Architecture Student In search of a perfect laptop

This is a student of Architecture from India.
Since new to the field, now i do not use the rendering and all too much but with the advancement in semester, I would be using rendering and stuff too much!!
I sometimes might have to do small video editings as well,,
I have to buy a new laptop..
I have gone through Apple macbook pro's' and have gone through various reviews onlne and found that apple macbook pro is kinda the master of all as of right now in terms of processing....
But here i have a few questions.........
1.] Is Mac suitable for an architecture students?? 'coz most of the softwares used in architectural field do not offer all the features in mac version!
2.] So how is mac superior to Windows and would it really help me??
3.] Next thing is if i go for Mac only......then which macbookpro should i choose?
I would be needing atleast 256 GB[enough 'coz i would be storing most of the data on an external hard disk]
                                               16 GB RAM
The thing now is i want a laptop which is ultraportable..... 13inch macbook pro with Retina display seems to be the perfect model for that but it has Intel iris integrated graphics card whereas 15 inch has NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB GDDR5 memory so I'm a bit confused....
Would there be any problem if i purchase a 13 inch model with Intel Iris graphics card with 16 GB RAM or is there any option of customising the 13 inch laptop such that we could get the NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB GDDR5 in that only??
OR should i go for 15inch only?? [The problem with 15inch is that its screen size is too big..... and even the cost is out of my budget]
4.] Is it possible to install Windows OS in Macbook pro??? If so, then how???
It would be really helpful if you help me solving my problem!
Thanks a lot!!!!!

You have to find out the specific program requirements for your course of study. You want to be as compatible as possible with the technology used by your professors and other students. Call the school's architecture department and ask them their recommendation. If the other students and professors are using Windows computers perhaps you should also be using a Windows computer. You don't want to be burdened with incompatibility of assignments and group projects.

The search for a perfect design pattern
I am searching tip to upgrade a labview program used. I am looking for the best approach to make
my program more robust and scalable.Software and hardware.
Today the system consists of :
GPS, weather station, ultrasound wind sensor, echosounder  and a  webcamera,  all connected to a computer.
The computer OS is XP pro with Labview version 2009 installed. Except for the webcamera all peripherals have serial communication interface.
    The webcamera  interface is ethernet.
    Device                           Data type                 Interval                    Interface
GPS                                NMEA string                1 second                   Serial  rs232
Ultrasound wind sensor   NMEA string                1 second                   Serial rs232
Weather, temp, humid     NMEA string               35 seconds                 Serial rs232
Echosounder                  NMEA string               500ms-5 seconds       Serial rs232
                                                                          (depending of depth)
Webcamera                    Jpg                           Snapshot on demand  Ethernet
    The tasks to be solved
All the data have to be stored.
All the data have to be displayed in real time.
Weather history data must be buffered to be plotted in a graph (pop-up windows).
Absolute wind speed and direction have to be calculated.
Option to send navigation data attached to email at desired time intervals.
Image snapshot at desired time intervals.
The data wich streams into the serial ports are not synchronized and vary in intervals . Would it be a good idea to put all the serial peripherals into a serial device server. Is it possible to let the server place a event in my software, to  trigger reading of the data, from the the server.  Or how could that be done in other ways?
    The perfect design pattern
In version one of the software I use 4 parallel loops to read data at the serial ports, inside these loops the data was separated and outputted to a datasocket server.  I used datasocked read in other loops to present and store data. But it did not look good, and yes it was a mess, a really rat nest. I am looking for a better design pattern.
Could some kind of producer/ consumer pattern be the way to go?
    Comments and tips are wanted.

    Nice Project! Congratulations ;-)
I am not an expert for large applications. But your project looks nice and manageable. Here my straightforward ideas:
I would build a GUI, with menu bar, pop-up graph display thing.
THen low level tasks with each one handling a RS232 device and feeding queues or fireing notifications.
Maybe handle the snapshots in an event structure on the GUI blockdiagramm.
When GUI and producer tasks are running, close the gap with a middle layer which captures the data and actualizes GUI by reference. For instance the graph-thing-dialogue triggers a "flush queue" and displays the last 200 entries of the array of data.
I often run into issues when having defined too many userevent structures. I guess i am too stupid for that. Thats why i rather use queues (when i dont want to loose data) or notifiers (data is up-to-date). Nevertheless I like a "stop-all-tasks" user event...traditionally.
My team is actually developing a large application. We are using LabVIEW classes and objects.
    So have fun!

  • Architecture student, Which MacBook Pro should I buy?

