Archive and install - not enough memory

I have installed 2 recent updates and when I I was prompted to restart my macbook it would not start up (just the gray screen appeared with the wheel running).
I tried to archieve and install 0S 10 from the start up disk 1 provided with the macbook. However I cannot complete this as there is insufficient memory.
There are some recent files that I have not backed up so I do not want to erase and install from scratch. Is there a way to retrieve the files and delete some large ones and then do archieve and install?
Thanks for any help.

If you have another Mac around, use FireWire target disk mode...

  • Archive and Install - not enough space?

I'm trying to do an Archive and Install on a MacBook 2.1 that will not start up because of Kernel Panic errors that I have not been able to resolve. When I try to do an Archive and Install I get a message that says "You cannot install Mac OS X without changing your install settings. A newer version of Mac OS X is installed." I then click Options, select Archive and Install, but eventually I get a pop-up that says "You need about 13.3 GB more free space on the destination volume. Deselect some packages or quit the Installer to make more space available..."
When I click OK I get a screen that says "Custom Install on Macintosh HD." It tells me that it requires 15.5 GB and that -13.3 GB is remaining. Even by unchecking everything except "Essential System Software" it still says Space Required 2.5 GB / Remaining -329 MB. My only option at that point is to Go Back. This brings me to the Select a Destination screen, but when I select the HD and click Continue it just loops me back to the Custom Install screen.
It seems like it's asking me to make room on a hard drive I can't access because of the Kernel Panic errors. Any ideas? Thanks.

Have you tried booting to your Install DVD and running the Apple Hardware Test (hold 'D' as startup)?
If you've backed everything up, perhaps a clean install is the better way to go.

  • Mavericks won't install - not enough memory

I have successfully downloaded Mavericks and restarted. But it seems I filled my hard drive and it won't install, because it does not have enough memory. It seems Mavericks install created a new virtual startup disc, so every time I restart, Mavericks tries to install but finds out it does not have enough memory to do so. Is there a way around the new Mavericks startup disc to the old startup disc, which is on the same hard drive, so that I am able to clean up hard drive before installing Mavericks? I only have access to Terminal, Disk Utility and System information through Mavericks Installer menu. When I quit the Mavericks Installer, it tries to select a new startup disc, but does not find any. I have iMac with Intel i3 and latest OS X Mountain Lion before Mavericks install. Thanks for any help.

Thanks for reply. Yes, sorry, I don't have enough free disc space. The question is, how to get out of the Mavericks OS X Install process and start the computer using old system, old start up disc, which is on the same hard drive. Otherwise, I don't have a chance to clean up space on the hard drive and I am in the loop, Restart - Install OS X Mavericks - Finding out there is not enough space - Restart - etc.

  • N82, Unable to install, Not Enough memory error, p...

Like installing some selected applications like Skyfire, Coreplayer, Palringo, but it just did that one time I needed to install the applications, when I bought it new it was fine.

I don't know how much memory you have in N82, but in N81 this was a frequent issue.
The problem was that the installation itself takes up a lot of memory, so in order to install a 3mb application I would need 6mb free.  With some 12 mb total available and the normal operation soon taking up all but 5 mb this would be a problem.  Back at the time I still had my N81 (It has been in service shop soon 4 months, a fact I have been pouring my heartt out elsewhere) I solved the problem that was installing both Maps 2 And NGage client like this.
I made a total reset of the phone, and started with maximum memory available.  Then I started by installing the biggest applications first - NGage and maps 2 while I had the memory to spare for the installation process.  Only then I would install the rest of the apps.

You need to find the "Update" app and run it.  It will check to see if your phone needs an OS update, or if any programs you've installed from the App Store have been updated.

