Arch nvidia package; something missing?

I suffered very bad performance using my TI4200 playing UT4200. After a few hours of trying things; I found out the problem was solved by adding a symlink from /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so to /usr/lib/libGL.so This change instantly updated my glxinfo > 'direct rendering' from No to Yes. Might there be some packaging problem; or is this local?

Did you have the mesa package installed? Mesa comes with a libGL.so that can only do software rendering.

  • NVIDIA package confusion

I'm trying to understand the Arch Nvidia packages but the wiki isn't overly clear.
Currently, I use the nvidia-173xx package with a Geforce 7800 GTX card, since, at installation, I believed that the older cards weren't supported by the Nvidia package in Extra.
However, I recently discovered that version 285.05.09 supports my card, according to the supported products tab on:
    http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/linux-di … er-uk.html
So, firstly, should I ditch nvidia-173xx and revert to the main Nvidia package?
And secondly, since nvidia-173xx requires linux<3.1 due to incompatibility with xorg 1.11, presumably linux should be added to the IgnorePkg list in pacman.conf, along with the currently ignored packages below?:
    xf86-input-evdev
    xf86-input-keyboard
    xf86-input-mouse
    xf86-video-nv
    xf86-video-vesa
    xorg-server
    xorg-server-common
Once Nvidia produce a driver suitable for xorg 1.11, I'll be able to un-ignore these, and install Nvidia instead of 173xx (or even 173xx-all).  Correct?

Cotton wrote:What is nvidia-173xx for then?
For older cards, like my fx 5500.

  • Slackware TGZ to Arch Linux Package Converter

I have two programs that interest me (LilyPond and Battle for Wesnoth) that don't have Arch Linux packages and compiling them would involve hunting everywhere for obscure dependencies (LilyPond in particular) so I just downloaded the Slackware packages, inspected them and found that by unzipping them onto the root folder (as superuser) and running the install script (if there is one) I can get them to run with minimal fuss.
Has the idea of making a Slackware to Arch package converter been brought up before? Is there any problems with this? (Slackware is i386-optimised if I remember correctly, but I think it's still worth it since there is more Slackware packages than Arch Linux ones out there.)

i3839 wrote:Flames?? Where? You sure you didn't misread something?
    Probably.
Here's what I read, admitting that it doesn't seem quite as bad the second time around...:
Oh? All I was hearing is that Arch already has enough packages, and that the devs are overloaded and almost down.
"you don't know which way is up, you contradict yourself while continuing to ignore the problems and aren't fixing anything".
Also getting custom packages into Arch's official repository seems a bit hard currently, not to mention that it's totally unclear how to do that (drop it in incomming and wait a year? Lotto?).
"The system isn't working and you haven't done anything to try to fix it. I haven't read or noticed any of the threads illustrating that this topic has been argued to death and isn't going unnoticed"
Maintaining packages is the most work, and every distro maintains the same packages over and over again. Tell me why to not use good, working packages from another sane distro?
    "The other distros are better."
(Personally, I don't care if anybody likes another distro better, but if so, use it instead, don't talk about it)
Changing GCC often gives the same problem as updating to new major libraries. Simply leave the old GCC libs or make a seperate package for them. Currently it's rather impossible in Arch to install new packages with an outdated system, if that's solved then it's also easy to use Slackware packages.
"The Arch philosophy of keeping packages stable but up to date is just plain wrong.  I don't bother to pacman -Syu before I mention problems."
Of course if would be best if there was a nice, good binary package standard that works on all distros, so that the application makers can make and maintain the packages themselves, but that's utopia (paths are too often hardcoded for instance).
"hey, I do have some good ideas".
It isn't a matter of being able to do something or not, it's a matter of convenience. All programs should be relative easy to compile from source, but that doesn't mean that everyone should compile all programs themselves.
"There aren't enough Arch binaries to go around"
    OR:
    "ABS sucks"
    OR:
"Hold my hand, I can't compile."
    OR:
    "I use Arch cause I don't like Gentoo". :-D
Yeah, some of that is a little (or quite, or even very) harsh, you can blame it on me rather than taking it to heart.
As for the slackware packages issue, I'm personally not writing a script to convert them; I've never used slackware in my life. The idea has merit, but I get tired of people discussing pros and cons and not doing anything. I think that's because I'm about as bad as anyone on that front, possibly worse.

  • How to make a custom Nvidia package for my custom kernel?

