Arch Repositories: VMWare

Why not to add VMWare Workstation to official repositories or ABS?

As far as I know, what you find in the official repos is only what the devs use themselves. You can still find WMWare in the AUR though.

  • Can't install arch in vmware fusion , /dev/tty7 error

    I have the latest vmware fusion ,I downloaded the i686 core iso image.
    I use vmware fusion (the latest)  i select the default options , when I get to setup if i select "auto prepare harddrive" it fails and tells me to see /dev/tty7 which I can't .
    So i manually partition, and then when I select files to install I get the error "cannot start pacman see /dev/tty7"
    So i thought maybe the disc image was bad, Ive downloaded the iso from different sites/sources with the same problem. It would seem vmware should be the easiest to install to.
    I read the wiki but I don't understand, I have no other issues installing other linux distros in vmware fusion.

    Ok got past the auto partition error issue, instead of selecting the first option to install arch from the live disc, select the 2nd option for IDE with no sata drivers in vmware fusion. I think it takes care of both problems

  • Arch as Vmware guest broken?

    Hi!
    For the past couple of weeks!! (ever since systemd 'upgrade') things in vmware-land have been going from bad to worse.
    I have Arch setup as a guest within vmware running on a windoes host. (Also on a mac host, same problems)
    Now, I migrated the system to systemd, and basically had a functioning vm (with copy & paste, timesync etc.).
    There was one problem though, shared folders would not work.
    More specifically when trying to 'ls' the folder (or indeed accessing it any other way) the kernel would OOPS, basically freez up.
    Others are having the same problem, there's even an official bug-report with open-vm-tools.
    Same problem, and here.
    Bug Report for open-vm-tools.
    There's a comment there about this being fixed with the latest build (9.2.2) but that is not the case.
    I've also updated vmware workstation today from 9.0.0 to 9.0.1 with no change.
    But thing are getting even worse.
    See this bug has been preventing me from updating xorg-server & xorg-server-common from 1.13.0-3 1.13.0-4 as I was seeing the exact same issue as mentioned in the report, and as of yesterday:
    libglapi (9.0-1 -> 9.0.1-1)
    libegl (9.0-1 -> 9.0.1-1)
    libgl (9.0-1 -> 9.0.1-1)

    I can run i3 (no compositing) without such problems though, in fact I'm posting from it right now...
    EDIT:
    I forgot one further problem.
    On shutdown/reboot the system hangs, as mentioned here
    So, has anyone else got some or all of these issues, knows of any solutions?

    So, finally some success - problem now is I don't know what actually solved it.
    I managed to get Shared folders to work!!
    Now either this just started working after the last kernel upgrade (3.6.6-1 -> 3.6.7-1) OR It's down to this small configuration detail I took away from your config p0x8!!!
    I noticed you were giving the name of your share (.host:/docs, whereas I was omitting it. Adding the correct name resulted in me being able to access my shared folder.
    For completeness:
    $ cat /etc/systemd/system/mnt-hgfs.automount
    [Unit]
    Description=Load VMware shared folders
    ConditionPathExists=.host:/Shared
    [Automount]
    Where=/mnt/hgfs
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    $ cat /etc/systemd/system/mnt-hgfs.mount
    [Unit]
    Description=Load VMware shared folders
    ConditionPathExists=.host:/Shared
    [Mount]
    What=.host:/Shared
    Where=/mnt/hgfs
    Type=vmhgfs
    #Options=defaults,noatime
    Options=uid=1000,gid=100,fmask=0113,dmask=0022,permissions,nodev,nosuid,exec,nls=utf8,noatime
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    Maybe I'll downgrade the kernel just to see if it still works, but if that's not the case, this is a bug, as I can omit the Shared folder's name in an ubuntu-guest for instance.
    Thanks again for trying this out p0x8!!
    UPDATE:
    I went ahead and downgraded the kernel, and can now confirm that the problem was down to this configuration issue, not the kernel.
    The issues remaining are gnome3's shell is broken, I am forced to use fallback-mode (great that its still around imho, because things DO break), the latest update to xorg-server and xorg-server-common cause X to crash instantly(version 1.13.1-1 works), and the shut-down delay.(see a few posts down)

  • OpenGL math class thats in Arch repositories / AUR?

