mercurial before), and is now hosted on github.
Thanks to Painless Rob for his great icons.

• Torss - downloads selected torrents from RSS feeds

I often have a problem with various private torrent trackers that by the time I add to torrent to my client it has already been active for a long time and I struggle to maintain a good ratio. As such I wanted something which could scrape the tracker's RSS feed, find torrents that match various patterns and download the torrent files to a folder for my torrent client to pick up.
So I wrote torss. It's quite simple, but it does what I need it to do. The user defines some rules, decides which "getter" to use (each RSS feed has its own getter) and runs torss with those settings (likely from cron).
Help:
$ torss -h
Usage: /usr/bin/torss -g getter [OPTIONS]...
torss is parser of RSS feeds which downloads files referenced in the RSS if the
title of the entry matches given rules.
-g, --getter getter script to use
-r, --rules rules file to use
-d, --destination destination path to save torrents to
-i, --history history file to use
-h, --help help
The rules file must contain an array named rules containing at least one entry.
These entries should be regular expressions (for grep -Ei) for torrent titles
to be downloaded. See /etc/torss/rules.sample
The getter script will be looked for in ~/.config/torss/getters/, then
/etc/torss/getters/ and finally as a file referenced from the CWD. This means
you can pass either simply the filename or the absolute/relative path.
The destination path will usually be a folder where your torrent client
automatically picks up torrent files.
The history file is used to ensure the same torrent isn't downloaded multiple
times, as such it should, for normal use, be left as the default value.
Example Use:
~/.config/torss/rules:
rules[0]="foobar S01E[0-9]{2}(.+)?720(.+)?x264"
Those rules match what's in a demo getter script that's included in torss.
$ torss -g demo
Downloading 'Foobar S01E02 720p x264-Pirate' to /home/sid
Downloading 'Foobar S01E01 720p x264-Pirate' to /home/sid
There is also a history file to avoid downloading the same torrents a second time.
I've created the following PKGBUILD, but not yet put it in the AUR as I'd like some feedback first.
PKGBUILD:
# Maintainer: Sid Karunaratne <sakaru at gmail dot com>
pkgname=torss
pkgver=0.2.3
pkgrel=1

backup=('etc/torss/getters/hd-torrents.org' 'etc/torss/getters/thebox.bz' 'etc/torss/getters/thepiratebay.org')
install=install
build() {
# We need to rename githubs folder as its name isn't easy to predict
cd $srcdir
folder=$(tar -tf ${pkgname}-${pkgver}.tar.gz | head -n1)
mv $folder ${pkgname}-${pkgver}
package() {
install -Dm755 ${srcdir}/${pkgname}-${pkgver}/torss $pkgdir/usr/bin/torss
install -Dm644 ${srcdir}/${pkgname}-${pkgver}/rules.sample $pkgdir/etc/torss/rules.sample
install -Dm644 ${srcdir}/${pkgname}-${pkgver}/getters/demo $pkgdir/etc/torss/getters/demo
install -Dm644 ${srcdir}/${pkgname}-${pkgver}/getters/thepiratebay.org $pkgdir/etc/torss/getters/thepiratebay.org
install -Dm644 ${srcdir}/${pkgname}-${pkgver}/getters/hd-torrents.org $pkgdir/etc/torss/getters/hd-torrents.org
install -Dm644 ${srcdir}/${pkgname}-${pkgver}/getters/thebox.bz $pkgdir/etc/torss/getters/thebox.bz
install:
post_install() {
cat <<EOF
==> Various getter scripts have been installed to /etc/torss/getters.
==> If you intend to use the getters for private trackers you will need
==> to edit the appropriate scripts to use your credentials. Copy them to
==> ~/.config/torss/getters if you wish them to be private.
EOF
Since it's on github I know I could use git to clone the repo for the latest code, but I prefer using tags to state releases. This way things like aurcheck/yaourt/packer/etc know there has been an update.
Some private trackers (the ones I made for myself) are already included, though you'll need to edit them, setting the cookiejar values to those of your own cookies.
I would greatly appreciate feedback, this is the first non-trivial bash script I've written.

Yes - and the same here all of a sudden. Very annoying indeed. I really don't want to have to have another app. just to read my RSS feeds but is that going to be the solution? I'm sure this trouble started after I'd inadvertently erased messages instead of marking them all read. And it's only with two VersionTracker feeds too, not the others I get. VT have yet to respond to my request for ideas but if the y do, I'll post here again.

• Remote RSS Feed consumption - no route to host

Hi all, I tried to embed an external RSS feed but always get the error that Service SS_GET_PAGE and Function getRssFeedForUrl cannot be performed due to System Error : No route to host. I guess that the server needs a proxy setting in order to connect to the external proxy. I cannot figure out how to configure the content server to retrieve those external URLs. Is there a specific config file to set the proxy value or do I have to set the proper environment variable on Linux (that was my first guess but I did not succeed). Thanks for any hint.

