Archck kernel vesafb/vesafb-tng issue
http://iphitus.loudas.com/archck.php
According to this, the archck patchset uses vesafb-tng.
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gensplash
According to this page,
#2. Even if you are running 32bit x86 I DO NOT recommend vesafb-tng over vesafb, it is slow and requires different configs to vesafb, switching framebuffer types between kernels will cause you grief. If you have previously used vesafb keep using it!
What lead to the decision to use vesafb-tng? What makes the two different?
Second question relates to a gensplash. I have kernel26archck 2.6.13.archck1-1, gensplash from community, as well as the initscripts from community for silent boot. When I try to use vesafb-tng to boot with the splash, it just reverts to the default console...but when I use the vesafb config, it works fine...is there something im missing here.
Just to clarify: I am using kernel26archck that to my knowledge uses vesafb-tng.
grub configs:
This does NOT work. This uses the vesafb-tng format.
# Arch Linux kernel26archck using vesafb-tng
title Arch Linux with Splash (Verbose) vesafb-tng
root (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/vmlinuz26archck root=/dev/hda3 ro video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr,1024x768-32@85 splash=verbose,theme:darch console=tty1
initrd (hd0,0)/fbsplash-darch-1024
This does work. This uses the vesafb format.
# Arch Linux kernel26archck using vesafb
title Arch Linux with Splash (Verbose) (Community Kernel)
root (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/vmlinuz26archck root=/dev/hda3 ro devfs=nomount vga=0x318 splash=verbose,theme:darch console=tty1
initrd (hd0,0)/fbsplash-darch-1024
Just to clarify one last time: I am using kernel26archck which uses vesafb-tng but when I configure grub to boot with vesafb-tng...it doesn't work in the sense that the framebuffer reverts to the default. However when I configure grub to boot with the vesafb config...it works fine.
WHAT THE HELL?!?!
Edit:
And according to vesa-tng's page: http://dev.gentoo.org/~spock/projects/vesafb-tng/ ,what is happening to me...should NOT be happening.
NOTE: After patching the kernel, setting mode via the old vga= way WILL NOT WORK. You'll have to specify the mode you want to set through the video option, for example: video=vesafb:ypan,1024x768-32@85.
It's quite simple - the archck patchset contains the vesa-tng patch but the pkg in [community] does not use the vesa-tng driver the patch enables. This is because I wrote the gensplash wiki and I don't rate vesa-tng at all
So, yeah, you have confused what is available and what is actually include. Simple
Glad I read this thread now...

Kernel 7.01 upgrade issue.
I'm installing EHP1 in our solution manager and I'm having a very weird problem while upgrading the kernel.
Our system is running on Windows 2003 32 bit and I have tried 3 kernels already and none of them seems to work.
basically the issue seems to be that the commands are not recognizable... for example if I run R3trans -d i get "The system cannot execute the specified program" in the event viewer i can see,
"Generate Activation Context failed for E:\usr\sap\<sid>\SYS\exe\uc\NTI386_701\R3trans.exe. Reference error message: The referenced assembly is not installed on your system."
Same happends with most executables...
The problem does not exits with 700 kernels.
Theres no issues with permission and I'm 100% sure I'm downloading the right kernel.... I wonder whats wrong?
Maybe I'm missing an OS SP or something....
Regards
JuanKernel 7.01 is created with a newer compiler than the older kernels. You need to install the appropriate runtime DLLs to make them work.
Read Note 684106 - Microsoft runtime DLLs
<...>
For SAP Releases 4.6D EX2, Web AS 6.40 EX2, SAP NetWeaver 7.01 and 7.10 and higher, download the installation program vcredist_<platform>.exe (C runtime 8.0; this is contained in Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributables) from the Microsoft download page. Then execute the program. The vcredist_<platform> installation packages are also delivered with the installation master DVDs of SAP Releases 7.01 and 7.10 and are located in the NTPATCH directory.

