Arch with X & DE pre-installed?

Hey there,
I'm new with arch but have a year and half experience with ubuntu.
I've read the wiki & really liked The Arch Way.
Well, I would like to know if there is a version or edition or something of arch with any X & DE pre-installed on it (like gnome etc) because We are using 128 kbps DSL linx here, in IRAN, so i can't install gnome on every workstation or installation from the repo.s .
Any ideas?

Zeist wrote:http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Loc … ory_HOW-TO should be pretty interesting to you.
It is, But it doesn't fit my needs. thank you anyway
SoleSoul wrote:You can always simply download the packages once, burn them on a cd, then copy them to whatever station you have and install with pacman -U.
Anyway, if the Chakra project fits your needs go for it.
I prefer to wait for it to get Final Release, I just don't have good expriences with Alpha releases.
sHyLoCk wrote:Yeah but how is he going to keep his system updated? He needs to repeat this entire process of downloading packages and pushing them to local repo and then upgrading. Don't get me wrong here, but I think what he needs is something like Slackware which will give a stable release now and then and also he can make it as minimal and tweak as much as he wants. But if he uses Arch which has a rolling release cycle then he has to often update his system. So tuxrux, if you're ok with that, then go for it. Arch rox! You'll have a lot of fun. ;-)
I'm ok with that but not my clients they are non-geex. Just tell them to right click on the desktop & they panic!
So i think i should keep the pleasure of using Arch for myself & let them use what they're using until we have good infrastructure in IRAN for Real High Speed Linx (But i don't think it happens as long as we have IT minister that says: I'm sure 64 kbps is more than enough for every one!!!!!!!!!)
Thanks everyone for your replies,
Honestly, There are almost no communities that Reply kindly to Iranians .

  • Macbook Pro with snow leopard pre-installed

Does anyone know when the retail apple store locations will have the 13inch MBP pre-installed with snow leopard? i called up the local apple stores in my area and they still dont have these yet, maybe they need to get rid of old stock? i understand that snow leopard comes pre-installed when purchased online but i dont want to do that.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Are you sure? You realize if you ever find a software title that is not Snow Leopard compatible, but is with older versions of Mac OS X, and you buy a Mac with Snow Leopard prebundled, there likely will be no way of going back to Leopard or earlier. This has been the case with all new Macs once they come prebundled with a new operating system.
Unless you are 100% certain of Snow Leopard compatibility, I would be happy to have this reprieve.

ok edit two I think that I have Arch install but I am not sure of which way to use
Dual booting with other linux distros
This is done exactly the same way that Arch linux is loaded. Here we assume that the other distro is on partition [s/h]da3.
    title Other Linux
    root (hd0,2)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz (add other options here as required)
initrd /boot/initrd.img (if the other kernel uses/needs one)
[edit] Dual booting with other linux distro (Chainloading)
To avoid maintenance nightmare, you might want to chainload the GRUB in the MBR to another bootloader you might have installed in the bootrecord of a partition [(hd0,2) in our example] instead of the MBR. This way the auto-magic stuff of some distro will manage the menu.lst on (hd0,2) (if it is grub) for its own distro and you will boot with all the option needed (like the correct last kernel) without the need to copy/paste some part of that menu.lst into yours.
In our example [1], GRUB is in the MBR and some other bootloader (BL) (be it grub or lilo) is in the Boot Record of (hd0,2).
    |   |           |           |    %   (hd0,2)     |
    | M |           |           | B  %               |
    | B |  (hd0,0)  |  (hd0,1)  | L  %  Other        |
    | R |           |           |    %  Distro       |
    |   |           |           |    %               |
      |                            ^
      |     chainloading           |
Then, you simply use in your menu.lst:
    title Other Linux distro
    root (hd0,2)
    chainloader +1

  • When should I expect to buy Mac with Mountain Lion pre-installed?

I'll like to purchase MacBook Air 2012 but prefer Mountain Lion pre-installed. It seems I need to keep waiting even the Mountain Lion is available today.

