Archive + Cleanup question

I am looking for a methodolgy or application to help me clean out my iPhoto pictures. I understand that I can burn albums to CD/DVD (archiving) then I can delete those albums. That does not, however, delete the actual pictures from the library. I am hoping to find a way to burn my albums, then remove those pictures from the library. My library is very large and sifting through the library for a small subset of pictures seems daunting at best.
Thanks in Advance!

How do you delete the pics?
Do you drag them to the Trash in your Dock, them
empty it?
or
Drag them to the iPhoto trash, then empty it?
Regards
TD
Okay,
I deleted photos from the iPhoto Library today like I normally do. I highlight a photo and use delete key. It then goes to the iPhoto trash. I then emptied the iPhoto trash and wouldn't you know it the photos are gone from iPhoto and my hard drive too.
So how do I have all of these old photos in my Pictures folder that I deleted as above? How could my photos be in the Pictures folder but not in iPhoto trash or an iPhoto library.
I guess what I'm upset about is the fact that there are a couple of thousand photos in the Pictures folder that i thought were gone. So I'm using more drive space than I thought too, right?

  • I won't mark my archived, unanswered questions as 'answered'

The 'My Questions' link brings up a list of questions I've posted, with the as-yet unanswered ones at the top of the list, begging to be marked as answered. But they can beg all they want, because they weren't answered and that's that.

That's entirely your call. Just curious ... why were
you thinking that you were required to mark
    them as answered?
I wasn't. I was, however, noticing that every time I post a request for help with a problem yet receive no responses that solve the problem, the list of unresolved questions on my My Questions page grows by one, and, further, I was thinking that, since those questions eventually become archived and it's therefore impossible for anyone to answer them if they haven't already, it behooves Apple Discussions to allow the option of marking an archived question as 'Never Answered', or otherwise remove such old, unanswerable posts from the most prominent position on the My Questions page, where the administrators seem to have positioned them so as to encourage me to flag them as answered.

  • Preinstall cleanup question

Version 2.18. We are runing the Do Setup step on "9.1-Apply patch 7303029". The text in the Wizard for this step states:
"Before applying 7303029, if you have applied any other patch previously in preinstall mode and do not intend to merge it with 12.1.1 upgrade driver u6678700.drv, clean-up the directory $APPL_TOP/admin/$TWO_TASK/preinstall after taking the backup of current directory.".
"This step will download patch 7303029 and clean-up the preinstall directory so that only 7303029 remains. It will also verify that the u67780700.drv driver is in the correct location and ready to be merged."
In reviewing the ad34009s.sh script it shows that all of the code that moved any contents of the preinstall folder to a backup folder has been removed (17-DEC-2010) so the text of what the step is going to do may be misleading.
Question: We applied 15 financials patches in preinstall mode on step "Check for critical pre-upgrade patches for Financials" and all of these drivers are in our preinstall folder. Should we leave these in the preinstall folder or not? Thanks!

Yes - I had development remove the cleanup so that it would not delete all the preinstalled financial patches - I will have the text fixed so that it is not misleading. Please leave all the preinstalled financial patches in the preinstall directory and they will all get merged into the new driver.
    Thanks

  • Archive/install questions

right now i am running mac os x leopard on my macbook pro. i upgraded from leopard, and have been having small difficulties such as the long blue screen the Admin account going to Standard, and a minor slowness in performance. rather than pitch patch up my system, i'd feel a lot better if i could just start with a fresh copy of leopard. so i want to reinstall leopard using the archive/install method. i have two questions about this method of installation.
    1) do i need an external hard drive for this method?
    2) what documents will be saved?-what will happen to my music in itunes and my pictures in iphoto(these two are the two most important things to me!)
    thanks for any help.

    1. No
    2. All of them.

I tried the upgrade with the install disc first. The install program wasn't able to recognize the MacBook hard drive. No go. Then I tried archive and install and the install program froze while transferring settings and graphic files (iPhoto and iTunes). Because I had to quit the install program due to its freezing, my disc was no longer recognizable as bootable. So i had to start in target mode, connect to my iMac, and do a clean install. Shall we say, "Pain in the ***?"
Now I'm having quirky problems like finding that during a restart command, the application do NOT quit unless I manually make the command. And there are some wi-fi stations that are NOT recognized unless I restart the laptop. And finally, there are some other Finder problems, like trying to open a folder within a window sometimes causes the window to scroll to the top of the file/folder list, which means that I lose, temporary, the sight of the folder that I'm trying to open. Weird **** like that.
Spaces is kind of weird, too. If I'm using Spaces and trying to toggle between two applications, like drag and drop, I'm finding it difficult to follow the switching windows in the course of the operation.
Maybe this means that 10.5.1 is the real OS, and the one I have on my machine is the beta. When Apple announced that they were delaying the final development of Leopard because they were concentrating on the iPhone, they weren't kidding. While Leopard has a great face and is polished in many areas, it's unrefined in others. I would have been wise to wait.

