HAL doesn't recognize my ext. drive with 1500GB, the 500GB one works
Hi there
Some days ago I bought a 1500GB external harddrive, but after plugin it in via USB, it doesn't appear in my file manager. I tested it with thunar and pcmanfm, with both it didn't work. I don't think, that it's their fault, I think HAL doesn't like my new drive. My older one with 500GB is automounted as it should be. And I also don't think, that its a hardware issue, because in an ubuntu live-session it works with both harddrives.
This is how the two drives are partitioned
Disk /dev/sdb: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x0008941c
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 1 60801 488384001 83 Linux
Disk /dev/sdc: 1500.3 GB, 1500301910016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 182401 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x0004aa3c
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdc1 1 182401 1465136001 83 Linux
As you can see, no difference here. The drive with 1500GB has xfs as filesystem, the 500GB has jfs, but that isn't the reason, I tried many filesystems on the 1500GB one and it didn't work with all of them
In the AUR, there appeared a new packaged called devicekit and I thought, that this might spit out some helpful informations. I used the command "devkit -m"

I hope someone finds some useful informations in these lines!
If you have some other test tools or command lines or whatever I could do to give you more or better informations, please let me know!
p.s.: Right in this moment I was thinking about recompiling HAL with less patches, but even Arch uses many, so I'm not really sure which one or which combination could even be the reason. But I'll try it without any patch now right after posting this thread.I'm having a problem kind of like this. I have a 1TB Western Digital MyBook. It has the option of running in RAID0 or RAID1. I have it in RAID0 for more storage. My computer seems to find it, but it doesn't mount and it doesn't show up in /dev/.
Here's what dmesg says when I plug it in

The last line says that it can't find the "scsi:t-0x0d" module, but I can't find what I would need to enable to get that module. I can't find any related modules in the standard arch modules either. I'm using a custom kernel and I can't boot the standard arch kernel to test because it says something like "/dev/sda5" cannot be found and then it panics (the same startup options work fine on my custom kernel, the standard flips out for some reason). -
forgot my adminpassword, i have tried the reboot with initial disk didn't work, i am able to get into my computer with name and password, but this same name and password doesn't work as an administrators password when i want to download or change things.
do you have any suggestions? Im about to give up, i can't even access wireless have to use a dsl
pretty sad... this same name and password doesn't work as an administrators password when i want to download or change things.
It's probably that your Keychain password is not the same as your login password. If you configured your computer to log you in automatically, you may not have used your login password in so long you forgot it.
There is no way to retrieve the "login" Keychain password, but you can reset the Keychain from the Preferences menu: select it in the Keychain Access menu and select "Reset My Default Keychain". This will create a new, empty Keychain but the old one will be saved should you ever remember its password.
The result of this is that you will have to supply passwords for everything that requires it, since without your Keychain they will no longer automatically fill themselves. However, once you supply them and store them in your new Keychain, they will be remembered. -
Installing Arch with intel wireless (iwlwifi-3945)
i have tried various times in the past few weeks to install arch with minimal success. The only time i was able to actually set up a system that would allow me to get to a gui and use the internet was when i had an install of Archie Linux (Live CD) that i had to chroot with kubuntu to add wireless support. Needless to say i preferred a cleaner install (especially after having to manually rename the folders, etc. for the repository changes).
Anyways when arch is loading it makes mention of needing to append the boot image to include intel-wireless. i was wondering what exactly was involved in doing that. Because after trying to just install the package ifconfig does not show my wlan device. Any help is appreciated. let me know if more info is needed.pl2lnce wrote:

I have Arch with iwl3945 drivers running here just fine. No tweaks to the cpio image needed.
I have never heard of this either... You need both the drivers and the firmware. Check dmesg if everything is okay. Ifconfig -a should show a wlan0 device, if not, something went wrong.

Since 1.1.0 stability is just fine. Throughput is still a problem though. I get like 2.8 MBps with earlier versions, and the 1.1.21 one can hit it too, but mostly it's around 1 MBps . I prefer that to yet another proprietary package though. It's not every day I transfer a few GB to my wired server .

I'm using Windows 7 and Firefox 8.0.1 on a PC. This is frustrating. I like Firefox, but it keeps popping up every 10 minutes when it's minimized and I'm working in another program. I can't continue to use it if this can't be fixed. I just switched from 3.6 and never had any problems. Also, no settings have been changed.
Great suggestion! It looks like one problem has been solved. I started Firefox in safe mode and the problem didn't occur. Then I restarted in regular mode and individually disabled one add-on at a time. What I found is that with Better Privacy disabled, the pop-up no longer occurred. So step one, identifying the source of the problem, is complete. Now onto step two, finding out what setting in Better Privacy is causing the problem. There's nothing that stands out to me as the culprit. Any ideas? Thanks again!

How can I access my apps? They are all greyed out in itunes. I have tried restoring my iphone to factory settings but that didn't work. I have a feeling it may have something to with the restrictions settings on my phone restrictions are on) but it won't allow me to change the restrictions without putting in a passcode. I don't remember ever having a passcode and after several attempts have not been able to get the right code.
Also. on my phone, in settings, personal hotspot, iCloud and Twitter are greyed out. And, the App Store icon is missing from my screen as well.
Can anybody help me with this?
Thanksyep, unfortunately can't reset without the passcode either.
With regards to doing a restore, do you mean:
open itunes on my computer
click on my device on the left
go to the device summary
click restore
it then asks if i want to back up before i restore (to which i say no)
then it asks me if i'm sure I want to restore to factory settings and that all of me media and data will be erased and replaced with the newest version ( to which I say yes)
then it takes about 90 mins to do this but when I look at my phone, everything is exactly the same.
Am I missing something? Obviously I'm technologically challenged, but I HAVE to get to the bottom of this! -
I have iphone 4s with iO6. My problem is I can no longer update my apps since "cannot connect to itunes store" always shows on my screen when i try to. Tried fixing by changing the dates, turning off location as suggested in some forums but both didn't work! Please help!! Thanks.
You can not merge accounts.
Apps are tied to the Apple ID used to download them, you can not transfer them. -
I have iOS 7. When I go to the itunes store on my ipod touch it gives me a blank screen with nothing on it. I restarted my ipod touch and it didn't work. Can someone help me with this?
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Go to Settings>iTunes and App stores and sign out and sign back in
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
- Restore from backup. See:
iOS: How to back up
- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device. -
Whenever I go to preview a song in itunes, the song with play out for about 10 seconds and then stop. Why isn't the song previews working? How can I fix this? I tried updating my itunes and it didn't work. I use windows 7. Thanks!
Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try another cable
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Yesterday, when I brought my laptop back from sleep, I tried to check my e-mail with the Mail app like I always do. But there was the lightning bolt sign next to the inbox, and the pop-up asked me to input my password, which didn't work. It says mail.mac.com has rejected my password. The password is correct (I'm able to check my e-mail through my browser at me.com), but for some reason Mail keeps on rejecting it. I usually don't have to input my password at all in Mail. Any clue how to fix this? I haven't changed anything at all on my laptop.
I did change my apple ID password though...

KMC didn´t work with pcd write-protect mode
Hello,
I have activated the write-protect mode for the PCD in our Portal. Everything is working fine.
After restarting the portal-server, the kmc-component didn´t work anymore. After disabling the write-protect mode and restarting the server, kmc works again.
I read a sap-note (1148777), that this problem was fixed with SPS 15 KMC-Patch 1. Our portal is on SPS 15 with latest patch-releases.
Any idea ?
Thx for your reply!
OliverThe concurrent mark sweep collector you get with -Xincgc isn't a compacting collector. It doesn't move objects. So while it can grow the heap if needed, it can't give those pages back to the operating system, as you want by turning -XX:MaxHeapFreeRatio= down that far.
