Architectural Rendering - HELP!

Can someone please direct me to a source of info for rendering Autocad drawings? I have years of Autocad exp. but only 16 hours of AI coursework.
My Boss expects architectural renderings now(!) and I need the basic info to get going. Nothing at learning center covered setting up a building to be rendered. I can figure out the rest (hopefully) once I have something on screen to draw.
Any info is greatly appreciated!!!

What is the elevation you already have, if not a side elevation? Are you just saying it's a front elevation?

I assume you want a 2D converging perspective (vanishing point perspective), not a parallel perspective (axonometric), not a true conic perspective generated by 3D construction.

Illustrator is a 2D vector drawing program that uses Bezier curves to define its paths. It has a very limited 3D tool (3D Effect) that is mostly intended for simple extrusion and lathing of standalone objects, like "superman" headlines, the occasional blocky graphic object, etc., not for multi-object constructions in the same 3D space.
For example, AI's 3D Effect can't even take two extruded objects in the same coordinate system and rotate one of them 90 degrees relative to the other. In fact, 3D Effect can't even apply a different extrusion depth to one of the objects in the same orientation. Very very lame for any serious 3D construction. Mere kid stuff comared to any decent 3D modeller.
3D Effect
can be put to use in constructing axonometric models, because axonometric effectively puts the "vanishing point" at infinity; so the individual objects can effectively share the same "vanishing point" despite 3D Effect's inability to actually do that in the same 3D space. So you can build an elaborate assembly as individual pieces and just deal with the z-stacking order manually.
But "arcitectural rendering" usually means an "artists conception" in some kind of vanishing point perspective.
Other than its 3D Effect feature, then, AI is stricly a 2D drawing program. As such, you can
construct a traditional 2D vanishing point perspective, just as you would have on-the-board before CAD software was commonplace. But Illustrator doesn't even have any significant dedicated feature to facilitate proper 2D perspective construction. (Adobe FreeHand does.)
You
could "cleverly" use 3D Effect to help facilitate that construction. For example, in the case of a house, you could draw the walls of floorplan as closed paths, extrude the whole floorplan vertically to form the walls, and even give that resulting object a converging perspective. But you could not then extrude the roofline in the perpendicular direction in the same overall coordinate system. So you'd have to tediously "eyeball" that.
But you could use a few such 3D Effect objects as a "starting sketch" to then set up your perspective scheme by effectively tracing the 3D blocks, and then fleshing out the rendering by drawing 2D.
Probably not the kind of quick turn-around your boss is looking for.

The chronic problem with importing CAD drawings into Bezier programs like Illustrator is the nature of most common CAD program export formats. AI can import 2D DXF. But the
export of the 2D DXF from the CAD program usually converts everything to plotter-language-like pen-up, pen-down straight line segments that are
visually connected, but
actually a kazillion individual disconnected paths. Some CAD programs have improved this situation over the years. Depends upon your version of AutoCad. You may be able to flatten your 3D model to a 2D view and then export as EPS, which might result in more properly useful Bezier curves. (I'm not up on all the AutoCAD version specifics; where I work, Engineering uses CATIA.)
Someone will jump in in a minute and sing the praises of the kid stuff "LivePaint" feature, which essentially can serve as a flood-fill tool to create closed paths within the visually-closed regions of your disjointed imported DXF linework. But from a practical, business-expedient workflow standpoint, you're still going to have alot of hand-drawing and cleanup to do.
So bottom line points:
* You're barking up the wrong tree with Illustrator if your boss is expecting a quick rendering solution for 3D models you have constructed a CAD modeller.
* If you do insist on using Illustrator for this, you would be much better off if you can generate a 3D model perspective in the CAD program, flatten it to a 2D perspective view, and then import that 2D drawing into AI for "colorization" and adding other aesthetic elements.
* Other mainsteram 2D programs in Illustrator's category are better at this. Corel Designer, for example, expressly embraces technical drawing (AI often actually seems downright contrary to it), and can do the 2D flattening of major CAD file formats on import. I suspect you would be vastly more ahead-of-the-game if you used Designer instead of Illustrator.
* If your goal is to have most of the actual rendering generated for you, you would be still better off using a 3D modeling program that can import your 3D model
as a 3D model, and that has its own rendering engine(s), and that lets you then flesh out the model with trees, landscape, sky, etc.

