Archive and install and short name

Does archiving and installing let you create a new short name?
Message was edited by: Chasing Shadow

You're in luck: one of the new and less publicized features of Leopard's Accounts pref panel is that it allows you to change an account's short name, home directory, and login shell. Bring up the panel. Authorize by clicking the lock if needed. Now right-click on an account and choose "Advanced Options..." (the only option there is!) You'll get a dialog with text boxes to change all that and some more. And some warnings about being sure you know what you're doing.

  • Can I Change Home Name and Short Name This Way (Safely)?

Tried this question a couple weeks ago and got 0 replies in the Admin/Accounts section, so I'm revising and trying here. Please help!
Let me see if I can make this simple.
Small office environment; 2 Mac (G4's); Airport network. I am admin on both computers. My employee is admin on his computer as well, but not on mine. Each of us has data we use on our own computer but we can access data from the other computer when necessary. We use the same password to login (just for simplicity). My user name is "Joe Smith" and my assistant's is "Bob Lee Brown." His short name is "blb".
My assistant is moving out of town and I'm hiring someone else. I'd like to set up a new user with that person's name ("Jane Jones"). I'd like the entire "Bob Lee Brown" and "blb" off the computer, and have that replaced by "Jane Jones" and "jj" (for a short name) everywhere, for the new assistant. I want to make sure we're still 100% networked when I get done, and that I can still admin both accounts but my new assistant can't admin my computer. In other words, I'd like a clone of what I have now, only with the names changed everywhere.
So - here's the question (in multi-part format):
Should I create a new Admin account on the assistnat's computer, log in as that one and delete the existing one, saving the user prefernces from the deleted user?
In this event, could i take the deleted user file that's saved and import back in all the user preferences - particularly for Word and Entourage?
If this is the right way to go, what would I have to do on my computer to complete the network process? Any keychain issues I'd have to deal with (what and how?)?
Or, should I use ChangeShortName v1.2 (which I've read about in other posts)? Is that safe?
Or should I just tell my new assistant that she's stuck with a he's name and leave well enough alone?
Thanks - been on Macs since 1984, but never had to do this one before and I'm a little concerned I might mess something up without some step-by-step instructions!

I have used ChangeShortName once and it worked fine; a real timesaver. However, I would backup the /Users folder (or the whole drive) and repair permissions first to be on the safe side.

  • Automatic Login Trouble and Short Name Trouble

    Hello everyone,
I just got a fresh install of Leopard going on my Macbook (wiped the hard drive during installation instead of just upgrading the OS), but I'm running into a brick wall (two of them, actually).
First off, for some reason, my Macbook refuses to automatically login. I know this is a good thing in terms of security, but I would really like it to login automatically to save time.
I also made an error in spelling for my computer's home short name, so it is now sitting here with a capitalization problem. I tried to to change the name through Advanced Options in the Accounts section of the System Preferences, but for some reason, the capitalization won't change. I know that's a pretty minor problem, but I'd still like to fix it.
Any help that could be sent my way would be deeply appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Arcturus

If the short name is a problem, reinstall. Changing this name is a nightmare, usually.
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/16620
This will help if you want to try it, but it might fail, or screw things up.
Trashing "com.apple.loginwindow.plist", you may cure the login problem. It's in your User/Library/Preference folder.
Did you Migrate anything? If yes, re-migrate from your backup (You have one, right?).

