Arch PPC failure on yaboot

Today i installed arch-ppc on an iBook G4 (ppc).
It seems that the installation was fine until the yaboot process, i got some problems related to of paths, after 'googling' about yaboot i installed it manually. My problem now is that when i boot the laptop i got the yaboot menu selection ('l', 'x' or 'c'), but choosing 'i' or 'x' gives me a blank white screen and the systems seems to be hung.
Now to boot macosx i need to press 'alt' key when booting and choose the macosx folder, or to move directly the MacosX partition before the Bootstrap one (where yaboot was installed).
I can´t try my arch system becouse i can´t boot into it.
These are my yaboot.conf and my partition scheme:
yaboot.conf:
boot=/dev/sda2
device=/disk@0:
partition=6
delay=10
timeout=40
install=/usr/lib/yaboot/yaboot
magicboot=/usr/lib/yaboot/ofboot
macosx=/dev/sda4
enablecdboot
image=/boot/vmlinux26
        label=Linux
        root=/dev/sda6
        initrd=/boot/kernel26.img
        read-only
        partition=6
Partition scheme:
/dev/sda1    Apple_partition_map   Apple                    Partition map
/dev/sda2    Apple_Bootstrap          bootstrap              NewWorld bootblock
/dev/sda3    Apple_Boot                  eXternal booter    Unknow
/dev/sda4    Apple_HFS                  Apple_HFS_1      HFS  <--- partition with main volume for macosx
/dev/sda5    Apple_HFS                  Apple_HFS_2      HFS
/dev/sda6    Apple_UFS                  Apple_HFS_3      Unknow   <--- partition with linux
/dev/sda7    Apple_Free
/dev/sda8    Apple_Free
/dev/sda9    Apple_Free
Does anyone have any clue about what is happening and how could i solve this?
Thanks in advance.

I tried messing around inside of OpenFirmware but was unsuccessful. I also tried uploading a patched copy of ofboot to my machine as a replacement for the faulty one. I replaced /disk@0: in my yaboot.conf file with hd: (for both the device and ofboot lines). Neither of these strategies worked out for me.
Would you mind giving the commands you used to solve the problem?
Edit: Nevermind, apparently my kernel did not install properly, and that's why Yaboot didn't see it.

  • Arch PPC, a G4 and a Saturday

    I had some spare time Saturday. Well, actually, I had plenty of stuff
    to do, I just did not want to. I was sitting at my desk thinking of
    anything that I could be doing besides what I should be doing
    A shiny box in the corner of my office caught me eye!
    I have two Apple G4 machines, both are 450MHz (Don't be a hater!)
    My oldest son has one that he plays around with. It has OSX on it.
    The other one was sitting in the corner of my office here at home.
    It had OSX on it also. But it was not being used at all.
    Trying Arch PPC on the G4 had been a plan for a while. The time to try
    it had come. It was placed on "the rack". The shiny G4 was going to be
    a file server!
    The install went very well, and quick. There were only two hangups.
    If I had taken the time to read before installing, the first problem would not
    have been a problem at all. It was the issue with OpenSSH requiring heimdal.
    And heimdal being in extra and not in core.
    The second problem was after the install. The G4 was rebooted and I
    was greeted with a screen full of scrolling text.
    DEFAULT CATCH, code=300 at %SRR0:...
    There was more on the line that I do not remember. That line looped
    forever. My official opinion was "that ain't right". A Google search told
    me that it might be trying the wrong partition and I needed to boot into
    OpenFirmware (OF) and make it manually boot the correct partition.
    Getting in OF was a challenge. Googling for ways to get into it gave
    plenty of hits. After many failed attempts, I finally got in and told it
    what to boot (boot hd:3,yaboot) and Arch PPC was running!
    I had read that running "ybin" would fix the booting error. When the
    system was fully up, ybin was ran. Then the system was rebooted and it came up
    the way it should!
    Then OpenSSH, Samba, ProFTP, and lighttpd was installed.
    The total time it took, from start to finish, was under 45 mins.
    Remember the stuff that I was trying to avoid doing? There was still
    time left to do those things. Not good   I needed to kill more time.
    Why not add X and e17? Although neither of those would be
    used much, if ever, on a file server. So what! I want to see how it
    does with X running.
    I installed X, firefox, thunar, terminal, x11vnc and e17.
    I added 3 more HDs. Now there is a little over 1TB in the G4.
    When everything was installed, startx.
    The screenshot shows the CPU at 7%. That is not accurate. On average,
    with X and e17 running, the CPU stays near 50%. X wont be used anyway.
    The box will run headless. Without X running, the CPU stays at about 1%.
    The G4 was placed in the location it will remain. Booted up (no X.)
    Everything was tested, everything works.
    All that added about 40 mins onto the time (e17 had to be compiled.)
    And I still had plenty of time to mow the lawn

    I'd buy that shirt!
    Also: nicely done! I thought about installing Arch PPC on my iBook but then again, I'd miss Textmate. Maybe on a second partition ... later.

  • [SOLVED]Unable to boot eMac with Arch PPC

    Hi everyone,
    I just got into Arch and I realized there was a PPC port, so I decided to see if I could replace Ubuntu on my eMac (USB 2.0) with it.  Unfortunately, I am unable to boot, getting stuck with the loading of the second-stage bootstrap.  What should I be looking for in order to diagnose and conceivably remedy this issue?
    I get the flashing folder with an alternating Mac face and question mark.
    EDIT: Please see the link to the archlinuxppc-user mailing list for the resolution to my issue.    I hope it helps someone else.

    Hi DaNiMoTh,
    Thanks for the reply.  Well, I have just made a post at the mailing list page, so hopefully it will be approved by the moderators soon.  The situation has somewhat changed as I have attempted to reinstall Arch PPC on the eMac since then.  Now I am immediately taken to the second-stage yaboot screen at boot and I have no access to OpenFirmware.  When I use the Live CD to mount the / and /home partitions of /dev/hda, all I see in / is /home and /lost+found, while in /home all I see is /lost+found.  It appears that Arch PPC never actually installed, and I have no idea why.  I guess the files in /mnt were never copied to /.  I'm so confused by all this, but I really desire to understand what is happening and how I can get this computer up and running.  If you have any thoughts at all, please don't hesitate to share.  I'm completely willing to do some reading, but I have not seen reports of a similar situation yet.
    By the way, my eMac is 32-bit.
    Thanks,
    bkadoctaj
    EDIT: I'm not sure how I can get a log for any of this, especially since it appears the install never completed, even though nothing during the install process suggested that was the case.
    EDIT 2: Forget this thread...  The discussion has been continued over at http://groups.google.com/group/archlinu … f4b89ad2ad
    Thank you for the assistance.

  • Arch PPC - Display not outputting anything

    I've been working with an Apple G4, 1.4(?)Ghz PPC with one of the Apple Display Port monitors, and I've been trying to get arch on it using the install image from the Arch PPC site. So I finally got it to boot correctly, dear god that was more work than it should have been, and it loads the kernel, starts the daemons, but then, when the screen refreshes at the end, nothing. The display appears active, but there is no visible output. No login no nothing. I used the install disk to chroot into the root partition and installed some more packages including: dbus, hal, fam, abs, and openssh. So I added a user configured sshd and rebooted and I can shell into the machine fine. Everything appears to be there, I have no idea why it is doing this. I really have not had the time to do an extensive search in the system for possible errors, but does anyone have any ideas on what it could be and how to fix it?
    Thanks

    There is a mailing list for ppc problems on http://groups.google.it/group/archlinuxppc-user. The archppc devs follow it.

  • Arch PPC OpenOffice: Cannot find libicuuc.so.40

    With a fresh installation of OpenOffice.org (package openoffice-base) on Arch PPC (using an aluminum PowerBook G4), I can't run OpenOffice.  When I run "soffice" in a terminal, it throws the following error message:
    /usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice.bin: error while loading shared libraries: libicuuc.so.40: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    What does libicuuc.so.40 do, why isn't it there, and what can I do to fix it?

    libicuuc.so.40 => libicu.
    http://www.archlinuxppc.org/packages/4756/
    Is it installed ? It has to be installed, because openoffice-base depends on it.

  • Trying to Install Arch PPC

    Hi
    I am trying to install Arch Linux PPC from the ISO on their site. I have run into a problem. When it comes to installing the packages I get and error about "key could not be looked up remotely" with different keys mentioned. I have tried changing the SigLevel  to Never in /etc/pacman.conf but this seems to get over written when I start the package install form the installer (/arch/setup). How can I get round this?
    Thanks
    Robert

    Hi
    Thank you for the reply and information. I have gotten further. I am now stuck at installing the boot loader. I get an error that says:
    Unable to find OpenFirmware path for boot=/dev/sda2
    Please add ofboot=<path> where <path> is the OpenFirmware path to /dev/sda2 to /etc/yaboot.conf
    So I have Googled and that ofpath should give me this information. But I then get this error when I run ofpath /dev/sdb2:
    Unable to determind controller path!
    Am I doing the right thing to find out the OpenFirmware path? Is there anything else I can try?
    Thanks
    Robert

  • Arch/PPC - how can we test...?