I want to buy a macbook pro, i'm going to study architecture, but I don't know which model is the best one to run AutoCad and other architecture programs.
    I think I need a i7 chip, but I don't know if the 13-inch MBP i7 dual-core 8gb Ram or 15-inch MBP i7 Quad-core 4Gb Ram, what do you think?

Well I got the MBP 13" 2.9 GHz. I weighed all the options the price differences and pros and cons. I'm am very happy with my dission.
The Retina was way out of price range for what you get. The ability to no upgrade unit was a huge turnoff. And to buy it fully loaded was not even worth it. I don't have that kinda dough to throw around, and I think it highly over rated. It's new and has a wow factor, but does not make sense. Millions of great photos connived and edited before retina display, so to say its needed or worth it at that price is not logical for me.
The 15" was a close to me, but $700 difference out of pocket still was not sure for me after selling my old MPB. portability was issue, and if my old 13" MBP did my editing ok in PS CS5 and Lightroom 4 then the new 13" should be no problem.
    What I got:
I got MBP 13" 2.9MHz i7. I figured it have a better resale value in long run over the 2.3MHz i5.
the size is perfect as I travel all the time. I'm a pilot full time so it fits in my camera bag perfect.
I added my already owned 256GB SSD drive in it, and upgraded to 16GB RAM for $110. It's amazing fast. 4 sec open PS CS6.
I have been using it to edit my photos in LTR4 and PS CS6, no problem and fast. In the 14 days owned I have not even opened the cover of my laptop, it's always been used on external 27" display. So money saved I upgraded my gear New CF Cards, USB 3.0 HUB, USB 3.0 Card Reader, USB 3.0 External Hadrive.  Still money saved, cause I sold all my old USB and Drives and Cardsbon EBay too.  The USB 3.0 was main reason I upgraded, it's worth it to. 3.0 makes a differencebandni can see the transfer speed differences. So much faster.
So theres my reasons for doing what I did.

  • Student master search options

    Hi
Currently when entering a name or application number as a search within the student master an options box is provided detailing object id, object abbreviation, object name, start date, end date.
We need to now also display the ucas personal id number which is displayed within the 'identification nos' tab within the student master. In our instance this is VBUT0ID-IDNUMBER where VBUT0ID-TYP = PSGBPI
We will need this search/display option wherever we look for student numbers
Anybody able to offer any suggestions?
    Many thanks

  • MacBook for architecture student going to Singapore

    Hi!
I'm studying architecture in Poland. In august I'm going for one term to Singapore to study. I've got to buy a laptop. Now I'm working with Corel, AutoCAD, sometimes ArchiCAD and 3Dmax. Could you give me some advice on hardware with warranty valid around the world? Does anyone know what architectural software is commonly used in Singapore?
    Thanks in advance for replying.

  • Can I run the Creative Suite for student on both my computer and laptop?

    Hi,
I just bought the Creative Suite 5.5 Design Standar for teachers and students.
I have installed the software on my computer at home using the cds.
I should be able to use it on my laptop aswell, but I'm having difficulties to install it.
My laptop CD player is broken so I've downloaded the suite from Internet.
I tried then to use the same serial number but nothing happened.
How am I supposed to do?
I am pretty sure that the license says I can run it on both supports as long as I don't use them on the same time.
Does anyone know anything about that?
A little help will be much appreciated!
    Cheers!

The error message indicates that it's not an activation problem, but a problem with the serial number itself.
Where did you find the serial number? The number should  be in the format XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX where each X is a number.
If you're satisfied that you have indeed found and correctly entered the serial number, then you'll have to call Adobe Customer Service and talk to a specialist. We are not Adobe, but users, and we can't help with that kind of problem.

  • I'm an architecture student, which macbook should i buy?

thinking about buying 13" macbook pro retina display for architecture. But some people say that program such as autocad wont run well on the 13" model. The 15" is very expensive for me

Talk with the School of Architecture where you are attending. Ask the professors, IT Support, and other students what they recommend. Personally I would have a hard tine looking at or working with graphics using a 13" display.

  • Student version of LR5 installed on laptop. Need to install on new PC. Can I? And how?

I have the student version of LR5 (updated to newest version of 5.5) installed on a laptop which is severely underpowered.
I'm getting a new PC built that I would like to either re-install or copy over the LR5 file.
My concern is losing the photo collections that are currently working just fine, al be it very slow and cranky.
What is the best method of putting the student version of LR5 on the new PC?
Or, because it is a student version, do I need to uninstall first? If so, what happens to the photo collections?
Thank you in advance for your help.