Sorry if this is disappointing, but that's where Illustrator is at. AI is arguably more a
graphic design program than (even a 2D)
illustration program. It has precious few features dedicated to facilitate (even traditional 2D) perspective construction.
That's certainly not to say you can't use AI for architectural renderings. Many AI users do. But it's mostly a process of drawing a new piece of 2D artwork from scratch, with the imported CAD elevations serving as mostly proportional guides. Overall, it's the electronic equivalent of drawing a 2D rendering on a drafting board with a T-square and triangles. The end result is stylistically 2D (nothing wrong with that). But it's not the kind of quick-turnaround, automated, CAD-model-to-shaded-rendering process it sounds like your boss is anticipating. And doing it will involve a significant learning curve for you, embracing all the object-specific path drawing, coloring, and manipulation tools in the program.

  • So slow performance I can see bad code architecture!  Help!

    I've been a Mac user since 2002, I've resisted the dark side until then.   And I've never had the kinds of problems I am having for the past year and I can't figure it out at all.  I would really like to reinstall Mac OS X 10.7, but I have never used Timemachine to restore data and I'm not sure how the entire process works.  Can someone tell me or give me a relevant link for how to reinstall the entire OS cleanly, without keeping anything, and then to repopulate my home directory with the data from the most recent Timemachine backup.  Note that my backup sits on an external USB drive, which is partitioned so that the first 500GB is used by the Timemachine and the rest (about 1TB) is storage space I keep files on (which are obviously not backed up!).  So I'd need to restore from the first partition of the external drive.  I am really worried that I'll have to hunt down and reinstall all the other apps I have on the system, some of which may not be avilable for download any more perhaps?  Or maybe I'd lose some settings and preferences I like?  Does the Timemachine backup that type of stuff, too, along with the home folder?  I don't know..   I have relied on maybe 1-2 unix tools, too, but I think they are in my home directory, though I'm not sure! 
    The real solution is that I'd just like to speed things up a bit, and not have to go through the reinstall process.  It is a dual core 2ghz machine with 2GB ram.  It's a 13" Macbook mid-2006, so kinda old.  But it used to run flawlessly up unti labout a year ago!  I've run disk utility from Restore mode and it found no errors and there were no permissions to be fixed either.  Here is the break down of the symptoms this machine is suffering with.
    It takes 10 seconds for the hidden dock to appear when I move the mouse to the left edge of the screen, sometimes the beachball appears first.  The CPU monitor does not rise above 15% ever!
    Activating Expose by moving the mouse to the bottom left corner takes roughly 7 seconds or longer.  Beachball never appars, CPU never above 20% either!
    Double click on a desktop folder can take up to 10 seconds to highlight in blue the icon, and then a further 20-30 seconds to actually open the folder.  Sometimes beachball appears twice or three times, the CPU isn't above 15% ever either.
    Creating a new folder reveals a huge flaw in Apple's OS architecture due to the extreme latency of the system.  I can see the folder icon appear first, then a few seconds later the text to the right appears and it says "Untitled Folder", and then the text gets highlighted.  So they're wasting CPU time by showing it once and then highlighting it.  Then I type the new name and I press enter.  Instead of the new name appearing, I can see a further stupidity in design by Apple, because it reverts to "Untitled Folder" for about 5-10 seconds, and then the text is replaced with what I had typed.
    In iPhoto if I select Export and the dialog box is supposed to appear, it doesn't happen the first time I select Export, ever!  I always have to do it twice or three times, and then the dialog box appears.
    In TextEdit, when I select Save for an untitled document, the dialog box appears, but the "File Type" combo box is wrongly placed.  Half of it is on the modal dialog, and the other half is on the desktop.  If I resize the window, the jaggedly placed selection box remains attached at it's mid-point to the right edge of the dialog box, so always half of it is on the desktop!  This happens about 50% of the time.
    If I click on the TimeMachine menu icon (little circular arrow) I get the beachball and then after 15-20 seconds the menu appears!  If I click due to lack of patience many times, the clicks get queued up and then after 20 seconds they all get executed in rapid succession, so the menu opens and closes 3-4 times in a row! 
