Archive and Install Mail Problem...could somebody please advise?

Hello,
I went to the "genius bar" today because my powerbook fan has been blazing like crazy. I had OS 10.4 on my computer, which I had installed from an upgrade about a year ago. I bought the computer a few months before and when it shipped with 10.3. So the guy at the mac store told me to re-install the system using the archive and install feature. He told me to re-install 10.3, which came with the computer, and then to run the upgrade that I have to get it back to 10.4.
I am having some problems. I have reinstalled X.3 and find that when I open the Mail application, all of my messages of the last year are gone. I can't find them anywhere. The most recent message is from May '05, when I upgraded from 10.3 to 10.4. I am afraid that if I do anything else, like install 10.4 that I will lose any chance of recovering these files. Does anybody have any advice on where I can recover the emails from my inbox and other folders? I will be very angry if they are gone for good, because the guy at the apple store assured me that everything would be saved by clicking the "preserve users and network settings" option in the re-install program. Furthermore, lots of older emails (pre-'05) have been saved, so it seems like the newer ones should be too. Or will they only show up when I re-install 10.4? I was holding off on doing this because I wanted to see if the fan would run less using the older system.
thanks for any advice!

When you Archive and Install all your info is saved in a Previous Systems Folder. You cannot boot from this folder, but you should find your data and prefs there. Check out this article: Archive and Install.
Try this: Go to the Previous Systems Folder and to the User's Library. When you open the Library Folder, go to Mail. All your stuff should be in there.
PS: Never do any major procedure such as installation, erase and install, archive and install without a good backup of everything you can't afford to lose.
Good luck.

  • FCP S2 wont start after archive and instal.... Please help

Hi I have been on the imac forum with the first half of this problem. Ill start from the beginning to give you some background.
I did a routine apple software update and when restarting my computer it got stuck on the blue screen and would go no further. After trying everything I had to do an Archive and Instal. This worked and I can now fully boot up.
However, after this process my FCP S2 will not work. When I click on any of the FCP S2 icons, they bounce and nothing else happens. It does not matter if I do this from the apps folder or on the desk top. The strange thing is that DVD Studio will open and works like normal.
Is there anything I can do to get my FCP S2 programs to work again and if not how should I go about reinstalling so I will not lose all my projects. What is the proper procedure for deletion and reinstallation.
Thanks so much for your time

The Previous System folder is just a folder. OS X just treats it like any other folder, so Final Cut Studio isn't technically installed. You don't need to necessarily remove it, although the purpose of performing an Archive and Install is so that you can retrieve files from the Previous System folder before removing it permanently.

  • Archive and install - permissions problem?

I've just installed Leopard using archive and install (I previously had 10.4.11) - I did this as I wanted to keep all my old info - bookmarks, itunes library etc.
however - after restarting - I followed the on screen instructions etc and am now on my desktop with Leopard working ok - but none of my stuff is there - no itunes library, no documents, no bookmarks etc - they do exist in the "previous systems" folder - but I thought they would be added automatically - am I missing something - is it to do with the "repair permissions" on disk utility - do I have to run this to get my files etc put onto Leopard - or has something gone wrong and I'm going to have to copy them all over one by one?
thanks for any help and apologies if the question is stupid - its the first time I've updated a system on a mac!

In order for the transfer to occur you must have selected the option to preserve users and network settings. Apparently you did not check that option and will need to move your files manually from the Previous System Folder. This article will help: How to get files from a previous home directory after Archive and Install.

When I try to go to ilcoud I get 'script problem' and can't enter. Please advise what I should try. Thanks.

I use e-trade and a couple of times, years back, I found them behind the Java updates.
So, now I install new Java platforms on my backup disk and test the streaming data on that first because I know it will be over-written that evening with my nightly backup.
Of course, since I began doing that there hasn't been a problem. Do the same with printer driver updates.
Anyway, call ScottTrade and howl! Tell them how many Macs are out there and why aren't they in Apple Developers Program?

  • I cannot update software on my iPhone. I am missing the Download and Install option. Could someone please help?

