Archive and Install Hangs

I purchased a brand new MacBook and began installing software. One application would not launch no matter what I did so I tried all the usual troubleshooting steps and nothing worked. My final step was to attempt an Archive and Install of the OS to see if that fixed things. After inserting Install Disk 2 I got to the iWeb Application Installer Script and the final two minutes of the install and the computer hung. I finally forced the computer to shut down by holding the power button down and it rebooted back to the DVD and continued the install to about the same point where it hung again. So I started poking around and found several posts from users having the same issue, but outside of a post about Apple offering to replace their DVDs and a post about trying an Upgrade Install instead of an Archive and Install (which I'm trying now and will post back later with my results) I've seen no real solution for this. Is it possible that Apple sent out a bad series of Install Disk 2? Has anyone figured out how to get this to work?

to continue.....
I put the 'Bad' computer into Target mode, and from my Power Book ejected the Installer disc 2.
Came out of Target mode and 'bad' computer wants Disc 2 to complete previous Install.
Put in Disc 1 and before it has a chance to load, shut down with power button.
Start up again holding down 'C' key it boots from Disc 1, where I can start the Archive and Install process over.
This time I customise the Install files and uncheck iWeb, and the other stuff I don't want, such as Printer drivers and useless (To me) languages.
That Install still froze at the One minute to end mark, when it's writing iLife files.
I give up and eject disc as before, start over and Clean Install. Lucky I'd backed up my Home folder and apps before. The Clean Install works
This all started a couple days ago when I had a HD problem and clean installed, but somewhere along the line lost the 'Backup app', which led me to archive and Install in the hope of getting it back.
I now kick myself, having found it on .Mac 'doh'

  • OS hangs frequently after Archive and Install

My iBook tried to startup with no video (hung at the gray screen with the apple logo) so I performed an Archive and Install. The iBook does start up now and almost works functionally. The problem is that it it constantly going in to a hang mode (spinning wheel) making it difficult to perform any in any applications including the Finder. It hangs with a spinning wheel for about 45 seconds of every minute ro so.
I saw the Previous System folder is there something in there that I can do to work this glitch out? Maybe something needs to be copied over form the Previous System Folder to the new System Folder? Any help?
    Mac OS X 10.4

Locate com.apple.finder.plist. Toss it, and restart. If this fails, do basic repairs with Disk Utility. Also use Disk Warrior if you have it.
Any reason you do not have a backup?

  • Archive and Install/Disc Utility issues -

I'm currently spending a summer abroad in South America, and have had issues with my Macbook Pro (early 2011 version) no longer starting up after some virus experiences last week.  The computer hangs itself during loading on the white screen w/ grey apple and the spinning dial.  In contacts with Apple Care as well as some Mac-saavy friends, the following situations have been tried:
Opening in safe mode - The loading bar (added at the bottom of the grey apple screen) loads about 1/4 of the way, disappears, and the computer hangs itself.
Opening in single user mode - I run the recommended sbin/fsck -fy command to clean up the hard drive.  It comes back after having checked 6-7 parts, saying that the MacHD is in good shape, with a message following saying that something had been "modified" (forgive me for not remembering the correct verbage at present).  I then run the same command again, resulting in a message that the HD is clean and without error.  I then "reboot" and remain hung on the white screen w/ grey apple.
Opening in verbose mode - I reach the following lines of text, and then there is no further progress:
    enable
    IONetworkController::enable
    createMediumTables
    enable end
MacAuthEvent en0   Auth result for: 00:23:cd:1e:f2:c4 No Ack
same line as above saying "Auth timed out" at the end
Command+option+r+p - shock two or three times, (three startup chimes) and computer continues to hang itself in the normal spot.
    - So, at this point I took the advice of Apple Care and a few other friends, and tracked down a "retail copy" of Mac OSX (10.6.3) in order to try to do an Archive and Install or any sort of Disc Utility via the startup disc.
Inserting the disc and holding "c" at startup results in the cd drive whirring the disc for a few moments, and then remaining hung at the same white loading screen.
Holding "option" during the startup gives me the option of loading from the HD, or the disc.  Selecting the disc proceeds to whirr the cd drive, take me to the white loading screen with the grey apple, and... you guessed it... leaves the CPU hung.
My question is then, is my Macbook Pro unable to read this disc and execute Archive and Install/Disc Utility for hardware reasons as per the virus attack, or is the disc not compatible with my version of OSX (which I have since confirmed through my wife to be 10.6.6)?
Different sources have told me different things.  The local AASP in Uruguay sold me what they professed to be the "latest" version of OSX - the 10.6.3, what's more for $55 dollars instead of the lower cost as available in the states (between $15-$30), so I am reluctant to go back to them for advice when they seem more inclined to cash in on my inexperience (Mac owner of less than a month) than actually fixing my issue.  Apple Care told me that a standard "retail disc" should work, but I am assuming now that they believe I can snag the same version as initially came with my Macbook Pro.  Should I be looking to have my wife mail my original OSX install DVDs down here to resolve this problem?  Should 10.6.3-retail be working and is not for reasons I haven't identified?  I have since done some online research and found mentions that doing any sort of HD partitioning or OSX reinstalls can only be accomplished by utilizing a disc of an equal or more recent version of the OSX (examples that 10.4 can't work on a notebook preinstalled with 10.5, etc).  Does this translate to 10.6.3 not being able to function for my 10.6.6 MBP?
Any insight or thoughts would be much appreciated, as essentially all of my schoolwork and assignments are now trapped on an inaccessible HD.  Thank you for your time.

