Arch with E17 or Elive?

Hi all
this is my first message to this forum and I am a newbie to Linux in general. I would like to congratulate witth all of you for the work you are doing. I am an admirer of Linux developers and users.
I know you guys are in the majority gurus so please be patient. I hope this forum is better than other linux forums I have seen recently.
My question is: I am planning to nuke my windows and to switch to Linux after having tried Ubuntu and Kubuntu. I saw E17 and I think I want to use that DE. Now, the options I seem to like is to use Arch with E17 or Elive. Both would be E17 and they are both reportedly very fast distros.
Honestly, what would you suggest me? Elive seems to be stable (Debian-based) and born with E17, but have really few people taking part in the forums and they are not really helpful, while Arch seems to be more difficult, maybe less stable but the community seem better. Also what are the longtime prospects for both distros in your opinion? I mean I wouldn't like to switch distro in one year from now just because the developers can't make it anymore... I also like that Arch is famous for its good documentation... I really like to have something read.
Any opinion would be appreciated, but please no rtfm

I have no experience with Elive, but used Debian for some time.
The development cycle in Debian was TOO SLOW!  Debian's quest for stability, while noble and effective, leaves users with ancient versions of software for far to long a time for my taste.  Arch often times has new versions ready before I even knew they were released.
Add in 'package hell' with old versions of packages and libraries trying to mix with newer and user built packages, and it leaves me foaming at the mouth
Arch not only is way ahead of the pack when it comes to keeping current, it's package management is top notch.  I can't imagine living life in Linux without pacman now that I have been using it this long.
As a long time distro-hopper, the fact that I have used the same flavor of Linux for over a year is a testament to the power Arch has.  It is certainly worth taking for a spin.
Edit: Also, Arch was the first distro that I used that made me feel comfortable enough to take windows clean off of the system.  All the other ones made me cling to the security blanket.  After using arch for a month or 2 I realized I never booted windows anymore, and it was simply wasting disk space.

  • Arch with Xen-server patch

    Okey, here's my problem:
    I want to run Arch with the Xen patch, unfortunatly the latest version if it only supports kernel 2.6.13.x.
    This means that I somehow need to get udev to work with this kernel setup, my problem right now is that downgradeing udev to a version that doesn't require 2.6.15 reaks havoc over my system since it seems the initscripts are not adjusted to handle this. I tried downgradeing udev resulting in a machine that went ballistic whenever I booted it.
    Does anyone have a nice, simple and good solution on how to make Archlinux run with 2.6.13, the Xen patch and a udev version that's satisfactory by todays standards and requirements?
    PS. I heard a rumor about a patch that gave the 2.6.13 kernel the uevent stuff needed for running newer versions of udev, is this just a rumor or is there acctually such a patch? (And ofcourse I've googled around quite abit before I asked here) DS.

    I might have an answer to your problem, but not exactly what you are expecting.
    - I found on xen newsgroups that as soon as the kernel 2.6.16 is available they will update their binary packages, so you can wait for this one to happen.
    - I modified xen-unstable package from AUR, so it compiles Xen kernel 2.6.15 in the process and one does not have to change almost anything (one has to rename /lib/tls to improve Xen performance).
    If you have time give a try to the following package (maintainer is the name of the guy who put it in AUR - don't ask him for help please). As you can see I'm building full kernel with /usr/src/ stuff so one can compile modules for Xen. I have not tested it fully, I compiled it, booted and started creating virtual machine and then went snowboarding and came back last weekend. I give absolutely no warranty that it will work it did for me though:

    I created 2 patches to have usable package. The source code from the xen website builds linux-2.6-xen0 and linux-2.6-xenU which are development kernels - they have almost no modules except for the basic ones. One should build the kernel linux-2.6-xen that can work as xen0 or xenU and has all modules.

  • Arch with X & DE pre-installed?

    Hey there,
    I'm new with arch but have a year and half experience with ubuntu.
    I've read the wiki & really liked The Arch Way.
    Well, I would like to know if there is a version or edition or something of arch with any X & DE pre-installed on it (like gnome etc) because We are using 128 kbps DSL linx here, in IRAN, so i can't install gnome on every workstation or installation from the repo.s .
    Any ideas?

    I'm ok with that but not my clients they are non-geex. Just tell them to right click on the desktop & they panic!
    So i think i should keep the pleasure of using Arch for myself & let them use what they're using until we have good infrastructure in IRAN for Real High Speed Linx (But i don't think it happens as long as we have IT minister that says: I'm sure 64 kbps is more than enough for every one!!!!!!!!!)

  • Install Arch with PXE?