    The above happens for any menu bar icon, including WIFI, etc...
    Timemachine's "Preparing to backup" can take 10 minutes.  The actual backup takes about 15 minutes, even though it's only backing up 100MB.  And it's always backing up 100MB, every freaking hour (how stupid of Apple not to provide a human-friendly way to control the frequency!).  So for 30 minutes of every hour, Timemachine is backing up.
    I keep my iTunes library on my external drive on the storage partition.  When I'm playing music, all works fine.  When I stop playing music, the external driev spins down.  That's how it should be, to extend it's life.  But OS X insists on waking up the drive every 15 minutes or so even when no application is using it's data.  Unfortunately OS X is so terribly designed, that whenever an exteranl drive is being woken up the entire graphical interface completely and totally locks up for about 5-6 seconds.  Streaming music may continue to play, but nothing else reacts to user input.  Text typing freezes, mouse clicks don't work, things cannot be dragged, cannot switch apps, etc.  There are a ton of people affected by this problem all posting on various forums, so reformatting and reinstalling won't fix this... It's another Apple criplpling effect!  It's been present for at least 2 major versions now! 
    If I am typing an email in Chrome on gmail.com, occasionally the browser tab freezes and refuses to let me type anything for 10 seconds, and when this happens, iTunes starts chopping out for a second or two several times duirng the 10 codn period, as if it can't handle the load.  However CPU stays below 15% during this whole time, too!
    50% of the time when I wake the system from sleep it does not connect to WIFI.  I have to click on the menubar and select my network and then it connects.  My router is not flaky, my other computers do not have this problem, ever!  I have every OS imaginable, too
    Despite all these problems, I have no problems running music apps such as Reason or Garageband, with one caveat.  Garageband struggles to playback songs I've composed on a 17" Powerbook G4!!!!  They have maybe 20 tracks of instruments/audio files, and that ancient CPU could play them without stopping.  This duo core 2GHZ with 2GB of ram periodically reports an overload and stops playback.  The CPU does not even reach 70% during this problematic portion.  Reason never complains, it's always below 10% no matter what I'm doing, and never gives me any problems whatsoever.
    Launching any application takes a full minute, or longer.  Chrome takes 2 full minutes to stop bouncing!  Apple's Mail app takes a minute or a bit longer!
    A basic Google search (typing text into Chrome's bar and pressing enter) takes 25-45 seconds to return results, despite the fact that I can download and acecss streaming and other content instantly from Netflix and other places without any delays!! 
    ***?!?!?!?    Is this a virus or something?!?!?!?  I only install software I buy from the App Store or at a store (beleive it or not there still are boxed softwares, those are super expensive though, hehe!)
    HELP!! 
    p.s. the third option I am thinking of is creating another user account and moving everything over.  But I don't know how to do that safely.  For example, I think iTunes doesn't properly store it's data, and even though I've told it to keep the library on the external drive, the "library" files (XML or wahtever) are kept on the local disk in the home directory?  I don't know, cuz I have two sets of those files, one in my user's directory and one in the iTunes folder on the external drive..

    You are surprised that Mac OS X 10.7 is running on hardware that Apple officially supports and says it will run on?  I find your logic unbelievably falwed.
    Not a single problem I've mentioned would be caused by "slow" CPU or "little" RAM.  How does iPhoto not bringing up the file dialog box have anything even remotely to do with the speed of the CPU or the quantity of RAM?  If what you say is true, then yes, performance would be bad, but it wouldn't be selectively bad.  I stated that apps such as Reason 5 run perfectly fine, even really well.  I can load 30-50 racks and synths and not even reach 50% of CPU utilization, Reason never freezes, etc.  DVD playback never freezes as well!!  Your logic is horrendously flawed, it seems you don't know much about computer architecture   Thus, unfortunately, your reply was of absolutely no help, sorry.
    p.s. the external disk spin up problem freezing up the entire graphical interface also has nothing to do with either my CPU/RAM or the OS version I'm running.  It is a known crippleware factor of Mac OS X that at least a thousand people are complaining about online and Apple has done nothing about!