I tried adding in a bunch of information about what your troubleshooting steps meant, but the server went into maintenance while I did. So, here it is again:
"Opening in safe mode - The loading bar (added at the bottom of the grey apple screen) loads about 1/4 of the way, disappears, and the computer hangs itself."
This is FSCK running, and gives you an indication of it's progress.
"MacAuthEvent en0   Auth result for: 00:23:cd:1e:f2:c4 No Ack"
This is either a failed DHCP request or ARP request.
    "Command+option+r+p"
         Command+Option+P+R - Resets PRAM. That's why p+r.
"Inserting the disc and holding "c" at startup results in the cd drive whirring the disc for a few moments, and then remaining hung at the same white loading screen."
This problem indicates that the disc is too old to boot your system. The reason for why this disc cannot boot is because it doesn't contain the necessary drivers for your model MacBook Pro. My mom and brother have similar models, and my brother had similar issues while in Japan. He went and got an install disc as well, which failed, I ended up stepping him through so that it would boot in Safe Mode, and then got it working in Normal Mode remotely.
FYI: Sophos has a free Mac Antivirus program, that is very processing friendly, and will scan in the background. You may wish to consider it as an alternative to Avast! if it continues giving you problems. Though I suspect it may be coincidence that your computer had problems shortly after Avast! cleaned up files. Let me know how it goes. You may wish to open up Disk Utility and check your S.M.A.R.T. Status. You want to make sure it says "Verified" If it doesn't say "Verified" then you have a problem.

  • Problem with Archive and Install - Second disc won't complete

I'm trying to run an archive and install for my iMac, OS 10.4.11. I get through the first disc fine, but after I put in the 2nd install disc, it gets all the way to the "finishing installation" and then won't move past "running GarageBand Demo Songs Installer Script". it says less than a minute remaining, and the downloading bar is swirling, but there is nothing happening and it hangs here for hours. I've tried reinstalling, but it will only ask me to load the 2nd disk again, and the same thing happens over and over. I even tried a different install disc 2, and the same thing happened. Is there a way to push past this, or start the entire archive and install again? when i reboot to the disc drive with the 1st install disk, it ask me to put in the 2nd disc.
This all started because iTunes was acting up after I got an ipod touch, no prior problems with the computer. Can anyone help?

I've seen this reported before. What some have had some success with is to do a custom install so the second disk is not needed. See BDAqua's tip to someone with the same issue in the Tiger forum.

  • Archive and Install back to Tiger

    Hello all!
After about a month of frustration, I think I am ready to take my PowerBook back to Tiger. I see that I can do an Archive and Install from my Tiger Retail. The only problem I see is that the "Preserve Users" setting is grayed out.
So, if I go through this Archive and Install, will I still have access to my old apps (iLife '08, and some third party stuff like Finale), photos, documents, and music?
Thanks for all of your help!

