Arch64 on Samsung NC20

hi all,
this is my first post and it is the first time that i'm using arch (decade long slackware addict here)
I was wondering whether somebody uses arch on the samsung nc20. i haven't found one single post in the forum about it, is it because no one uses it or because everything runs smoothly?
i got arch64 installed on the machine and everything is working fine, except that the screen won't come up after suspend or hibernate.
I am using openchrome because the proprietary via gfx driver doesn't work with xorg 1.6 (i would be using it anyway since i tend to prefer free software, and the via driver apparently sucks)
I'm using the latest git kernel (2.6.31-rc4-git3) for all the Via Nano goodies to work (padlock for ssl encryption, RNG, cpu frequency scaling).
Has anyone managed to get suspend/hibernate work on this machine?
Does anyone have some experiences to share?
thankyou!

I just tried the newly released official drivers on x86_64. The xorg module loads but X crashes sistematically.
I tried to disable vbe in xorg.conf because i think the issue is related to it, but still no luck.
here is Xorg.0.log

  • Arch64 on Samsung NF310 netbook?

    Hi there,
As a previous satisfied nc10 owner I just got my nf310 netbook from samsung. It comes with the atom n550 processor which supports 64 bit. And now there's my question: Should I install the 64bit version of arch? I never really thought about it deeply with my other systems, I just installed 64bit if the processor supported it, but do you think maybe I will LOOSE some performance on my netbook other than having a little bit more memory usage  in comparison to 32bit? I should probably also mention that I upgraded the internal 1gb of ram to the hardware maximum of 2gb. Amusingly my main reason to worry with 64bit linux is STILL flash. especially on netbooks
    what do you guys think?

I would.  I have had little to no issues with flash on x86_64 as of lately (other than flash sucks in general).  At this point, I see no reason not to use Arch64 on all (3) of my 64 bit systems.  Multilib comes in handy when need be, too.

  • IOS 5.0 and iPhone along with "new user account"

I do hate this hacking aspect of all software, but with iTunes especially.
Earlier I tried to remove some duplicates in the iTunes on my old computer, but time after time they popped back from the trash can, what the heck!
There was a running computer with my iTunes account and everything was fine. Later I even made a restore to new phone after previous phone got lost.
Then I had to buy new laptop to replace the old as it got broken.
As instructed, I installed iTunes onto the new computer and was able to connect my Apple Store account and purchased Apps.
Then after I copied everything in the Apple Computer - folders and iTunes in my old (same user account name) to the new computer, now running with Windows 7 (former laptop had XP).
Now my iPhone 4 (iOS 5.0) does not sync.
    Sync failed to start...
Also I wonder what is the reason not to be able to sync back from the handheld? Nokia has that and it really works. When I have new contacts and restore from backup I loose my contacts, since there is no sync file on the new computer. Why the system does not work automatically and sync back from the phone, if no source files found on the computer? The back sync coud be asked every time new phone or ipod/pad is connected.
Im starting to be absolutely fed up with this constant browsing through discussions forums and what ever hacking pages to get things running that I'm just about to throw the device into the lake next to my house. AAARGH!
Why do we even accept this? Who would buy or use a car, that had to be repaired or re-booted every 10 miles?
    Great jobs!

  • [SOLVED] cannot set keyboard for X clients

    Hi everyone,
I just set up Arch on my Samsung NC20 a few days ago after a couple of years on Ubuntu. I'm enjoying it so far, but I've run into the following problem. I've tried to set my keyboard to 'uk' but I only get a UK keyboard at login time. As soon as I launch an X client, I am back with a US keyboard. (In case it matters, I've mainly been using wmii, LilyTerm, and Firefox. I have no desktop.)
    My /etc/vconsole.conf file reads
    KEYMAP=uk
and I set up a file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/99-keyboard-locale.conf that reads as follows:
    Section "InputClass"
        Identifier                  "Keyboard Defaults"
        MatchIsKeyboard    "yes"
        Option                "XkbLayout"    "uk"
    EndSection
The option 'uk' is indeed present on my machine (although I tried 'gb' too, to no avail). When I look in /usr/share/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwerty I find uk.map.gz; and I get a UK keyboard when I log in, as I said.
One weird thing is that if I run
    setxkbmap -layout uk
from the command line in LilyTerm, I get the following:
    No protocol specified
    Cannot open display ":0"
    I don't know if that's relevant.
Can anyone help? How can I set my keyboard to 'uk' for X clients?
    Best,
    PaulE

