Archive and install didn't wipe away apps. Normal?

I did an archive and install. To my knowledge, I thought it would wipe the OS and apps from my system but preserve my user and network settings. To my surprise I still have all my apps when the computer rebooted. The OS reinstalled but that's about it. Are my apps supposed to be preserved?

User stuff includes all apps.

  • Archive and install is taking forever-is this normal?

Due to ongoing problems with spinning beach balls on my Intel iMac (see my post here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1413753&tstart=0), I decided to just archive and install late last night to see if that would help. Ten hours later, the install is still going ... and it's telling me there are more than 11 hours to go! (As I type this, on my old iMac G3, it's 61% done writing files.) This is a bare-bones reinstall, mind you—just the system and some HP printer drivers.
As I stated in the other post, my RAM is maxed out, and neither Disk Utility nor DiskWarrior have been finding any disk/directory/permissions problems (S.M.A.R.T. status consistently shows up as Verified). Apple Hardware Test hasn't turned up anything either, though I haven't let it run in extended mode; PRAM/SMU resets don't seem to have made a difference.
Obviously, something isn't right ... any ideas? Could the hard drive be on the verge of buying the farm despite indications otherwise? Could the RAM be bad? (It's from OWC, by the way.) Or could the motherboard or power supply be about to crap out?

I don't know what you are doing, but to erase the drive:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button.

  • Archive and Install...the aftermath

I recently performed an archive and install. I checked the option to "Preserve home user and network settings", so all of my documents, pictures, movies, music, user settings, iTunes/iPhoto libraries, internet favourites, address book contacts et cetera were RIGHT where I left them after the procedure, which was handy. However, certain things (library files, and duplicates of Mac OS X applications) are now in the "Previous System" folder. Certain articles I have come across online lead me to believe that I can delete this folder. But I'm not so sure I've got everything back yet. Here's my question:
Certain widgets that I have installed that didn't come with OS X are missing, because they are in
    Previous System/Library/Widgets
    as opposed to
    /Library/Widgets
When I tried moving them, it failed, because it said that the folder "Widgets" can't be modified. The dialogue box gave me the option to Authenticate (rather than just clicking OK), but when I clicked Authenticate, nothing happened (and I do mean nothing). Is this just a quirk? Do have to simply download the widgets from the web again? Or is something else wrong?

you might be able to use Terminal and UNIX commands to migrate files from the archived System, but I think it's safer to reinstall any missing/non-functional apps. While most are standalone and easy to find the needed files, some may have special file locations that aren't obvious and you might miss them, the original installer will put all the app's supporting files in the correct locations.
For example: WireTap Pro contains an .app in your Applications folder, but also needs a kernel extension somewhere in the System folder. If you did an archive and install this would wipe out the kernel extension and the .app would no longer work. Who knows how every single .app/Widget stores their needed files? If one is missing and doesn't work, just reinstall it.
Maybe in the event that the installed .app is not available on disc or the internet, then you have no other option but to go digging in the archived System and pull out all the bits and pieces to try to get it working again. I would wait to delete the archived System until you know you have all your existing third-party apps working again, just to be safe.

  • Archive and Install, Does it format the whole disk

If I ran an archive and install on my macbook, would it give me the option to reformat and repartition the entire hard disk, or only the volume where Leopard is currently installed. So if i have three partitions on my hard drive right now, one Leopard, one Ubuntu and one swap, and I did an archive and install, would it wipe out all three of those partitions and just make one big Mac partition again?

no. archive and install is done on one partition only and that partition has to have os x installed. in any event it won't touch any other partitions. that's true for any kind of install you do. there is disk utility on the leopard install dvd and you can use it to reformat and repartition the entire drive if you want but the installer itself doesn't do that.

  • After Archive and Install, will I lose all my contacts and apps?

I recently had to do an Archive and Install of OS-X 10.4 and I'm in the process of getting everything up to date.
I need to know if after this process when I try to sync my iPhone if I will lose all my contacts, music, and/or apps?
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you,
    Matt

    Hi JTatro
An Arhive and Install will keep your documents, photos, files, etc, in a folder called previous system, so no, you won't lose them.
But to be safer still, it would be even better to backup these precious files to another location, like to DVD or another drive.
If this answered your question, please consider awarding stars.