That could mean one of two things: either the default route is not set on the host giving this error message or IP packets destined to the target host can not be routed due to network misconfiguration.

• Wocka 0.5 - checkinstall for Arch Linux

Last updated: 17th-Feb-2007
With Wocka you can do:
./configure
make
su
wocka
and you'll get the application installed, and a pacman db entry too.
Wocka automatically figures out the package name, version and/or subversion revision, and if it can, other metadata too. It determines the build system (make, unsermake, scons, cmake, etc.). It can also create a basic PKGBUILD, with some of the fields (eg name, version) magically filled in. It can also handle upgrades and check AUR for PKGBUILDs.
Visit the site for a Arch linux package, the source tarball, and detailed usage examples. There's also a feed you can subscribe to at the site if you want to be notified of updates.
http://methylblue.com/wocka/
Comments, contributions, etc. most welcome! Thanks.
===========
I have discovered other programs that do a similar thing for Arch. They may be better and you may want to consider them, or at least demand I implement things they do into Wocka If you do use one of the others, I'd like to hear why, if you have the time, thanks!

Firstly, I'm really sorry I didn't see the above new replies, I subscribed to this thread, but never got the emails... Must have been my spam filter I expect.
Gullible Jones wrote:Wait a minute, why the heck does this thing require QT? It doesn't have a GUI so why would it use the QT library? :?
I used Qt as I have 4 years experience with it and develop fast with it. With Qt4 the library is separated into Core (CLI only) and GUI components, so as soon as Arch ships Qt4 and people have it installed en-mass, I'll switch to the CLI only library. I apologise if you think I'm crazy/stupid, you may be right
You should have talked to Xentac. He already has an app named "Wakka" IIRC.
Hmm sucks, I may have to rename again. I renamed the first time as pacgen is a name already used by two other projects!
sud_crow wrote:wasnt pacman's sound waka waka waka?
heh could be, I'm not a pacman expert. Extralife the webcomic always makes pacman say "Wocka!", but I spose I should have done more research!
phrakture wrote:Send a PKGBUILD to AUR!
Yeah I half did this and then couldn't figure out how to work the AUR or something. I'll try again.
I had 0.3 ready a few weeks ago, then I started using my CRT with my new XBOX 360 and didn't boot to Linux until yesterday Now I have some new TFTs.
The changes since 0.2:
· Automatic upgrade/merge for new installs of subversion managed source installations
· Better versioning detection
· Easy automatic AUR builds via: wocka --aur appname
· Metadata is extracted from LSM files
· --upgrade switch
The upgrade switch basically merges the old package with what's just installed, so you don't lose any information, I figured this was the safest route. Please correct me if you disagree. Thanks

• Planet Arch Linux

Imagine a place where you can read the thoughts of celebrity Archers like Dusty, Cactus, Dibblethewrecker and Xentac, amongst others. Surely too good to be true?! What about if we were also in touch with grand-Archer, Aperio, (Mr Judd Vinet himself). "No, surely not?!", I hear you cry! And for those who are really bored, you can read my thoughts too.
Well, let it be known, such a blessed place does exist. In fact, there's an entire planet reserved for the Archers. Fresh and fragrant meadows of webspace exists for brave pioneers to conquer.
Planet Arch Linux is the place to be. There are over 4000 registered users on these forums, yet only 9 blogs aggregated on Planet AL. It feels rather under-represented. If you have a blog with a decent feed, let Xentac know so that Planet AL can become more representative of the community. Otherwise, do post comments so that the brave bloggers, who wear their souls on their sleves, feel loved.

• I need help getting my RSS feed compaitble with Itunes...Im almost there.

Can someone help me with my code for itunes. Unfortunately I use rapidweaver to podcast and I have read there are a few things Rapidweaver leaves out when publishing the site so itunes does not accept the feed. My RSS feed works and can be subscribed manually though Itunes or with software. Im thinking im using spaces or it looks like I need to number my tracks for my podcast(which sounds odd but, I know itunes is finicky with spaces, symbols etc)
thank you so much for the help...after I get my podcast set in Itunes I will be a happy camper!

It's better to post the URL of the feed (as you have subsequently done) than the contents of the feed .
From the FeedValidator report the feed is basically OK for iTunes. There are several occasions where 'content:encoded' sections (following immediately on 'guid' tags) should be enclosed in

...

tags: however all this will be ignored by iTunes anyway and only applies to other readers. The 'potentially dangerous content' referred to by FeedValidator is within the 'content:encoded' tags and so isn't relevant to iTunes. They are referring to an inline css style, and I don't know whether this might cause a problem elsewhere.
You should really have a language tag, e.g.