  • Dynamic class loading problem using unknown JAR archive and directory names

I read the following article, which enlightened me a lot:
    Ted Neward: Understanding Class.forName().
However, it took me some while to understand that my problem is the other way around:
I know the name of the class, I know the name of the method,
but my program/JVM does not know where to load the classes from.
Shortly, my problem is that the server engine that I am writing
uses two different versions of the same library.
So I am trying out the following solution:
    My program is named TestClassPathMain.java
Assume the two libraries are named JAR1.jar and JAR2.jar
and the class/instance method that should
be exposed to TestClassPathMain.java by them is named
    TestClass1.testMethod().
As long as I was depending on just one library,
I put JAR1.jar in the classpath before starting java,
and I was happy for a while.
At the moment I got the need to use another version of
    TestClass1.testMethod() packaged in JAR2.jar,
a call would always access JAR1.jar's
    TestClass1.testMethod().
I then decided to remove JAR1.jar from the classpath,
and programmatically define two separate ClassLoaders, one for use
with JAR1.jar and the other for use with JAR2.jar.
However, the problem is only partly solved.
Please refer to the enclosed code for details.
(The code in the JAR1.jar/JAR2.jar is extremely simple,
it just tells (by hardcoding) the name of the jar it is packaged in
and instantiates another class packaged in the same jar using
the "new" operator and calls a method on it. I don't enclose it.)
    The TestClassPathMain.java/UC1.java/UC2.java code suite was
successfully compiled with an arbitrary of JAR1 or JAR2 in the classpath,
however removed from the classpath at runtime.
(I know that this could have been done (more elegantly...?) by producing an Interface,
but I think the main problem principle is still untouched by this potential lack of elegancy(?))
    1) This problem should not be unknown to you experts out there,
how is it generally and/or most elegantly solved?
The "*** UC2: Variant 2" is the solution I would like best, had it only worked.
    2) And why arent "*** UC2: Variant 2" and
    "*** static UC2: Variant 2" working,
while "*** Main: Variant 2" is?
    3) And a mal-apropos:
Why can't I catch the NoClassDefFoundError?
    The output:
    *** Main: Variant 1 JAR 1 ***:
    Entering TestClass1.testMethod() packaged in JAR1.jar

    2. i need to load the class to the same JVM (i.e. to
the same environment) of the current running
aplication, so that when the loaded class is run, it
would be able to invoke methods on it!!!
ClassLoader(s) do this. Try the URLClassLoader.
(I was talking about relatively esoteric "security"
issues when I mentioned the stuff about Class objects
"scope".) You might use the URLClassLoader kind of
    like this.
    Pseudo-code follows:
    // setup the class loader
    URL[] urls = new URL[1];
    urls[0] = new URL("/path/to/dynamic/classes");
    URLClassLoader ucl = new URLClassLoader(urls);
// load a class & use make an object with the default constructor
    Object tmp = ucl.loadClass("dynamic.class.name").newInstance();
// Cast the object to a know interface so that you can use it.
// This may be used to further determine which interface to cast
// the class to. Or it may simply be the interface to which all
// dynamic classes have to conform in your program.
    InterfaceImplementedByDynamicClass loadedObj =
(InterfaceImplementedByDynamicClass)tmp; It's really not as hard as it sounds, just write a little test of
this and you will see how it works.

  • Best Practice: changing a user's short name?

I administer the OS X Servers and user accounts at my school, where typically a few teachers will come back from the summer having gotten married and changed their names.
We use a standard for usernames of first letter of first name and last name, where Ann Smith is 'asmith' - when she goes and gets married and wants to be 'ajones' at the beginning of this year, what is the best way to go about this change?
Users have network homes, and IMAP email is on a separate server. Here is what I was thinking:
For the user's files, make a new user with their new username, 'ditto' the contents of the old username's home folder to the new username, and chown/chmod the new folder's contents to match the correct permissions.
For the user's mail, use SirAdmin to add ACL's to the old username's mail folders to be able to read them as the new username, have the new username set up their mail and copy the contents of the old username's mail to their new IMAP folder(s).
Does this make sense or is this far too complicated?
Do I just tell these users to log in using their old name and burn their essentials to a DVD and just worry about helping them with their emails?
Any and all suggestions would be appreciated -- thanks
    BC

    Hi Blair
These look like good methods to me and should work. You could consider creating a second short name - something suitable like their first name instead? Enable Mobile Account (PHD) for the affected users and log in using that short name. Their account should now be created locally as well.
If you have only a handful you could use a spare machine to do it with yourself? More on this later.
If you these users have IMAP accounts you could enable POP for them as well. As you/they log in to download from the server their current home folder their mail should be downloaded also.
What you have after that is effectively a back up of their home folders and mail kept locally on a client machine or a designated machine you decided to use. Delete their account, create the new long and short names, create the additional short name (exactly as it was before), log in with those details and upload the locally stored information back to the server. There should be no need to worry about permissions etc.
What you could do is send an email to the affected users outlining the steps they need to take to achieve what you want. Minimal effort with maximum gain.
When you are happy kill the mobile account option as well as deleting the additional short name. Send another mail advising they use the first short name for logging in. There'll be a little tidying up to do in deleting the locally created home folders but you can do this at your leisure using VNC.
I would have in place one of the other methods as well - just in case.