    Here is my Scenario, in my datagrid the second column of the first row (987.93) background color depends upon some condtion. The remaning rows of column B depends upon the column C . If "the column C is OK" it will be green , "NOT OK" red. But the first row's second column color depends upon some other condition. How can i achieve this ?

  • SharePoint 2013 Architecture Concepts Help

    I'm mainly a SharePoint 2010 administrator.  Recently I've taken on a role that requires many SharePoint hats including figuring out to architect our SharePoint 2013 environment.  I'm the only one here that knows anything about SharePoint that
    is dedicated to this project - and while I'd like to think I know a lot, I'm not an architect.  I've been researching and researching, and I have a few questions:
    - SAN? (or DAS or NAS) Is it necessary? How does this relate to the storing of databases in SQL?
    - We are going to have about 25,000 users total, 7,000 concurrent, moderate use of search, and 11 department site collections (needs to be 3 content databases to segregate data for 2 departments).  Should I follow diagrams for a medium or large farm?
    - I'm looking at the diagrams for a virtualized environment and they have more WFEs than the non-virtualized, why is this? Is there a reason why they have two servers on one host?
    - It says 500 GB for index storage, is this per database or total?  I'm used to auto-generating content databases as you configure, I've never created the database first then assigned it to the service.  Do all the search functions go into this
    single 500GB databse?

    Depending on your needs for High Availability, some approaches require that the SQL Servers are connected to the same SAN/NAS via Fiber Channels. The idea is that your database files live on the SAN/NAS and can be served by more than one SQL Server. Therefore,

    There are a lot of factors that play into deciding the topology that would best fit your use-case. Things to take into consideration include types of activities (publishing/reading or highly collaborative), response time requirements, availability requirements,
    patterns of usage (spikes and distribution). The good news is that you can convert a Medium topology into a Large topology with additional hardware when needed.
    They have two servers on a single host for redundancy in the case that 1 of the VMs goes down. With virtualization there are little arguments against taking advantage of this with very minimal trade-off in performance.
    The Search index lives on the file system and the size will highly depend on what type of content you are crawling. (Example, a Word file has a lot more data to index than a JPEG image with only the metadata). The 500GB starting point is for the farm.

    Hi,
    I am trying to create a simple resource renderer. I downloaded the project SimpleResourceRendererWithReadymades from sdn. Can anybody explain what each method in that resource renderer example does?(for ex. renderMetaProperty, render). Is there any documents describing them. I have already searched the APIs and found nothing.
    Is there any other document other than the how to guide available for doing this? Please help.

  • Rendering help please...??

    Hi All,
    I have a 72min sequence which takes approx. 3 days to render to a self contained QT file. I noticed that some of the effects weren't rendering or there was a stutter in the picture etc so what I did was split the time line into smalle 20min sequences which I then rendered out to QT files.
    The played perfectly with no problems and all the effects worked.
    I've then imported them back into FCP onto the same timeline with the same settings as the original 72min sequence. The render bars are grey so no rendering is required...
    I've then set it to export to a self contained QT movie with sound and chapter markers.
    As I write it is now on 7% rendered and with 6 days to go... Why is it going to take so long, I haven't applied any additional effects to the clips. There is only a .wav file for the soundtrack which is rendered in the timline so I really don't understand why the rendertimes have doubled?? I'm pretty sure they will go up as the render gets progressed... Please can someone point out what I've done wrong?
    If there is nothing I can do does anyone know of a company that have a rendering service?
    I'm a home user and not a professional so it is very likely that I have not done something right - be gentle!