As far as I know, there is no uk layout for xorg and keymap ≠ X keyboard layout. Always check /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/xorg.lst.
    cat /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/xorg.lst | grep UK
gb English (UK) # keyboard layout (following lines are variants)
extd gb: English (UK, extended WinKeys)
intl gb: English (UK, international with dead keys)
    dvorak gb: English (UK, Dvorak)
dvorakukp gb: English (UK, Dvorak with UK punctuation)
    mac gb: English (UK, Macintosh)
mac_intl gb: English (UK, Macintosh international)
    colemak gb: English (UK, Colemak)
Try adding setxkbmap -layout gb to your .xinitrc file and see if it solves the problem.
EDIT: Added a comment to the first line of output.

  • Arch64 sounds studio -OR- help get me out of FC3

Hey everybody,  It's been a while since I've been on the messageboards.  My computer died before I went on vacation, and on my return I decided to set up a Linux recording studio.  I decided to go with the Planet CCRMA version of FC3 so I could see what they consider to be "proper function" for their audio apps.
So I've pretty much got it, and I still hate RPMs.  I'd also like to take advantage of my 64-bitness, but since I haven't been around, I don't know how Arch 64 is going.  My rig:
    Athlon 64 3000+
    1GB dual channel DDR
    NF4-SLI motherboard
    Geforce 6600GT 128MB PCIe
100GB ATA WD HDD - OS
120GB SATA WD HDD - Music library
200GB SATA Samsung HDD - Recording
    BenQ DVD-RW
    RME HDSP9652
I'm using a Presonus DigiMAX 96k as mic preamps, with ADAT lightpipe into the HDSP9652.  I'm wondering if there are any people out there doing similar things on Arch64, and how it's going for them.  Questions:
    1. Can I usually just recompile most Arch packages and have them work, or are those the exception?
    2. Does anybody have Ardour up and running with the LADSPA plugins listed at the CCRMA site?  How about with RME hardware?
    http://ccrma.stanford.edu/planetccrma/s … world.html
    3. I see there's a wiki entry for installing Arch64, but there's also an install CD at www.arch64.org.  Should I just be able to install off the CD like I do the normal Arch CD?
If I get up and running, I'll be happy to maintain apps I use and I wouldn't mind using my computer as a compiling box for 64-bit stuff.  Apps I use (some better than others):
    Ardour
    HDSPConf
    HDSPMixer
    LADSPA
    Rezound
    JAMin
    Freqtweak
    Ceres3
    Hydrogen
Anyway, any help would be appreciated.  I wouldn't mind that much just running i686 Arch for the time being.  I'm looking forward to being back in Arch again.

I'm in Arch again.  AaaaahHH!!! Thank God.  it's like, you can f8king tell it what to do, and it DOES IT!
Oh, my.  I am flush with the glory of Ardour working without any tweaking!  FLUSH!
No 64 bit yet, but soon to come.  WEEE!

