Archive and Install crashes constantly on second disk
I've had a rough couple of days with my iBook. After a standard security update from Apple, I restarted my iBook, and after typing my password to login, I get a message to the effect of "getty:/dev/console: operation not supported by device." After trying everything possible, and browsing dozens of forums, I decided to Archive and Install off the original OS X disk, just to get it working again. Well, the first time, the install program ran fine, but after logging in, I was stuck with only a blue screen and the pointer and nothing else loaded. So, I tried Install and Archive again, but this time when it asks for the second DVD, it constantly crashes. The log says "PFPackage::packageWithURL - can't instantiate package" followed by the names of various programs (Pages, iWork) it's trying to install. I absolutely cannot quit out of this program. Restarting doesn't work, I can't use Disk Utility. The only thing I can do is let it keep crashing and reopening the Installer. It must be a problem with the disk, but short of getting a new one from Apple, is there anything I can do?
Welcome to Apple Discussions!
First of all, exactly which iBook do you have? And which install disc are you using?
I really don't know what is going on here, but I am wondering about the age and health of your hard drive. Is it the original? The average useful life of a hard drive is 3-5 years, and if yours is in this range, it could be having problems.
Do you have a good backup?
Can you eject the disc? If so, maybe you can restart and boot from it again. If you can, navigate to Disk Utility on the disc and see if you can repair your boot disk. If you can, repair both permissions and the disk until there is nothing left to repair. If you find errors you cannot repair, post back with what it is.
Good luck!

Failed Archive and Install - Have I lost all my user files?
In another thread I have reported printing problems while running OS 10.4.11 on a Cube http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1401894&tstart=0. Tonight I decided to do an Archive and Install to try to fix the problems. I got a message saying that the installation had failed and that I should try to reinstall. When I did so I was given the option to Archive and Install but the check box for Save Users and Network Settings could not be checked. Rather than trying to reinstall I quit the installer and specified an OS 9 system folder for booting. After booting into OS 9 I examined the Users folder and found no folders corresponding to my two user accounts, only a shared folder. The OS X Applications folder appears to contain all my applications.
It seems that the failed installation erased my user accounts. Is that correct? If so, how can I recover them?
Of course I did a backup of my user files before installing, right? NO!!!! My last backup was eight days ago.
John LinkYes, an Archive and Install will not erase the disk or your files. If you use the option to preserve user accounts and preferences those will be transferred into the newly created system. However, your existing system is a failed installation so if you do another Archive and Install it cannot transfer your user account because it is not in the existing system. Plus you will need sufficient free space on the hard drive for yet another system - about 6-8 GBs.
Once you backup your personal data and your Home folder, I would suggest you just erase the hard drive, reinstall OS X from scratch, then copy your Home folder backup to the newly installed system. These articles, How to get files from a previous home directory after Archive and Install and Mac OS X- How to recover a home folder (directory), explain the process. Although written for an Archive and Install scenario it is essentially the same procedure you would have to follow.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button. -
Finder crashes, won't let me archive and install
I'm at a complete loss. After installing the latest update to MacOS X, everything is messed up. And it seems unfixable. The finder won't stay open, no matter what user your under, though I can still open everything from the dock. I've tried:
1. Creating a new user.
2. Running disk utility, doesn't work.
3. Repairing permissions, works, but doesn't fix problem.
4. Running Norton Utilities, doesn't work.
5. Archiving and Installing, which brings up an error that tells you to try again.
6. Archiving and installing, without keeping the user file and network settings in tact.
7. Random other stuff I can't recall (such as some terminal stuff), but didn't work.
Is my only option to try to back this stuff up and reinstall? Do you think that will even work? My mother has a copy of disk warrior that she would have to send me. That's something else I could try, but I'm not sure if it would be worth it. Also, I can still boot up in OS 9.

4. Running Norton Utilities, doesn't work.
This is probably the source of your problem. First of all get rid of Norton, use it for a coaster or a frisbee but not on your Mac! Do not let Norton near your X system, it will hose it!
Norton Disk Doctor is not compatible with OS X 10.4 Tiger. Symantec ceased development of Norton Utilities for Macintosh and Norton SystemWorks for Macintosh 2 years ago. But it has been ruining systems since the intro of X.
You should create a complete backup of your files and erase & re-install the OS.