    Hey,
    Doing a university project on Arch (actually larch, because it has to be portable to other computers..)
    Anyone knows of a good OpenGL math class (C++) thats in the repositories / AUR?
    That math class should have an API as similar to OpenGL's as possible.
    My goal is to do matrix manipulations out side of OpenGL (glRotate, glTranslate etc. - but BEFORE giving the matrix to OpenGL).
    Thanks a lot

  • Arch Repositories

    When packages are updated in the main repository, are they simultaneously updated in all Arch pacman mirrors? When I used Zenwalk, there was a European/French server that always was more up-to-date, so I could conceivably mess up my system by mixing mirrors.
    The main reason I'm asking is because the EasyNews (Arizona) server was unable to send me updates this morning, so I rearranged my mirrors with iBiblio first, which appeared to work fine.

    I switched all of mine to Ibiblio. The one problem with the current Arch installer is that, by selecting a preferred mirror, all others are commented out in the various mirrors files, which means there's no fallback if one mirror's down.

  • Packages installed are not the same version as the arch repositories

    Hi, i just installed arch and kde with it and realized that i don't get the latest version of KDE as listed under "packages" in this website.
    I get KDE SC 4.4.x instead of 4.5.x
    I also noted that a lot of packages listed in here throw a "cant find package", for example bluedevil. I tried pacman -Syy and still no good. Says KDE 4.4.x is the latest.

  • Arch Linux freezes the whole system in VMware

    Hi,
    I use Windows Vista as main OS and I'm trying to install Arch on VMware, the problem is, when I log in into the console and try to type anything else, it will crash my host system (Vista).
    This is very weird because:
    a) I'm running a virtual Gentoo on VMware and it doesn't freeze as Arch.
    b) Arch Linux doesn't freeze the system if I use VirtualBox instead of VMware
    c) I did a clean install of XP (just for testing purposes) and virtual Arch also crashed the system.
    This is confusing me because:
    a) Why does Gentoo work and Arch doesn't? Are there base configurations/software so different that one works and the other doesn't?
    b) Why can VirtualBox handle Arch and VMware can't?
    c) Even a clean install can't handle Arch on VMware? Does this mean it's something wrong in my hardware? How come if Gentoo works on VMware and VirtualBox handles Arch?
    Please note that I can't use VirtualBox, I must use VMware and I would really like to use Arch instead of Gentoo. I'm trying to ditch Gentoo and use Arch but this problem is leaving me no choice than to keep using Gentoo...
    Any ideas?