The student version of Lightroom is no different than the "full" version. There is only one version of Lightroom. It's only a difference in licensing. You can install the student version on your new computer. In fact, since you have verified that you are eligible for the student version, and have your serial number, you can just download Lightroom 5.5 and install it. Then you can use that serial number to activate the trial version.
As far as your existing catalog, photos and collections are concerned, copy your catalog and photos to the new computer. Double-click on the catalog and go to work. If your photos are not on the same drive letter designation on the new computer you will have to synchronize everything. Here are instructions on how to do that:

  • The Search for the Perfect Flash Player.......Help..

Okay, here's my deal, I skateboard. Alot. Obviously, there's alot of hard landing and stuff of the sort. I need a player that can stand up to this. Here's what I need and what I'd like, if anyone can recommend something that matches this exactly, I would be greatly appreciati've.
Basically, my Micro is EXACTLY what I want, minus the fact that it's a HDD MP3 player (well, for skateboarding, that is, I did want an HDD MP3 player).
<B>. A dedicated removeable rechargeable battery (not AA/AAA)</B>
<I>When MP3 players have a dedicated, non-standard rechargeable battery, the MP3 player also doubles as the battery charger. I don't want to use rechargeable AA/AAA batteries, because unless the MP3 player has a built-in AA/AAA charger (I highly highly doubt any MP3 player charges standard batteries), I'd have to be lugging around either a bunch of batteries or a AA/AAA battery charger. And that kills the point of being portable.
I listen to my music ALL DAY, usually about 2 hours or more, so it's also good to be able to remove the rechargeable battery and replace it with another one. The only exception I would accept (regarding being removeable) is if the battery really does last all day. The ONLY player I've ever had that I could take with me ALL DAY and still have enough juice to come back the next day without charging it was my Rio Nitrus (.5Gb capacity). </I>
<B>2. Drag and Drop Transfer of Songs With NO Installation of Software</B>
<I>I love the fact that I can bring my Micro to school and just plug the cable into the computer and then go grab a few CD's from their library, rip them, then transfer them to my Micro, all without having to install the ZMME software.
I love being able to just plug it in and have Windows XP recognize it as an MTP player and allow me to browse the file structure and literally drag and drop songs directly to the music folder itself without messing around with a bunch of extra software.</I>
    <B>3. A Display</B>
<I>Not all MP3 players have one. I would like to be able to have visual feedback about what song I am playing and whatnot. If it were not for this fact, I probably would have gotten an iPod Shuffle *gasp, gagging, choking*</I>
<B>4. Large Capacity (at least 52MB)</B>
<I>While Gb would be nice, I know that size comes with money, and anyways, I already have my high capacity music player (my Micro). All I need is a player that can hold at least 00 songs so I can listen to a small variety of songs that pump me to skateboard.</I>
<B><I>Things I Would Like, But Are Not Necessary</I></B>
<B>5. Ability To Create (and Save) OR Utilize Playlists</B>
<I>While it doesn't need to be able to actually create "on the fly" playlists like my Micro, I do want it to be able to somehow allow me to create a playlist, even if it's through the software that comes with it. When I skateboard, there are different songs I enjoy to hear that get me pumped for different things (getting started/warmed up, rolling around, jumping stairs, etc.). Sometimes I'm just not in the mood to hear every song on my player, and even if I am, sometimes I want to hear them in a specific order.</I>
<B>6. Moderately Small, But Not Too Small</B>
<I>Yes, there is such thing as being too small. I don't want something that looks like Barbie and Ken's boombox (at Wal-Mart they are selling this uber small MP3 player cube that is about the height of a quarter and the width of a quarter). I want it to be big enough that I have no problem with the controls, yet not too big. Anything bigger than the Micro is probably a tad too big, especially considering flash players don't have an HDD inside them, so they are relati'vely smaller in the first place.</I>
<B>7. Ability to Play WMA's In Addition to MP3's</B>
<I>I do have a converter that can convert between all audio formats, but the simple truth is that while it's not difficult at all, it can get annoying and time consuming. In addition, I have gotten alot of music from my friends. They all have WMP, so they simply rip it to their computer as WMA's. If the player supports this format, then I can simply transfer the song onto my player and start listening to it right away, instead of waiting to convert it when I got home to my computer.</I>
    <B>8. A Built-In USB Port</B>
<I>The only two players that I have seen like this are the iPod Shuffle and the Zen Nano/Nano Plus. This is a great benefit to me in the fact that I don't need any cables or anything. Literally nothing else. Just the player itself. All I have to do is plug it in and that's it. No carrying around anything else if I want music from someone's computer. So easy and convenient....</I>
<B>9. Ability to Charge the Battery Through the USB Port of a Computer</B>
<I>This is a great feature (but to be honest, unnecessary for me) of my Micro. It's really convenient to be able to just plug it into any computer's USB port (with the correct FW and being locked) and charge it. Even though computers need outlets to operate (not including laptops), sometimes all of the outlets are being used, so the ability to charge itself through the USB port is awesome.</I>
In conclusion, I love my Micro, and I do indeed skateboard with it. I have taken a few rough falls with it, but it has never suffered from it. My headphones have popped out of the jack a few times, but never had a negati've consequence from it. I love it and it's the best to me. It's everything I want in an MP3 player, but that won't change the fact that it has a HDD inside of it. And if it falls on the ground, then I'm basically watching my $200 fall into the toilet. I need a flash player that is basically a Micro clone so it can withstand bumps and bruises and jostles (yes, I know it is not recommended to bump, bruise or jostle ANY electronic, including flash players, but they ARE advertised for sports ((yes, even though not extreme sports)), and are shown to withstand movement more than HDD MP3 players.
I actually find it fascinating with all of my skateboarding (especially with my jumping down stairs and ocassional hard falls) that my Micro has never skipped a beat. Ever. I'm obviously not condoning how I treat the poor baby, but I'm just so proud of the fact that I have the little girl (haha, yes, it's a girl).
There are two MP3 players that have come oh so close to my desperate requirements, but they are both missing just one vital thing that stops me from getting either one.
    <B>Zen Nano/Nano Plus</B>
I would get this if it had a rechargeable battery (see # above) or if it could charge AAA batteries. If anyone knows if this this can recharge AAA batteries, please tell me, as I will go buy it right away.
    <B>iPod Shuffle</B>
Yes, I know, it's horrible, the iPod Shuffle actually did come into my mind and I did seriously consider buying it. However, the crippling problem with the iPod Shuffle is that it has no screen. I want visual feedback about what I'm playing, not just to go by an audible cue or remembering what songs I have on it. And since it has one major crippling factor, the fact that it's battery is not removeable kills it. The only lifting factor of it is the fact that it can charge through the USB port.
Oh yeah, I don't want an iPod Nano, either, even though it fits most of the requirements. I just can't take the scratches.......hahaha.Message Edited by RMskater on 09-26-2005 0:00 PM