Suspend2 and the new archck kernel (2.6.15) with initrd
Hi everybody,
Afret upgrade from archck 2.6.13 to 2.6.15 my system does not resume any longer. I think that I should follow the instruction at the http://suspend2.epfl.ch/HOWTO-2.html which says:
Initrd/Initramfs's with Suspend2
Using an initrd with Suspend2 is possible. To use this, you MUST edit your linuxrc (or init) script to contain the line
echo > /proc/suspend2/do_resume
BEFORE the script mounts your filesystem. If the line is missing, your system will not resume. If the line comes after mounting file systems, you will most likely suffer from filesystem corruption. You have been warned.
You can now recompile your kernel with Suspend2...
What file should I edit, I did not find any linuxrc file?
Thanks in advance,
mdvThis is the full dmesg output.

i tried the one in the repositories, as well as compiling it with ABS (and optimizing for K7 and turning SMP off).
the kernel loads, and messages start spewing on the screen as usual, and it freezes on the following line.

and my computer freezes there. i need to do a hard reboot to get control back.

A dozen+ Kernel Panics, suspect system issues - what to try?
Hello!
Well, in the last few weeks, my poor little Powerbook has lost its mind. I keep having Kernel panics for no apparent reason. Here's the story so far:
1. I upgraded to Leopard (archive/install) from Tiger, in November.
2. In early January, I had at least one kernel panic. Not sure what happened. By the middle of January, I had 3 or 4, and on (about) the 15th, I had three kernel panics in the span of an hour - and the lower ram card wasn't being recognized. I took it to the Apple store, where the tech said that it was the infamous "lower ram-slot issue" that plague my model Powerbook.
3. Once I got the powerbook back from the shop, it seemed to work quite well - fast, stable, panic-free. This week, however, I've had at least 6 or 7 kernel panics - at least 4 of them in the last 24 hours. A few of these weren't the usual "you need to restart your mac" window, but rather a long list of console-like text from the BSD subsystem itself
It seems to be related to the software - or perhaps Dashboard. Dashboard client has been running out of control this week - and started to go nuts about when the kernel panics started to occur. In fact, one of these "BSD" panics said that the dashboard client hung the computer. Thus, I moved all of my user (non-apple) widgets out of the library folder - effectively removing them from dashboard. This has prevented dashboard client from going nuts, but hasn't stopped the kenel panics. The ones that have occurred since seem to occur when using Safari or MS Word 2004, and one (another BSD panic) said that Window Server hung.
I've repaired permissions many times, used Disk Utility to verify the boot volume (it was OK), and zapped the PRAM and PMU - no luck.
I've had some other hardware and software issues:
First, Spotlight crashes when I attempt to search for something with a common name and have my 4 external hard drives attached... (One with Time Machine backups, one with other backups, and the rest with large volumes of video editing files). This issue probably isn't related to the kernel panic issue though, since it only occurs if I spotlight gets really bogged down - say, I search on "mac" and get 5000 returns...
Sometimes, if I have the power adapter plugged in and then boot up or wake the Mac, it sometimes won't recognize the adapter and thus run off battery. The solution? Unplug the adapter from the Mac and the wall, then plug both sides in. This occurs at least once a day, having become a much worse issue since sending it into Apple. This makes me think that I may have a issue with the power supply system in the Powerbook, and may be one of the causes of the panics. Again, zapping the PMU and PRAM, hasn't helped. Nor has deleting every power-related plist file.
The ram issue seems to have stopped, and I'm not sure the power issue could cause this - so I don't know what to do about this. It's happening a lot, but it's not exactly predictable - it would be difficult to reproduce for the Mac Genius, should I run to the Apple store. Since I suspect it's a software issue, I'm also not sure they can do anything about it. If Apple can't do anything about it, I plan on doing an Erase-install of Leopard, then carefully installing software - one thing at a time - to see if I can find the culprit. If worst comes to worst, I'll downgrade to Tiger...
So then, the questions, summed up are:
1. Do you have any idea what could be going on?
2. Can apple do anything about a software-related kernel panic issue?
3. If Apple can't fix it, and an erase-install won't work, when else can I try?
Sorry for the long post, and thanks a bunch for the help, I appreciate it.
-DanK, well i'll try to find the log on the backup clone I made - the Powerbook is currently in the Apple store for diagnostics. Hopefully, then can figure out what the deal is, but it will likely require an archive/install.
When I was there, he opened one of the logs in console - and it showed literally thousands of errors - all from "kernel". Wow, i have no idea what happened. He said that it may be bit-rot on the part of some of my applications, but there's probably not much they can do if it's not a hardware problem. sigh
Anyway, I'll look for the log on the backup volume when I get a chance. Thanks, I suppose you're right about you being forced to guess without the log. Didn't think about that... O:-) -
PowerMac G4 1.42 Dual - Kernel Panics and other issues
Hi,
I have a PowerMac G4 1.42ghz that has a number of problems.
Firstly, it kernel panics somewhat frequently. Not consistently on one app, but completely randomly. For example, I came home one day to find that it had woken from sleep and had a kernel panic message over my screensaver. It mostly kernel panics while using it though.
It also does something weird where it logs itself out randomly. The screen goes blue and returns me to the login window. Sometimes I can log back in, other times not. This happens on both network and local accounts.
I also noticed that in System Profiler that my L3 cache is failed. but I figure it should be able to operate without it.
Oh, and 2 of my RAM slots cause the computer to boot with Open Firmware errors.
Things I've tried:
Reset PRAM/PMU. No change.
Installed 10.5 on another hard drive. No change.
Swapped out videocard for a PCI one. No change.
Swapped out RAM with known good RAM. No change.
Installed 10.4. Haven't had the logout issue, but have had apps crash and kernel panics.
I'm pretty sure my problems are either motherboard or CPU related. I just want to know which one to try replacing first. The only external devices I have connected are my Aluminum keyboard and mighty mouse. I occasionally plug in my iPod touch.
Here's three kernel panics.