I needed to create a custom kernel for my motherboard in order to have support for my integrated LAN and AGP bus...  My chipset is ULi's M1689.  Apparently, it will be native to maybe the 2.6.11 kernel, but definitely to the 2.6.12 kernel.
In the meantime, I created a custom 2.6.10 kernel with the required patches as described in the wiki.  It works! Thanks!
Now, I want to also create a custom Nvidia package that compiled for this kernel, so if I every re-install etc.  I just need to have these 2 packages handy to be up and running quickly.
Has this been done?  Is there a how-to?
    Thanks!
    KF

Doesn't the genuine arch package work? Just run pacman -S nvidia in runlevel 3 and it should work. You just have to have sources of your kernel. Well, at least this works with my non-stock nitro kernel. Here's some more reference. I guess it gets a bit more tricky with multiple kernels, but it's not your case, is it [didn't get it clearly enough]?
    Cheers,
    lucke

  • Debtap - A script to convert .deb packages to Arch Linux packages

I wrote this script in my free time to help people who, for any reason, want to convert a .deb to an Arch Linux package. It works in a similar way with alien (which converts .deb packages to .rpm packages and vice versa), but, unlike alien, it is focused on accuracy of conversion, trying to translate Debian/Ubuntu packages names to the correct Arch Linux packages names and store them in the dependencies fields of the .PKGINFO metadata in the final package. In other words, it won't only create an Arch package with the data of the original .deb package, but also it will try to create a valid and as accurate as possible .PKGINFO metadata file in the converted package. It uses pkgfile and pacman utilities to achieve this accuracy. The final package can be installed like any local Arch Linux package. Debtap is now available on AUR!
    FAQ
    Q: What "debtap" stands for?
A: DEB To Arch (Linux) Package
Q: Isn't better to download an official package or write a PKGBUILD in case I need to compile a package or convert a .deb package to an Arch Linux package?
A: Sure it is, and I truely encourage you to do so. Debtap was written to create packages that either cannot be compiled (closed source packages) or cannot be built from AUR for various reasons (error during compiling or unavailable files), as a quick 'n' dirty solution and an extra option for creating Arch Linux packages for Arch Linux users.
Q: So debtap will help me only in case I need to convert specific .deb packages to Arch Linux packages?
A: No. In case you need to write a new PKGBUILD for a package that already exists in the Debian/Ubuntu distributions, by converting its .deb package to Arch package with debtap, thanks to the packages names translator function inside the script, it can help you determine which dependencies are needed for the package you write the PKGBUILD for and complete the necessary fields.
Q: What are the minimum requirements to run this script?
A: You need to have installed these dependencies: bash, binutils (provides ar utility for extracting .deb package), pkgfile, and fakeroot. You must run at least once (preferably recently) "debtap -u" to create/update pkgfile and debtap database (you do this with root privileges).
Q: Debtap needs a lot of time to convert a package. So, why this is happening?
A: Like I said, debtap is focused on accuracy. It won't just unpack a .deb package and then repackage its data to an Arch Linux package, ignoring metadata. Depending on the speed of your processor and the package itself, conversion can take from a few seconds to several minutes.
Q: During conversion I get several warning messages, why?
A: Debtap cannot be 100% accurate for several reasons,  the main reason for this is the complexity of packages names. If you want to check the freshly generated .PKGINFO and .INSTALL (this is optional file) metadata files or even fix the untranslated packages names inside .PKGINFO, debtap offers you the option to edit these files before compressing the final package.
Q: How do I use debtap?
A: The syntax is quite simple actually: debtap [option] package_filename
    For example: debtap world-of-goo-demo_1.0_i386.deb
Any recommendations or questions for debtap are welcomed!

  • Package names missing when specifying classes

    Hi!
I need to generate Javadoc for some (not all) of the classes in one of the packages. So I specified the class names in the batch file (thanks again, Doug!) instead of specifying the package name. Any ideas?

  • Core package driver missing

I'm running Windows 7 professional and can't install my envy 5530 printer due to the above error message - have tried downloading various fixes but all require me to pay money to some comp-any that I have never heard of.  Is there a simple solution to this - I have followed the suggested fixes proposed by the hp device doctor and wizard but no success.  What is the windows 7 core package driver?