    Hi all,
    These last few months, I've been juggling with quite a few linux distro (Arch->Debian unstable->Fedora dev.->Ubuntu dev.->Arch and now I'm back on Arch linux and plan to stick with it!
    However, I have an iBook and would like to test the PPC version of Arch that I heard was under development (ref. LinuxTag).
    So, what is the best way to help testing on PPC...?
    Thanks a lot!

    i'm currently in a phase where i am not on the wired very often. we just recently moved to a new appartment so we dun have a connection at home yet.
    this will end on the 10th of august - hopefully.
    anyway, if i can be of hellp ask me when i'm around or bother cnuke on #archlinux-ppc
    everything you prolly need is hosted on a server that i'd rather not make too public for misc. reasons. but if you ask me nicely i'll provide you with an iso you can boot from at least or a few lines on howto use other distro's bootcds to install arch. simply drop me a line at alexander -dot- baldeck (at) icomedias.com for now.
    sorry for the trouble.

  • Pyqt3 request by weather-forecast of superkaramba (arch=ppc)

    for PPC
    thanks

    Hm, I've been doing some more work on AWeather lately... I don't think there are any Arch packages for it yet, and I don't use Arch myself, but if someone wants to volunteer to make one I might be able to help/answer questions.
    The old wiki page was linked from above, the new development page is here: http://lug.rose-hulman.edu/code/projects/aweather
    There's also IDV, which has quite a bit of support, but is a little tricky to get started with, and requires Java: http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/idv/

  • Silent ARCH process failure

    Our production OLTP (10.1.0.3) has two archivelog destinations, one of which is on a remote physical standby. This afternoon as ARC1 was finishing writing a log to the standby destination, the standby server suffered a hardware emergency and rebooted itself.
    When the standby came back I restarted replication and the archivelog it had started applying before the reboot continued, finished, and then logfile application stopped. Investigation showed that the primary had stopped shipping archivelogs over to the remote destination. In fact, all archival activity had stopped on the primary.
    I was able to force log switches, and checkpoints were being reported in the alert log, but no archivelogs were being created. log_archive_min_succeed_dest is set to 1, so this behavior was blatantly illegal. Stranger yet, both ARC0 and ARC1 were still sitting in the process list. No errors or trace files were ever reported in the alert log. I added some redo logs as a temporary fix and to give the netops people time to bring the website down gracefully, and then I bounced the database.
    The database hung while dismounting. I noticed ARC1 hanging out there in the process list so I killed it, after which the shutdown proceeded normally. Upon startup, the missing archivelogs were created during instance recovery and both ARCH processes resumed normal activities.
    It's a little frightening that an essential service like ARCH could die without any errors being reported, and if I had not just happened to be poking around the redo logs could easily have filled up and brought the website to its knees. Has anyone else ever witnessed such bizarre behavior? My best guess is that the hardware event on the standby "did something" to ARC1 and shut it down, but I don't see how ARC0 could have been affected by that as well.

    Since you can see the panel, the web client process is running on remote computer. The "X" and error message mean the communication between the web client and the server process has problem. This may be the networking problem, or the configuration problem.
    Take a look at this KB. Do you get the same error message? Try to ping the server machine from the web client machine.
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/DFF87FABEE7393B586256945007961FA?OpenDocument
    Also refer to this KB.
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/websearch/93D8E67CDB4F930686256F990067B3ED?OpenDocument
    Is there a firewall on your computer?
    By the way, you can develop both server process and client process on the same machine and test the communication. But you can't run the web client on the same machine, because Lookout webclient player can't be installed with Lookout dev/runtime server at the same time. So, the web client has to be running on remote machine.
    The web server can be on the same machine with Lookout server.

  • Arch PPC issue with creating bootstrap partition

    On second thought, I'm doing good.
    Last edited by Kebertx (2012-01-13 22:35:32)

    On second thought, I'm doing good.
    EDIT: Didn't want to be a help vampire. Something I recently learned about, and felt bad to identify as.
    So, in case anyone is trying to install Arch on a PowerMac G4, and messed up around the mac-fdisk step, I stumbled upon a thing that you shouldn't do.
    After you hit i to initialize the partition map
    DON'T hit p too early to print the table. You're supposed to enter the full block size. Doing this causes fdisk to believe you are setting up a 4 block partition. The bootstrap partition has to be 64 blocks, so that will just be completely non-working.
    A very simple foolhardy mistake. Forgive me forum, I did not see. That little letter p in the wrong line... nightmarish, now that I look back on it.
    The Wiki will lead you well until you get to the kernel.
    # type name length base
    ( size ) system
    /dev/hda1 Apple_partition_map Apple 63 @ 1
    ( 31.5k) Partition map
    /dev/hda2 Apple_Bootstrap bootstrap 1600 @ 64
    (800.0k) NewWorld bootblock
    /dev/hda3 Apple_UNIX_SVR2 root 31457280 @ 1664

    Block size=512, Number of Blocks=156301488
    DeviceType=0x0, DeviceId=0x0
    For the kernel the wiki is giving you something outdated. When you're installing the base, do this:
    pacman -r /mnt -S base --ignore linux-pmac64 --ignore linux-pmac
    And installing the kernel is like this:
    pacman -r /mnt -S linux-pmac
    pacman -r /mnt -S linux-pmac64
    ^If you are using x64.^
    Am I a helpful community member now?