    These are the features of the rendered Timeline to which I was referring....
    If those tabs are not spanning your red lined content, then move the tabs with the mouse cursor so that they do.
    You can also do this with shortcuts....move the Timeline Indicator to the start of the Timeline content...then as you hold down
    the Alt key of the computer main keyboard, hit the left bracket key of the computer keyboard [  ....now move the Timeline
    Indicator to the end of the content...then as you hold down the Alt key, hit the right bracket key ]
    Also, important...what video card/graphics card does your Premiere Elements 10 use? If NVIDIA GeForce, please read the
    Annoucement at the top of this forum on the serious Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA Ge Force issue which forces the user
    to roll back the driver version to about May 2013 in order to get Premiere Elements 10 to work. All the details on that particular matter, fixes, and how

    I downloaded both the Sony Vegas and After Effects version .
    I rendered the Sony Vegas version in 720p 30 FPS and it looks like 60 FPS

    Without knowing exact render settings you used nobody can say anything. Both versions look just fine to me. In fact the AE version actually looks better, so I'm not sure what you are getting at...

    i am working on the improvement of architecture n design of the project
    pls help me in deciding the best and the fastest way to develop this application further.
    i am designing a framework based on my experience and
    am also doing some research on whats latest which can accelerate
    and improve the development process.
    here's what i have and want to know what u think abt it.
    pls suggest some new good frameworks if you are aware of.
    Technologies to be used
    Fat client front end : Java Swings
    Web server : Tomcat,Struts
    Database : Mysql
    FrameWorks
    Client side
    XXXView.Java(is the GUI layer) (where xxx is any module specific name)

    XXXWebHandle.java(this java file will have the code to
    connect to the webserver using the apache httpclient)
    it will call a struts action file specifically
    the data collected from the gui components will be transformed
    into xml and sent to the struts action file.
    Server Side
    xxxaction.java(this file will parse the xml data from client side
    and save it to the datbase using jdbc statements
    it will also retrive data and metadata from database using jdbc queries
    and convert it into xml and send it back as http response to the XXXwebhandle.java
    which then parses back the xml data and puts it on the GUI components of XXXview.java files.
    THe Problems
    1) the conversion of database query resultset to xml at server and the xml back to fields data
    takes a lot of time and is cumbersome to code as we need code the xml
    defination pattern for every data exchange between server and client.
    we need to remove XML .................is it possible????
    can we send data back to client as java objects and if yes then how??.
    2) right now we are making JDBC calls to mysql database using a common Utility class file
    created for handling all kinds of sql statements and return the data via a hashtable object.
    We need to use a ORM tool here............dont know which to use and how to use.
    heard of hibernate and EJB.pls suggest which one to use
    Overall i would appreciate if someone can suggest me good architecture.
    is there any framework readily available for developing these kinda apps
    pls guide or give me links where i can get info abt this.

    IMO, you should take a look at Eclipse's SWT in addition to Java's Swing. SWT has outstanding performance and looks native. Struts is not a web server. Place that entry instead down in 'frameworks'. MySQL is a good database, but I prefer Postgres, which is also free and implements more of ANSI SQL.

    Place Struts here. Also consider using Spring on your server side. BTW, what is Struts doing other than acting as a Controller? Presumably your fat client is the View. No?

    No, no no. Hashtable (and all Maps) have no type-safety. You can introduce lots of programming errors casting from Object to another type. It is far better to create an actual Java object that will hold the data. It seems to take more time, but you will have far fewer runtime errors in your application during development, which IMO, actually speeds up the process overall.
    We need to use a ORM tool here............dont know
    which to use and how to use.

    Rapidly? Hard to say. I would steer clear of full blown J2EE with EJB's or MDB's if you want to speed up development. Ruby on Rails also generates some press for rapidly putting sites together.

  • Quad G5 Maya 2008 Rendering Help!

    Hey, I'm back again with a new dilema! Still rocking my new (to me of course) quad G5, with it's stock GeForce 6600.
    I'm thinking of getting into some serious modeling with Maya 2008, and I wanted to know what graphics card would help the best with rendering *in Maya only*.
    Ive really only narrowed it down to a Radeon X1900, 7800 GTX, or Quadro FX 4500. As far as I can tell via my Googling, you can flash a 7800 GTX to a 4500 and vice versa with the correct ROMs?
    Anyway, I play a ton of games on my Macs, so I need something that won't be terrible at high end games like Quake4/Doom3/Halo, yet still be able to be used for hardware rendering in Maya 2008.