Is it possible that kadmind is causing this issue because it is being sandboxed?
Can anyone suggest/decipher? Is this familiar to anyone?
The hardware seems to be fine with no other issues, changes in last month.
Feels like launchd is crashing on something but not clear what. I'm a little lost on how to proceed.
Cheers. That panic was not caused by third-party software. If it's recurrent, the possibilities are (1) a damaged OS X installation; (2) a hardware fault, which could be internal or in a wired peripheral device; and (3) an obscure bug in OS X.
You can rule out the first possibility by reinstalling the OS. Probably there will be no change. In that case, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or unless it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at leasttwo independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed. -
GTX Nvidia Kernel crash, possible heat issue ?
I had a crash tonight while working on the timeline of Adobe Premiere CS6. I am on a MacPro 3.1 with a GTX 470 (from macvidcards) under 10.8.4 and its proper drivers. I was doing extensive scrubbing and I could hear the GTX's fan spinning louder than usual. I thought these kernel crashes would dissapear with the latest nvidia drivers, in fact I haven't got a crash for over months until tonight where I was pushing the limit.
Then I opened GPUtest and did a stress test which crashed the screen and locked the system after only 3 minutes of heavy load and fan noise. Flickering dots and rectangles and color hue change. Forced restart.
I went on to purchase an Artic Cooling Acceleto Twin Turbo II graphics card cooler.
I am reasoning that this is a heat issue. Has anyone experienced similar, I still suspect the drivers but after the EVGA Mac Edition I don't know if it is fair to say so for Nvidia. Thanks nbar, with pleasure..
This is what I pulled from the console:

I've installed arch linux, then system upgrade + installation of archck. Reboot, and then kernel panic I've only configurated the system for the old kernel and added new lines in /boot/grub/menu.lst for the new kernel, nothing else.
No idea what to do now. How co configurate it?FUBAR wrote:Can you still boot the old kernel?
No, becouse of udev. The old kernel is from the 0.7 install cd.
Now I know what I've missed.
Arch Wiki wrote:
mkinitramfs' configuration options are stored in /etc/mkinitramfs.conf, some of which are listed above.
To build an initramfs run:
mkinitramfs kernel=2.6.16-beyond
I should do the same with archck? Am I right? Ok, but how to create it without booting arch? I can use live-cd. Mounting the disc and building initramfs for archck on live-cd will be ok? -
Kernel panic and other issues. (Also posted elswhere.)
Hi, I have problems with my brother in law's PB G4.
First: when starting up usually a kernel panic screen appears (grey/black screen with a bunch of jibberish, most times restarting takes care of that. It will then boot up completely. This brings up the second problem: After finally being booted any program that he tries to run "unexpectedly quits-would you like to submit a report?" This happens with all programs from Safari to Media Player to Quicktime to GarageBand...etc. He is running 10.3.9 but I am unsure of any other specs since I can't get to the system info. and he doesn't recall them. A third problem is that the Finder is in the dock but will not open when clicked on (would probably quit as well) so can't get at anything that way either.
Does this sound like a ram issue or motherboard or anything else to anyone?
Thank you for any and all help.Hello, Gmakc4,
i just posted this here in another thread, it might be useful in your case, too (except the battery issue):
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=771979&tstart=0
then, in addition:
it could be bad memory even if the hardwarecheck doesn't spot it; it could be a bad section on the HD.
what i would do:
1st: try to back up if that is not yet done.
2. can you start in "single user mode"? can you start from the Install-CD?
if not, then:
3. try a reinstall of the software; you can try an "Archive and Install", which leaves everything else, and just replaces the system, or you can try the "Erase and Install" which cleans up the disk.
hope this helps; please report back.
and -- i wouldn't give up too fast, a new powerbook is still about 1200 Euros...

