Archive Compression

Hi,
Database version: 11.2.0.3(Exadata)
We want to use archive compression for our standby(standalone non-exadata). We don't have license for Advanced Compression. Is the archive compression possible without Advanced Compression?

DVD Archive = COMPRESSED FILES

To be certain, I follwed the explicit iTunes 6, multi-page procedure to find that I CANNOT archive the material I purchased from Itunes "Music Store" on a DVD.
What one gets is a compressed m4p file and NOT an AIFF file, thus the archive isn't a valid, full file of the purchased material. It is a compressed facimile.
This is the result of three DAYS of effort, first using logic, then the menu instructions and gfinally a search that led here.
ITunes was supposred to be fun. It is anything but that.
A CD can be obtained in AIFF format for auto playing but not a DVD.

You do realise iTunes Music Store only sells compressed music, right? It was only an M4P file that you bought in the first place.

Problems Archiving & Compressing

Hello,
I'm trying to empty out my hard drive to free up some space for more video. I am archiving to disk some old imovie files. I have successfully done this with about half of the files, but now I am getting error messages and I'm not sure how to solve the problem.
When I attempt to "burn project to disk" the process starts as normal, but once I hit the "burn" command, it immediately kicks out the dvd and says "burn failed with an error". It appears there may be some text that flashed before that error, but it goes so quickly I can't see it (is there a log I can reference?).
I am using Sony DVD+R disks and since I have already burned around 10 or so using the same steps I don't think the disk is the problem.
The files I am archiving are only around 3GB and the movies themselves are from 5-10 minutes long.
Any ideas on how to solve this problem?
I don't know whether it is related, but around the same time, I was attempting to prepare a file for upload on Youtube using the Quicktime Expert settings (again, after having done it successfully several times using the same settings), and imovie repeatedly shut done. This particular file was around 9 minutes in length so it was not especially large. I was not at the computer at the time (it has been taking, on average, a couple hours per video to compress), but the error that kept coming up was something like "imovie has unexpectantly shut down". I tried several times with the same outcome.

Try trashing the preference files first:
Quit iMovie.
Locate a file named com.apple.iMovie.plist and get rid of it. iMovie will create a new one the next time it runs. Empty the trash and run a permissions repair from the Disk Utility folder.
The files are located here:
-->/Users/YourName**/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iMovie.plist
I see where you said that the DVD+R were working but now are not. I think I would try using a good quality DVD-R and attempt the burn again.

I am on 11.1.0.7, and want to know if I can compress the archives which we store locally.
ie., for Log_archive_dest_1
We have Log_archive_dest_2(for standby) for which we have already specified Compression=Enable

The only information I can find on this is :
Bug 3464260: ALTER DATABASE ARCHIVELOG COMPRESS ENABLE/DISABLE IS MISSING IN 10G DOCS
I can't find any official reference to the syntax in 11g. I would say don't use it.
Syntax I'm referring to :
ALTER DATABASE ARCHIVELOG COMPRESS ENABLE/DISABLEAlso I would not compress an an archive since if you need it for recovery, you have to decompress.
Please consider closing some of your old questions.

Emagic's "ZAP" program - archived compressed audio files unable to open.

I have a number of audio files that were compressed/packed using emagic's ZAP program that I was interested in revisiting but it seems my copy of "ZAP' has run out of authorisations over the years through computer meltdowns. Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

Yeah, I think I have a copy on my PC, or if not, I could probably dig it out.
There was a free unpack-only version of Zap that should enable you to get at your files - though where you could locate a copy I don't know. It might have been included on Logic master disks around V4.x.... It would probably be OS9 only I guess, for the Mac version.

Files don't actually Compress but look like Archive.zip

New issue: I never had trouble archiving/compressing files before.
I choose the files to compress, it goes through the motions, even gives me an Archive.zip file, but that file stays the same size as the combined files. Doesn't actually compress anything.
Can't find this issue answered elsewhere!

What kind of files are you attempting to zip?
Some files, such as photos, music and video are actually compressed already. In fact something if you attempt to compress the files again. they actually get larger.

There is a feature that allows us to compress archive logs. This is set using "ALTER DATABASE ARCHIVELOG COMPRESS enable;"
What I need to know is
1) Which versions of oracle supports this.
2) Has anyone experienced any drawbacks using this.

Maintain Quick link b/w received & sent mail intact on archive & re-import

Is there a way to archive a mail account (Inbox and Sent) and re-import the folders inbox and sent mail in a way that the quicklink between mail received and mail sent/forward remain intact?
Because simply moving the inbox box and sent box to folders on OnMyMac results in the loss of this quicklink. That is I can see the Reversed arrow - but it says the sent message has been moved and not traceable.

Well, if it is possible, here's how...
First Quit Mail, then I'd backup these two Mail folders, by right clicking on them in the Finder, then choose Archive/Compress.
Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail
Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail Downloads
(Could be a different folder here if you chose such in Mail Prefs)
Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place, same for the Mail Downloads folder... only the plist is separate.
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
With those files moved to a safe place, unzip them with a double click.
Then open Mil and use the Import function.