  • Doesn't accept User name + Password after archive and install

I did an archive and install, when finished the install the computer restarted and came up with the login Name + Password screen. I type in every account Name + Password I know and the login window just shakes telling me its wrong. I don't know what to do from this point, I was thinking about reseting the admin password but I'm not sure thats the problem because we have two admin accounts and I know both passwords.
I archive and installed 10.4.0 over 10.4.7. And currently on my backup install of tiger.

I did an archive and install because I had no video, and sometimes could not turn on the IBook. I have had two logic boards that went bad and were fixed free by Apple. When I finished the install the computer restarted and came up with the login Name + Password screen. When I type in Name + Password the login window just shakes telling me its wrong, which it is not.
It is possible that the administrator or other user on the computer were erased at some point when I thought to get rid of unnecessary stuff (mistake!)
I archive and installed 10.2.0 over 10.3.7, because I thought the instructions were to use the original install disk.
I have a backup of the info on this computer on a MacBook Pro that I use all the time, this IBook I only use for email, etc.

  • Transfer User Folder from Archive and Install

I installed Leopard today and did an Archive and Install. It preserved my old user folder, but I can't seem to make it a user. I tried copying it into the user folder and it is now in two places, but does not show up on my login page. All the information is there, I just don't know how to tell Leopard to make that folder a user. Any suggestions? Is this possible? or do I have to transfer all the data manually to a new user I create?
All of the data is on the same drive, so Migration Assistant does not appear to be helpful. Any support is appreciated

Create an account with that short name in the Accounts pane of System Preferences.

  • Archive and Install crashes constantly on second disk

I've had a rough couple of days with my iBook. After a standard security update from Apple, I restarted my iBook, and after typing my password to login, I get a message to the effect of "getty:/dev/console: operation not supported by device." After trying everything possible, and browsing dozens of forums, I decided to Archive and Install off the original OS X disk, just to get it working again. Well, the first time, the install program ran fine, but after logging in, I was stuck with only a blue screen and the pointer and nothing else loaded. So, I tried Install and Archive again, but this time when it asks for the second DVD, it constantly crashes. The log says "PFPackage::packageWithURL - can't instantiate package" followed by the names of various programs (Pages, iWork) it's trying to install. I absolutely cannot quit out of this program. Restarting doesn't work, I can't use Disk Utility. The only thing I can do is let it keep crashing and reopening the Installer. It must be a problem with the disk, but short of getting a new one from Apple, is there anything I can do?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
First of all, exactly which iBook do you have? And which install disc are you using?
I really don't know what is going on here, but I am wondering about the age and health of your hard drive. Is it the original? The average useful life of a hard drive is 3-5 years, and if yours is in this range, it could be having problems.
Do you have a good backup?
Can you eject the disc? If so, maybe you can restart and boot from it again. If you can, navigate to Disk Utility on the disc and see if you can repair your boot disk. If you can, repair both permissions and the disk until there is nothing left to repair. If you find errors you cannot repair, post back with what it is.
    Good luck!