    Ranguvar wrote:Is it that you can't use VBox, or you must use VMware? There are still other virtual machine apps.
    I know, but I want to use VMware. I don't like VirtualBox that much and VMware is better for me. The other virtual machine apps don't even come close to VMware, at least in my point of view. But it doesn't matter, I want to use VMware.
    Ranguvar wrote:Anyways, is it the Arch install CD that crashes, or is it Arch after it has been installed? Have you read http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … _in_VMWare ?
    After installation, it never crashed during the install as far as I remember.
    Ranguvar wrote:Do you get any specific error messages from Windows? Are you using the latest version of VMware? Can you at least try VirtualBox to help isolate the problem?
    No specific error messages, nothing in the log files, there's nothing anywhere... Yes, I'm using the latest version. What do you mean try VirtualBox to help isolate the problem? I've already used VirtualBox, installed Arch fine and it didn't freeze.
    Ranguvar wrote:This is very odd, and may actually indicate a problem with hardware, or something... a virtual machine should NOT be able to bring down the host, under any circumstances. If it can, both the OS and the virtual machine are bugged. Not too much of a surprise, but yeah.
    My thoughts exactly but how can be an hardware problem if VirtualBox works just fine? How can it be a virtual machine problem if Gentoo works fine on VMware?
    fumbles wrote:Sounds like a problem with VMware (or maybe Vista?) not Arch. Try reinstalling VMware, make sure it is at the lastest version (maybe try even roll back to the previous version), make sure Vista is updated. When you say crash, do you mean BSoD? Or does it just freeze? If it is a BSoD then what is the specific error?
    It just freezes, not a BSOD. It is not a problem with Vista because it also happens on XP. Like I said on my first post, I did a clean install of XP, update all drivers and did all Windows updates, installed latest VMware version and the same thing still happened.
    Joe_Arch wrote:How much ram are you allocating to Arch? Counterintuitively, you might want to try lowering it. If you allocate too much your host OS freaks out.
    I have 2Gb (2x1024Mb) installed on my laptop and I'm using just 256Mb for Arch.
    jacko wrote:someone else was having this issue the other day on irc. the fact is a guest OS should NEVER even come close to crashing the host OS. So more then likely this is a bug in VMware and not arch. What arch packages that is causing the conflict with VMware is unapparent, but it's not likely a bug arch can fix.
    That was me... I'm not saying it's a bug on Arch, but it's weird that Gentoo doesn't have a problem and Arch does. They must differ somehow, one must use some package where the other doesn't or some global system configuration is different from one to the other, there must be some difference, otherwise, they both would freeze or they both would work...

  • [Solved] Arch (0.7.1) and vmware - pacman network trouble?

    I've installed Arch 0.7.1 using VMware on Windows XP to test it (only the base system so far, mostly due to my problem: I can ping hosts, even arch mirrors, but when I do an 'pacman -Sy' it just stalls at 0% downloading/syncing 'current' package database.
    Any suggestions?

    cactus wrote:Do you have a firewall that is disallowing ftp traffic (active or passive ftp)?
    Do you have winderz firewall running?
    Are you using a vmware 'bridged' network connection, or a vmware 'nat' network connection?
    - No Windows Firewall, but my router is also a firewall, but it allows "all" outbound.
    - I'm using bridged network. I can ping the vmware host (windows xp) from arch inside vmware (and internet sites such as ftp.heanet.ie (one of the mirrors) and www.vg.no etc.
    I've commented out every repo in /etc/pacman.d/current except for ftp.heanet.ie (which I can ping from arch), but it just stalls. I'm on a 2Mbit SDSL connection btw.
    If I just let it stall (if that's what it does) for a while, it restarts or something. At least the
    current [ ] 0% 0K 0.0K/s 00:00:00
    line repeats, at 0%.
    I also disabled extra (community and testing was already disabled) in pacman.conf and tried a 'pacman -S lftp'. It stalls just like with sync-refresh, trying to download expat package (which was a dependency for lftp).
    I had no problem downloading the file from the same location from windows (ftp://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/ftp.archlin … pkg.tar.gz).

  • VMware Player and mouse not behaving correctly with the vmmouse driver

    I'm running Arch on VMware Player and having problems with the mouse behavior.
    - Arch is updated, 32 -bit
    - VMware Player 6.0.1
    - Host is Windows 8.1 64-bit
    - XFCE 4.10
    If I install xf86-input-vmmouse, the following happens:
    - If cursor touches the edge of the screen when scrolling a window with the scroll bar, scrolling stops. If I continue pressing the mouse button and moving the mouse (and not touching any edges), the scrolling starts working again after two seconds.
    - When opening any new window, hovering and clicking will register only after two seconds. This is very noticeable when opening the application menu and trying to launch any app - first click never works.
    Uninstalling the vmmouse driver fixes the above problems. The mouse "feeling" gets very bad though, it seems jumpy and the acceleration is crazy and can't be tweaked to be satisfactory with the mouse settings. With vmmouse the mouse feels otherwise just fine.
    Installing or uninstalling Open-VM-Tools doesn't do anything.
    I tried this, but it had no effect: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … s_expected
    Happens both in fullscreen and windowed, scrolling behavior happens every time, hover/click lag is not so predictable (seems to happen 50 % of the time).
    Might there be any easy fix for this?