Seeburger message tracking archiving / deleting question

We are using Seeburger 1.7 with XI 7.0 for our EDI translations..We store information in Seeburger Message Tracking for our business requirements.I would like to know how these entries could be archived(Compressed) and stored or deleted after certain days so that we wont max up our storage..?

Thanks for your response.Yes,I could find the "Archive Configuration" option..when I click that it shows me a screen saying show master data with two items with check boxes (Document Types & Archiving Systems)..On clicking the details of them I see set of parameters which shows the profile and the document type..not sure how to proceed from here to set up any archiving / deletion..any help is appreciated..

Create archive of

I upgraded to Leopard, but saw this "Create archive of" option in a "Quick Tip of the Week" video. A friend of mine that still has Tiger said that she still has this option on her OS version.

As you can see, the file size is reduced dramatically. Did they get rid of this option in Leopard? The "Compress" option is not the same. Yes, the file zips but zips as the same size, unlike the "Create archive of" option within Tiger. Any help would be appreciated.

Now that I found that answer, I'm going to answer my own question for others that have the same question. Leopard does have the "Create archive of" option and it is the same as the "Compress" option. The reason why I was questioning the two being different was because I saw in the "Quick Tip of the Week" video that when you used this Archive option within Tiger, it dramatically reduced the size of the file, yet it did not reduce the file size with Leopards "Compress" option. Well, the reason why it did not reduce the file size was because I was Archiving/Compressing a folder full of music MP3's. MP3's are files that are already compressed, which is why Archiving/Compressing them did not show a drop in file size. Other files such as pictures and regular text documentation will show a drop in file size when you Archive/Compress them. Apple decided to change the name from "Create archive of" to "Compress". I hope this clears up any confusion that anyone else might have in the future.

Trying to compress Mail folder size

I like to archive all my emails, but I noticed that the folder for Mail was getting rather large (4GB). I thought if I manually removed all the various attachments, it would make the folder size a little more manageable. But after trying with a few of the archive mailboxes (even though the attachments have successfully been removed), it seems the size of the folders are still the same. Does Mail still save the attachments despite not having them attached to messages? Am I going about this the wrong way? I don't want to lose the actual correspondences but most of the attachments are unnecessary. Please help. Thanks.

As per your query you can provide the user lifetime publishing but you can not Zip the file as per our two friends said and this will happen in KM and you are also aware of KM functionality.
So document should be kept in your directory but it will not visible to enduser (those are having a read access) section.
So Go to folder (Life time enable on folder level) ---> Details ---> Click on Lifetime --> Enable it
Afterthat you can select the appropriate file and assign the life time .Here is the process....
A(file name)-> Details-> Properties ---> lifetime.
This will helpful to you.

IMAP Mail & Archiving

What is the best way to archive older male using Apple mail v2.13?
Aside from the ideas below - if anyone has a better way to archive their mail - please let me know...
- the basic idea is:
1 - get older mail of the IMAP server - which is getting very full
2 - Create some local folders and "move ?" IMAP mail to Local Folders - basically I'm curious about the best way to do this - if I simply drag from an IMAP folder to local one - will that in effect just "COPY to local" or "copy to local and delete from imap" ....?
3 - eventually i can even archive the archive folders - ( if I quit mail app - then move the archive folders out of the master mail directory - then they will not show up in Apple mail - and I can just back them up to CD or what ever...) right?

But, I am curious: what actually happened to the IMAP version of the piece of mail?
Yes, what ever the IMAP folder shows will be immediately reflected on the Server, any file outside the IMAP folder will be invisible to the IMAP Server.
Couple of suggestions...
Do not move a whole IMAP Folder, that removes it from the Server too, the way is to Select All within & move the files to another Folder.
For safety & a backup, First Quit Mail, then I'd backup these two Mail folders, by right clicking on them in the Finder, then choose Archive/Compress.

If that isn't possible then I think this is the same for 10.3 as 10.4 & up...

As an aside, what is best way to delete all private data a Mac Cube G4 in order to sell it.
Best is to erase the whole disk with zero one pass then reinstall.

Email in Mail Disappeared but Still in Library Mail

Hey, my email messages in Mail are gone... or that is when opening Mail it acts as if it were the first time I started it only giving me the option to add an account or close Mail. But hopefully good news... all of my different mailboxes are in the Library>Mail folder.
I think this is due to me leaving the MacBook on and the battery dying (battery totally lost it's stamina and can't stay on for long).
I am using an IMAP Gmail account so not a dire situation but is there an nice an easy way to just maybe point Mail or restore these folders that have all my messages and settings within them?

Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place... only the plist is separate.
Try dragging this file to the desktop in case we need to put it back later, then logout/in...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
(May or may not require you to setup your account(s) again.)
Quit Mail, then In your home folder, try moving this +folder & file+ to the Desktop then reboot...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail
Move to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
You can always move them back if it doesn't help.