  • Exchange 2007 Archiving Licensing Question

    Simple question (I hope)
What type of CALS do I need for Archiving in Exchange 2007 (Hosted on an SBS Server).
Also, does the version of outlook matter for the archiving?
This topic first appeared in the Spiceworks Community

    Agree with Cara on this and the transaction logs can be fairly hefty in size when migrating a bunch of data.  One other option would be to;
    1. do a backup of the associated stores/database right before migration.
    2. then run on circular logging for those all databases within a storage group which will keep the logs in check
    3. upon completion turn circular logging OFF, do a full backup and proceed along your way.
There is however some risk with using circular logging and you should read the articles below
    http://exchangeserverpro.com/ems-enabledisable-exchange-server-2007-circular-logging/

    http://blogs.technet.com/b/scottschnoll/archive/2011/06/27/circular-logging-and-mailbox-database-copies.aspx
Of course you could also keep things as they are and then monitor disk space and log volume during migration and as things rise Execute a Full backup to clear/truncate the logs.  Technically its safer to do this then turn on circular logging but its
allot more resource intensive all the way around.   Another option would be to schedule several full backups during the migration process, i.e. every NN hours etc and then the backups will happen automatically and all should be well as long as the
backups complete before the disk runs out of space from log file generation

  • Dataguard physical standby archive log question

    Hi all,
I will try to keep this simple..
I have a 4 node RAC primary shipping logs to a 2 node physical standby.
On the primary when I run 'alter system archive log current' on an instance I only see 1 log being applied on the standby, that is by querying v$archived_log.
If I run the following on the standby:
    select thread#,sequence#,substr(name,43,70)"NAME",registrar,applied,status,first_time from v$archived_log where first_time
    in
    (select max(first_time) from v$archived_log group by thread#)
    order by thread#
    I get:
    THREAD# SEQUENCE# NAME REGISTR APPLIED S FIRST_TIME
    1 602 thread_1_seq_602.2603.721918617 RFS YES A 17-jun-2010 12:56:58

    4 319 thread_4_seq_319.2606.721918625 RFS NO A 17-jun-2010 12:57:00
Why do we only see the max(sequence#) having been applied and not all of them?
This is the same no matter how many times I archive the current log files on any of the instances on the primary and also the standby does not have any gaps.
    Hope this is clear..
    any ideas?

  • Data Warehouse Archive logging questions

    Hi all,
I'd like some opinions/advice on archive logging and OWB 10.2 with a 10.2 database.
Do you use archive logging on your non-production OWB instances? I have a development system that only has "on demand" backups done and the archive logs fill frequently. In this scenario, should I disable archive logging? I realize that this limits my recovery options to cold backups but on a development environment, this seems sufficient for me. Would I be messing up any OWB features by turning off archive logging?
For production instances, how large do you make your archive log (as a percentage of your total DW size perhaps)?
How do you manage them? With Flash recovery areas? Manually? RMAN or other tools?
    Thanks in Advance,
    Mike

Usualy, I don't set any DW tables to log. Since it's a data warehouse, I believe it's better to make cold backups. In some cases, ETL Mappings may work like backup procedures themselves.
In OWB, select the object you need (table or index) to create. Right-click it, select Configuration -> Performance Parameters -> Logging Mode -> NOLOGGING
Flash RecoveryDon't think it's going to help you, since most of your data manipulation is based on batch jobs.
RMANIf you want to make hot backups, this is something that can really help you manage backup procedures.
    ManuallyMaybe... Why not?
I don't take hot backups from DW databases. I prefer to take cold backups. In a recovery scenario, you restore the cold backup and if it's 3 days late, I execute the ETL mappings for the last 3 days.

  • RAC online and archive logs question

    Hello All,
I setup a RAC database instances prod1 and prod2 (10.2.0.4). Datafiles and onlinelogs are on ASM.
Does these results look good queried from two instances. I am kind of concerned about the Group3 that has the same name for both the members.
Also archived logs are going to the ASM, is this a good practice. I was reading Oracle RMAN book and it mentioned archived logs go to local disk.
Is it possible to archive to local disk for online that are on ASM? Please advice. Early reply appreciated.. Thanks San~

It is recommend to store archived log files on ASM and on Shared disk, check your archive log format which suppose to represent uniqueness across all instances.
Yes, technically it is possible to archive to local disk, but not recommended as if you loose local disk there will be gaps in the archived log files and also it increases the administration.

Recently I flashed a box to create a flash archive. That archive was served out via NFS and "seen" by the client server I built. Used image to sucessfully build the client server, but the disk is not sliced up like my source box. Is there something I missed in doing this? Any info on this will be greatly appreciated.

  • Archive log question

i have a db in archive log mode
i found harddisk always full with archive log
and db can not work then
so i decide to comment this 3 parameter
    # log_archive_start = true
    #log_archive_dest_1= "location=/u01/app/oracle/admin/dbname/arch"
    # log_archive_format = arch_%t_%s.arc
    in init.ora
    then i enter into svrmgrl
    shutdown abort
    startup
db open and i found db continued to archive redolog
    when redolog are full
db stop work and alertlog report all redolog need archive
    why ?

A better solution would be to create a job at the OS level that
would run automatically at set times to backup the archive logs
to another location, then remove the backed up logs from your
drive. Depending on the available space, and the amount of log
that your database creates, you can set the timing of this job
to keep some space free all the time. On most of our servers,
the timing ranges from every 2 hours to once a week.
When you stop archiving, you can only recover the database to
the time of your last backup. Also, the backup needs to be
    done "cold", that is, with the database shutdown. Worst case;
You backup tonight, work all day tomorrow and seconds before the
backup finishes, your disk explodes. Can you afford to lose 24
    hours work?

  • Archiving Objects Question

    Hello,
my task is to implement a program which analysis the data amount which is freed by an archiving object if it would be archived by the admin. The information I've gathered so far is the following:
    1) With the transaction db15 I am able to take a look into the archiving objects and how they are linked with the tables in the database.
    2) I know that every archiving object has to do 4 steps while it is processed: read-write-delete-back loading
The problem is I don't know how many data rows are archived by an archiving object nor which data they hold. Is there a table which holds this information?
    Best Regards,
    Ralph

    Hi Ralph,
To analyse how many data rows are archived by an archiving object you'll have to query the relevant tables for the archiving object and then check if the objects are business complete and the residence period is met. This can be quite complex, a fast alternative is to run the archiving jobs in test mode and they will display the total number of objects that would be archived.
When you say "nor which data they hold", I understand that you mean to see which data has already been archived by the different archiving objects. For this you'll have to use the AIS (Archive Information System), but basically, for each archiving object, SAP has "link tables" that contain information about the objects that have been archived.
More information about AIS on the following link:

  • IBook G4 slowing down -- Archive & Install question

    Hello,
I have an iBook G4, that I bought I believe back in late 2004. It's been slowing down quite a bit and I'm thinking about performing an Archive & Install, which a guy at the Genius Bar recommended would make my performance much quicker and less spinning beachballs.
I have an Airport, through which I access my internet wirelessly, and printer wirelessly. After performing an Archive & Install, will I need to re-setup my wireless internet and ability to print wirelessly? It's been a long time since I set these up the first time, and kind of dread relearning the process.
    Thanks,
    Ben

You could try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
You will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
See if a little hard drive maintenance helps things out.
(In the future, you may want to post in the iBook G4 Forum. You have posted in the iBook G3 (Dual USB) Forum.)

  • AVCHD archive importing questions

Hello. I have a Canon HF10. I am new to video editing and am just now digging in to learn iMovie, so up until tonight, I've been recording on the camera, and when I need space on the camera, simply moving the entire folder structure on the camera's internal hard drive to a firewire external drive. Now I have iMovie 09 and I'm ready to start using that footage.
My understanding is at this point I would need to use the "import camera" archive feature. When I do that it asks me to find the archive, so I go to the original folder structure on my external drive and try to select the folder with all the footage (I'm actually unclear which folder this would be as I see AVCHDTN folder, BDMV folder, CANON folder, and there are files and/or folders inside of each of these), but each folder has all its items greyed out and when I try to select any of them iMovie returns the following error:
Folder is Not a Camera Archive
Please select a folder that is a camera archive, then click Import.
    What am I doing wrong?

I ran into this myself. I had to quit and re-launch iMovie to get it to import my archive. You might want to reboot your computer as well.
When you re-launch iMovie got to the root level of the archive which should be the name of your camera. You might have to re-launch a few times to get it to work.