  • Using mini-DVI to VGA adapter to Samsung display

I have 2009 late model of mac mini, The text on display looks washed out, not clear or sharp at all from day one, I thought it was the old model of monitor, tried the same cable to another monitor on another computer, SAME. so I thought the problem could be the cable or adapter.
It's hard for me to believe is the signal from computer. I'm using VGA adapter made by Dynex bought from Best Buy.
    Anybody has suggestions?? Thanks

Yeah, My old Samsung is lcd synmaster 17", bought many years ago at around $1000. Crazy, crazy price looked back. It's fine when I used it on the retired old Dell. It must be the adapter, trying not to buy another VGA adapter, could not image my next lcd will use one, anyway.
This cable has only 14 pins vs 15 pins on the other cable, not sure if it matters?? Or if Safari has anything to do with it??
    Thank for you reply...

  • Using Mac Mini and a 26" Samsung Tube TV with Apple DVI to Video Adapter

So upon first hooking this adapter up from my Mac Mini to my samsung 27" tube TV, it worked fine–but everything was massive in size. I started changing resolution sizes in the preferences panel and one of them set the screen flickering vertically, like a mismatch in refresh rates.
Anybody else have this issue and resolve it successfully? It obviously works, it was for me for the first couple minutes, but I can't figure out what sent it flickering–and how to resolve it.
The TV is connected VIA composite (RCA) cable from the adapter to the video-in port.

Try starting in Safe mode. That should get your screen back.

  • Trouble connecting MacBook to a Samsung 27'' TFT

    Hi people.
I often connect my 1,83 Core Duo MacBook to a Samsung TFT display using the Mini DVI to VGA adapter and an VGA cable, in order to watch DVDs, AVIs, high definition podcasts and that kind of stuff on a bigger screen.
The MacBook and the Samsung seem to like each other, as they instantly start to work together. But there's a little issue I just can't imagine how to work out.
The resolution of the external TFT display is 1280 x 768 and the Mac gives me the option to select it at different refresh rates. And here comes the problem:
When I select 1280 x 768 at 60 Hz, the image looks clean and crisp, but it appears displaced to the left. I mean, I loose part of the desktop on the left, and I see a narrow black column at the right of the external screen.
At 85 Hz the desktop fits the screen perfectly, but the image is a little blurry. I can work that way, but I don't like losing the crispness, and when I watch video I can actually see the frames refreshing.
At 75 Hz I have both problems, and higher refresh rates are not supported by the Samsung TFT.
Any clue about how can I work it out?
    Thanks!

Here are some details of an exact timing to try that I have used successfully on a 1280 x 768 Samsung TV. Maybe they will work for your TV.
    Pixel clock: 80.13 MHz
    H Active: 1280 pixels
    H Front porch: 64 pixels
    H Sync width: 136 pixels
    H Back porch: 200 pixels
    V Active: 768 lines
    V Front porch: 1 line
    V Sync width: 3 lines
    V Back porch: 23 lines
    H Sync is positive
V Sync is negative (no check mark in box)
Interlace is off (no check mark in box)

Before I could respond to this forum I was asked to sign in.  I was going to post something fairly snarky.  Then I was asked to create a Skype Name different than my hotmail account.  So I created one.  Hopefully this will answer MY question and that is why, on my Samsung TV app does it not offer the hotmail login or sign in name.  Now maybe I can use the one Skype Name I just created???

  • Arch64 RAM issues [Solved]

So I thought everything was fine until an application told me I had 4gb of RAM which is a far cry from the installed 16gb.
I did plenty of digging around and narrowed it down to a couple possibilities, but first my investigation:
    I started with free:
    [vuvffufg@HereAndNow-Main ~]$ free
total used free shared buff/cache available
    Mem: 4015688 858084 115144 24832 3042460 2860360
    Swap: 16777212 22460 16754752
As you can see it shows their is 4gb of RAM much as the application did.
You can see I have 16gb of swap; I am aware and am not confusing swap with RAM, I damn well have 4x4gb sticks according to the memtest86+ option on boot.
So then I thought hardware and tried dmidecode --type memory:
[vuvffufg@HereAndNow-Main ~]$ sudo dmidecode --type memory
    [sudo] password for vuvffufg:
    # dmidecode 2.12

Found it quite strange that the OS can obviously see the memory it just isn't being allocated, also what is with the slow clock speeds?
I found a similar output with lshw.
So I moved on to checking how it is actually initialized in dmesg, and honestly a lot of what was output I don't quite understand, I noticed that some memory was being reserved by the RAM map given by BIOs yet have no obvious way of disabling the BIOs RAM scheduler.