Please help. I cannot update the software on my iPhone c.
I go onto software update but the Download and Install options is not there.
I have tried deleting apps to make space so this doesn't appear to be the issue.

iOS 8.1.3 is the latest version. There's nothing to download.

  • Archive and Install - Getting Mailboxes Back

I was forced into re-installing Tiger due to the freezing issues with Leopard. The only option I had was "Archive and Install". I could not preserve user settings (it was greyed out). What is the best way to get my stuff back. In particular Mailboxed. I do see that all my Previous Stuff was put into a "Previous Folder". How do I get my mailboxes and my saved mail back into the mail program?

I'm afraid yes... I went to Disk Utility - File - New - Disk Image from folder. And then chose the folder with my user name. It goes ahead and creates the image file - which is 56kb btw.
The weird thing is that the Previous System file is 30gb. So, there is no way that my stuff is deleted. Just don't know how to get to it.
    Any ideas?

I was forced into re-installing Tiger due to the freezing issues with Leopard. The only option I had was "Archive and Install". I could not preserve user settings (it was greyed out). What is the best way to get my stuff back. In particular Playlists. I can easily find my songs and put them back in iTunes, but where did my playlists go? How can I get those back.

  • Archive and install problems

    Hi:
After filling out the Apple troubleshooting form, I followed the advice and took my machine to an authorized reseller/service center.  They recommended an archive and install, plus a new and larger HD(WD Caviar 750: he said it would not take a larger one), promised that nothing would change or be lost (the machine is used for 2 purposes only: 60,000 photos and email).  With so many images, I have an extensive keyword list which enables me to find them instantly using Adobe Bridge (CS 2).  Without the keywords, the images might as well be lost. Now, I have the new drive and the old 250G drive.
The technician called to say he was installing Leopard at no charge, rebuilding my library, defragmenting the hd, resetting my mail from pop to imap and that everything would work as before.
What doesn't work: mail notifies me constantly that the server has no certificate, that the server can't send the mail and sent mail often just sits.  Mail(I am mobile me subscriber) no longer auto completes even though that preference is checked.  Address book is empty.
Bridge lost the keyword master structure which is kept in an xml file.  That file was empty.  I dragged the original xml file with all the keywords from an external back up hd into bridge on the new drive but nothing happened.  The words are there but bridge doesn't use the file.  Bridge shows only the default keyword list.  The images, however, retained their exif data and keywords.
When I open a folder of images, bridge now has to spend minutes rendering the thumbs.
I realize this is an apple not an adobe forum but perhaps these symptoms reveal the solution. In addition, I don't have any leopard install disc so see that I now have no way to use hardware test or safe boot if necessary.  Even though I have my Tiger discs, the tech. insisted on installing Leopard from whatever disc he has, I guess.  I thought all the discs are registered to this machine and to me so not sure how that is ok.
Thanks for any suggestion.  I've searched the adobe forums but can find nothing for my version of the software, only for newer versions.
sorry this is so long.  I will be very grateful to anyone willing to take the time to wade through it.

    Great reply from Limnos, btw.
I'd be tempted to try a Tiger Install, but you'd have to erase one of the drives.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport in 10.4 & below, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

    /Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons

  • Boot problems - can I "Archive and Install" to back-up and then reformat?

    Hi all!
I'm having booting problems with my PowerBook 15".
I've ran the hardware/disk utility tests and everything seems fine. The problem is, I get a blue-screen with the spinning sun-dial or sthing. It keeps spinning and spinning! I tried going into safe-mode, but it doesn't work!
My question is, can I do an "Archive and Install"... load a fresh copy of OS X on my PowerBook so that I can back-up my data? Would this work?
    Please help, thanks!

I took the risk and managed to install Tiger over my previous OS successfully! Afterwards, I backed up everything as fast as I could, and then did a Clean Install. Worked like a charm! haha..
However... after doing the Clean Install, I realised that I am UNABLE to install "Windows Media Player for Mac OX X" on to my machine!?!?! I downloaded "WindowsMediaInstaller.bin", and opened it with StuffIt Expander. StuffIt Expander just hung at the "Preparing" mode and says "Preparing..."
Anyone else has/had the same problem? Please help, as a number of online radio sites require Windows Media Player to run, and now I can't access them!! =(

  • Problem Deleting Previous System after Archive and Install

Earlier in my time with this wonderful iMac, I did an Archive and Install to try and resolve a slight problem. I read all the docs beforehand and knew it would save the previous system in its own folder and saw that I could likely delete that folder afterwards.
I have waited months since then, (almost forgotten about this folder) but have never had reason to want anything there, so today decided to delete it.
I dragged the entire previous system folder to trash and tried to empty trash. It deleted most of the stuff, but kept one package DownloadReader7.pkg complaining of locked files.
I have used Pacificist to look at the contents of this package and it says it is a receipt. It contains elements of Adobe Reader Download Manager.app
I have looked on my present working system and can not find an equivalent.
    So two questions...
    1. Is it safe to delete this package (if I knew how)?
    2. If it is safe to delete it, HOW do I, when it appears to have locked elements when I try to empty trash?

It's safe to delete any files in the PSF.
Usually all you need do is press the OPTION key before selecting Empty Trash. If that doesn't work the next thing to try is restart the computer after you've dragged the file to the Trash. If neither works then visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on resolving Trash problems.

  • Will an archive and install solve account problems?

I want to remove old accounts and create a new one. Currently, I have to authenticate whenever I want to save any of my files. Somehow I fouled up the user library. Will an archive and install of the OS (10.5.8) correct this on my iMac PPC?

Backup all of your data before starting anything.
If you go with Niel's solution,  be sure to get a copy of all your data.
There are several way of proceding:
    1) fix permissions on your account.
    2) You could copy all your files to a flash drive.  Delete on the hd.  Copy files back to hd.  This will adjust the permissions.
    3) create a new account.  copy old data to flash drive.  Copy data to new account.
    I'd create a new account.
Download BatChmod 1.51.  Will allow you to change your permissions.
    Works on 10.5 and 10.6
I am using 1.51 on Mac OS 10.4.11
    Download BatChmod 1.37
(for previous system versions as 1.5 has not been tested on any other system, though may work.)
    http://www.macchampion.com/arbysoft/BatchMod/Download.html
    Create new Account
    blue apple > system preferences
    clicks on accounts icon
click on lock icon if locked.
    enter logon password
click on + icon ( left side of screen just above the lock icon )
after creating new account, you need to logout of your current account.
blue apple > log out ... current count name ...
log on to new account. see if problem goes away.
if it has gone  away, some preference file got messed up on your account. Rename the appropriate  Preference file. You will have to figure out the name.   They are .plist files.  Look for these files in Preferences folder which is in your Library folder [ more formally ~/Library/Preferences ].  ... reboot.
    Post back for more help.

  • Installing leopard as an 'archive and install' and problems!

I have just made and archive and install of leopard on my macbook and although the programme told me the installing had been accomplished without problems, the computer could not start up. Instead of starting up it entered a sort of loop where it displayed the Mac apple and had a weel spinning for some minutes, then the screen went black as if it restarted the computer and then it went back to the mac apple on a grey/blue background and the spinning weel.
Can anybody help me with this problem? What has gone wrong and how can a save my computer!

This is just my disaster day! I finally managed to get Leopard installed, but despite the fact that I did an 'archive and install' the installation process had not kept my files intact - most of my work files have gone it seems and the Leopard did start all over keeping none of my settings at all.
I have now looked in the previous systems folder and only some files and settings are seemingly stored, but I don't know how to 'reinstall' them on my computer.
I must admit that Mac very much resembles macrisoft products in this case. What a disaster!

  • Archive and install mistake, Stuffit Deluxe 10.0 problems

    Hi,
    Oops!
I run OS 10.3.9 on my eMac. Anyway, I did an archive and install when I should have done a software restore.
So, now I haven't been able to get my Stuffit Deluxe Expander and other Stuffit Apps. to function.
Can someone please help me get it running again?
Any other suggestions for this also?
    Thank you.
    L+

Wouldn't it be easier to delete Stuffit Deluxe 10.0 on my startup disk?
That would be easy, all right, but it would leave you without Stufffit Deluxe. Not what you want, I think.
And could I just retore Stuffit Deluxe 10.0 from my backup disk by incremental to the backup disk, by incremental from the backup to the Startup disk instead?
If I understand this question correctly (which isn't easy), then yes, you can do that, if you want to look around for the proper places in which to put all the different components of SD, instead of letting the installer on the SD CD do it reliably and fast the first time.
If you don't have an SD installer CD, then of course you'll have to do the best you can with what you have. If you do have the CD, reinstalling from it is a no-brainer in your situation.