Still got the same error when rebooting
    3) Ran software update and updated Daylight savings, some security patches, Java, etc.
    4) On reboot I still get this error about the Transport Monitor/shared library
    HELP?

Perhaps you should try reinstalling Photoshop and Nisus Writer, but first be sure you completely uninstall them:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Most applications create preference files which are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can located them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
    AppZapper
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at www.versiontracker.com or www.mackupdate.com.

  • I need help to recover/relink mail after archive and install

I am helping my friend fix her 15" G4 PowerBook after memory failures caused many crashes. There was no recovering short of a reinstall via "archive and install". All that worked great, but now Mail doesn't recognize the accounts, mailboxes, signatures, etc. that are still located in the user/library/mail folder.
What's up with that? I can't figure out how to relink Mail to this stuff.
    Here's more detail:
    1) After lots of prior debugging (Disk Utility, Disk Warrior, Apple Hardware Test, single-user commands per Apple tech notes), I did the A&I to 10.3.4 from the original disks.
    2) Per Dr. Smoke and The X Lab, I ran the 10.3.9 combo installer right away so that the "older" system would not get confused by the "newer" stuff in the Previous Systems folder.
    3) I Launched Mail and it started anew, i.e. didn't recognize accounts and wanted to start over.
    Thanks for any help.

The account settings are stored in HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist. It looks like that file became corrupt -- maybe its permissions went awry (Disk Utility cannot fix that) and Mail just deleted the file to create a new one.
If your friend doesn't have a backup copy of that file, just set up the accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don't. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in HOME/Library/Mail/ when done.
You'll also have to re-configure most settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it's enabled.

  • Finder crashes, won't let me archive and install

I'm at a complete loss. After installing the latest update to MacOS X, everything is messed up. And it seems unfixable. The finder won't stay open, no matter what user your under, though I can still open everything from the dock. I've tried:
    1. Creating a new user.
    2. Running disk utility, doesn't work.
    3. Repairing permissions, works, but doesn't fix problem.
    4. Running Norton Utilities, doesn't work.
    5. Archiving and Installing, which brings up an error that tells you to try again.
    6. Archiving and installing, without keeping the user file and network settings in tact.
    7. Random other stuff I can't recall (such as some terminal stuff), but didn't work.
Is my only option to try to back this stuff up and reinstall? Do you think that will even work? My mother has a copy of disk warrior that she would have to send me. That's something else I could try, but I'm not sure if it would be worth it. Also, I can still boot up in OS 9.

Hi johnink, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    4. Running Norton Utilities, doesn't work.
This is probably the source of your problem. First of all get rid of Norton, use it for a coaster or a frisbee but not on your Mac! Do not let Norton near your X system, it will hose it!
Norton Disk Doctor is not compatible with OS X 10.4 Tiger. Symantec ceased development of Norton Utilities for Macintosh and Norton SystemWorks for Macintosh 2 years ago. But it has been ruining systems since the intro of X.
You should create a complete backup of your files and erase & re-install the OS.

  • After "Archive and Install", my printer no longer works

    Powerbook 1.67 GHz PowerPC G4
    Mac OS X Version 10.4.11
I recently had some issue with my password, so the Apple Genius people ran an archive and install, reset the user password, and got me back to my original state. However, I've had to run all these updates now, and can't figure out how to get the printer to work again. It worked perfectly fine before the archive and install, it was recognized right away.
    I have tried the following:
I uninstalled and then reinstalled the printer software (Epson Stylus CX6000) from the installer CD. Didn't work. Unplugged and turned off power, then re-plugged and restarted everything. Didn't work. I have no idea what to do here. I downloaded any new updates to the software from the Epson website. Didn't work. Help?