    Hello,
    I'm trying to install Arch with PXE, and for this I'm using two VM in VirtualBox. I've followed all steps in the Wiki, also I tried to use a script ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ar … pxe_server ).
    Following the main PXE wiki article, when I mount the archlinux-boot image, I can't find isolinux subfolder in order to copy contents into /var/tftpd/ folder. Article seems to be out of date.
    ¿Any idea? I've dhcpd server running and I executed mkpxelinux -c=/etc/mkpxelinux.conf command, but I don't know what I need to do right now.

    archiso-pxe-server script try to keep compatible with old (untested) and new nbd.
    Try this on ramfs prompt:

    Download a recent update archiso-pxe-server-20101012 (just now)

  • Install Arch with dual graphics laptop

    Hey everybody,
    So a few months ago I bought a new laptop, and ASUS X750JN. After I have my new laptop on my hands the first thing was install Arch Linux, but I came across an problem with graphics, probably a bad configuration and because I needed the computer for the university, I keep Windows for a while. Now that I have some time, I want to return to my beloved Arch but I have a serious question, the computer has 2 graphics cards, on-board Intel and an Nvidia and my question is, how can I install Arch and use Nvidia for some games like ETS, CS:GO and Guns of Icarus? When I tried installing before, the VGA was the Intel and not the Nvidia.
    I know that Hybrid Graphics aren't full supported in Linux, but is there a way to use Arch with the Nvidia, even if only uses Nvidia.

  • Software package list for best experience of Arch with Gnome DE.

    I have been a long time Ubuntu user but due to power regression issues have to stop using it on new laptop (Thinkpad T420). Arch linux is the obvious choice to try and i did try it this weekend. I like the base and i think i might stay with it. I seems to have far better battery life without any tweaking - low temperature, no fan no TLP no kernel issues so far. I am having problem setting up Arch linux because of its stripped down nature. I guess i will have to read a lot to make it work me.
    My question is i might not be having best experience of Arch with gnome. Is their a list or meta package like ubuntu-desktop which will install all/most of the commonly used programs and settings and from their i can customize it? Or is tweaking done in bits and pieces in Arch?

    There is no meta-package like ubuntu-desktop in Arch. You have to build your system the way you find it most comfortable.

  • Installing Arch with intel wireless (iwlwifi-3945)

    i have tried various times in the past few weeks to install arch with minimal success.  The only time i was able to actually set up a system that would allow me to get to a gui and use the internet was when i had an install of Archie Linux (Live CD)  that i had to chroot with kubuntu to add wireless support.  Needless to say i preferred a cleaner install (especially after having to manually rename the folders, etc. for the repository changes).
    Anyways when arch is loading it makes mention of needing to append the boot image to include intel-wireless.  i was wondering what exactly was involved in doing that.  Because after trying to just install the package ifconfig does not show my wlan device.  Any help is appreciated.  let me know if more info is needed.

    I have Arch with iwl3945 drivers running here just fine. No tweaks to the cpio image needed.
    I have never heard of this either... You need both the drivers and the firmware. Check dmesg if everything is okay. Ifconfig -a should show a wlan0 device, if not, something went wrong.

  • I want to dual boot windows 7 and Arch with an HDD caddy.

    I am thinking of two possiblities with this scenario.  I want to first leave my windows 7 install on the hard drive that came with my laptop, and leave that HDD where it is, but in a few days, i'm getting a caddy so i can switch my optical drive for another HDD, which is going to be a 250gb.  On the 250, i want to experiment with arch, and maybe other linux distros, so i can get a nice feel for linux once again, it's been about 2 years since I've played with it.  What i am hoping to maybe do is switch those hard drives out, if I can get a linux install i feel 100% comfortable with, and running the windows HDD in the caddy, and the linux HDD installed in the motherboard.
    I just have a few questions though.  First, is it possible to boot Arch when it is an HDD caddy? and second, would windows possibly work if i moved that hard drive into the caddy later?

    Yes, and yes.  Both should be quite easy.
    You should be able to set you BIOS to boot from one or the other - or alternately you can chainload windows from a linux boot loader quite easily (if/when linux is on the drive that the BIOS has selected to boot).

