Archive and Install - Deleted user - Itunes library?

I had to do an archive and install and discovered problems with my user name that necessitated creating a new identity. Later I deleted that identity
I have the library backed up and have moved it to a shared user but the library is not displayed. Everything is correctly checked.
The reason is probably since the library was created with my previous name - now deleted.
How can I get this library recognized by itunes in my new user name?
Thanks in advance

Sorry, but I can't really follow the last posts you made. What I can tell you is that in a normal situation itunes creates a itunes folder in that folder is the music library (which contains all of the actual music files, as well as the files that itunes uses to organize that library, and store any information about playlists and playcount etc. All of the files itunes needs are contained in this single itunes folder. You can instruct itunes to move the location of the music folder (containing all of the actual music files) and still have it using the database files that are in your user account, but that just makes it harder to share the library. If you've changed this basically what you need to do is go into itunes and tell it the location of the music folder is in the itunes folder which contains the xml files, then do a consolidate library so it copies all of the music into that folder, and references the files in that folder. At that point you can move that entire itunes folder wherever you want, and do the start itunes with the option key and point to that library. You can do the same from other computers and point to the same itunes folder and they will all access and make changes to that central folder then. You will only be able to access that central library from one computer at a time though. If itunes is running on another computer accessing that library you won't be able to access it from a different computer, until you shut down itunes on the first computer.

    HELP?

Perhaps you should try reinstalling Photoshop and Nisus Writer, but first be sure you completely uninstall them:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Most applications create preference files which are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can located them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
    AppZapper
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at www.versiontracker.com or www.mackupdate.com.

  • Archive and Install misses-Some-applications ( ? )

Amidst two efforts of Archiving and reinstalling I have been amazed at two consistencies . One is that the routinely running iTunes , i.e. working like a Swiss Clock , disappears and the Address Book remains among the missing .
The missing Address Book is the reason for the flurry of Archiving and Installing , so I am inclined to accept that as less surprising that it remains unusable . However , thanks to a stand alone down load , I can recover my iTunes application from Apple Computer .
This somehow strikes me as odd that an other wise happy Operating System will Ostracise first an Address Book then Strike another application after being "Restored" .
What gremlins pursue in my Address Book remains a secret , but by piling Mount Ossa on top of Olympus , then Mount Pelion on top of Ossa , so to speak , What can the meaning of my Archive and install twice removing iTunes be ?
Having purchased Pacifist I had entertained high hopes that this parsing of the install Disc would provide a substantive fix in replacing the "Missing" applications . I say "Missing" because they are right there according to my lying eyes and Get Info .
All ideas entertained until the cows come home , Frederick

In the interest of saving space, can I trash the app folder from my previous system?
    Yes.
What else can I safely trash from the previous system without compromising my data?
Anything which was reinstalled. That folder is left there partially so that any files you may have added to the previous system can be restored.

  • Blank iTunes library after Archive and Install

My PowerBook G4 suffered a catastrophic crash and after advice from Apple support, the only way I could restart it was to perform an Archive and Install. Before this, I couldn't start the machine and therefore couldn't back anything up. Everything seems to be all right after the Archive and Install except that my iTunes library is completely blank, and the old library is not anywhere on the hard drive. All of the songs are still on my iPod - is there any way to get them back into the library? I don't want to connect the iPod and lose everything I have now.
    Thanks!

Prevent iPod from automatically updating when you connect it to your computer
Command-Option as you connect the iPod to your computer (hold the keys down until the iPod appears in the iTunes Source list)
After that, use an application like Senuti or iPodRip (latest versions on versiontracker.com) to transfer the contents of your iPod to the computer.

  • Files missing from library after archive and install

    Hi forum folk
any help you could give would be much appreciated.
I can't seem to verify my permissions on HD. I have run disk utility both from finder and from my OSX startup disk and consistently get the error message "Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue." I then reinstalled the operating system all together making sure to archive and install as well as archive previous network and preference settings. This means I am running 10.3.4 at the moment (and I can't verify any of the software updates at the moment). After reinstalling I still cannot verify my permissions, so now I am trying to back up all my files so that I can reinstall the OSX again, erase everything, and start from scratch. But I'm running into some very strange problems while doing this. select files are missing from ~/library. there is no Safari file, for example. I tried looking in HD/previous systems/library where my library files were saved before I reinstalled the operating system but there is no such folder in there either. this means all of my bookmarks are gone. additionally, under library/preferences (in both the old and new library folders) there is no file named com.apple.itunes.plst. so all of my itunes playlists are gone as well. these are the only missing files I have found thus far and i can't explain why they selectively would not have been saved after the archive and install. Everything else seems to be intact. Any ideas?
    thanks