  • Archive and Install OS X Tiger 10.4.11

I put my OS X install DVD that came with my iMac two years ago in to run the hardware test. After, I restarted holding down the "C" key as the DVD said to start from Mac OS X (I now realize that it meant to restart from the installer). I selected "Archive and Install", not wanting to lose my 500 songs and $1000 CDN in software. All went well until it asked for disc two. When it finished installing from that disc, it said that there were errors and to try again, so I tried again with the installer logs open. Those told me that the only errors were that various iLife and iWorks applications could not install because newer versions exist already. As of now, I have tried this three more times with the same result. Are there any options to continue with this "Archive and Install", or is there a way to back up some of the files by connecting to another computer and go back to "Erase and Install"?

Hi Alex, and Welcome to the Discussions!
You can back up that HD using another Mac and FireWire target disk mode...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
You can sometimes get past a borked install by reducing Printer Drivers, Languages, APPs, so you can at least boot up.
Did you use Disk Utility on the Installer to Repair the HD yet?

  • Installed os x 10.6.8 and office 2008 excel not enough memory on start

I just installed OS 10.6.8 and when I try to run Office 2008 Excel I get a "Not Enough Memory" pop-up and it will not open any files.  Any ideas on how to resolve this?  If not how do I revert back to original operation system?

How much RAM is installed in your computer? You need a minimum of 1 GB for Snow Leopard and at least 2 GBs or more for any practical uses.
To revert to your previous OS you need to boot from that installer disc and do an Erase and Instsll. Be sure to back up your files first because the procedure will erase the hard drive.

  • Archive and Install problem (not enough disc space for another install)

Alright, so I've got the blue screen. I tried getting rid of the APE stuff, and they were all successfully deleted, but it's still the blue screen. So I'm going to do the Archive/Install thing. My problem is that if I try to do an Archive and Install, I won't have enough space to do it. I have around 3.5 GB right now, but that's probably not enough to do another install.
My only option I think is to go into single-user mode and manually remove my larger files. I have a back-up drive, and I tried removing all the stuff that's on the back-up drive from my computer, but all of them are listed as read-only.
So is there a way to override permissions in the UNIX thing? Or is there another option for me with?
Also I don't know if this matters, but I'm installing it from an external DVD drive and I'm doing it from PANTHER and not Tiger.

...anyone? I left the blue screen on overnight but it didn't do anything.

How do I upgrade the ram?
The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.
    Crucial
    Other World Computing
Do a backup, preferably 2 separate ones on 2 separate drives.
Revert to a Previous OS X - Yosemite
    Revert to Snow Leopard
If you do revert, I'd use Setup Assistant to restore your data. This process takes a while, so do it when you won't need the computer for several hours, based on my experience.

  • Issue with turning on project 2010 / 2013 - "There is not enough memory to complete the operation. To free up available memory, close programs, projects, or windows you aren't using, and then try again."

I get the following error after the installation and configuration window of MS Project: "There is not enough memory to complete the operation. To free up available memory, close programs, projects, or windows you aren't using, and then try again."
It happens both with MS Project 2010 and 2013 on a Windows 7 desktop.
I tried installing / uninstalling Office 2010, MS Project, tried installing 32 and then 64 bit versions, clean up, disk error checker, startup changes (msconfig), anti virus, running as Windows 7 and then Windows XP compatible mode.
Nothing helps. I see this issue reported as early as 2007 version of MS projects on Microsoft forums, but I do not see any solution anywhere. Any suggestions on how to fix the issue without having to reformat hard drive? Every other application, including
all other Office programs work seamlessly.
I also tried Microsoft support, after an hour and a half of basically doing what I did before, I was told I have to pay 99$ for "premium" support, so someone can look at this bug.
I have 16 Gb RAM and more than 200Gb or hard drive free, so actual memory is not the problem.

This issue was originally reported with MS Project 2007 and keeps popping up since.
A quick Google search provides more than 200K pages of results of this issue:
    https://www.google.ca/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=There+is+not+enough+memory+to+complete+the+operation.+To+free+up+available+memory%2C+close+programs%2C+projects%2C+or+windows+you+aren't+using%2C+and+then+try+again.
    And 193K results on Bing:
    http://www.bing.com/search?q=There+is+not+enough+memory+to+complete+the+operation.+To+free+up+available+memory%2C+close+programs%2C+projects%2C+or+windows+you+aren%27t+using%2C+and+then+try+again.&go=Submit&qs=n&form=QBLH&pq=there+is+not+enough+memory+to+complete+the+operation.+to+free+up+available+memory%2C+close+programs%2C+projects%2C+or+windows+you+aren%27t+using%2C+and+then+try+again.&sc=0-0&sp=-1&sk=&cvid=4cb023c1fbd94ec2bba9821b095f21f2
Computer was defragged already. I run more tests, and specifically when MS Projects tries to run, it tries to take all memory, more than 300Gb, on the computer. (DropBox was running at the same time, and warned that there were no space. As soon as MS Project
stopped attempting to configure itself, everything came back to normal and the available space became available again.)
Looking through older forum posts, looks like this application tries to take "unlimited" amount of memory. Some registry fixes are mentioned potentially, but I was not able to apply them.
Since everything else works, this is a MS Project bug reported by multiple users on various versions of Windows, including Vista and 7, so please provide a fix and not 'not a know bug' lie. All the premium support will say, is to format the hard drive, unless
they have a patch or a registry edit solution. If the latter is true, since the issue exists for multiple years, it should have been already been provided to users.
Also, I am not running a SQL server, or any server, this is an installation on a local machine.

  • "There was not enough memory" error message when saving DNG and Jpeg

PC/Windows XP Pro. Pentium 4/2Gb RAM.
I am constantly getting memory errors when trying to save batches of images from ACR4 either as Jpegs or DNGs.
A couple of images in to the batch a small window appears with a list of the files and next to each of them is the line: "There was not enough memory."
These are 220Mb TIFF files that are processed in Hasselblad's Flexcolor on the same computer. I can process an entire folder full (sometimes 50 images) without a hitch in Flexcolor, but Bridge/ACR4 and CS3 can't handle any reasonable number of images.
Could it be something in my settings? For the record, they are:
In Bridge, under Edit/Preferences/Camera RAW preferences, Camera Raw Cache is set to 10Gb. Jpeg and Tiff handling boxes are both ticked.
Under Edit/Preferences/Cache, Cache Size slider is slightly over half way to the right.
In addition, I have CS3 pointed to a formatted 500GB scratch disk all to itself.
And CS3's RAM is set to 80%.
Finally, this computer is used for nothing else except image editing.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    D.

    Thomas,
    Thanks for the reply.
If you mean by "Public Beta", did I download the 10.4Mb plug-in (as per John Cornicello's link above) and install it at Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats in place of the old plug-in, then yes.
I always run ACR4 via Bridge, never via CS3. CS3 always comes after conversion in my workflow. Also, I like to give Bridge/ACR a free run of available resources. Nothing else is ever open when I'm running them.
In CS3 under Edit/Preferences/File Handling, under Image Previews I selected 'Never Save'. Not sure if this affects ACR though.
Also, as per the suggestion in the article referred to in my last post, I removed the tilde ~ to activate the Bigger Tiles plug-in. CS3's memory % is now set @ 90%.
The only thing I haven't done is to activate the Microsoft 3Gb switch. I can't find instructions that are clear enough. Also, it may be that it makes no difference when running Vista 64bit, as I am.
For what it's worth, with these fine tunings, CS3 now executes the Retouch Artist's Speedtest in 20 seconds, a shade faster than before. This is extremely fast, so my setup should not be the problem here. I hope! ;-)
Finally, is there any point in trying LR? Or is its file saving/cache setup the same as ACR's?
Thanks for taking an interest in my case. I'm very happy to be a guinea pig since I will constantly have to process large numbers of files and I'd like to overcome this problem
    Many thanks.
    D.
