Archive creates empty MAC OSX folders and second folder with documents...

I have been sending .zip documents to customers for some time. I archive using the ctrl + click method (choosing CREATE ARCHIVE...)
Customers have been saying that they can't find the files, that the folders are empty. I didn't know what they were talking about...until I archived a folder, transfered it to a LACIE external hard drive on the Ethernet network, decompressed it and saw what they were talking about! What is that MAC OSX folder? Why does CREATE ARCHIVE create 2 folders with the document in one of them? I frankly don't get it. The external drive we have is a LaCie Mini 250 MB formatted in ext 3 (Linux?) before it was formatted HFS+ but it created problems and the LaCie technicians suggested that we format the disk in Ext 3 (Ext 3, 13 35, I don't quite remember). The disk was originally formatted in Fat32 (Windows) which didn't work (filenames, unable to copy or delete, etc).
Is CREATE ARCHIVE the problem? or is it network disks which are PC disks or PC-originally-intended disks?

Hi, Louis. Welcome to the Discussions.
See my post here and the related comments concerning Create Archive in that topic. I believe that will help you understand what's happening.
Good luck!

I just upgraded to Mac OSX Lion and can't attach documents to my hotmail.  Can anyone help?

    Hi there,
Over the last few days, this issue has been driving me up the wall too!
I downloaded Lion OS a few months ago, but it was only until a few days ago did i attempt to logon to Hotmail to check my account & send an email with an attachment.
Normally i use the MAC Mail app, which is synchronised to my hotmail account.
Anyway, I'm not sure whether the Lion OS is the root cause of the issue, however after much digging around on various forums - the issue for me was resolved by downloading the latest version of Microsoft Silverlight 5 (www.microsoft.com/silverlight). Its a free download....

  • Mac OSX 10.4.5 folder with ? at startup

I no longer needed OS 9.2.2 and got rid of it from my machine, I had deleted all my OS 9 applications and files (that I was aware of. I had trouble deleting the 0S 9 system folder and used Mac Cocktail to delete it. Now when I restart my machine, I get the folder with the question mark on it.
What steps do I take to correct the problem? I have tried resetting the P-Ram among other things and have been able to backup my files using my powerbook and firewire connection, so I am not concerned about data loss.
    Do I re-install the OS?
    Than you in advance.

Try holding down the option key when starting up. You should get a window showing all your available startup disks. If you have a bootable OS on your machine it should show up. Just click on it then click the arrow on the right.
If nothing is available I don't know what will happen. But if nothing comes up for booting then you have no system and will have to reinstall from your install disk. Do an Archive and Install.

  • [SOLVED] Wanted: extract pdf annotations created in Mac OSX preview

I just had a collegue return a pdf marked up with "annotations".
I first struggled with finding a viewer that views the annotations, and those that could (evince, okular) all have more dependencies that I'd want/need.
I decided there must be an lighter weight way to extract the text of annotations from pdfs.  I searched, read, and learned about pdf annotation formats and I figured out how to extract adobe annotations from a pdf.  Only then did I realize that my collegue didn't use adobe.  The annotations were created in Mac OSX's preview.  Preview, it would seem, does not use the adobe xfpdf format for annotations, it uses some other means to embed the annotations.
I searched the pdf file in text and hex editors, but I couldn't find anything resembling what I knew to be in some of the annotations.  However Preview does it, the text must be encoded and unreadable in the "raw" file.  This is in contrast, it would seem, with adobe's annotations.
My question, then, is two-fold.  First, are there any text-annotation extractor tools that can get notes created in OSX's preview?  If not, does anyone know of any documentation outlining how Preview embeds this information?  I've been googling the latter question, but I'll I'm getting is "where-to-click" level tutorials on how to DO annotations in Preview.  I can't find any documentation of how that information is embeded into the file.
Note: evince does get the text of the annotations, but I'd prefer not to keep that installed.  Evince-gtk is only every so slightly lighter on dependencies.  Also, in evince I get flooded with "sticky notes" with all the annotation text.  It would take a while to move those around and close them one at a time to be able to actually read them.  I'm hoping to be able to extract all annotation text and dump it into a text file.

Holy crap, it works.  A couple hours of reading ugly docs and 32 lines of code later, I have exactly what I was looking for.
I'd love it if some volunteers would try this out, beat it up, and see what breaks first so I can improve it.  After a little polishing I might put it up in the AUR.
Get the code from my dropbox here
The Ugly Patchwork Makefile and a very brief TODO list are also posted.
I'll put together a PKGBUILD once this is in better order for distribution and installation.  I just got the darn thing to work, it's time to celebrate, not code more.
Note to Mods: as in my "report", please move this thread to Community Contributions.

  • Where can I get current info on SysAdmin Certification(s) for Mac OSX SL and Lion?

Where can I get current info on SysAdmin Certification(s) for Mac OSX SL and Lion? The Apple website for this is "under construction" for weeks now...
    Thanks,
    [email protected]

Certification test for OS X 10.7 Lion are not available yet. I assume they will be nearly identical to the test of 10.5 and 10.6. Hopefully, the reason the certification website has been down for a while is that they are updating it with the new information. Though I really wouldn't expect any 10.7 certification test to be available for 2-4 months. Peachpit Press didn't publish their training material for 10.6 until October even though 10.6 was released in August.
As far as the 10.6 Certifications:
Certified Support Professional, 10.6 requires the 9L0-403 exam.
Certified Technical Coordinator, 10.6 requires the 9L0-403 as well as the 9L0-510 (Server Essentials) exams.
The information for the Certified System Administrator, 10.6 is "hidden" on the integral7 website but according to this Wikipedia entry, you need to pass the 9L0-510 Server Essentials exam as well as these three:
    Directory Services
    Deployment
    Security and Mobility

Lion 10.7.2 On both mac book pro and iMac, both with Lion 10.7.2, obtain repeated iCal event notifications from calendar or address book.  Cannot turn these off.  They repeat several times per session and every time computer is used.  How to diagnose this?

First, uninstall "SuperTV" (whatever that is) according to the developer's instructions. It isn't working and it's filling the log with noise.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
    Launch the Console application.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
PLEASE DO NOT INDISCRIMINATELY DUMP THOUSANDS OF LINES FROM THE LOG INTO A MESSAGE. If you do that, I will not respond.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

Here is an article that describes what it is supposed to do:
Startup Manager: How to select a startup volume
If no Volumes are shown, it is telling you there are no potentailly bootable Volumes attached. That means your boot drive has died or the bootable image on it is unrecognizable.

Click here and follow the instructions. If the computer originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, when you reach step 5, insert its original disk, restart with the C key held down, use the Disk Utility to erase the internal drive, and install a fresh OS.

You are using Snow Leopard so you have no OPTION+R shortcut. You need to boot the computer from your Snow Leopard DVD or USB flash drive.
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