Safari 3.1.2 keeps crashing after Archive and Install
I did an archive and install to fix a few problems, but Safari continues to crash. I also tried to reset Safari in the moments before crash.
My homepage barely has time to load before it crashes. I tried to navigate to other sites to see if it was a site-specific problem, but Safari crashes no matter what site.
What other possibilities and options are there?
Please help! At least Firefox works, but even that crashes sometimes.I also tried to Repair Permissions through the Disk Utility. This did not work.
Here is the error report after I repaired Permissions:

Drive crashed-archive and install failed
Intallation of Scanmaker drivers froze. After that my HD won't boot. Ran Disk Utility from the 10.5 install disk. Disk verified as OK. But when I go to verify permissions and/or repair them, I get the message "error: the underlying task reported failure on exit" and I can't do anything else.
Archive and install both with and without saving permissions option fails every time. hELP!
What are my options and what does this error mean?I wish I could say I had been backing up but I have not. Needless to day, I saw the light! I managed to use Disk Warrior to restore the directory on the disk. Luckily I had a second HD for the MacBook--installed that and from there was able to access all the files (undamaged, thank goodness) and copy them back over to the new HD. It was a slow process but it worked. I have time machine on now and will NOT turn it off!!!

Problem with Archive and Install - Second disc won't complete
I'm trying to run an archive and install for my iMac, OS 10.4.11. I get through the first disc fine, but after I put in the 2nd install disc, it gets all the way to the "finishing installation" and then won't move past "running GarageBand Demo Songs Installer Script". it says less than a minute remaining, and the downloading bar is swirling, but there is nothing happening and it hangs here for hours. I've tried reinstalling, but it will only ask me to load the 2nd disk again, and the same thing happens over and over. I even tried a different install disc 2, and the same thing happened. Is there a way to push past this, or start the entire archive and install again? when i reboot to the disc drive with the 1st install disk, it ask me to put in the 2nd disc.
This all started because iTunes was acting up after I got an ipod touch, no prior problems with the computer. Can anyone help?I've seen this reported before. What some have had some success with is to do a custom install so the second disk is not needed. See BDAqua's tip to someone with the same issue in the Tiger forum.

Difference between running Disk Utility and "Archive and Install"
Hi all,
I'm one of the poor souls who is having trouble with the software update 10.4.6. My iMac stopped halfway while doing the update, and when it attempted to do a restart, the iMac froze. I did the mistake of forcing it to shutdown, instead of just letting it take its time.
Last night, I attempted the Safe Boot but it did not work. The progress indicator kept on spinning for hours! SHOULD I TRY IT AGAIN?
Also, can someone tell me the difference between unning Disk Utility and "Archive and Install"? I figure I might have to do one of them to repair my iMac. I just want to do something that will reduce the chances of me wiping out my files. I also have the TechTool Deluxe CD with me. Should I be using that instead?
Please help.i just had a simialr issue with my powerbook. I stress similar, but in the end i had the same issue with the start up screen (light blue, apple icon and the spinning indicator below it. I could not get past it.
I ran disk utility from the boot disk, and got a kernel panic on verifying and and repairing permissions.
So (and this is what Im suggesting you try) in disk utility I made a disk image of my internal hard drive and saved it to an external hard drive. Takes a while but a worthy precaustion.
Second I went ahead and installed the OS on the external drive. Once that was done I boted from the external to oprn the disk image back up of my powerbooks internal drive. After that checked out i wnet back to the boot disk and did a clean install of the OS (wiping the internal) and things were fine after that.
maybe wait and see how other people respond to this before jumping into it, but its smart to back everything up on an external any day.
much luck to you