    Hello Raj,
    Thanks once again for the answer.
    I have a WebLogic Express 8.1 (A servlet conrainer only).
    The webservices that I am developing doesn't use any of the EJB stuff, all they need is a servlet container and SOAP plumbing.
    Since the webservices that I am trying to deploy are developed using the workshop 8.1, they have EJB stuff bundled with in them and I can't deploy them on a servlet conrainer.
    Is there a way that I can create webservices using the workshop IDE but end up with no EJB dependencies in the application EAR.
    I really appreciate your help.
    Regards,
    Kishore.

  • Restart problems

    Hi
    After a restart the Mac would not start, I got the bong but then only half of my USBs lit and the caps lock was lit and I only got a gray screen. I forced closed down and restarted but got he same, I did this once more but then had to unplug leave for half an hour then started the Mac again but had to do it once more before it started. I have noticed that I have only had this problem after updating to 10.5.8 When after updating it asked me to restart the same things happened, so it seems to be a problem with 10.5.8 or restarting.

  • Imac G4 install boot issue: Blank screen

    Hi!
    I'm trying t get archppc on an old g4 with 512 ram (the infamous iLamp). I get the cd to boot part way, but then I get a blank screen, and the computer doesn't move forward. I tried using the option that does something to the video (sorry, I forgot what it was called. I'll try getting it in a few minutes), but it did the same thing. I'm using xubuntu right now, but it's like puling a trailer with a coupe. I want just what I need: openbox, internet, terminal. So anything else is quite useless.
    Thanks a lot!

    Hi! I may come  too late!
    I installed Arch ppc on a Mac mini G4 a few months ago.
    After udev was parsing the hooks,  had a ' black screen flash' then 'nothing' (reading my notes, I can't remember if it was a white screen, but I had that one when trying to install other systems like Debian or Crux on ppc machines when it was about communicating with  GPU).
    On Arch ppc, the way through the problem was to reboot from the install cd, chrooting again, and edit yaboot.conf adding these two lines after the proper boot image :
    append="video=radeonfb"
    append="radeon.agpmode=-1"
    Your GPU is most probably an ATI and should be ok with that, but check anyway.
    And don't forget to
    ybin -v
    again before rebooting!
    Hope this helps someone, if not the OP.

  • [archppc] How stable is it ?

    I have a MacMini (G4 processor) currently running Debian. I use it as a home server (http, ftp, svn). The thing is... I can't stand Debian anymore. I really love Arch but I don't know if the ppc version is stable enough to be installed on a little server, and I can't find linux ppc equivalents to arch.
    So, what do you think ? Should I go for ArchPPC or should I really avoid it ? If so, what distro do you recommand ?

    Ok, here's my installation report
    I used Installation on newworld machines document. Evrything went great before this part :
    4) Create a chrooted archlinuxppc
    - Mount chroot
    mount -t proc none /mnt/proc
    mount -t sysfs none /mnt/sys
    mount /mnt /bin/bash
    source /etc/profile
    udevstart
    The line mount /mnt /bin/bash should be chroot /mnt /bin/bach. Then udevstart doesn't exists anymore, it's /etc/start_udev
    The problem is : I can't start udev unless the kernel is installed. So I jumped to the next step :
    5) Edit configuration files
    file /etc/fstab; /etc/rc.conf, /etc/yaboot.conf, /etc/hosts
    You should add file /etc/resolv.conf else pacman runs in trouble when trying to download packages (can't resolve host).
    I stopped to this step because I'm lost :
    6) Install kernel & openssh
    pacman -Sy kernel26-pmac openssh
    Pacman works, except that it can't generate initrd image :
    [root@arch-ppc /]# mkinitrd auto
    Checking Input...
    Making image for standard Arch kernel (2.6.16-ARCH)...
    Setting up Parameters...
    /lib/modules/2.6.16-ARCH found
    ERROR: All of your loopback devices are in use!
    If you any idea of what I could do to fix it, I would be pleased to try it.
    Thanks in advance !