  • Archive and Install/Disc Utility issues -

I'm currently spending a summer abroad in South America, and have had issues with my Macbook Pro (early 2011 version) no longer starting up after some virus experiences last week.  The computer hangs itself during loading on the white screen w/ grey apple and the spinning dial.  In contacts with Apple Care as well as some Mac-saavy friends, the following situations have been tried:
Opening in safe mode - The loading bar (added at the bottom of the grey apple screen) loads about 1/4 of the way, disappears, and the computer hangs itself.
Opening in single user mode - I run the recommended sbin/fsck -fy command to clean up the hard drive.  It comes back after having checked 6-7 parts, saying that the MacHD is in good shape, with a message following saying that something had been "modified" (forgive me for not remembering the correct verbage at present).  I then run the same command again, resulting in a message that the HD is clean and without error.  I then "reboot" and remain hung on the white screen w/ grey apple.
Opening in verbose mode - I reach the following lines of text, and then there is no further progress:
    enable
    IONetworkController::enable
    createMediumTables
    enable end
MacAuthEvent en0   Auth result for: 00:23:cd:1e:f2:c4 No Ack
same line as above saying "Auth timed out" at the end
Command+option+r+p - shock two or three times, (three startup chimes) and computer continues to hang itself in the normal spot.
    - So, at this point I took the advice of Apple Care and a few other friends, and tracked down a "retail copy" of Mac OSX (10.6.3) in order to try to do an Archive and Install or any sort of Disc Utility via the startup disc.
Inserting the disc and holding "c" at startup results in the cd drive whirring the disc for a few moments, and then remaining hung at the same white loading screen.
Holding "option" during the startup gives me the option of loading from the HD, or the disc.  Selecting the disc proceeds to whirr the cd drive, take me to the white loading screen with the grey apple, and... you guessed it... leaves the CPU hung.
My question is then, is my Macbook Pro unable to read this disc and execute Archive and Install/Disc Utility for hardware reasons as per the virus attack, or is the disc not compatible with my version of OSX (which I have since confirmed through my wife to be 10.6.6)?
Different sources have told me different things.  The local AASP in Uruguay sold me what they professed to be the "latest" version of OSX - the 10.6.3, what's more for $55 dollars instead of the lower cost as available in the states (between $15-$30), so I am reluctant to go back to them for advice when they seem more inclined to cash in on my inexperience (Mac owner of less than a month) than actually fixing my issue.  Apple Care told me that a standard "retail disc" should work, but I am assuming now that they believe I can snag the same version as initially came with my Macbook Pro.  Should I be looking to have my wife mail my original OSX install DVDs down here to resolve this problem?  Should 10.6.3-retail be working and is not for reasons I haven't identified?  I have since done some online research and found mentions that doing any sort of HD partitioning or OSX reinstalls can only be accomplished by utilizing a disc of an equal or more recent version of the OSX (examples that 10.4 can't work on a notebook preinstalled with 10.5, etc).  Does this translate to 10.6.3 not being able to function for my 10.6.6 MBP?
Any insight or thoughts would be much appreciated, as essentially all of my schoolwork and assignments are now trapped on an inaccessible HD.  Thank you for your time.

I tried adding in a bunch of information about what your troubleshooting steps meant, but the server went into maintenance while I did. So, here it is again:
"Opening in safe mode - The loading bar (added at the bottom of the grey apple screen) loads about 1/4 of the way, disappears, and the computer hangs itself."
This is FSCK running, and gives you an indication of it's progress.
"MacAuthEvent en0   Auth result for: 00:23:cd:1e:f2:c4 No Ack"
This is either a failed DHCP request or ARP request.
    "Command+option+r+p"
         Command+Option+P+R - Resets PRAM. That's why p+r.
"Inserting the disc and holding "c" at startup results in the cd drive whirring the disc for a few moments, and then remaining hung at the same white loading screen."
This problem indicates that the disc is too old to boot your system. The reason for why this disc cannot boot is because it doesn't contain the necessary drivers for your model MacBook Pro. My mom and brother have similar models, and my brother had similar issues while in Japan. He went and got an install disc as well, which failed, I ended up stepping him through so that it would boot in Safe Mode, and then got it working in Normal Mode remotely.
FYI: Sophos has a free Mac Antivirus program, that is very processing friendly, and will scan in the background. You may wish to consider it as an alternative to Avast! if it continues giving you problems. Though I suspect it may be coincidence that your computer had problems shortly after Avast! cleaned up files. Let me know how it goes. You may wish to open up Disk Utility and check your S.M.A.R.T. Status. You want to make sure it says "Verified" If it doesn't say "Verified" then you have a problem.