    Here is the latest update:
I am happy (albeit slightly puzzled) to report that I have been running KERNEL PANIC FREE for most of yesterday and today. Here is why I am puzzled: I booted up yesterday and the system seemed to hang. I noticed that the keyboard worked, but not the trackpad. I went and got an old Apple USB mouse. When I plugged it in, it responded. I was able to work all of yesterday afternoon and this morning without incident.
Just for giggles, I unplugged the mouse this morning. I got a KP after about 30 seconds. Here is the report from that KP:

  • Archive and Install limbo (G4)

I tried, all too long ago (actually, over the past couple of weeks) to do a full Archive and Install for Tiger on my G4 Sawtooth. I had originally installed the OS from disks (CDs) that I bought from what I thought was a reputed dealer. What I didn't know is that the disks were not the real Apple ones. Instead of being black, they are white, with a grey X on each.
I managed to install Disk 1 successfully (though it restarted at the end). That left on my hard drive just the folder called System that is within the System folder that holds all the OS components. When I tried to install Disk 2, it sometimes seemed to install all the components on the disk and sometimes only some, but it always ended in a message saying that errors were found and I needed to try reinstalling. I never get beyond that point. Now I'm in a limbo without a System that I can boot to and the ability just to get out and try to reinstall from a legitimate DVD of Tiger that I got this week. All I want to so is get rid of the stuff that was deposited on my hard drive. Until I can do that, I'm stuck with the error message. I can't even shut down the computer! It doesn't know that I have a system on it.
I can boot the computer into 9.2.2, but only with a repair disk that was lent to me by a computer repair place here in New York. I had hoped that I'd be able to boot up from the Tiger DVD, but that can't work while I have to use the CD/DVD drive to get into anything but the error message I mentioned above. Also, for some reason there is no sign of my Documents Folder, which has almost all of my files, nor any other OS X folder (except that System one that is usually embedded in the larger System one). I hope they are not gone forever.
There also is a folder called Previous System 1. That is the one that was on the computer before I started the Archive and Install process. I wondered what would happen if I renamed the folder that was installed by the Tiger Disk 1 and the Previous System folder, but I am afraid to try.
How to deal with this? By the way I have all the necessary software for OS 9, and now I have the new, legitimate Tiger DVD—though I can't boot from that nor do anything else with it until my computer recognizes that it has a hard drive and a System. If it would help, I could reinstall OS 9.2.2, but where would I go from there? And would it help, anyway?
A friend suggested removing the battery and resetting the PMU. I don't know whether that will do the trick.
I hope that you can help me. I'm kind of frazzled, after days and days of trying to do a full Archive and Install. Thank you very much, in advance.
    Jenny

Thanks, but the firmware was updated, and I was already using 10.4.11. I managed to get back to OS 9.2.2, somehow, so I can use the computer a bit, but I don't have access to some of the data I had with Tiger. I really want to reinstall Tiger, and I'd be willing to get legitimate Tiger disks (so angry that I was rooked into buying the ones with the grey "X"), but:
    1. Would it work?
    2. Where would I get them? Clearly, I have no serial number for the disks, because they weren't real Apple ones (as I said, I didn't know that), so I doubt that Apple would help me. All I want is to get Tiger back.
I see, from this discussion group, that I am not unique in getting stuck on Disk 2, so maybe it's a problem with software and not my Mac. I don't know.
I've been working with a Mac guru of sorts, but we tried all kinds of things (taking battery out and doing the CUDA thing, for example, trying to do an install from Firewire, etc.). He even sent me a copy of a Tiger DVD to try. It didn't boot the G4 or even mount on the desktop, despite the fact that I can play other DVDs just fine. My G4 DVD drive spat it out, and my G3 laptop first was able to mount it and then boot it, but attempts at installation failed, with the computer hanging after installation started. Then the G3 also refused to accept the Tiger install DVD. Very mysterious, all of it.
I had already used Disk Warrior and the 9.2.2 version of Disk First Aid. That latter I did when the G4 was booted from a 9.2.2 troubleshooting CD from a place that repairs computers. (They gave it to me on another occasion, before I used Tiger.) I continued until no need for repairs was reported.
My guru seems to be out of options, and he is convinced that the Tiger disk he so kindly sent me has no problems on it. I am not altogether sure. Why, else, would my DVD drive willingly play whatever else I put into it but spit out that disk? Oh, well. I think the two of us are out of options. If anyone here has others, I would happily try them.
    Best,
    Jenny