SuperDrive - Archive and Install/Repair Disk/Permissions Unavailable
Was told by an Apple "Genius" that an Archive and Install would fix the problem I am having with my MBA (shuts down while booting after performing the 10.5.4 update), but that it would take at "least a day or two" for them to fix it so I took it home.
Tried booting to the MBA System Discs and a Leopard disk from the Superdrive, and with both clicking the "Options" button before the install, which on every other Mac displays the "Erase and Install" and "Archive and Install" options, the MBA goes straight to "How would you like to format your drive, Extended or Ext. Journaled" and that is all. The other options do not even appear even though there is at least 40gb available on the drive.
Tried running the DiskUtility from both discs and they only let me Verify Disk and Verify Permissions, both Repairs are greyed out. Both verifications fail without the ability to repair.
I purchased the SD for exactly such a situation thinking it would be easier though it seems that it is for convenience only and of no other actual assistance.
I haven't checked out the Remote Disc though I would not at all be surprised that these features (Archive/Repair) are only accessible through it. Can't wait to try it through my B network.
Anyone know if anything like this is normally possible through the SuperDrive?
Verify Disk reports:
Invalid Node structure
Volume Check failed
Verify Failed
And while typing this, the drive is no longer mountable and reports, "Try running First Aid on it".... how lovely.
Well, I would like to know, at least, if anyone else has experienced any similar problems. Erase and Install is the last thing I want to do, but if that doesn't work than I'm taking it back in. Sounds like the drive itself is damaged.

After Archive and Install, there is less room on disk
I recently had to do an archive and install from my Mac OS X Disc 1 & 2, and I new it would take up between 10 and 15GB of Disk space, but I can't figure out how to clean up the disk so I have the amount of space I had before the archive and install. I recently had 59.8 GB, after the archive and install I have 50.08. Any suggestions?
Hi Tha Shiz, Welcome to Apple's Users Help Users Forums.
When you do an A & I you create a 'Previous System Folder.' I suspect that's the difference.
You can keep that for a while till you are sure that everything is OK.

After Archive and Install 10Gb of disk space has disappeared!
I was having various minor problems which I have mentioned elsewhere and out of shear frustration I decided to stop wasting any more time and do an Archive and Install - preserving accounts etc.
After the subsequent Software Updates I was horrified to see that my main disk was 10Gb down on what it had been just prior to doing the installation. It was moreso because unlike the original installation I had not installed all the Languages, Fonts and Printers which I would not be using, so I hoped to gain some space - not lose it.
Anybody any ideas where this drive space has gone?
And please nobody suggest the Previous Systems folder - I dealt with that.Alf Megson wrote:

yes. I had to ask. I don't know you and I've seen way too many posts by people with similar problems who don't know that one has to empty trash to actually reclaim the missing space.
Boot from the leopard install DVd and repair the startup drive (not permissions). reboot and see if that makes a differences. if not try to find out what's taking all the space. see this post for tools for that.

10GB should not be hard to find. -
Archive and Install, Does it format the whole disk
If I ran an archive and install on my macbook, would it give me the option to reformat and repartition the entire hard disk, or only the volume where Leopard is currently installed. So if i have three partitions on my hard drive right now, one Leopard, one Ubuntu and one swap, and I did an archive and install, would it wipe out all three of those partitions and just make one big Mac partition again?

no. archive and install is done on one partition only and that partition has to have os x installed. in any event it won't touch any other partitions. that's true for any kind of install you do. there is disk utility on the leopard install dvd and you can use it to reformat and repartition the entire drive if you want but the installer itself doesn't do that. -
Upgrade, or Archive and Install? Disk space?
I'm thinking of upgrading to Tiger soon because I want those shadows I make in Pages to show up on PDFs. But before I do give up my money for the disc, I've got a few questions, just to make sure every thing goes as planned:
- Upgrade or Archive and Install? I seem to remember back in the old days when there was mayhem with Upgrade when that option was first introduced (in Jaguar?). Is Upgrade reliable now?
- If I do Upgrade, how much additional disk space do I need (I have Panther on my PowerBook right now)? I know Apple says 3GB on its website, but that's only for a clean install, right?
- If I do Archive and Install, how much disk space will I need (including the Previous System folder)?
PowerBook G4 (Gigabit Ethernet, 667MHz) Mac OS X (10.3.9)Hi Kim!
Here is some additional information.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, FastMac, etc.
As Gulliver posted, be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
The discs should look like the images in the above links.