I figure there is plenty of unnecessary info in the dmesg and I apologize, but I want to find the problem of this illusive RAM.
    My system specs:
    AMD FX-8350
    4x4gb CMZ8GX3M2A160 Corsair RAM
    Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3
    NVidia GT 640
Please can someone guide me to the answer of the missing RAM?

  • Back up contacts from Samsung Reality to Droid 2X

I went on backup assistant and kept getting Flash errors. I have a Samsung Reality and I am upgrading to a Droid 2x in the next day or so. I wanted to back up my contacts but the FAQ on that subject don't seem to apply to me or the SR - (downloading the BA software). I went through all the steps but when it came to download or purchase the app, the Flash allow dialog pop up froze. Tried it three times.
I have a good data plan with the SR - so can I back up contacts or will I have to manually re-enter in the Droid?

    Nevermind! I figured it out!

  • I've only had my iphone 5s for a week. I keep getting an error message of "Server has stopped responding."  I need the server to work. Does anyone know if there is a "fix" for the problem? Other wise, I probably best return for a refund and get a Samsung.

Unlikely.  Based on the complete lack of detail of the issue provided it is entirely possible the same issue would occur.
Unless and until the user provides some actual details of the problem, there is nothing the indicate that the issue is with the iPhone.

  • Snow Leopard Samsung ML-1630 Crashes entire system - what's wrong?

The printer will print, but the entire system crashes and the Mac Mini reboots each time a print job is sent. The forum points out a lot of problems with printers and the Snow Leopard upgrade, but no real help seems to have been offered.
I did download the new Samsung drivers recommended for snow leopard using the Apple link
I have removed and reinstalled the printer, several times
What's wrong? Did Apple test this before they launched the new software?
I bought the printer from an Apple store, I hope they support it still.

I agree with William on this. I use the same printer with just native OSx support.
There is one possible issue. The power that the printer draws when printing is pretty significant. My UPS (AVR) kicks in every time I print there. I do have many devices on this circuit though.
It is possible that your voltage is being pulled so low that your machine is rebooting.
If possible try the printer on a different circuit or turn off as much as possible equipment on the same circuit and give it a try.

  • How Do I Transmit Audio from My 2008 MacBook Pro to My 2011 Samsung HDTV?

    Hello,
I'm trying to transmit audio from my 2008 late model MacBook Pro to my 2011 Samsung HDTV.  My MacBook's Model Identifier is MacBook Pro 4,1 (ancient, I know).  I purchased this DVI to HDMI cable which does a beautiful job of transmitting the video to my HDTV, but no audio (as advertised): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000E8SY5Q/ref=oh_o02_s01_i00_details   HELP!!
    Thanks very much.

I figured it out!  I plugged in my 3.5MM auxillary cable I use to plug my iPhone into car stereo jacks from the headphones port on my MPB to the "PC/DVI Audio In" on the back of my Samsung HDTV and voila! It worked! No additional cables (other than these two). No upgrading OS.  Yay!
    Here's the auxillary cable:  http://www.amazon.com/AUDIO-3-5MM-JACK-AUXILIARY-CABLE/dp/B002Q3K0QS/ref=sr_1_1? ie=UTF8&qid=1330576344&sr=8-1
This looks like a great workaround to the MPB to HDTV audio problem!  Hopefully my geek status is still intact.  W00T!
When in doubt, try all the cables you have in all the different ports.  AV hasn't changed much over the years and you can often rig things to work with what you already have.  Yay for keeping cables out of landfills and repurposing!