  • Stop archive and install 2nd DVD

I had my MacBook Pro upgraded to a 200GB disk, and am having problems. I restored the disk with CarbonCopy, but started to have problems with Carbin apps - crashes, Carbinlib access etc. The second restore created the same problem. The system runs fine from the mirrored disk.
I finally decided on an archive and install, but the system hangs with an error in postflight after installing iWeb. This is not critical, but everytime I reboot it forces the system back in to the installer.
How can I reset the new OS to boot normally. I tried PRAM reset etc.
    Very frustrating....

Hi admesko, and a warm welcome to the forums!
You hace little choice to but power it down & start over.
    First...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
Then, Second install disk won't work or is missing...
A workaround is to reduce the number of Languages, Printer, Drivers, Fonts, and
APPs until it no longer needs Disk 2 for the install.
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.

  • Need help with frozen Archive and Install

I've tried restarting, but it will only ask me to load the 2nd disk again, and the same thing happens over and over. Apple even sent me a new install disk 2, and the same thing happened, so I know it's not the disk. Is there a way to push past this?
I did a disk utility repair and it said everything was fine.
WZZZ suggested a custom installation, but I haven't tried it yet because I'm worried I might lose the data on my hard drive. (Stupidly) none of it is backed up. Any advice? Do you think I'll lose my data if I force it start over with disk 1 and do a custom install?
If not, is that the best thing to do?

Hi there, WZZZ is one sharp guy, go for it, (known him since he was knee high to a Grasshopper!
Do you think I'll lose my data if I force it start over with disk 1 and do a custom install?
At worst we should maybe only have complications with several Previous System Folders, but after forcing shutdown reboot do what WZZZ pointed to...
    "Try Disk Utility

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
That second Disk thing happens frequently, the best way around it is to do a Custom install, and eliminate enough Printer Drivers, Languages, Fonts, and Applications you don't need... then it may skip #2 altogether.

  • How do I use archive and install to restore my CD drive?

I have a 2.66 GHz MacPro with current leopard software. My extended warranty just ran out. Before it ran out I began having problems with my CD drive in that some CD's or DVD's will be recognized while others' will not open. After talking extensively to Apple, they told me to do an archive and install with the original installation discs. I've been putting this off (even allowing the warranty to expire) because I'm paranoid that I'm going to lose precious data even though I have a current Time Machine backup.
So my question is do I just do the archive and install and hope for the best? Will I then have to upgrade back to the current version? I remember doing an archive and install a couple of times before to upgrade OS's and a few things didn't work until they were tweaked - lost code numbers, some Adobe products, etc.
Or is there a CD/DVD drive 'package' on the OSX install CD? Could I just reload this? If so can anyone tell me where to look? I would love to do this because everything else is working perfectly and I don't want to mess things up.
Note: I'm sure it's a software thing and not hardware related after consulting with Apple.
    Thanks for the help,
    Lou

How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • I need help to recover/relink mail after archive and install

I am helping my friend fix her 15" G4 PowerBook after memory failures caused many crashes. There was no recovering short of a reinstall via "archive and install". All that worked great, but now Mail doesn't recognize the accounts, mailboxes, signatures, etc. that are still located in the user/library/mail folder.
What's up with that? I can't figure out how to relink Mail to this stuff.
    Here's more detail:
    1) After lots of prior debugging (Disk Utility, Disk Warrior, Apple Hardware Test, single-user commands per Apple tech notes), I did the A&I to 10.3.4 from the original disks.
    2) Per Dr. Smoke and The X Lab, I ran the 10.3.9 combo installer right away so that the "older" system would not get confused by the "newer" stuff in the Previous Systems folder.
    3) I Launched Mail and it started anew, i.e. didn't recognize accounts and wanted to start over.
    Thanks for any help.

