Arch PPC, a G4 and a Saturday

I had some spare time Saturday. Well, actually, I had plenty of stuff
to do, I just did not want to. I was sitting at my desk thinking of
anything that I could be doing besides what I should be doing
A shiny box in the corner of my office caught me eye!
I have two Apple G4 machines, both are 450MHz (Don't be a hater!)
My oldest son has one that he plays around with. It has OSX on it.
The other one was sitting in the corner of my office here at home.
It had OSX on it also. But it was not being used at all.
Trying Arch PPC on the G4 had been a plan for a while. The time to try
it had come. It was placed on "the rack". The shiny G4 was going to be
a file server!
The install went very well, and quick. There were only two hangups.
If I had taken the time to read before installing, the first problem would not
have been a problem at all. It was the issue with OpenSSH requiring heimdal.
And heimdal being in extra and not in core.
The second problem was after the install. The G4 was rebooted and I
was greeted with a screen full of scrolling text.
DEFAULT CATCH, code=300 at %SRR0:...
There was more on the line that I do not remember. That line looped
forever. My official opinion was "that ain't right". A Google search told
me that it might be trying the wrong partition and I needed to boot into
OpenFirmware (OF) and make it manually boot the correct partition.
Getting in OF was a challenge. Googling for ways to get into it gave
plenty of hits. After many failed attempts, I finally got in and told it
what to boot (boot hd:3,yaboot) and Arch PPC was running!
I had read that running "ybin" would fix the booting error. When the
system was fully up, ybin was ran. Then the system was rebooted and it came up
the way it should!
Then OpenSSH, Samba, ProFTP, and lighttpd was installed.
The total time it took, from start to finish, was under 45 mins.
Remember the stuff that I was trying to avoid doing? There was still
time left to do those things. Not good   I needed to kill more time.
Why not add X and e17? Although neither of those would be
used much, if ever, on a file server. So what! I want to see how it
does with X running.
I installed X, firefox, thunar, terminal, x11vnc and e17.
I added 3 more HDs. Now there is a little over 1TB in the G4.
When everything was installed, startx.
The screenshot shows the CPU at 7%. That is not accurate. On average,
with X and e17 running, the CPU stays near 50%. X wont be used anyway.
The box will run headless. Without X running, the CPU stays at about 1%.
The G4 was placed in the location it will remain. Booted up (no X.)
Everything was tested, everything works.
All that added about 40 mins onto the time (e17 had to be compiled.)
And I still had plenty of time to mow the lawn

I'd buy that shirt!
Also: nicely done! I thought about installing Arch PPC on my iBook but then again, I'd miss Textmate. Maybe on a second partition ... later.

  • [SOLVED]Unable to boot eMac with Arch PPC

    Hi everyone,
I just got into Arch and I realized there was a PPC port, so I decided to see if I could replace Ubuntu on my eMac (USB 2.0) with it.  Unfortunately, I am unable to boot, getting stuck with the loading of the second-stage bootstrap.  What should I be looking for in order to diagnose and conceivably remedy this issue?
I get the flashing folder with an alternating Mac face and question mark.
EDIT: Please see the link to the archlinuxppc-user mailing list for the resolution to my issue.    I hope it helps someone else.

    Hi DaNiMoTh,
Thanks for the reply.  Well, I have just made a post at the mailing list page, so hopefully it will be approved by the moderators soon.  The situation has somewhat changed as I have attempted to reinstall Arch PPC on the eMac since then.  Now I am immediately taken to the second-stage yaboot screen at boot and I have no access to OpenFirmware.  When I use the Live CD to mount the / and /home partitions of /dev/hda, all I see in / is /home and /lost+found, while in /home all I see is /lost+found.  It appears that Arch PPC never actually installed, and I have no idea why.  I guess the files in /mnt were never copied to /.  I'm so confused by all this, but I really desire to understand what is happening and how I can get this computer up and running.  If you have any thoughts at all, please don't hesitate to share.  I'm completely willing to do some reading, but I have not seen reports of a similar situation yet.
By the way, my eMac is 32-bit.
    Thanks,
    bkadoctaj
EDIT: I'm not sure how I can get a log for any of this, especially since it appears the install never completed, even though nothing during the install process suggested that was the case.
EDIT 2: Forget this thread...  The discussion has been continued over at http://groups.google.com/group/archlinu … f4b89ad2ad
    Thank you for the assistance.