  • Libre office can not start in arch with lxde (clucene was installed)

    installed Arch on Asus Eee Pc 900 (very old, cpu - 900 MHz, ram 1 G)
    then installed lxde and libre office.
    the problem is that Libre Office can not start and show the message with
    a language I don't understand. It say that:

  • [SOLVED] Arch with kernel 3.15.1 hangs/reboots in early boot

    Recently I bought Asrock D1800B-ITX and I installed Arch without seeing any error messages.
    However, when I rebooted to the installed system, the kernel hangs after printing "Booting the kernel."
    What should I do next to troubleshoot this?
    PC spec:
    CPU: Intel Celeron J1800
    Mobo: Asrock D1800B-ITX (BIOS version 1.4)
    RAM: Transcend DDR3L-1333 2G x2 (passes memtest86+ 5+ times)
    SSD: Crucial m4 64GB (M4-CT064M4SSD1)
    What I tried to do:
    The installation method is the same as the Beginners' guide on the ArchWiki.
    Arch ISO 2014.06.01 written in a USB memstick by dd is used to install Arch.
    Both UEFI (tried first) and BIOS installation won't work.
    Changing the HOOKS variable in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf won't affect the symptom (tried "base udev ...", "base systemd ..." and "systemd ...").
    The kernel from linux-lts package (3.10.44 as of writing) and 3.14.4 (included in Arch ISO 2014.06.01) boots.
    The console output (tty0) from the kernel with "debug" appended to the kernel parameter is messed up like the image if framebuffer is enabled.
    If framebuffer is disabled, I got some error messages like this image("debug" appended).

  • Newly installed Arch with gnome3 - Sound issue

    Hello fellow archs!
    I'm having such a huge issue at the moment with the sound.
    Got alsa installed, and alsaconfig cant find a thing on my motherboard.
    I will try to post the essential information so maybe someone will notice that I have done something wrong

    wrong approach - if using gnome-shell it does need to be there.
    I not only have an idea ~ but i do know how to fix your problem (i just need to read up, because off-hand i can't tell you how to do it).
    i ALWAYS disable PA - because it is crap!   i also think it is stupid that gnome -developers decided to make it a static dependency, when there are so many issues with it.

    Hello! I'm new in arch so I have lots of dubious and problems. I'm italian so I can't write in english very well, sorry for my mistakes!
    I have a "big" (big for me) problems:
    1) I can't move icons on my desktop. My desktop appear as it is blocked but it is unblocked! I can't move icons and rename them! What I can do to solve?
    *I have another dubious: I want do a dual boot with windows and I have all my hdd occupated by a partition of arch. I'd reduce this partition for put windows. But I can't reduce it because it's mounted on /home. Can I umounted the partition? And how can I do umounted it?
    For now it's enough.

  • Installing Arch with UNetbootin, error

    I'm trying to install Arch on my HP dv1040 laptop with UNetBootin and haven't been able to do much.  When I boot up and select UNetbootin, linux starts running and decompressing and stuff but then it says "Waiting 30 seconds for device /dev/archiso" and fails to find it.  I'm kinda lost for what to do.  I've tried reinstalling UNetbootin like 5 times with different options such as using my iso image, or letting UNet download it for me.  Can anyone help me?
    I have WinXP as my current OS.

    sudo dd bs=8M if=archlinux-2009.08-netinstall-i686.img of=/dev/sdc
    Works only for the netinstall images though. I'll get an error during install with core, but this might also be because my usb stick is fubar.

    You should try to use the netinstall images with UNetBootin. I had no luck with the core ones and unetbootin though.
    Another solution should be to boot from an ubuntu livecd/usb-stick (works with unetbootin, I already tried it) and then dd the image on the usb stick as the wiki says: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Off … tion_Media

  • Trying to install Arch with Ubuntu hardy already installed

    I have Ubuntu already installed on my system and I want to install Arch on a separate 10gig partition ( which is already made) but when I boot from the Arch cd and go to install Arch only sees the main drive it doesn't see anything else what am I doing wrong. I only want to install arch on the 10 gig partition for now until I am more familiar with Linux

    I have just read that  it is informative but I am not sure of what that will do inorder for me to be able to install Arch on My tem gig partition, when I am in ubuntu I stat gparted to see what the names of my partitions are and this is what it shows /dev/sda3 swap     1gig /dev/ sda2 reiserfs 10 gigs ( where I want to install Arch)  sda1 / Ubuntu how do I install arch onto dev/sda 2 ) the ten gig partition) if arch doesn't see it? do I have to delete the partition or formaste the 10 gig partition differently? I am pretty new to Linux so I am not sure of how to do this.

    This is done exactly the same way that Arch linux is loaded. Here we assume that the other distro is on partition [s/h]da3.

This way the auto-magic stuff of some distro will manage the menu.lst on (hd0,2) (if it is grub) for its own distro and you will boot with all the option needed (like the correct last kernel) without the need to copy/paste some part of that menu.lst into yours.
    In our example [1], GRUB is in the MBR and some other bootloader (BL) (be it grub or lilo) is in the Boot Record of (hd0,2).