The account settings are stored in HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist. It looks like that file became corrupt -- maybe its permissions went awry (Disk Utility cannot fix that) and Mail just deleted the file to create a new one.
If your friend doesn't have a backup copy of that file, just set up the accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don't. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in HOME/Library/Mail/ when done.
You'll also have to re-configure most settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it's enabled.

  • "The application Safari has unexpectedly quit." / "Archive and Install"

...The system and other applications have not been affected.
Would you like to submit a bug report to Apple?
I was working on my eMac last night when all of a sudden Safari shut down. I tried to open it again and I kept getting the above error message.
At first, I thought this was no big deal, as I just downloaded Mozilla Firefox. However, it seems that whatever error caused this corruption in Safari has also affected my MSN Messenger, and a few other internet related Apps.
I don't know if any of you have come across this problem before, but it would be greatly appreciated if you could email me your suggestions to fixing this problem.
I called Apple support, and the lady suggest looking for a way to "archive and install preserving" so that I don't lose any of my important files. I'm sure that this might fix my problem as well.
Please let me know if you have a solution for me!!
    Eric.

    Eric Jackson Wood,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Doing an Archive and Install because Safari unexpectedly quit is roughly akin to using several sticks of dynamite to take out a housefly in the kitchen. How much RAM does your Mac have, and how long had Safari been running continuously before the quit? Safari does have a known memory leak problem (the Safari 3 beta may have fixed that; too soon to tell for sure); if you have a minimal amount of RAM (256 MB or less), run multiple applications simultaneously, and leave Safari running for several hours, you can expect Safari to bog down. If you then try to load some types of web page constructs, the unexpectedly quit message isn't quite so unexpected. (Quitting and relaunching Safari every few hours is a viable workaround; in sever cases you may need to restart the computer as well.)
How were other Internet apps affected? Slowdowns, unable to connect, unable to find sites, or what? What version of MSN Messenger are you using? (MSN Messenger isn't known for being overly robust in the first place.) If a number of online utilities all begin to act strange at the same time, my first suspect would be the local network and the ISP. Is the problem still persistent after restarting the computer and after several hours (to allow the ISP to fix any glitches on their end)?
If Safari continues to misbehave, launch Safari and before going to any website, try going to the Safari menu and select the commands to reset Safari and clear cache, then restart Safari and see it that helps. If you have Safari set to open going to a homepage rather than opening a blank page, first move /Users/ [your_username]/ Library/ Preferences/ com.apple.Safari.plist to the Desktop before launching Safari to reset it and clear its caches. If Safari then works, you can quit it and try moving you previous preferences back; if Safari begins acting up again, trash the old preferences and re-enter your desired settings in a newly-created preferences file.

  • Syncing two iPhones with one iTunes account, archive and install

I had a blue screen and had to archive and install.
I re-synched my iPhone and at that time put my iPhone contacts in my address book with
my group name, that I just created. I created a group for her and now want to re-synch her iPhone
with my computer and with my iTunes account, like before. I get a message that the info on that her iPhone is synched with another user account. A choice to merge info from this user account or replace info from this user account. I want to make sure that her contacts go into the address book, under
her group. I don't want to lose her her contacts on the phone, when I re-synch her iphone.

I want to make sure that her contacts go into the address book, under her group. I don't want to lose her her contacts on the phone, when I re-synch her iphone.
You should select the Merge option. If you don't, the existing contact information in the Address Book on your Mac will replace all contact info in her iPhone's address book.