  • Arch PPC - Display not outputting anything

I've been working with an Apple G4, 1.4(?)Ghz PPC with one of the Apple Display Port monitors, and I've been trying to get arch on it using the install image from the Arch PPC site. So I finally got it to boot correctly, dear god that was more work than it should have been, and it loads the kernel, starts the daemons, but then, when the screen refreshes at the end, nothing. The display appears active, but there is no visible output. No login no nothing. I used the install disk to chroot into the root partition and installed some more packages including: dbus, hal, fam, abs, and openssh. So I added a user configured sshd and rebooted and I can shell into the machine fine. Everything appears to be there, I have no idea why it is doing this. I really have not had the time to do an extensive search in the system for possible errors, but does anyone have any ideas on what it could be and how to fix it?
    Thanks

There is a mailing list for ppc problems on http://groups.google.it/group/archlinuxppc-user. The archppc devs follow it.

  • Arch PPC OpenOffice: Cannot find libicuuc.so.40

With a fresh installation of OpenOffice.org (package openoffice-base) on Arch PPC (using an aluminum PowerBook G4), I can't run OpenOffice.  When I run "soffice" in a terminal, it throws the following error message:
/usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice.bin: error while loading shared libraries: libicuuc.so.40: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
What does libicuuc.so.40 do, why isn't it there, and what can I do to fix it?

    libicuuc.so.40 => libicu.
    http://www.archlinuxppc.org/packages/4756/
Is it installed ? It has to be installed, because openoffice-base depends on it.

  • Arch PPC failure on yaboot

Today i installed arch-ppc on an iBook G4 (ppc).
It seems that the installation was fine until the yaboot process, i got some problems related to of paths, after 'googling' about yaboot i installed it manually. My problem now is that when i boot the laptop i got the yaboot menu selection ('l', 'x' or 'c'), but choosing 'i' or 'x' gives me a blank white screen and the systems seems to be hung.
Now to boot macosx i need to press 'alt' key when booting and choose the macosx folder, or to move directly the MacosX partition before the Bootstrap one (where yaboot was installed).
I can´t try my arch system becouse i can´t boot into it.
These are my yaboot.conf and my partition scheme:

Does anyone have any clue about what is happening and how could i solve this?
    Thanks in advance.

I tried messing around inside of OpenFirmware but was unsuccessful. I also tried uploading a patched copy of ofboot to my machine as a replacement for the faulty one. I replaced /disk@0: in my yaboot.conf file with hd: (for both the device and ofboot lines). Neither of these strategies worked out for me.
Would you mind giving the commands you used to solve the problem?
Edit: Nevermind, apparently my kernel did not install properly, and that's why Yaboot didn't see it.

  • Install Arch Linux with UEFI and GPT

Hi, I purchased a new laptop and I created a partition with Windows 8 (default OS on laptop) and another partition where I want to install Arch Linux.
When I tried to install Arch Linux not boot from CD. After searching in Google I downloaded the latest Arch Linux ISO (2012-12-01) and tried again.
This time CD started without problems but when I used cfdisk showed an error with GPT partition. I went back to search in Google and I read about gdisk and gfdisk and I try it but when I partitioning to install Arch Linux partition show that may cause damage. I searched and searched without success and I wonder if there is a Arch Linux GPT install guide or if someone knows how to install Arch Linux with GPT and a Windows 8 partition in UEFI.
    Thanks and regards.

Hi again, finally I got "install" Arch Linux but when I reboot the follow message appears:
"No Booteable Device, Hit any key."
I don't know if I broke Windows Boot Manager, UEFI or both...
I tried to reinstall GRUB but was unsuccessful.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks and regards.

  • Arch/PPC - how can we test...?

    Hi all,
These last few months, I've been juggling with quite a few linux distro (Arch->Debian unstable->Fedora dev.->Ubuntu dev.->Arch and now I'm back on Arch linux and plan to stick with it!
However, I have an iBook and would like to test the PPC version of Arch that I heard was under development (ref. LinuxTag).
So, what is the best way to help testing on PPC...?
    Thanks a lot!

i'm currently in a phase where i am not on the wired very often. we just recently moved to a new appartment so we dun have a connection at home yet.
this will end on the 10th of august - hopefully.
anyway, if i can be of hellp ask me when i'm around or bother cnuke on #archlinux-ppc
everything you prolly need is hosted on a server that i'd rather not make too public for misc. reasons. but if you ask me nicely i'll provide you with an iso you can boot from at least or a few lines on howto use other distro's bootcds to install arch. simply drop me a line at alexander -dot- baldeck (at) icomedias.com for now.
    sorry for the trouble.