If the correct printer driver is missing, and the Print selection
box says Any Printer, it may be unable to use that one.
See if the printer can be used in a different user account.
Sometimes if the system is messed up (even pros do it)
there may be a way to see if the issue is system wide or
if it is based in a problem in the admin user account.
Some optional printer drivers may be available at the printer
manufacturer's web site for downloads. Sometimes there is
a newer one for the entire class of printer models, and so
it may be for yours. Or there is GimpPrint/GutenPrint for
other drivers; their web page shows supported printers.
{Since you state that you've tried other driver options, then
you may have to consider doing a new 'archive & install'
and be sure everything is done right, and then update it.
    Or an all new installation on a wiped empty hard drive.}
There should be a printer error log accessible through Console
and perhaps it may shed some light on the basic problem...
PS: Is this printer an Ethernet and USB printer? If so, have
you tried whatever other connection/cable to see if it works
when running on the other available protocol? The Ethernet
printer would use an IP address or hardware MAC address
and the appropriate cable, if the printer supports both.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Archive and Install issue(s)

    Good Evening,
I have owned my Macbook now for a little over a year and used it primarily for personal use, which would equal maybe an hour or two per day on this Mac. Just last week my Mac shut down for no reason so I turned it back on and thats when the trouble began. When I turned it on the gray screen came up with the apple logo as normal... then the little circle ticker starts going as it "loads" and "thinks" at start up, well it continues to think and then after about 5 minutes or so the computer shuts down and starts again with out me doing anything.
Out of sheer frustration and uncertainity of what to do I took it to Apple. The tech at the Genius bar was very helpful, ran diagnostics, etc. The good news was he could see everything thats on my hard drive so he said my hard drive wasn't completely shot... so he sent me home with instructions on how to do an "Archive and Install" which would grab all of my documents from my hard drive, put them to the side in a folder and then wipe my computer clean and reinstall my OS. I started this procedure and per the tech's notes he said it oculd take 2-3 hours for it to complete which it did. Then as the Archive and Install is down to its last 2 minutes of work I noticed it was "stuck" at the 2 minute mark and I could hear it keep trying to read the cd software. After it being stuck at 2 minutes for about an hour it finally stopped and gave me an error reading as follows:
"Install Failed" "Installer could not install some files in "/Volumes/MacIntosh HD"
    "Contact Software Manufacturer for assistance"
It then gave me the option to restart and try again but I didn't b/c I am afraid I have already wiped my computer of all of my pictures and documents.
Can someone PLEASE help me with this? I take such great care of my laptop and for it to only be a year old with an issue like this leaves me very unhappy. The tech at the Genius bar said hard drives can die within 2-3 years which to me is a crock of sh** as I have had my Toshiba for 8 years and never ONCE had an issue like this and its the same hard drive that came with it. The price I paid for my fully loaded 13 inch Unibody MacBook to have this happen a year later is just unacceptable.

    Hi beccal18,
I've seen three situations that cause this issue:
1.) The disc is bad and will need to be replaced
2.) The HD is failing the pre-install disk verification
3.) The RAM is failing the pre-installation verification
Regarding the HD comment, regrettably it's one of those unknown variables. I have Dell that is celebrating it's 10th birthday in a few weeks and it's all original (under the hood), even the power supply and it's used everyday. I've had some machines that have had their HDs fail within the first few weeks and I've even had some that are DOA right out of the box. So the Genius and his comment was pretty much spot on.
Also, did you purchase AppleCare to properly protect your investment that you paid a fair amount for? If so, whatever component(s) need to be replaced to ensure properly functionality, Apple will take care of it all.