    Hello pmak,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
Regarding the install issues with the ENVY 5530 on Windows 7, would it be possible to provide a screen shot of the "core package driver missing" error, this way I will be able to see if there is an error number that goes along side it?
Also, what had been the results / steps the Print and Scan Dr and the Printer Install Wizard?
additionally, what is the brand and model number of the computer?
Is this the software you are trying to install: HP ENVY 5530 e-All-in-One Printer series Full Feature Software and Drivers, or is it this: HP ENVY 5530 e-All-in-One Printer series Basic Driver?
    Hope to hear back.

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Exp/imp, but packages are missing

    Hi there,
exported everything from a schema in a O8 database into a dump file using the exp command. Afterwards I tried to import the schema into my local O10 XE database. Tables, Triggers and so on were imported fine, but the packages are missing (and since Triggers call functions in these packages, compiling them fails). Is this behaviour normal?? I'm pretty sure, that the packages were exported into the dump-file, but I can't figure out a way importing them explicitly.
So if anyone has an idea, I would be glad to know...
    Regards,
    Daniel

Is this behaviour normal??I don't think so. Apart from checking Metalink Note:132904.1 - Compatibility Matrix for Export & Import Between Different Oracle Versions, you could try to repeat the import operation using ROWS=N and IGNORE=Y options.

If you're using XP, go into your Add or Remove programs control panel. Can you see Apple Software Update in the list of programs? if so, select Apple Software Update, click "Change" and then click "Repair".
If you're using Vista or Windows 7, go into your Uninstall a program control panel. Can you see Apple Software Update in the list of programs? If so, select Apple Software Update and click "repair".
If you were able to repair, and ASU now appears under "All Programs" in the Start Menu, try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

that same search on the D: turns up winload.exe all over
When I look at I my BCD 'device partation=C:'
    shouldnt this be D:?
If so is this just a simple bcdedit, reboot into the bios, change my bios from IDE mode to RAID mode, save to cmos then, theoretically boot into windows with my raid correct (showing as a singe drive C: )

  • NVidia packages - let's not use nvidia-installer [RFC]

Hi. After messing around with Xgl I (for some reason) decided that I hated the way the nvidia driver package doesn't account for all the files the nvidia-installer spits out/modifies. I wanted all the files involved to be properly managed by pacman. So I made some PKGBUILDs, looking at Fedora and Gentoo stuff for inspiration, and getting annoyed trying to work out what needs to be where based on NV's unmaintained install makefile..
The PKGBUILDs that follow separate the kernel module from the rest of the nvidia package, but this is by no means necessary - I just wanted to be able to reinstall one without the other (to do with installing gl parts without restarting X - see below for more).
(If there is to be a separation, it may be more logical to put the x.org driver module with the kernel module, with just the GL parts separate.)
    pkgname=nvidia-kernel
    pkgver=1.0.8178

Note: OpenGL headers have been replaced (if applicable) by symlinks to the NVidia headers.
To switch to the mesa headers, reinstall mesa.
(You may want to do this if compiling a GL app for another system.)

..As you can see, the nvidia-glx .install instates the NVidia gl headers to aid compiling against them. If mesa is installed it's versions of these files will be overwritten. Making sure to install the package for the desired headers last seemed like the simplest way to select them. Gentoo has some script to select the gl libs.
PS: This is designed alongside the current mesa-6.4.2-1 package in testing.
So. Any comments? Any good? Or shall I just keep them to myself?

tpowa wrote:well, problem is not that it's not possible, problem is if it is allowed.
i'm not a license expert but as far as i can remember no big distro provides the packages other then nvidia-installer.
    gentoo is a special case.
Yeah, I thought that might be a problem. The LICENSE seems to have a clause to do with splitting up the package...
No Separation of Components.  The SOFTWARE is licensed as a
single product.  Its component parts may not be separated for use
on more than one computer, nor otherwise used separately from the
    other parts.
But this refers to *use* of the seperate parts, which I suppose is a bit vague. Anyhoo, as I say, this modified install method can still work with a combined package. It could even not bother with the kernel module compile if it's already present.
The only other part that seems relevant is...
2.1.2  Linux/FreeBSD Exception.  Notwithstanding the foregoing terms
of Section 2.1.1, SOFTWARE designed exclusively for use on the Linux or
FreeBSD operating systems, or other operating systems derived from the
source code to these operating systems, may be copied and redistributed,
provided that the binary files thereof are not modified in any way
(except for unzipping of compressed files).
But since no binary files are modified this doesn't seem to apply. Of course, IANAL..