<EM>AA and AAA rechargeables are great. One can usually charge up to four at a time with most chargers, and chargers that take an hour or less are available(the 5 minute chargers require special batteries and put excessi've strain on the batteries). They are also very inexpensi've. Carrying a few spares is no big deal. I have small plastic cases that were specifically made to hold 2 AA or AAA batteries and other cases specifically designed for 4 of them. I would hate to have to swap out the player battery, swap in the spare then plug the player in just to charge spares one at a time. Proprietary batteries are expensi've, while AA or AAA nimh rechargeables are often around $0 or so for 4(for the higher capacity ones. Slightly lower capacity ones are even cheaper).</EM>

  • Searching for "the perfect soundcard"

    Hi
Im looking for a fully linux compatible, no propritary drivers needed, soundcard for use in a semi low budget radio production.
Im not very audiophile myself, but some of my fellow radio technicians keeps insisting on balanced in/out.
In time we would like to digitize the sound, but for now, our mixer can only output analog.
    So
    - Full alsa compatible
    - Balanced in/out
    - digital in/out
    - prefered PCI(e*) - but usb is acceptable
    Price <=200€ (~$275)
Above mentioned is my preferred setup, but i am willing to compromize on analog input (just to put pressure on the guy thats going to buy a new mixer), So tell me what you use for your (semi)professional audio equipment.

I am currently also looking for a good quality soundcard only for listening music(2speaker or headphone, no multi.channel needed) that works under linux.
still can't decide which one I shall go with.
    more advices please, thx!

  • Programming for College with Windows Apps on bootcamp HELP?