  • Getting My Mac Book Pro in Order Post Archive and Install

    Hi there,
My 17" Macbook Pro recently closed down on me, giving me three longs beeps and not starting up again. I archived and installed, for the first time ever, and was relieved when my Mac bumped back into life with all of my work and apps stashed away in 'Previous Systems'. I then embarked on going through 'Disk Utility' to create a disk image of the preserved work (I was following advice from the Mac support site) but the down load process was so slow I gave up and have resorted to sorting through the previous system manually and dragging info across into the new setup. I am completely green to this and have no idea if I am doing the right thing?
However, I also have some issues:
My spotlight search does not work, I type in a search item then get the spinning wheel, and spotlight closes down?
I want to reset my mail to just the way it was, with all my old sent and received messages. I can't even get mail to work, I get:
The server error encountered was: The server “[email protected]” cannot be contacted on port 110.
    Any advice here?
I am running OSX 10.5 and I tried to do the hardware test but the computer told me it cannot be run on this computer??
    Thanks in advance
    James

Your profile says you have a Powerbook, and yet your question is regarding a MacBook Pro. MacBook Pros and Powerbooks are totally different machines on the inside. If the issue is with the MacBook Pro, you need the MacBook Pro installer discs to run the hardware test. If it is with a Powerbook, then you need the Powerbook installer discs. If you have the correct discs according to this, it may be your firmware installation at one point failed. That's sometimes the reason for the three long tones. Here's a guide to the tones at startup on Intel Macs (MacBook Pros):
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2538?viewlocale=en_US
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2341
    And PowerPC Macs (Powerbooks):

  • Archive and Install/ original settings

I keep having various problems with my G5. I want to archive and install again. I want the original settings/default settings for everything. While I have tried to "fix" all my computer issues, I have tinkered with my computer so much that I just want to start fresh. Will archive and install do this or do I have to erase everything and start all over? I can't seem to find the answer anywhere else. Thanks
    G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

An Archive and Install will install a fresh System (folder) but preserve your User's folder, which many or some of the preferences are kept, so your app after launch, its look, settings etc will still be the same.
This may be good or bad, depending if it is the preference files that maybe corrupted or damaged that has been giving you problems. But one thing for sure is this install will not "bring over" any 3rd party "hacks" that you have installed (they appear in your System Preference Pane, e.g. Norton, Wacom, etc)
Do the A&I Install first, then slowly move, re-install and re-configure any (creditable) 3rd party software you have, try and stay away from too many "hacks" and enhancers for the time being, especially if you have use them in the past, 'cause it may be one of those, or between 2 or more that causes conflict and problems for your mac originally
The worst-case would be a complete reformat and re-install of everything, but I don't think you need to go to that extreme
    Cheers

  • FCP Studio 2 wont respond after archive and instal... please help

Hi I have been on the imac forum with the first half of this problem. Ill start from the beginning to give you some background.
I did a routine apple software update and when restarting my computer it got stuck on the blue screen and would go no further. After trying everything I had to do an Archive and Instal. This worked and I can now fully boot up.
However, after this process my FCP S2 will not work. When I click on any of the FCP S2 icons, they bounce and nothing else happens. It does not matter if I do this from the apps folder or on the desk top. The strange thing is that DVD Studio will open and works like normal.
Is there anything I can do to get my FCP S2 programs to work again and if not how should I go about reinstalling so I will not lose all my projects. What is the proper procedure for deletion and reinstallation.
Thanks so much for your time

backup project and all other work files
clean install Mac OS (this wipes the hard drive clean)
install from installation discs FCP Studio
    reinstate the project files

  • Help with Archive and Install

Hi, I just archived and installed OS X today 10.5 and I noticed that there's a folder called previous system. This folder has the same applications that I have on the new applications folder, for example, I had two versions of iTunes, the new one would not read the library so I deleted it and moved the older one to the new applications folder. My question is: Is that folder really necessary? Because it has the same applications that I have on the new one and it's taking up disk space. Is it Ok to delete? or should I just leave it alone?
    Thank You for your time

if all your apps are working normally you can safely delete that folder. it's left there just in case something didn't migrate properly.

  • How can I do an archive and install

I have just put my new 1TB HDD in my macbook pro and I cannot enable FV2, something to do with a recovery partition. I have heard that a reinstall will work, so how can I do an archive and install on my MacBook pro?
    Mid-2012, Mountain Lion.
    Thank you.

A&I went away with Snow Leopard. Reinstalling it or later OSs overwrites all OS components and basic Apple apps. Updating or upgrading to solve problems is the wrong approach, You need to fix the current issues before embarking on that path. As for speeding up things, see:
