Archive All disabled in iMovie 09

I need to "Archive All" videos from my flip video recorder, but the button is disabled. Why is it disabled ? How do I enable it ?
Thanks in advance.

There are certain camera which shoot AVCHD. Archive All lets you preserve an identical copy of your AVCHD files on disk in case you ever need the raw files again. This is necessary for two reasons. First, the AVCHD files are converted to Apple Intermediate Codec when you import them to iMovie. This makes the files size from 4 to 10 times larger. So the Archive function makes it convenient to keep un original, highly compressed copy. Second, iMovie will not import a standalone mts file. It needs the full folder structure of the camera to do an import.
If your camera records in DV or h.264, there is no need for Archive All, because the file imported in the Event is the same as the file on the camera.

I am trying to use Archive All function of imovie 09 to archive my HDR-SR12 Sony camcorder. It fails with the message:

There should be better messages in your logs. Download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Navigate to the failed backup, then copy and post the messages here (be sure to get them all, as sometimes they overflow the small window).

Hi - I'm having the same problem with freeing up space on the HD. If I can't free space if I'm using any part of the clip, how can I split up the clips so that I can discard the part I won't use? This is crazy! I have only 4 GB of free space left!
Also, I've tried to transfer the project file to my external HD but I keep getting an error saying I can't transfer it. I've been told this is because I don't have enough space on the HD for the transfer. I tried a similar transfer with another computer with plenty of HD space but the same error occurred. Is there a way to break up the project file into small pieces for the transfer (I'm thinking the whole movie file is just too big)?
    Thanks for any info!

  • Tip: iMovie "Archive all..." saves files from AVCHD, then ingest into FCE4

I just discovered a useful trick. Much is made in the FCE4 manual about not being able to ingest AVCHD footage from a disk - you have, it says, to use the camcorder. Not so if you have iMovie 09 as well (not sure about earlier versions).
Connect the camcorder to the Mac and open iMovie 09. Click the camera icon to open the capture window if it doesn't do it automatically and click the "Archive all..." button at the bottom of the window. When you save the "archive" file, you end up with a folder that contains everything from the camcorder.
    Disconnect the camcorder.
Now open FCE 4. Go to File > Log and Transfer. The window opens but there's nothing there to ingest. Drag the archive file onto the left-hand pane or use the "Add Folder" button at the top left to find and open the archive folder. The AVCHD files appear in the window as if the camcorder were attached and you can ingest them in the normal way.
I find this handy for dumping everything off the camera and storing it in its smaller, native format for working on later. I'd imagined I was going to have to store all my archived footage in SuperSized Intermediate Codec format, which was quite a scary prospect, but this means I can save many camerafuls of stuff at its native size and still ingest selected bits into FCE4 at any time when I want to play around with them
Obviously native AVCHD support would be even more splendid, but this is a useful work around for now.
(note: I'm using a Canon HF-S10, but I'm assuming this would work for other AVCHD camcorders)

    you did!
as the iMovie guy here at the boards, I raise the flag for 'my' tool.. because, read exactly, what FC Mastermind Tom told you:
.. Any folder than _maintains the AVCHD wrapper_ can be used, whether it's created in iMovie or simply by dragging the disk or memory card contents to a a hard drive.
means: if you drag just the .mts files, which contains the 'video' => kaputt, no import into FCE (or iMovie)
all those BDMV, AVF_INFO, cpi, bdm, bnp, whatever files & folders have to complete and untouched transfered to disk..
.. ok, what could go wrong by dragging a whole folder from cam to HDD.. ? but, iM makes it .. dummy-proof.. (no offense!!!!)..

  • All of my imovie events are stored on an external hard drive.  How do I backup this external hard drive? If the external hard drive crashes, how do retrieve the imovie events?

I have all of my imovie events stored on an external hard drive in order to save space on my MacBook Pro's internal drive.  I currently back up both my MacBook Pro and the external hard drive  using a second external hard drive via Time Machine. I have a few questions:
    1. How can I be sure that the external drive is actually being backed up.
    2. How do I retrieve the imovie events if the 1st external hard drive crashes?
    Thank for your help!

Let me give you some thoughts. I can tell you my plan, but ultimately you will need your own plan that makes sense for you.
I do not think that your idea of having two separate Time Machine destinations will work. You can have two external drives as Time Machine volumes, but they will both back up the same data set. You cannot dedicate one to iMovie and one to everything else. They will both have everything, so you may still have a space problem.
One way to overcome this is to back up the iMovie volume by using a tool like SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner. The good news is that your Event files should be pretty stable and there is no need to back them up every 15 minutes. So something like SuperDuper, which you can set to automatically backup once a day, for example, is probably fine. I am pretty sure that this would work if you kept the Projects on the same external drive. As long as Projects and Events are on the same drive, then the cloning stragy should work (but you should always test.)
Because projects change more often than events, and projects can become corrupted, I would definitely back up the Project Library to Time Machine. You can do this even though it is on an external drive. (And even though you may be periodically backing up the entire drive that contains the projects.)
Here are some thoughts on how I approach backup, copied from an earlier answer...
    ============================================================
Great question. I think the issue of backup is a important one, and one I always worry about since I have a lot of video footage that is irreplaceable.
For back-up, it is helpful to define the risk you are trying to protect from.
    For example,
    1) risk of corruption in iMovie --> I  use Time Machine
    2) risk of hard drive failure --> I use SuperDuper! nightly for bootable backup) and Time Machine all the time
    3) Risk of theft or fire --> offsite backup
    Here is what I do...
    1) I back up my boot disk with SuperDuper automatically each night so I always have a bootable system.
    2) I back up my original video files. For my Motion JPEG, VHS-->AIC, DV, and 8MM to DV, the EVENT is the copy I back up. (I keep the tapes, but I never want to have to import the tapes again.)
For my AVCHD high def video, I back up the camera archive of the AVCHD, but I am not currently backing up the Event files, because I would need from 4 to 8 TB to back up these events depending on whether I made one copy or two. I can always re-create the Event from the camera archive.
    3) I use CrashPlan for my offsite backup. It costs less than $4 per month, and I seeded the initial backup to an external drive to minimize having to transfer video files over the Internet. I currently have over 2TB of data backed up to CrashPlan, which includes my entire boot drive, and the files described in #2.
    4) All of the above is automated, so I don't have to think about it too much. If I have to manually do stuff, I tend to get behind.
You have to consider the value of total multiple redundancy vs. the likelihood that 2 or three unlikely events would all happen at once. For example, CrashPlan could lose my data. My hard disk could fail. I could lose everything in a fire. But it is unlikely that they would all happen at once, except in nuclear war, in which case, who cares?