about a week ago I got my first ever kernel panic . This coincided with the mac completely running out of battery due to being on a holiday. Sometimes I can get on without an issue for a while until it shuts down and either tells me there is a kernel panic or it does the three beep black screen. From what I have researched its a ram issue. from memory I have 2x2gb rams installed but it may be 4gb I'm not 100% sure and I cant get on to check. I'm pretty sure its not a software issue as I have booted up on several occasions and deleted things such as Sophos. I'm out of warranty so its up to me to get this show back on the road. My questions:
If I can startup the computer and have it running for a while before it dies and says is a kernel panic, is it unlikely its a software related issue?
Is there any possible way of testing for dodgy rams without physically removing one at a time and seeing what happens?
Is there anything else it could be?
Can rams cause kernel panics, if so do the panic reports reflect this?
cheersTry to get your MBP functioning. Perform SMC and PRAM resets:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
Try a Safe Boot:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
Kernel Panics can be caused by hardware or software issues. When they occur, log it and post it for review:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2546
RAM can be checked by downloading and running REMBER fro Kelley Computing:
http://www.kelleycomputing.net/rember/
In order to get sufficient loops, run it overnight.
Running a MBP till the battery is exhausted is a very bad practice.

Good morning,
For over a month now, I have been having intermittent problems with my MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard). If often has kernel panic attacks, when the multilingual message "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." This sometimes happens randomly after I have been using the computer for several hours without problems, and sometimes it enters a phase when it keeps reappearing upon startup and it takes many tries before it can fully start up again. Also, sometimes the computer seemingly randomly restarts without any prompting or any sign.
I have also had a few other problems, which I suspect are related. Often as I am using Google Chrome, the "Aw, Snap!" page appears. Sometimes this is followed by the kernel panic. Sometimes I also have this problem where the application bar at the bottom disappears or other funky stuff is going on with the interface.
Finally, sometimes the disk drive does not work -- I would be trying to boot it up from the install DVD right now but some days it won't accept any cds at all.
Is this most likely a hardware problem? Should I just give up on trying to fix it myself and take it to the apple store?
I would greatly appreciate any help! Here's the log for a panic report I just had. Anyone have any ideas?

Kernell security check failure issue
Hi.
I installed a webcam with mic integrated (external device) to my lenovo T61 computer, running 8.1 windows. When trying to use the webcam, the kernel security check failure appears, crashes my computer and restarts it. What can I do?
ThanksHi,
Any update here?
For the error message about KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE, here is an MSDN article for reference:
Bug Check 0x139 KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE
This bug check indicates that the kernel has detected the corruption of a critical data structure.
For information about how to recover from this error, see
Resolving Blue Screen errors in Windows.
As ZigZag and Brandon Records mentioned, we need the dump file to offer a better suggestion.
Some more reference:
Use OneDrive (SkyDrive) to
upload collected files and post screen shot/picture. (Updated: 1/16/2012)
How to read the small memory dump file that is created by Windows if a crash occurs
Best regards

Message was edited by: bk1992The solution I found, was right click the option in the AEBS Airport Utility to change the unit to broadcast in G only. The AEBS was set to broadcast in G/N, etc., but the laptop could only receive G and below speeds. No kernel panics after using the right click method in that setting to show "other" possibilities than the defaults listed.

Need install disk based on newer kernel to resolve network issues
Hi
It seams the kernel version supplied on the installation disk doesn't work with my network card. (See separate thread.) However, it seams that this network card should be supported in newer kernel versions.
How do I a) update the kernel when I have no network on the machine? or b) get an installation disk which has a newer kernel?a) download kernel26 and kernel26-firmware packages with another computer, copy over via usb, install them with pacman