Tiger Archive and Install Using External Disk for Archive?
Any way to do an archive and install by moving the saved stuff to an external usb drive? My 10.4.3 install disk is offering me only erase and install, I was updated to 10.4.8 and quite invested with software, etc., would really like to at least try archive and install, but of course the main drive is too full for that.
As an alternative, is there any way to use single user mode command line to locate and move files before doing the erase and install?
Finally, I gather I cannot boot os 9 with my mini. Is there any workaround for that?
Thanks for any help.
Jud> One of the unexplained mysteries to me is what users are supposed to do about iTunes libraries?
Create and maintain a backup saved to an external drive or media (used for backup purposes only) as should be done with all other data that is important to you - for this very reason and for other important reasons. It isn't a matter of if but when your hard drive has a partial or complete failure since none last forever.
Since an iPod can be accessed/used via Disk mode as with any other external drive, many use their iPod for backup purposes which is a big mistake IMO since this isn't what an iPod is designed for. There are ways to retrieve music from an iPod but if you have your iPod preferences to automatically launch iTunes and update with iTunes and/or don't have Disk mode enabled, it makes it much more difficult if not impossible.
Do you have access to another Mac that supports being connected to another Mac via Firewire Target Disk mode? If so, you can connect your Mini to another Mac this way to retrieve your data and then you should probably consider reformatting the drive (which completely erases the drive) and then re-install Tiger and all software. -
Finder not responding after Archive and install
I recently encountered my first problem ever with my mac(new in '05) This is the first mac I have owned; I have worked on G3's and G4's in the past. After reading through many message boards and support pages I don't believe my problem to be similar but different to previous posts.
My problem started off with an OS problem that I was able to diagnose in the "help" book I purchased when Leopard came out. It said I should Archive and Install to remedy the problem and keep my files. I ran the archive the install (it gave me no options to preserve user or network settings). After Archive and install my computer started up alright, but I got the permanent beachball and the finder does not work. it is constantly non responsive. I can relaunch finder, but after it restarts it goes non responsive immediately once again. So I can't actually access my "previous system" folder to move anything over. I checked my dock items and finder, they opened, but my itunes asked for an update. I list of update items came up; I did the non-restart items first. they updated fine, (my itunes old itunes playlists are viewable but not playable now) then I did the items that required a restart. That is when I found out that I could not shut down or restart my computer with std. procedures.
Currently I can only access my spotlight or apple pull down menu if I am in a functioning dock program (safari or itunes, quicktime. etc.) after reading some more support pages it looked like the common thing to do was check permissions and verify disk. I did, I repaired two permissions and the disk was OK. I did look at the HD files, they were as I remembered, but unaccessible (greyed out) and the "previous system" folder was present. +It didn't look like I would expect. The HD looked same as it used to just with a previous system folder.+ After checking the permissions and verified the disk I tried a hard restart. It came back the same as before, unresponsive finder and only the few dock items worked along with spotlight. I checked permissions and disk verify again and everything was OK.
Sorry to be long winded I am trying to be thorough...In short, My finder does not work after doing an Archive and Install to fix my original problem (which has been fixed)...the remedy for an unresponsive finder is to do an archive and install. Is another archive and install really going to fix my problem? Can I archive and install OSX 10.4 and work my way back up to 10.5.6?
Secondly is there a way to restart my computer without doing another hard restart? It won't let me add a new account. I am locked out and when I try to unlock it gives me the beachball and becomes non responsive after it tries to authenticate.
I looked at the log file, I am not sure what exactly to look for. I am no programer. I see an awful lot of negative wording. I see some errors like "error (-4956) locating menu extra but they are mostly under system preferences...I see some stuff in the loginwindow that says is not a full path... Otherwise, the only reference I see to the finder is when I have force quit the finder.

OS hangs frequently after Archive and Install
My iBook tried to startup with no video (hung at the gray screen with the apple logo) so I performed an Archive and Install. The iBook does start up now and almost works functionally. The problem is that it it constantly going in to a hang mode (spinning wheel) making it difficult to perform any in any applications including the Finder. It hangs with a spinning wheel for about 45 seconds of every minute ro so.
I saw the Previous System folder is there something in there that I can do to work this glitch out? Maybe something needs to be copied over form the Previous System Folder to the new System Folder? Any help?
Mac OS X 10.4Locate com.apple.finder.plist. Toss it, and restart. If this fails, do basic repairs with Disk Utility. Also use Disk Warrior if you have it.
Any reason you do not have a backup?