  • I need help to recover/relink mail after archive and install

I am helping my friend fix her 15" G4 PowerBook after memory failures caused many crashes. There was no recovering short of a reinstall via "archive and install". All that worked great, but now Mail doesn't recognize the accounts, mailboxes, signatures, etc. that are still located in the user/library/mail folder.
What's up with that? I can't figure out how to relink Mail to this stuff.
    Here's more detail:
    1) After lots of prior debugging (Disk Utility, Disk Warrior, Apple Hardware Test, single-user commands per Apple tech notes), I did the A&I to 10.3.4 from the original disks.
    2) Per Dr. Smoke and The X Lab, I ran the 10.3.9 combo installer right away so that the "older" system would not get confused by the "newer" stuff in the Previous Systems folder.
    3) I Launched Mail and it started anew, i.e. didn't recognize accounts and wanted to start over.
    Thanks for any help.

The account settings are stored in HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist. It looks like that file became corrupt -- maybe its permissions went awry (Disk Utility cannot fix that) and Mail just deleted the file to create a new one.
If your friend doesn't have a backup copy of that file, just set up the accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don't. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in HOME/Library/Mail/ when done.
You'll also have to re-configure most settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it's enabled.

  • Syncing two iPhones with one iTunes account, archive and install

I had a blue screen and had to archive and install.
I re-synched my iPhone and at that time put my iPhone contacts in my address book with
my group name, that I just created. I created a group for her and now want to re-synch her iPhone
with my computer and with my iTunes account, like before. I get a message that the info on that her iPhone is synched with another user account. A choice to merge info from this user account or replace info from this user account. I want to make sure that her contacts go into the address book, under
her group. I don't want to lose her her contacts on the phone, when I re-synch her iphone.

I want to make sure that her contacts go into the address book, under her group. I don't want to lose her her contacts on the phone, when I re-synch her iphone.
You should select the Merge option. If you don't, the existing contact information in the Address Book on your Mac will replace all contact info in her iPhone's address book.

  • Finder crashes, won't let me archive and install

I'm at a complete loss. After installing the latest update to MacOS X, everything is messed up. And it seems unfixable. The finder won't stay open, no matter what user your under, though I can still open everything from the dock. I've tried:
    1. Creating a new user.
    2. Running disk utility, doesn't work.
    3. Repairing permissions, works, but doesn't fix problem.
    4. Running Norton Utilities, doesn't work.
    5. Archiving and Installing, which brings up an error that tells you to try again.
    6. Archiving and installing, without keeping the user file and network settings in tact.
    7. Random other stuff I can't recall (such as some terminal stuff), but didn't work.
Is my only option to try to back this stuff up and reinstall? Do you think that will even work? My mother has a copy of disk warrior that she would have to send me. That's something else I could try, but I'm not sure if it would be worth it. Also, I can still boot up in OS 9.

Hi johnink, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    4. Running Norton Utilities, doesn't work.
This is probably the source of your problem. First of all get rid of Norton, use it for a coaster or a frisbee but not on your Mac! Do not let Norton near your X system, it will hose it!
Norton Disk Doctor is not compatible with OS X 10.4 Tiger. Symantec ceased development of Norton Utilities for Macintosh and Norton SystemWorks for Macintosh 2 years ago. But it has been ruining systems since the intro of X.
You should create a complete backup of your files and erase & re-install the OS.

  • Recovery of lost printers after Archive and Install

    Hi,
I just finished an Archive and Install of Leopard, and I discovered that one of the side-effects of doing this is that my printers are all gone. I sort of expected this, and I have a full system backup of the system I rebuilt, so if all else fails, I can boot off the backup, and print or take notes on the printer settings, and then go back to my active installation of Leopard and re-enter them all. But I'm wondering if there's an easier way. Would anyone know if all of the printer info might be contained in a few discrete sections of the "Previous System" folder that I could just drag into the current system folder to get all of my printers back? I do consulting work at a number of companies, so I have about ten printers that I routinely print to, so it's a bit of a bother to rebuild the list by hand.
    Thanks,
    Ken

Usually, when no additional printer software had been installed into the Mac
(assuming the printers are among the many supported printers already in it)
all you'd have to do in order to use one of those attached or available printers
would be to have them turned on and attached to the computer or the network
they'd normally be accessed through. Unless they require newer driver software.
At times, the choices of available printers would appear in the print setup in an
open application; at others, you may have to go into the setup utility to see if
the printers could be added to the list - pulling drivers from the installed OS X
and putting them into a position to be used, if compatible with the printers there.
The system's installer and updated files available to it include many drivers,
and these are not all turned on by default.
So, if there is no chance of the printers being recognized by the OS X version
you have (assuming archive & install and update) even after being given any
new drivers available through Software Update, you may have to seek out the
latest drivers from the printer manufacturers web site downloads pages.
There may be some other way to make the printers work through the OS; if
they otherwise should appear and be available. Some of the printer setups
& CUPS printing options or settings should be explored if they haven't been.
Although I don't have OS X 10.5.x running in my computers now, I have tried
it and decided to stay awhile longer in 10.4.11; some of the same kinds of
issues can occur, between these slightly different systems. You may be able
to re-use the printer drivers from the Previous System, unless their installer
had an instruction set to put various parts for the printer software in different
locations, in which case, the drag-n-drop may not be suitable to reinstall them.
Hopefully someone with more restore experience (short of manually reinstalling
drivers, if these are not already a part of the OSX and its 10.5 install/updates)
will contribute a bit more and direct you as per the specific demands of Leopard.
    PS:
When you get your system back in order, you may wish to consider making a
full computer drive clone on an externally enclosed FireWire drive unit capable
of booting Mac OS X and running your PPC-based Mac (and also Intel-based)
so that unit may be something in the way of a FW400/800 + USB2.0 drive with
its own AC power adapter. OWC sells a mercury drive enclosure with HDD in it.
That may be a way to avoid doing Archive & Installs + updates; just restore from
a full drive clone and be on your way. And do other backups if needed, too.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Finder not responding after Archive and install

I recently encountered my first problem ever with my mac(new in '05) This is the first mac I have owned; I have worked on G3's and G4's in the past. After reading through many message boards and support pages I don't believe my problem to be similar but different to previous posts.
My problem started off with an OS problem that I was able to diagnose in the "help" book I purchased when Leopard came out. It said I should Archive and Install to remedy the problem and keep my files. I ran the archive the install (it gave me no options to preserve user or network settings). After Archive and install my computer started up alright, but I got the permanent beachball and the finder does not work. it is constantly non responsive. I can relaunch finder, but after it restarts it goes non responsive immediately once again. So I can't actually access my "previous system" folder to move anything over. I checked my dock items and finder, they opened, but my itunes asked for an update. I list of update items came up; I did the non-restart items first. they updated fine, (my itunes old itunes playlists are viewable but not playable now) then I did the items that required a restart. That is when I found out that I could not shut down or restart my computer with std. procedures.
Currently I can only access my spotlight or apple pull down menu if I am in a functioning dock program (safari or itunes, quicktime. etc.) after reading some more support pages it looked like the common thing to do was check permissions and verify disk. I did, I repaired two permissions and the disk was OK. I did look at the HD files, they were as I remembered, but unaccessible (greyed out) and the "previous system" folder was present. +It didn't look like I would expect. The HD looked same as it used to just with a previous system folder.+ After checking the permissions and verified the disk I tried a hard restart. It came back the same as before, unresponsive finder and only the few dock items worked along with spotlight. I checked permissions and disk verify again and everything was OK.
Sorry to be long winded I am trying to be thorough...In short, My finder does not work after doing an Archive and Install to fix my original problem (which has been fixed)...the remedy for an unresponsive finder is to do an archive and install. Is another archive and install really going to fix my problem? Can I archive and install OSX 10.4 and work my way back up to 10.5.6?
Secondly is there a way to restart my computer without doing another hard restart?

It won't let me add a new account. I am locked out and when I try to unlock it gives me the beachball and becomes non responsive after it tries to authenticate.
I looked at the log file, I am not sure what exactly to look for. I am no programer. I see an awful lot of negative wording. I see some errors like "error (-4956) locating menu extra but they are mostly under system preferences...I see some stuff in the loginwindow that says is not a full path... Otherwise, the only reference I see to the finder is when I have force quit the finder.