    Does anyone have an opinion on this? Would it be best to just get the 7800 GTX and flash it to a FX 4500 when needed in Maya, or can I still use it as a true 7800 GTX and have Maya enable the advanced rendering like it would on the Quadro as the article about Maya 7 said you can with the 7800 GT?

    Quadros need to be fashed with Quadro ROM. The Geforce 7800 GTX is a modified Quadro ROM, modified to meet the spec differences between the two cards.
    Using the 7800 GTX mod ROM in the FX 4500 isn't what you want to do.
    Just flash the Quadro to a Mac Quadro and you should have a heckuva card for cheap!

  • Mail's Monoco 9 rendering help in 10.9, sigh

    Hey everyone!
    Someone here probably knows the quick answer to this question, but it's not something that the average users knows off the top of their head.  When I updated to 10.9, Mail no longer renders my font setting of Monaco 9 properly in message text (reading or editing) -- please see the attached pic.  Note the extremely poorly rendered text at the bottom right.  Anyone who knows the fix, thanks in advance! 

    For reference, I put a TextEdit window in the screenshot with a Monaco 9 sample.

  • Datagrid colum item renderer HELP!!!!!

    Hi,
    I have the below datagrid, and I have to populate one of the column with three different images, a cricle an squeare and a triangle. I've been sucessful adding dinamically the differents itemrenderers. For the triangle one it has been a really pain in the *** tying to draw the triangle, but finally i figured it out, and I can draw it, but I cant set the result triangle in the middle of the column, I dont know if it's a Sprite. But I've tried with a button and it sets in th emiddle of the column, so it has to be because the sprite or something i'm doing work in some of the classes. Please HELP!!! I really appreciate your help and advice I'm newbie at Flex.

    Here is my Scenario, in my datagrid the second column of the first row (987.93) background color depends upon some condtion. The remaning rows of column B depends upon the column C . If "the column C is OK" it will be green , "NOT OK" red. But the first row's second column color depends upon some other condition. How can i achieve this ?

  • Three(two)-tier architecture - need help

    Hello,
    very need your advice about implementing 3-tier architecture with .NET.
    My intention was to organize the following architecture: server contains data access layer and business layer, and ODP.NET is installed on the server, client requests business layer on the server through .NET Remoting. Business layer on the server returns typed data sets;objects on the server implement interfaces, which return data sets. So, client dlls need to reference only this data sets declaration (which are vendor independent) and interfaces, and no ODP.NET is needed on the client. The problem is that when I generate data source in Visual Studio 2008, it generates also references on ODP.NET, so I cannot reference this project in client application! While I need "pure" data sets, without ODP.NET references, but, at the same time, I want to use auto-generated adapters and not write code manually!
    How can I do it?

    For me, I will use Web Services to achieve this. Somehow, you can use other remoting method to do that as well.

  • After Effects CS5 - Rendering Help!

    I recently got AE CS5.  When I had CS4, i would always render it as a Windows Media File (.wmv).  But now in CS5 when I render it as that, it just messes up. The size of the finally rendered HD clip will be no more than a few hundred KB's, and sometimes won't even play. Any suggestions?

    Provide more details about your settings, which version of Windows and where you are storing the file. CS5 being 64bit, there could be any number of issues caused by the differences of 32bit vs. 64bit, including some very rudimentary Windows stuff not related to Adobe....

  • CS6 video rendering help

    Hi I put together a series of short videos about 1min to 4 min each. It totaled about 25mins for all of them. I did a few edits, converted to a smart object and added a noise reduction filter and went to render it. It took over 12 hours for this to render? I just got a Mac last year with 16gigs of ram and 2 tb of memory. All software is updated. Why is this taking so long to render? The output settings were the default ones. Help. This isn't encouraging me to edit videos at all.

    What is the actual problem? Will it not open again? Are you not sure how to open it?