Hello everyone I come to you for help after a long search for the perfect laptop.
Right now I am using a macbook late 2009 with multitouch. I love the features but after signing up for some programming classes for college I had to revise what laptop I should own.
My question is if I'll be able to program on bootcamp with Windows 7 with windows applications like Dev C++, Microsoft Visual Studio, Eclipse, an assembler and the like with 100% compatibility?
I am on a very low income but I think that Apple really gets it when it comes to mobile laptops. I haven't found anything comparable to a Macbook anywhere. I've seen some imitations like the HP Envy but when you look closely they do not come close.
Laptop PC makers just don't get it with their 2 hour battery life, "Desktop replacements" and heavy laptops. What is the point of all that if it's not mobile.
I can only own one laptop and I will upgrade to a 15 inch because I need the screen real state. I'm hoping that the answer will be YES to compatibility with programming applications on Windows 7.
One last thing, I've heard of Xcode but college teaches on Windows Applications, there is no way around it. I need to use what everyone else is using right now.
    Thank you all.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
running Windows with BootCamp on a Mac is like running Windows on any other given computer.
Those programs you mentioned shouldn't give you any kind of problems.
Only very low-level BIOS and/or hardware programming (in assembler) can arise problems due to some differences between Macs and 'other' PCs (like the lack of a full BIOS support).
Other than that you're good to go.
    Have Fun
    Stefan

  • Can I view a video from my macbook pro on my TV using apple TV while doing something else on the laptop desktop? I.E. watch a video on the tv, while searching the web on the laptop screen?

First off, I just want to clarify that I know how to view my macbook screen, videos, music, photos etc. through the apple tv connected to my hdtv. What I'm trying to do is use it like a second monitor. For example, I'd like to watch a video from the web through the apple tv on the hdtv screen, while simultaneously able to search and use the laptop like I normally would. I know there are two desktops with Mountain Lion, but I haven't been able to figure out how to link one to the apple tv and leave the other as the macbook. I know I've done this before when I had a macbook 13" and a cable connector, there was a setting in system preferences to view one screen (tv) with a video, and then still have the macbook screen free to search for files, the web, etc.... This is different from mirroring, but I haven't located this setting on the new macbook yet.
Ideally I'd like to be able to use my hdtv as a second monitor so I can be sorting and organizing photo files on the macbook, while viewing full size high resolution images on the TV screen. I've got a ton of photographs, close to a personal library you could ask me for a type of photo and I've probably got it, but there is a decent amount of extras, doubles, and just stuff I don't need. This would really help me get organized and allow me to share my work a little bit more efficiently.
I appreciate any insights and hope I can return the favor.
    Much Love
    Soulprogression

I do not know how to do this with an Apple TV (I don't have one), but as far as I know Apple TV only does mirroring.
If you have an HDMI cable long enough to reach your TV from where you sit, then it's easy. The TV could be set up in Extended Desktop mode (mirroring off) as if it was simply another computer monitor, and then you could just drag windows to it. If you have the Displays icon in your menu bar, that's where the setting is, or if the icon is not there, then the setting is in the Displays system preference. But again, that's for conventionally connected monitors, not Apple TV. If you don't have an HDMI cable and wanted a long one that's affordable you can get those at monoprice.com.
The answer we are still waiting for is if anyone knows if Apple TV can be used in extended desktop (non-mirroring) mode.

  • Laptops for college (computer science)

Hey! I'm going to be a college student in just a few weeks, and one of the hardest things about it is trying to buy the perfect laptop. I have been searching for one with certain specs that still remains good in quality and relatively cheap.
    My specs are:
    4th gen i7
    at least 500gb hard drive
    6-8gb ram (preferably 8)
dvd drive (blu ray if possible)
    backlit keyboard (important)
    webcam (usually standard)
    matte (only if possible)
Max budget (probably 900 at the very most)
Do you guys have any suggestions? Do you have any laptops that people haven't really complained about as far as hardware failures or any problems? Are you coming out with any laptops in a few days? I still need to actually go to the store and try some out but I just wanted to hear some quick suggestions! Thanks!

dvd drive (blu ray if possible)
    backlit keyboard (important)
    webcam (usually standard)
    matte (only if possible)
Max budget (probably 900 at the very most)
Do you guys have any suggestions? Do you have any laptops that people haven't really complained about as far as hardware failures or any problems? Are you coming out with any laptops in a few days? I still need to actually go to the store and try some out but I just wanted to hear some quick suggestions! Thanks!
Oh yeah, I almost forgot, BluRay has only found itself on TVs as the norm for viewing entertainment. It still  has not caught up to the world of computers yet for some odd reason perhaps technology costs and barriers, but if you do find one, prepare to pay a pretty penny. You can buy an external one for not too much money but be sure the hardware you buy can decode and playback BluRay if you decide to go this route.