  • Import camera archive not working in iMovie '11 on 1.8.2?

I typically copy the contents of my camcorder to a folder on disk and then would select "import camera archive". However, now with Moutain Lion it is not recognizing any of my folders as a AVCHD folder?
As a test, I took a DMG file (which is how I used to do it, because prior versions of iMovie didn't support anything other then this) and performed a "archive all" on that DMG.. This should be no different then copying the files and tried on this newly created Camera Archive and I get the same results?
It seems that with moutain lion, tha AVCHD contents of are now recognized by Finder and show up as a type "AVCHD Content"..
    Help!?
    thanks,

    Hi,
My problem is very similar. I am able to choose the Archive folder and import the footage that way.  However, I am only able to do that once.  If I try again, it states the file is not a camera archive format file.
The only way I can get it to work again is to completely close out iMovie and restart.  Then I can import an archived file.  But then again, only once before I have to restart iMovie to get it to work again.
    Anyone have any workarounds?
    Thanks

  • Java - Shared archive: sharing disabled for server vm ?

    Hi,
My mac is PowerMac G5(1.8Ghz) + leopard server 10.5.1.
    I have a question.
After typing *java -version*, the following messages are shown.
*Shared archive: sharing disabled for server vm*
    *java version "1.5.0_13"*
*Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_13-b05-237)*
*Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_13-119, mixed mode)*
What is *Shared archive: sharing disabled for server vm* ?
    Using my other macs, iMac(Intel 1.8GHz) and PowerBook G4(1.5GHz) + leopard client-10.5.1,
    the message is
    *java version "1.5.0_13"*
*Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_13-b05-237)*
*Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_13-119, mixed mode, sharing)*
    So, the difference is "sharing".
    Anyone know what it means?

I'm getting the same message. I'm intrigued. This would seem to be something to do with the new version of Java
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_13-b05-237)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_13-119, mixed mode, sharing)
I don't get the message when doing java -version, but I do get it when starting JBoss:
./run.sh: line 80: ulimit: open files: cannot modify limit: Invalid argument
run.sh: Could not set maximum file descriptor limit: unlimited

  • Using "Archive All" with individual clips?

When importing video from my AVCHD camera, I like to use the "Archive All" option at the bottom of the Import window.  That way I can quickly just transfer the raw files to a hard drive and import the clips I want for editing into iMovie later.
Ideally I'd like to archive individual clips in this same manner.  Typically my camera will have clips from several unrelated events I need to archive.  I'd like to archive the clips from each event into separate archives.  However it seems like the only option is "Archive All", which puts everything on the camera into a single archive.  If I immediately imported the video from my camera after each event I shot this wouldn't be such a problem.  But sometimes I forget or shoot multiple events in one day, so this functionality would be useful.
Just to make sure, I tried selecting individual clips and then doing "Archive All", but as I expected it ignores the checkboxes and just archives everything.
Is there any way to archive individually selected clips?

That makes sense, but my problem is finding the events in the archive files before importing into iMovie.  Right now I give the archives long names like "<data>, eventName1, eventName2, etc.>".  It would be a little cleaner to have a single archive per event instead.  Being able to select clips would also allow me to not archive clips I don't want, saving space.
It's not a huge deal, it just seems like it would have been easy functionality to add, but I guess it's not high on the priority list.  Maybe next version...

  • Saving or Archiving All Messages in Your Inbox

I'm going to revamp my entire OS & hard drive this weekend, but i want to make sure all my mail is saved. How would I go about saving or archiving all the messages in my inbox so when I finish reinstalling my OS, I can have all my messages saved and upload them back into mail (cause my emails come off the comcast server once I recieve them)

The Mail folder is found in your user folder -- Home/Library/Mail. Copy it, and the com.apple.mail.plist file found in Home/Library/Preferences, and you can restore everything using those two items. The Address Book is found in Home/Library/Applications Support/AddressBook -- copy that if you want to save contacts.

  • How can I change the duration for all clips in iMovie 10.2

How can I change the duration for all clips in iMovie 10.2?  I'm used to working in the older version of iMovie where all I had to do was click on the gear on the clip and change the duration. ALso could use the tool bar to set the duration for all clips. Can't figure out how to do that in this new version. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

In the timeline select the clip whose duration you want to change. Click the adjust button at the top of the viewer and then click the i button and you can set the duration. For multiple clips select them all and in the i button type in the duration you want and it will be applied to all the selected clips. You can also change the duration of a clip in the timeline by putting the cursor over the beginning or end of a clip and dragging. A popup will show the new duration.