  • Want to run an archive and install, but can't empty trash to free space

I don't know where to begin... at some point recently something caused problems with several applications, so after trying to repair permissions and repair disk with no luck, I decided to archive & install. Now I want the old problems back: Word/Excel/Photoshop will not open because of some library error (Carbonlib?), and my network settings keep going screwy such that if my computer goes to sleep, I couldn't pick up my wireless signal anymore without restarting (and then ta-da, there it was like there was never any problem).
So in trying to archive and install I keep stalling at the very beginning... I'll leave it for hours hoping it would proceed but it wouldn't. I've repaired disk several times, with the same errors ultimately coming up. So without being able to archive and install I figured I'd better back everything up and do an erase & install. Started backing things up in prep for moving them onto a server, but when I plugged the server in, my computer said it couldn't get on. Same exact server wire had just come out of my work computer which connects just fine. So now I've got duplicates of all my files on the desktop, so I try to trash them and when I select 'empty trash' or 'secure empty trash', I get the box that says "preparing to empty trash" and then everything except my wallpaper goes away, and eventually comes back as if I've restarted. Now I definitely can't archive and install because with duplicate copies of all my files I have only 1.7gb available and need 1.9 to install just the required files.
I'm at a total loss! Incidentally, my ipod won't mount if I try to plug it in.
Are there other options in disk utility that I can try? I don't know enough to feel comfortable just trying something, and I don't know what the "Restore" option does.
Oh goodness, I hope somebody knows something that can help me out of this.

Odd, the link works for me.

  • Finder crashes, won't let me archive and install

I'm at a complete loss. After installing the latest update to MacOS X, everything is messed up. And it seems unfixable. The finder won't stay open, no matter what user your under, though I can still open everything from the dock. I've tried:
    1. Creating a new user.
    2. Running disk utility, doesn't work.
    3. Repairing permissions, works, but doesn't fix problem.
    4. Running Norton Utilities, doesn't work.
    5. Archiving and Installing, which brings up an error that tells you to try again.
    6. Archiving and installing, without keeping the user file and network settings in tact.
    7. Random other stuff I can't recall (such as some terminal stuff), but didn't work.
Is my only option to try to back this stuff up and reinstall? Do you think that will even work? My mother has a copy of disk warrior that she would have to send me. That's something else I could try, but I'm not sure if it would be worth it. Also, I can still boot up in OS 9.

Hi johnink, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    4. Running Norton Utilities, doesn't work.
This is probably the source of your problem. First of all get rid of Norton, use it for a coaster or a frisbee but not on your Mac! Do not let Norton near your X system, it will hose it!
Norton Disk Doctor is not compatible with OS X 10.4 Tiger. Symantec ceased development of Norton Utilities for Macintosh and Norton SystemWorks for Macintosh 2 years ago. But it has been ruining systems since the intro of X.
You should create a complete backup of your files and erase & re-install the OS.

  • After "Archive and Install", my printer no longer works

    Powerbook 1.67 GHz PowerPC G4
    Mac OS X Version 10.4.11
I recently had some issue with my password, so the Apple Genius people ran an archive and install, reset the user password, and got me back to my original state. However, I've had to run all these updates now, and can't figure out how to get the printer to work again. It worked perfectly fine before the archive and install, it was recognized right away.
    I have tried the following:
I uninstalled and then reinstalled the printer software (Epson Stylus CX6000) from the installer CD. Didn't work. Unplugged and turned off power, then re-plugged and restarted everything. Didn't work. I have no idea what to do here. I downloaded any new updates to the software from the Epson website. Didn't work. Help?

If the correct printer driver is missing, and the Print selection
box says Any Printer, it may be unable to use that one.
See if the printer can be used in a different user account.
Sometimes if the system is messed up (even pros do it)
there may be a way to see if the issue is system wide or
if it is based in a problem in the admin user account.
Some optional printer drivers may be available at the printer
manufacturer's web site for downloads. Sometimes there is
a newer one for the entire class of printer models, and so
it may be for yours. Or there is GimpPrint/GutenPrint for
other drivers; their web page shows supported printers.
{Since you state that you've tried other driver options, then
you may have to consider doing a new 'archive & install'
and be sure everything is done right, and then update it.
    Or an all new installation on a wiped empty hard drive.}
There should be a printer error log accessible through Console
and perhaps it may shed some light on the basic problem...
PS: Is this printer an Ethernet and USB printer? If so, have
you tried whatever other connection/cable to see if it works
when running on the other available protocol? The Ethernet
printer would use an IP address or hardware MAC address
and the appropriate cable, if the printer supports both.
    Good luck & happy computing!