It will probably take a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on stock, for Apple Stores to have systems with Mountain Lion installed; longer for many independent dealers. If you're ordering from the online Apple Store, it probably will be much sooner, but call them and ask.
You may find it better to have Lion preinstalled. That way you can upgrade to Mountain Lion when you're confident it's stable and that all your apps are compatible.

  • MacBook Pro came with iLife 09 pre-installed. Is it on the App Disc?

My Macbook Pro came with iLife 09 installed. I did not get a separate iLife disc. I have two discs, the Mac OS X DVD and Applications Disc (haven't confirmed if iLife is in there). Do you know off Apple includes iLife in that second disc or will I be screwed out of iLife if I decide to erase and install the Mac OS X down the road?

Welcome to the Mac world!! The answers to any questions you have are right here!
Time machine will handle everything for you. You don't have to make any decisions. It will start with a full backup and then take incremental backups from there. You can hook up an external to the extreme base station but if you have 1 machine to backup I would suggest plugging it into that machine. Network backups can be so slow, especially that first full backup.

Generally it is less pain to stick to pacman only.  Using anything else would mean pacman cannot know what packages certain files belong to, similar to what you ran into here.
Got it. Seems I have to reinstall my python packages from scratches again.
    Thanks to all the help.

It is doubtful. iLife 08 is a separate program sold separately.

If you buy it from Apple it should come with it now. If you buy from a distributer there is a chance it is not. You would qualify for the update price.

  • Imac pre-installed with Lion?

I am switching from Mr. Gate's hardware/software... However, since I will be a 'newbie'...
I do NOT want Snow Leopard on a custom ordered Imac 27... I am reading of horror' stories with users who have 'down-loaded' Lion over existing
    Snow Leopard OS.
How can I custom order a new Imac 27 ... to have Lion and only Lion ... Pre-installed?
    Thank you!

    Clipper100,
First thing to remember these forums are technical help forums so you are getting a very skewed point of view. It's kind of like visiting a hospital to get a gauge on the overall health of a population!
However if you do order a new machine online from the Apple Store it will almost certainly be shipped with Lion. If you buy a machine from a brick and mortar Apple Store you can ask that Lion be installed before you leave in the event you buy a machine that came with Snow Leopard pre-installed. I'm sure they would be happy to do this service for you.
Whenever you purchase any machine (Windows, Mac, etc..) during a transition of operating systems there is going to be a little confusion until the transition is complete. Apple makes things easier and IMHO Lion was by far the easiest installation to date. My current iMac came with Tiger and I've updated it to Leopard, Snow Leopard and now Lion. All installations were easy and flawless because I keep my system healthy. Those that tend to have problems have unhealthy systems to begin with or simply cannot follow basic instructions.
Don't worry about it buy with confidence, I'm sure your experience will be a good one.
BTW because you are new to OS X I'd recommend bookmarking and using:

  • Will all new macbook pro come with Lion pre-installed?

I will be purchasing a new MacBook Pro in the next couple of weeks. I presume it will come with OSX Lion pre-installed. I would prefer to have only Snow Leopard installed since I won't be upgrading my other Mac Pro immediately. Will it just be necessary to re-install the Snow Leopard and start from scratch?

It depends where you buy the mac also if you get a new macbook air it will most undoubtly have LION. But I would say it's safe to assume that most macbooks that have stayed on the shelves at these apple stores have not been opened and updated. So I would think that if you purchased a new mac today unless it was a macbook air it should only have Snow leopard installed on it and they should give you a code to redeem a copy of Lion.

    Can you try the following:
    1. Check this guide on how to obtain a Windows 8.1 ISO (see Option One)
    2. Follow this guide to make a bootable UEFI Win8.1 installer via DVD/USB flashdrive and use it to install Windows (the installation should be able to detect the Windows 8.1 product key in the UEFI firmware that should automatically activate Windows).
