Arch on Pentium 200MHz and 64Mb RAM

I have an old computer with a Intel Pentium 200MHz CPU and 64Mb RAM.
Is that machine suitable to run archlinux?
I'm also open to suggestions for other linux distributions better suited for
such an old computer. I think i have no need for arch's bleeding edge approach on that machine.
I have experience with debian stable as well and like it for not having to maintain it that much.
But i'm not sure, if it's still suited for such an old computer. Maybe, there are better alternatives.
Any ideas?

Thanks a lot for all the suggestions.
@Moonswan: That link is great. (Direct link to the most interesting article: http://kmandla.wordpress.com/2010/12/13 … e-litter/)
I had a look at all the recommendations, but the choice hasn't become easier
Maybe i should decribe what i want to do with it:
I want to use it as my kitchen computer, to listen to music and browse the internet.
I want to install an PCI-USB card and connect a bluetooth adapter;
a network card and a soundcard (i have a Creative Soundblaster 16 with ISA bus and
a Creative Soundblaster Live! with PCI bus. I'm not sure, which one would be better for
my needs. Any ideas?)
Also, i want to just use the system, not tinker too much with it.
To me it looks like, Debian stable would give me all that. But it is certainly not the most
lightweight solution. Generally, i like the computer to work more, if that means i have to
work less. So, my favorite is still Debian, but i think, maybe i should give one of the more
lightweight distributions a chance. But which one?

  • Arch on old vaio laptop (64mb ram, amd K6 550Mhz)

Can I run Archlinux + awesomewm on this old laptop? or that's no realistic?

The minimum system requirements say i686 architecture and minimum 64MB RAM.  You have the 64MB RAM and Here it states that a AMD K6 is i686 architecture.  So, it should, but it won't be stellar.
Edit:  Although it might work out of the box I'd also look at compiling your own kernel from scratch with only what you need to reduce that memory footprint.  Compiling a kernel is a pain but if it's pared down quite a bit would only take a bit of time.

  • Installing arch with less than 64mb RAM...

    Hi!
Maybe I will need to install linux to old machines, pentium 2, with 64mb ram maximum...
I love archlinux... but, there is any way to install it with that ram amount?
(as I read that the new livecd install needs at least 192mb ram?)

Sorry, I didn't read your post correctly
This way, I guess you'll find this thread disappointing

  • Minimum HW Req'ts: Arch on Pentium Pro 200?

I have just built a vintage Pentium Pro 200 PC from a lot of parts I had lying around. It is quite the machine for its time - dual Pentium Pro 200 CPUs, 128 MB of RAM, a big hard drive (I had a 120 GB drive so I used it!), SCSI Zip and Jaz drives, etc.
I have loaded Windows NT 4.0 on it - Win NT 4.0 and the Pentium Pro 200 were natural running mates at the time each was current - but I am wondering if I could load Arch Linux on it instead. Arch is 686 optimized, and the Pentium Pro is the original 686!
What are the minimum hardware requirements to run Arch? I have searched both these forums and the Wiki with no luck. Will it run on a 200 MHz processor with 128 MB of RAM?
If it could, I would use the lightest of lightweight software I could find - IceWM, Sylpheed, XMMS, etc. hoping to build a usable system.
What do you think? Can this work on this hardware base?

Hi all, just reporting back to let you know that I have Arch 2007-05 (Duke) up and running nicely on a two CPU Pentium Pro 200 box, in only 128 MB of RAM. It seems to run pretty well, although it *is* slow to launch big heavyweights like Firefox and Thunderbird. I have hunted down an older, lighter web browser (Opera 6.11) and moved to Sylpheed for email. All in all, an excellent result. This post is being made on this new Arch install, through Opera 6.11.
I have set Arch up two different window managers, XFCE4 and IceWM. On a 200 MHz box, XFCE4 is the "big heavy but full featured" window manager and IceWM is the small fast one. In both cases, I am using Rox as the desktop (created my own ~/.config/XFCE4/xinitrc to configure Rox instead of XFCE4 desktop). Rox makes an excellent lightweight, fast desktop manager. I actually like it better than XFCE4 desktop, and the inherent Rox file manager is way, way faster than Thunar (and nicer looking too, once you pick up a nice theme like Noia or even just the supplied Gnome theme - Rox's default is just plain ugly!).
The only real issue I have left is that it continually complains that my locale is not correct. I have just done the stock install and haven't changed anything in this regard. Where/how do I set the locale? I would like to make these messages go away!

my macbook pro running lion will not boot . it stays on the grey page with the cog spinning. I have tried all methods of booting to no avail. I have removed the bottom and taken out the battery and the ram . will this affect my applecare warranty. I had to try myself as I'm overseas for two months and nowhere near any sort of help .

there was a recent software update that seemed to screw HDV up.  Do some searching here over the last month or 2 and you'll find a bunch of posts and some possible solutions.
Worst case scenario, do as Shane suggests.  But might I suggest you take a look at the user tips section of the forum.  there are some great tips on how to prevent these sorts of problems by cloning your startup drive, etc.

When trying to download Mavericks it says it cannot be loaded onto this machine? Strange as I have just downloaded Pages, Numbers and Keynote...free? Thanks and Regards

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You already have got OS X Mavericks installed (the Keynote, Pages and Numbers versions available in the Mac App Store are only compatible with OS X Mavericks).
You have got a Late 2013 MacBook Pro, which uses a special OS X Mavericks version that is not available in the Mac App Store. This is the reason why the Mac App Store is not compatible with OS X Mavericks even if you are using it. This will be fixed in OS X 10.9.1, when your Mac uses the same Mavericks version as all other Macs.
Until then, you can reinstall OS X through OS X Recovery > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718

  • Microsoft Office 2004 -- extremely high cpu usage and virtual ram

    hi,
when i use office it causes a very high cpu usage even when its in idle mode.
i am unable to work with it, because its extremely slow.
    does anyone have same experiences?
    thanks for your help!
    mbp 2.0 1,5gb ram 80gb hdd   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I am able to work OK with office, I'm using the 'old version' Microsoft Office v.X, not much details in the About Box, just listed as MSoft Word/Excel/etc for Mac service release 1.
I get the occasional crash, and I have seen Word in particular use 90% of a single core and amazingly large virtual memory usage, gigabytes sometimes, but eventually the document gets printed.
It shows how useful the dual core (or quad) cpu approach is!
One cpu for Word to print, and one cpu to run the rest of my applications/life!
I still use this old office rather than re-booting into Window§ for whatever is the latest version of office.
Doing some playing with a similar one page document in Office v.X and Pages 2.01, I get Word using about 25% of a core , Pages using 5%, - whilst editing; Intel native Pages has 20% of a core and 80MB ram 480 virtual whilst printing, Word has about 100% of a core and 65MB ram 650 virtual whilst printing, but it is a powerPC code so Rosetta is in there somewhere.
check Activity Monitor or other apps/widgets for some parasitic processes? have fun!

Your iMac should be almost silent.

  • Xcode With MacBook Air 11 and 4 ram will work well ?

    Hello Guys ,
I thought to buy MacBook Air 11 and 4gb ram , So i just wanted to ask , he will work good for Development ? Without problems ?

That statement means nothing without some argumentation. How much does Xcode need RAM? How big codebase works well with 4GB? Have you actually EVER ran out of memory with 4GB usign Xcode?
8GB is better, of course. But if everything can be done with 4GB then it is better to save the money.
I have used MBA 2011/2GB and it worked flawlessly in normal desktop usage (Safari, Terminal, Email etc...). Didn't try with Xcode, though.