  • Recover mail after archive and install

    Hey there good mac people,
I recently archived and installed on my ibook g4. It was successful, my problem is that I forgot to backup all the mail I had in my osx mail app.
The previous system folder (library<mail<mail accounts<com.mac.mailaccounts<English.lproj< file, but I don't know if this will help restore or not?
Some of the mail is still on the server, but it is set to delete from the server once a week, and thus only a weeks worth at best is still on the server.
    Does anybody have any suggestions?
In the future, what's the best way to back up mail?

    Hello art-is-work.
I don't understand your problem. Archive and Install should have preserved all your data, unless you told it to do otherwise. Did you?
Mail stores most preferences and all account settings in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist. Everything else, including all your messages and mailboxes, is stored within the ~/Library/Mail/ folder.
If the problem is that you told the installer to not Preserve Users and Network Settings, then Archive and Install should still have saved a copy of your entire home folder in /Previous Systems/Previous System N/Users/, where N is a number. The old Mail folder and preferences file should be there. You can just copy them to the appropriate location of your current home folder, or follow the somewhat convoluted procedure described in the following article to safely restore them:
How to get files from a previous home directory after Archive and Install (Mac OS X)
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder.

  • Missing mail after "archive and install"

    Hello,
I went to talk to the folks at the "genius bar" today because my powerbook fan has been blazing like crazy. I had OS 10.4 on my computer, which I had installed from an upgrade about a year ago. I bought the computer a few months before that, when it still shipped with OS 10.3. So the guy at the mac store told me to re-install the system using the archive and install feature and the original install disks. He told me to re-install 10.3, which came with the computer, and then to run the upgrade that I have to get it back to 10.4.
I am having some problems. I have reinstalled X.3 and find that when I open the Mail application, all of my messages of the last year are gone. I can't find them anywhere. But everything else on the computer seems untouched...all of my documents, and even old emails from before I made the upgrade to 10.4, one year ago.
I am afraid that if I do anything else, like install 10.4 that I will lose any chance of recovering these files. Does anybody have any advice on where I can recover the emails from my inbox and other folders? The guy at the apple store assured me that everything would be saved by clicking the "preserve users and network settings" option in the re-install program.
Or will everything show up again when I re-install 10.4? I was holding off on doing this because I wanted to see if the fan would run less using the older system, as someone suggested that I try this. I also tried to "import" the inbox in the library/mail folder, but this only imported all of the messages that I already have...not the lost ones.
    thanks for any advice!
    colin

Did the folks or this person at the "genius bar" also recommend that you create or update your backup before performing an Archive & Install?
If not, a "genius" he ain't.
The mbox filing structure used with Tiger Mail is significantly different than the mbox filing structure used with previous Mail.app versions under Jaguar and Panther.
Tiger Mail stores each message contained in a mailbox as a separate file in .emix format located within the Messages folder for the mailbox. Although you can import Jaguar and Panther mailboxes to Tiger, the mbox format used with Tiger Mail is not backwards compatible or interchangeable with Jaguar or Panther Mail without taking an additional step first. The reason you are seeing the old messages available before and up until the time you upgraded to Tiger is because you didn't delete the left over content package files used by Panther Mail and one of these files contains all messages messages and message attachments which are not automatically deleted after the conversion process to the mbox format used with Tiger Mail is completed.
Using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account). Within the account named folder is there an INBOX.mbox file and/or an INBOX.mbox named folder and the same for the other mailboxes (mboxes) within the account named folder?
Tiger Mail.app mboxes at the Finder level are folders and each folder contains a Messages folder which stores each message contained in the mailbox as a separate file in .emix format.
Jaguar and Panther Mail.app mboxes are .mbox files only, not a folder.