  • Running vmware-user-suid-wrapper stops keyboard/mouse input

    I'm attempting to run Arch under VMWare Fusion 3 in Mac OS X.  I have previously run Arch on a variety of Windows and Linux machines using VirtualBox without issue. (I would use VirtualBox on the Mac as well, but it's performance is incredibly slow.)
    I followed the instructions in the Wiki here:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … _in_VMware
    However, when I run the command as listed in the guide:
    $ ls -l /usr/bin/vmware-user-suid-wrapper
    the wrapper's permissions are
    -rwsr-sr-t 1 root root
    rather than what is shown in the wiki.  If I then attempt to execute vmware-user-suid-wrapper, the system stops accepting input from my mouse and keyboard.  Executing the command via sudo does nothing, nor does running chmod 4755 as suggested in the guide.
    Any ideas?

    Hello,
    One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
    PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
    If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
    Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
    Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • [~solved] agetty --- print number of vconsoles and switch in vmware?

    dear arch experts---l am running a standard non-GUI arch in vmware fusion.  I am now trying to switch between gettys (virtual consoles).  this requires sending ctrl-alt-f1 through ctrl-alt-f6, accdg to https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Getty .
    first, I want to check how many virtual consoles I have.   getty isn't mentioned in /etc/ anymore.  the only time any mention to getty occurs in /var/log is in /var/log/pacman.log .  I looked at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Systemd_FAQ ps.  by default, "ps -aux" shows that there is no running agetty process.  I can start one with systemctl start [email protected] (at which point they are suspended).
    second, I want to switch to it in vmware fusion.  this isn't really an arch question.  I need to send the ctrl-alt-f2.  vmware docs say that I need to type ctrl-alt-space followed by the f-key (while holding space), but that does not do anything.  this could be because I don't have any virtual terminals, or because I am not sending the right key-sequence.  (I don't think there is a command line utility to switch virtual consoles, either.)
    does anyone else run non-GUI arch as a guest in vmware fusion with virtual terminals?
    /iaw

    That's not me but I'm going to answer anyway
    As your link says there is only one TTY launched at startup, others are activated by pressing <Ctrl>+<Alt>+F2-F6; the number of auto-activated TTYs is capped to six but his can be increased.

    I run Arch on the bare metal so I don't know about your second query.

  • VMware Tools problem

    I install Arch on VMware Workstation 6.5.2 and follow this guide http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … tation_6.5 to install VMware Tools, but I find that the VMware Tools is not correctly installed, because if I run command ps -e | grep ".vm.", the output should like this
    $ ps -e | grep ".vm."
    1765 ? 00:00:00 vmhgfs
    3589 ? 00:00:00 vmmemctl
    3637 ? 00:00:02 vmware-guestd
    4090 ? 00:00:01 vmware-user
    but what I get is like this
    $ ps -e | grep ".vm."
    3014 ?        00:00:06 vmware-guestd
    the modules vmhgfs and vmmemctl are not created by the installation script, that is why although I add this line ".host:/ /mnt/hgfs vmhgfs defaults,user,ttl=5,uid=root,gid=root,fmask=0133,dmask=0022 0 0" to /etc/fstab and create a folder /mnt/hgfs, I still can not mount the share folder that I assign in the guest setting, the command vmware-hgfsclient confirms that the share folder is correctly assigned.
    $ vmware-hgfsclient
    sda2
    Does anyone ever experience the same problem? and is there any solution to fix it? thanks for reply.

    I just run the script vmware-config-tools.pl again, but the problem persists, can anyone help? thanks a lot.