  • Trying to Install Arch PPC

    Hi
I am trying to install Arch Linux PPC from the ISO on their site. I have run into a problem. When it comes to installing the packages I get and error about "key could not be looked up remotely" with different keys mentioned. I have tried changing the SigLevel  to Never in /etc/pacman.conf but this seems to get over written when I start the package install form the installer (/arch/setup). How can I get round this?
    Thanks
    Robert

    Hi
Thank you for the reply and information. I have gotten further. I am now stuck at installing the boot loader. I get an error that says:
Unable to find OpenFirmware path for boot=/dev/sda2
Please add ofboot=<path> where <path> is the OpenFirmware path to /dev/sda2 to /etc/yaboot.conf
So I have Googled and that ofpath should give me this information. But I then get this error when I run ofpath /dev/sdb2:
    Unable to determind controller path!
Am I doing the right thing to find out the OpenFirmware path? Is there anything else I can try?
    Thanks
    Robert

Basicaly what i want to achieve is to have a dual boot system on my laptop where i can access the files in some sort of shared storage or just to be able to access my windows files when im booted up in arch is there a way to achieve this?

Yes you can, you could have a partition for each OS, and then you could have a third partition for your shared files (I think it would have to be ntfs for the shared partition)
Or you could just mount the windows partition from arch.

You need to specify dns servers (which will resolve the name www.google.ca into an ip address).

  • I started installing Arch around 8pm tonight and it's freaken 7am!

I started installing Arch around 8pm last night and it's almost 7am now and I still don't have a working system.  My xorg.conf file is screwed up, my screen resolution is in the freaken 500x300's, no sound, my wifi don't work.  Nothing works.  I've read through every wiki out there and they're no help to me.  Can someone please help me get this solved?  I'm thinking I should just give up and leave it alone as I'm at my witends with this.

I can not post my xorg file here as I'm on another computer because I can't get it working right.  I don't even have a clue what I did to even get to where I am.  I really need someone in my area to meet up and help me, I SUCK at online wikis and stuff.
I'm going to go to sleep and start completely over tomorrow.  I know I can get through the partitioning and all, but after that I'm f***ing lost.

  • Two problems with setting up arch. Keyboard layout and wifi card.

    Hi guys.
I have installed arch on my old laptop (LG le express) and I have two problems.
    1. I wasn't able to create a Hebrew keyboard layout.
    2. I don't know how to install my wifi card. (Ralink 2500).
as for one, I changed my xorg.conf to this:
    section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Keyboard0"
    Driver "kbd"
    Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
    Option "Xkbmodel" "pc105"
    Option "XkbLayout" "us,il"
    Option "KkbOption" "grep:switch,grp:alt_shift_toggel,grp_led:caps"
    EndSection
    but it didn't work.
As for 2, I have found this:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Us … eta_driver
But I can't find how to install rt2x00
    Thanks

If you edit the first post you can change the title, prepend it with [solved] (once all issues are actually solved). Also if you can post your working solution then it will be useful for others having similar difficulties. Please read the following links.
    Mark threads as [solved]
    Forum etiquette
As for your wireless issue, which tool are you using? A quick google around seems to suggest that netcfg in combination with wpa supplicant can connect to LEAP encrypted networks, eg this thread. Are you also aware that there are graphical tools to do this for you that you may find easier, such as wicd?

  • Arch PPC issue with creating bootstrap partition

On second thought, I'm doing good.

On second thought, I'm doing good.
EDIT: Didn't want to be a help vampire. Something I recently learned about, and felt bad to identify as.
So, in case anyone is trying to install Arch on a PowerMac G4, and messed up around the mac-fdisk step, I stumbled upon a thing that you shouldn't do.
After you hit i to initialize the partition map
DON'T hit p too early to print the table. You're supposed to enter the full block size. Doing this causes fdisk to believe you are setting up a 4 block partition. The bootstrap partition has to be 64 blocks, so that will just be completely non-working.
A very simple foolhardy mistake. Forgive me forum, I did not see. That little letter p in the wrong line... nightmarish, now that I look back on it.
The Wiki will lead you well until you get to the kernel.
    # type name length base
    ( size ) system
    /dev/hda1 Apple_partition_map Apple 63 @ 1
    ( 31.5k) Partition map
    /dev/hda2 Apple_Bootstrap bootstrap 1600 @ 64
    (800.0k) NewWorld bootblock

For the kernel the wiki is giving you something outdated. When you're installing the base, do this:
    pacman -r /mnt -S base --ignore linux-pmac64 --ignore linux-pmac
And installing the kernel is like this:
    pacman -r /mnt -S linux-pmac
    pacman -r /mnt -S linux-pmac64