    jbeep:
my HD has a capacity of 8.85 GB available. When I reinstalled panther I had little more than 3 GB available (I deleted a bunch of unneeded things since then)
Thanks for this update. What is the total formatted capacity of your HDD? I ask because I suspected that you might be cutting it pretty close. The rule of thumb is that you should have 10-15% of your total capacity available as free space. My personal rule is 15%-20%. This allows for more efficient perfomrance of OS X.
I am in the process of backing up everything on my seagate combo USB 2.0/firewire 200 GB external (I am using the firewire cord)
Having an up-to-date backup is one of the primary rules, often observed more in the breach than not. Since you have an HDD that supports Firewire, I suggest that you make a bootable clone of your entire HDD using SuperDuper. You can then use this backup as an emergency boot drive. However, it must be Firewire, as PPC Macs don't boot from USB devices.
I also have heard that it is advisable to reinstall the OS "every now and again" and I hadn't done this for at least two years. was I ill-advised?
Most experienced Mac users never re-install, except under dire circumstances. Since installing my new HDD in this computer I have never re-installed. Re-installation is the utlimate intrusive measure, and it exposes one to all kinds of issues, from lost data, to flawed installaton, to installations that fail midstream. Re-installation is not an effective maintenace procedure. Here are some helpful links in terms of maintenance:
Mac OS X 10.3/10.4: System maintenance
    Macintosh OS X Routine Maintenance
    Maintaining OS X.
I'm going to restart now and try and verify my permissions again using the procedure on the above link. I'll let you know what happens.
Instead of verifying permissions, just go ahead and Repair Disk Permissions. Verifying permissions does nothing, and wastes your time, as it is difficult to tell whether you need to repair, and you have to repair anyway.
Do post back with an update of your progress and any further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • "Lost" library following Archive and Install

After various Leopard crashing issues, it was necessary for me to re-install Leopard on my G5 Imac. I used the “Archive and Install” option but, for reasons I don’t understand, I wasn’t able to use the “Preserve Users and Network Settings”.
After re-installing iLife 08, I’ve now lost my iPhoto and iTunes libraries. Whilst I did back-up both libraries to an external hard drive, the last back up was back in November so I would like to recover the newer photos. I have searched through the “Previous System” folder and have found an “iPhoto Library” file. This is 8Gb big so, presumably, it contains all my photos. I don’t know how to restore the library back into iPhoto, however.
The thing I don’t understand is that this “iPhoto Library” seems to be a single file rather than a folder that you can drill down into and locate all the photos (as it is on my external drive following my manual back-up). Please tell me it’s possible to restore the library (and all albums, events etc) from this single file!
    All help gladly received.

    Pilgrim Tim
With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Unix Style Package File. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
I have searched through the “Previous System” folder and have found an “iPhoto Library” file.
Drag it to your PICTURES folder and launch iPhoto. That should find everything.
Please tell me it’s possible to restore the library (and all albums, events etc) from this single file!
You cannot return to the old iPhoto Library Folder system. Period. There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Syncing two iPhones with one iTunes account, archive and install

I had a blue screen and had to archive and install.
I re-synched my iPhone and at that time put my iPhone contacts in my address book with

I want to make sure that her contacts go into the address book, under her group. I don't want to lose her her contacts on the phone, when I re-synch her iphone.
You should select the Merge option. If you don't, the existing contact information in the Address Book on your Mac will replace all contact info in her iPhone's address book.

  • Multiple iTunes Libraries after an Archive and Install

I recently did an archive and install. I have virtually no disk space left now.
For instance I have an iTunes Library in my Previous System folder that is 11.88 GB and now I also have an iTunes library in my current set up that is 11.33 GB.
I would think these folders are duplicates, so why might the newer Library be a smaller size?
In short, what files and folders can I trash in my Previous System folder so I can reclaim my Hard Drive?

  • Doesn't accept User name + Password after archive and install

I did an archive and install, when finished the install the computer restarted and came up with the login Name + Password screen. I type in every account Name + Password I know and the login window just shakes telling me its wrong. I don't know what to do from this point, I was thinking about reseting the admin password but I'm not sure thats the problem because we have two admin accounts and I know both passwords.
I archive and installed 10.4.0 over 10.4.7. And currently on my backup install of tiger.

I did an archive and install because I had no video, and sometimes could not turn on the IBook. I have had two logic boards that went bad and were fixed free by Apple. When I finished the install the computer restarted and came up with the login Name + Password screen. When I type in Name + Password the login window just shakes telling me its wrong, which it is not.
It is possible that the administrator or other user on the computer were erased at some point when I thought to get rid of unnecessary stuff (mistake!)
I archive and installed 10.2.0 over 10.3.7, because I thought the instructions were to use the original install disk.
I have a backup of the info on this computer on a MacBook Pro that I use all the time, this IBook I only use for email, etc.

  • No User accounts after Archive and Install ?