(you have a dc:language tag but that's for a different system). This should be placed in the top section, before the first 'item' tag.
It's advisable to have an 'itunes:explicit' tag for each 'item' -
<itunes:explicit>yes IF CONTAINS ADULT MATERIAL, OTHERWISE no</itunes:explicit>
it's not compulsory if you have no adult material, but you must have a 'yes' if you do.
You can check your feed by subscribing in iTunes from the 'Advanced' menu - this has the same result as clicking the 'Subscribe' button on the Store page. If it works OK there you are ready to submit it.

• Dual boot Windows 7 (64) and Arch Linux (64) problems

Hello:
I am new to Arch Linux and just finished installing the 64bit on my laptop. It had a prebuilt Windows 7 (64) installed which I kept but split the hdd from 160Gb to 80Gb and 80Gb. I installed Arch there and set 4 partitions, all of them as Logical - a 64 MB ext2 /boot partition; a 512 MB swap partition; a 15 GB root partition; and the rest as my /home partition. My partitions look like this:
Disk Drive: /dev/sda
Size: 160041885696 bytes, 160.0 GB
Heads: 255 Sectors per Track: 63 Cylinders: 19457
Name Flags Part Type FS Type [Label] Size (MB)
sda1 Primary Unknown (27) 12889.02
sda2 Boot Primary NTFS 106.93
sda3 Primary NTFS [] 73915.11*
sda5 Logical Linux ext2 65.81*
sda6 Logical Linux 509.97*
sda7 Logical Linux ext2 15002.92*
sda8 Logical Linux ext2 57549.55*
The install was succesful(this was running from the core install cd) and I installed GRUB to my /boot but when I restarted it loaded Windows 7. I have used Knoppix USB disc to boot and see my Arch Linux install files and edited the /boot/gur/menu.lst file.
In Windows I installed EasyBCD 1.7.2 and tried to get NeoGrub bootloader working as a dual boot. I tried getting rid of the boot flag for Windows with cfdisk and setting it to my (Logical) sda5. That did not work. So far the only way I have booted into my Arch Linux install has been by going to the Live CD, choosing "Boot from Existing Linux Install" and editing the command files there.
root (hd0,4)
kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda3 ro
initrd /kernel26.img
My goal is to get a dual boot working for Windows 7 and Arch Linux 64 and continue installing the Xorg and KDE to Arch. I just don't know what the problem is here. I don't mind reinstalling Arch if something went wrong, but I would like to keep my Windows running in order and add Arch on.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I ran the LiveCD and chose "Install to MBR hd0". I ended up with this:
setup hd(0,1)
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists.....yes
Checking if "/boot/grub/iso9660_stage1_5" exists.....yes
Running "embed /boot/grub/iso9660_stage1_5 (hd0,1)".....failed(this is not fatal)
Running "embed /boot/grub/iso9660_stage1_5 (hd16)".....failed(this is not fatal)
Running "install /boot/grub/stage1 d (hd0,1) /boot/grub/stage2 p (hd0,1) boot/grub/menu.lst".....failed
Error 31: File is not sector aligned
My entry for Windows into the menu.lst looks like this:
# (0) Arch Linux x64
title Arch Linux x64
root (hd0,4)
kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/3841273c-d91e-41d6-9dbf-716a15d03a01 ro
initrd /kernel26.img
# (1) Arch Linux x64
title Arch Linux x64 Fallback
root (hd0,4)
kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/3841273c-d91e-41d6-9dbf-716a15d03a01 ro
initrd /kernel26-fallback.img
# (2) Windows 7
title Windows 7

• Lenovo System Update and Lenovo Support RSS Feed (X60)

Okay. I got Lenovo System Update (version 5, for Windows 7) and it did not offer me any Critical updates. Only Recommended and Optional ones. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, so I don't want to install Recommended and Optional updates, only the Critical ones if there is any.
On the other hand I also have the Lenovo Support RSS Feed. But they bring me to dead links. For my X60 the two drivers in my RSS Feed are
ThinkVantage Access Connections patch for Access Connections Version 5.95 for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-...
Patch module for Power Manager for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad -
Both are totally dead links.
The tricky part is that there is absolutely no correlation between the two: totally different drivers in the System Update and the RSS Feed.

Hello both,
SU has been discontinued because old SU version wouldn´t work with SP2.
Refer to this thread in at the ThinkVantage board regarding this situation and possible solutions
and ask your questions there, please.

• Why does the Java script work on my RSS feed work for Internet explorer but not for Firefox?

I have finished building the website for my Girlfriend and the only thing left is the RSS feed. It works just fine in IE 8 but in Fire Fox 9 when the widget is clicked a bookmark box pops up and asks if I want to save it as a bookmark. I am not a Java script programer so I am hoping for some help here!! Here is the script:

The sight is http://www.susangabrielle.com

Presumably you fixed it, the RSS seems to work for me
* e.g. http://www.susangabrielle.com/1/post/2012/01/post-title-click-and-type-to-edit.html
although I get a message about missing plugins