Today I tried to salvage a 20" iMac G5 for a friend. He had done something that screwed up his hard drive. Disk Utility Disk Repair run of the startup partition always failed. Using an external FW disk, I was able to use Disk Utility Repair successfully, but drive would still not boot. Decided Archive and Install was the right way to go, did that and everything seemed OK but I found I could not log in to his account. Thought it was just a lost password, so tried using the OSX Tiger Install DVD to Reset Password. His *Macintosh HD* Startup drive shows only the "root" user available, neither of the two previous user account names appear.
I can think of nothing to do to recover except an Erase & Install (I have his User files saved). Is there an alternative?
I would assume performing another Archive & Install would yield the same result.

I continued work on this issue today. First, I checked and the three User account folders were present in the Users folder along with the one new account created as part of the Mac OSX Tiger A&I. For some reason, not one of these 4 was accessible from the Login screen; it acted exactly if there were no user accounts.
Purchased and installed DiskWarrior 4 on the FW drive and rebuilt the directory of the iMac's internal drive. Ran all other tests available w/ DW. Still no joy on logging in. I should NOT have had to see the Login screen at all if the new user had been created properly.
Punted. Copied everything I thought I would need to the external drive, then did an Erase & Install of OS X Tiger. Applied all updates, no problems logging in. Copied all the original User/username files and folders and restored a few apps.
Finally, after much wasted time, I have all but one App running and all data files, folders, pics, music restored.
Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 fails because I apparently failed to save a .plist file somewhere and now I learn too late that PE 3.0 will not install on a 10.4.x system. Sigh.

  • Transfer User Folder from Archive and Install

I installed Leopard today and did an Archive and Install. It preserved my old user folder, but I can't seem to make it a user. I tried copying it into the user folder and it is now in two places, but does not show up on my login page. All the information is there, I just don't know how to tell Leopard to make that folder a user. Any suggestions? Is this possible? or do I have to transfer all the data manually to a new user I create?
All of the data is on the same drive, so Migration Assistant does not appear to be helpful. Any support is appreciated

  • How can I add users after archive and install

    Hi Gang,
I had a crash on Sunday and had to do an archive and install to get this computer back up and running.
    It's a PowerBook G4 and I am running 10.4.
I reinstalled from my OS X 10.4 disc. After the install, the Login screen had none of my families user names. I had to go back to the disc and create a new password for a System Administrator.
    I did a software update to OS X 10.11.
I am in now and can see the "Users" folder with everyone in it, but I can't figure out how to move it back into the system.
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    Tom

    Hi Gang,
If you go to "Users" in System Preferences, and add the user with the same name, it found the user and asked me if I wanted to import the data.
    It worked beautifully.
    Thanks,
    Tom

I'm a Pro Tools user, who just did an "Archive and Install" installation of 10.5.8 over my 10.4.11 on my 2 Ghz G5, now Pro Tools won't launch.  I checked the extensions folder and sure enough, the digidesign extensions were left behind.  Can I revert back to the "Archive" of my 10.4.11 System from the "Previous Systems" folder?  If not, what's the point of creating the "archive"?

Did you select "Preserve User Settings"?
Archive and Install installation automatically moves existing system files to a folder named Previous System, then installs Mac OS X again. (See tip 3.) You cannot start up your computer using a Previous System folder, nor can you "re-bless" the Previous System folder. (See tip 1.)
You can choose to preserve your user and network settings before installing. This option automatically moves existing users, Home directories, and network settings. This also skips the Setup Assistant after installation.
Note: Because the "Preserve user and network settings" option moves, not copies, existing users, Home directories, and network settings, from the Previous Systems folder to the newly installed System, these items will not exist in the Previous Systems folder after the Archive and Install is complete.

BTW, it is never recommended to do a major OS change without having a full, bootable backup.

  • Problem Deleting Previous System after Archive and Install

Earlier in my time with this wonderful iMac, I did an Archive and Install to try and resolve a slight problem. I read all the docs beforehand and knew it would save the previous system in its own folder and saw that I could likely delete that folder afterwards.
I have waited months since then, (almost forgotten about this folder) but have never had reason to want anything there, so today decided to delete it.
I dragged the entire previous system folder to trash and tried to empty trash. It deleted most of the stuff, but kept one package DownloadReader7.pkg complaining of locked files.
I have used Pacificist to look at the contents of this package and it says it is a receipt. It contains elements of Adobe Reader Download Manager.app
I have looked on my present working system and can not find an equivalent.
    So two questions...
    1. Is it safe to delete this package (if I knew how)?
    2. If it is safe to delete it, HOW do I, when it appears to have locked elements when I try to empty trash?

It's safe to delete any files in the PSF.
Usually all you need do is press the OPTION key before selecting Empty Trash. If that doesn't work the next thing to try is restart the computer after you've dragged the file to the Trash. If neither works then visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on resolving Trash problems.
